SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday September 12 2018 7 News Medical centre stalwart retires •From page 1 In the 70s and 80s, when doctor delivered all babies, the doctor would suddenly leave and be away for anything from 10min to more than an hour. The same applied when a doctor went to an emergency. Sometimes they were gone for hours, especially when there was an accident beyond Porters Pass. Mrs Dimmock recalls handwriting invoices for unpaid fees from family account cards which were filled in daily. The biggest change to the role came with the medical centre’s first purchase of a computer. It changed the whole concept of processing data and was a major learning curve for Mrs Dimmock. “When we got our first computer, I had never actually seen one, let alone turned one on,” she said. The first time a printer spat out a batch of accounts “in no time at all.” Mrs Dimmock said she was so excited she danced around the office “like a lunatic.” The arrival of Capitation funding in 2004 was another new concept to grasp. It meant developing a new way of accounting within the medical programme and a new fee structure. RETIRING: Nancy at her goodbye function on August 25. In more recent times there have been other challenges including building the new medical centre in 2013 which was a long process that affected all staff. “What should have been an exciting time turned into a nightmare which saw the team finally move in to the new building right on Christmas, eight months behind schedule.” Setting up the West Melton rooms in 2016 was another time-consuming project, but one which ran smoothly. Mrs Dimmock said there have been many unforgettable days in her role, like losing favourite patients and dealing with the shock following tragedies. But she said the reception team has been stable over the years. In the 50 years from 1964 to 2014 eight receptionists have been employed at Darfield, with only two leaving. Mrs Dimmock’s said her successor Pam Witteveen will be a real asset to the practice going forward. She said it makes her retirement easier knowing such a friendly and capable person will be warming her chair from now on. “It has been a privilege and a pleasure to have served the residents of the Malvern area over so many years and to have worked with so many wonderful people from all over the world,” Mrs Dimmock said. Along with plans to increase her fitness, Mrs Dimmock is going to spend her time socialising and holidaying. •Darfield Medical Centre extends its heart felt thanks to Mrs Dimmock for her service to the centre and community and congratulates her on her retirement. Local News Now Fire rages, homes at risk NZ Young Farmers’ first woman appointment • By Sally Rae LYNDA Coppersmith is dusting off her gumboots as she makes a return to the primary sector. Ms Coppersmith, 48, was recently appointed the first female chief executive at New Zealand Young Farmers. She will start work in the NZYF Prebbleton office on October 1, and acknowledged she had a lot to learn. She is presently a Christchurch-based senior account manager with accounting software company MYOB. Prior to that, she worked for DairyNZ, was a business development manager for LIC, and an area manager for Fonterra. NZYF has a network of almost 80 clubs, runs the FMG Young Farmer of the Year, and works in schools to get pupils excited about career opportunities in the primary industries. One of the reasons that she was drawn to the role was the ability to make a difference in the agricultural industry, which was her passion. 5 Warning Signs of Spinal Stress!
