32 STYLE | fashion DEFINITION: A collaboration is when one brand will team up with another to create a range of products. Over the last few years, fashion collaborations have become a common strategy amongst our favourite brands. You’ll certainly be familiar with images of diehard fashion fans camping outside their favourite stores, just to get their mitts on a limitededition, collaborative item. And trust us, we’re wondering how some of these collaborations come to be just as much as you are… THE WEIRD AND THE WONDERFUL BALMAIN X BEYONCÉ This recent partnership is based on Beyoncé’s iconic outfits from her 2018 Coachella performance, designed by Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing. The two cultural powerhouses decided to make the outfits, in particular the graphic hoodies, available to their doting followers. The hoodies reference signature varsity styles from more than 100 American colleges, which seems fitting as the proceeds from the collection are used to fund the United Negro College Fund (UNCF); the charity that enables thousands of young people to attend college. Prices range from $435 to $1320. DOLCE & GABBANA X SMEG Dolce & Gabbana has now teamed up with kitchenware giant Smeg on three separate occasions; each time producing wonderful ranges of high-end kitchen appliances including fridges, cookers, kettles, coffee machines, juicers and mixers. The fashion brand called upon Smeg to create a range that pays homage to Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s Sicilian heritage. Both parties used social media to tease the release. I mean, why would you chill your beer and hummus in anything else? Balmain x Beyoncé

We’re not exactly sure why fashion designer Anya Hindmarch decided to team up with British cereal brand Kellogg’s, neither are we sure you could call the result a roaring success. The limited-edition ‘Fashion Flakes’ were available at selected stores around London, including Harrods, as well as being placed in hotel rooms for fashion editors who were visiting the city for fashion week. Boxes of the cereal were more than double the price of original Kellogg’s, so we think we’ll just stick to toast. TOMMY HILFIGER X GIGI HADID Since 2016, Tommy Hilfiger and supermodel Gigi Hadid have wowed the fashion industry with their creative collaborations. This particular pairing was not just about producing an exclusive range of clothing, but was largely focused on creating an experience. Our favourite of the four seasons that the duo have produced came in the form of ‘Tommy Pier’, a larger-than-life fashion festival in Manhattan’s harbour district that emulated a fun fair with an abundance of authentic attractions including hot dog stands and cotton candy stalls. Certainly a fashion show with a difference.
