18 Tuesday September 11 2018 Latest Christchurch news at NOR’WEST NEWS Heaps to learn in France CANTERBURY’S No 2 ranked tennis player Dylan Heap has returned from France where he polished his ground strokes with former world No 10 and French Davis Cup captain Arnaud Clement. The seven-week trip also gave the 18-year-old Waimairi player’s valuable match experience, playing in many prestigious open tournaments during the northern hemisphere summer. In all, he played 25 matches, winning 19, and winning three tournaments in the process - the Rogne, Auriol and Ventabren opens. Heap said his time with Clement was invaluable. “It was such a step-up on hitting balls in Christchurch and he was so humble,” he said. “He told me to make sure I keep my passion for the sport as I progress, even during the tough time.” Based in Aix-en-Provence and playing at the Country Club Aixois, he enjoyed the challenge of practising with Clement and playing many friendly matches with a multitude of strong up-and-coming French tennis players aged between 16 and 25-years-old. Heap, a year 13 student at Christ’s College, loved the chance to play some great tennis and to beat many players EXPERIENCE: Dylan Heap (right) with Arnaud Clement, former world number 10, after a practice session in Aix-en-Provence. above his level. “I definitely benefited from the experience, which was awesome, and can’t wait to do it all again next July,” he said. Heap spent the first three weeks in France in the company of his parents, and the last three with his Waimairi club coach and fellow member of the premier team, Remi Feneon. Dylan was NZ national under-16 singles and doubles champion for the last two seasons. He will play premier grade for Waimairi again this summer. Before the New Zealand season gets underway, Heap will visit the United States to look at universities offering sports scholarships. He hopes that next year will see him studying and playing tennis there. SPORTS City hosts cricket nationals CHRISTCHURCH will play host to the indoor cricket club nationals on Thursday. It is the first time Christchurch has held the tournament since 2008 and a record 40 teams have entered across the grades. The open men’s and under-21 boy’s grades will be played at the refurbished Howzat Riccarton site, while the premier men’s and over-40 men’s will be played at Action Indoor Sports Hornby. Indoor Cricket New Zealand chief executive Mark Cini said it was a thrill for Christchurch to host the tournament again. He said the February 22, 2011, earthquake had made hosting events challenging and he saw it as a positive step. There will also be a Gold Coast team in the over-40 competition for a bit of a trans-Tasman flavour. There are Christchurch teams throughout all the grades. Games start on Thursday morning and run late into the night with finals days on Saturday.
