NZ and international harpist to play a concert harp in an intimate setting at the Selwyn Gallery Selwyn residents have an exciting opportunity to see and hear Helen Webby, NZ and international harpist, now based in Christchurch, play a concert harp in an intimate setting at the Selwyn Gallery, Darfield on Sunday, 30 September, 4.00pm. A native of Whangarei, Helen began playing the harp at the age of twelve when her brother Kim built her a concert harp of NZ Red Beech. She earned a Bachelor of Music in Harp Performance from the University of Auckland in 1989, and completed a Master’s degree in Harp and Music Teaching from the Hochschule for Music in Hamburg in 1996. While based in Germany Helen led a busy career as a chamber and orchestral musician, and in 2000 returned to New Zealand as principal harp with the Christchurch Symphony. She has toured for Chamber Music NZ and Arts on Tour NZ, premiered NZ works at the 2006 American Harp Society convention, and performed with the New Zealand Symphony on tour in Vienna and Germany. Her CD, ‘Pluck’, is the first anthology of NZ harp music to be released. The production of ‘Pluck’ is the subject of the documentary film ‘Harps Make Fine Companions’, produced by Otago University. In 2010 Helen founded the Christchurch Harp Orchestra,a group of twenty harpists of all ages who spread the magic of the harp far and wide. Her website is www.harp.co.nz. The opening half of the concert will be performed on the concert harp, and the second half will feature a number of big and small harps. As part of the programme Helen will say a lot about the harps, and will invite questions at the conclusion when refreshments will also be served. There is limited seating for this concert at the Selwyn Gallery. Purchase tickets online at treasurer. email@example.com or come to 17 South Terrace, Darfield. Adults $25/students $15.
