AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
MISSION AND SERVICES
The American Heart Association is a relentless
force for a world of longer, healthier lives.
By 2020, the Association aims to improve
the cardiovascular health of all Americans
by 20 percent — and to reduce deaths from
cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent.
Our size and scope let us have real impact in Iowa
and around the world. We have invested more
than $4.1 billion in research since our inception,
more than any U.S. nonprofit organization.
The American Heart Association invests the
money raised locally through our Go Red For
Women, Heart Ball, Heart Walk and other events,
back into Iowa communities, providing lifesaving
awareness, education, training and more. We are
currently investing almost $9.6 million in research
projects done at Iowa institutions.
Whether you or someone you know has been
impacted by heart disease or stroke, you have
felt the effect of our work in your life. Our
accomplishments in Iowa include mandatory CPR
training for high school students and smoke-free air.
about the risks or wearing red on National Wear Red Day (Feb.
1, 2019) or attending an upcoming event in the corridor.
The American Heart Association is an easy organization to
support, accepting both donations of money and time. To get
THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INTERVENTION PROGRAM
KEY SERVICES
Our main goal is to be a positive and healing resource for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, stalking
and human trafficking (broadly referred to as intimate partner violence) . By providing non-judgmental crisis services
to victim/survivors we are able to ensure that all clients are treated with dignity and respect as they find their way
to safety. Ultimately, though, our goal is to end intimate partner violence and violence against women. While this is
lofty, there is no question it can be accomplished through the education and engagement of our communities and
zero tolerance for battering in an intimate relationship.
HOW TO HELP
Volunteering Opportunities: We have the Greatest Volunteers!!! DVIP could not do what we do without our
committed volunteers and we have many opportunities to join our already incredible team. Direct Service volunteers
go through 20 hours of training to assist with our 24-hour emergency crisis line, as well as any direct client needs.
We also look for volunteers to help support our youth department, community outreach and, of course people to
serve on our Board of Directors. Please see our website for more details on how you can help, dvipiowa.org.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
• Bring your business, nonprofit, church or club to
Prairiewoods for your next meeting. Our three meeting
spaces can accommodate up to 70 people. Our on-staff
chefs, easy access to nature, multiple break-out spaces
and flexible audio/video technology make Prairiewoods
the perfect destination for an out-of-the-box meeting at
nonprofit rates.
• Join us for a program or retreat focused on ecology,
spirituality or holistic health. Our offerings cover
everything from yoga to sustainable gardening, interfaith
dialogues to rock mandala painting. See our current
calendar and register online at www.Prairiewoods.org.
• Recharge your body, mind and spirit with a massage, time
in our Meditation Room, a fresh meal made mostly from
local ingredients or a serene walk on our outdoor labyrinth.
• Take an eco-tour to learn about ways we protect Earth
and all her creatures. See how 100 solar panels provide
about 45% of our electricity, straw bale walls model
recyclable housing options and a huge volunteer-run
garden provides about 1,500 pounds of produce for a
local food pantry each year.
• Give of your time when you join our roster of 150 active
volunteers. You can lend your hand in a variety of ways,
including serving on our board, staffing the office on
evenings and weekends, helping with housekeeping,
performing grounds maintenance and gardening.
• Make a financial contribution to ensure that Prairiewoods
can continue to be A Place of Peace and Transformation
that draws spiritual seekers and environmentalists from
around the country!
