During the regular season the Raiders defeated the Trevians for the first time in any sport and then in the semifinals of the state tournament, they did it again before losing the championship game to Lake Forest. Not surprisingly, both teams were flaunting undefeated records when they stepped onto the Skokie Playfields to renew their rivalry on Sept. 5. This time it was New Trier that was victorious, prevailing 4-1 in a game that was interrupted by a lightning and a rainstorm early in the second half. The star of this game was Kathryn McLaughlin, a junior who didn’t play in St. Louis because she was playing in an ice hockey tournament with the Chicago Young Americans, one of the premier teams in the Midwest. With 76 seconds elapsed in the second half, junior Eve Lake scored the Trevians’ third goal — shortly before the lightning that accompanied the rain temporarily halted play — and their last goal came from the stick of senior Faith Stineman with 97 seconds left in the game. Not only does North Shore Country Day have a small enrollment the school has three other fall sports — volleyball, tennis and cross-country — competing for the girls on campus. For freshmen and sophomores, that means the opportunity to get significant playing time on the field hockey team. “We have as many freshmen as seniors,” Doar said. “We have a lot of young players so getting them in games like this is great because they get experience and exposure.”

Tracy Allen/22nd Century Media In any sport, making adjustments from game to game is a vital aspect that can help determine future outcomes. How a team adjusts from seeing what worked and what can be worked on can be the difference between a win and a loss. Following its three-set loss to New Trier in the title game of the Summer’s End Tournament Sept. 1, Loyola (8-2) watched film from the match, worked on some things and came out on fire when it beat the Trevians four days later 25-11, 25-15 Sept. 5 in Wilmette. “Everyone was playing to their highest level, to levels we know they could play. It wasn’t just a couple players,” Loyola coach Mallory Thelander said. “Every single player was on the same page. Every player was competing at the level we know they can compete at. “We came out of that match Saturday wanting so much more, knowing how much more we could have done. We always put film up for the girls to watch themselves and we had a lot of unforced errors, which we can’t do. If we continually focus on our side, not their side and as long as we worry about we’re doing, we’re going to have success.” A Mary Kate Lopez kill that broke a two-all tie, started a 7-0 lead that gave the Ramblers a 9-2 lead, one the Trevians (7-1) wouldn’t be able to come back from. Outside hitter Lizzie Walker was at the service line for the entire run, one that saw the Trevians hit into three hitting errors and an unforced setting error. Coincidentally, Walker was at the service line with the Ramblers up 20-11, as they went on a run to win the set 25-11. “I was just staying focused and blocking out everything around me,” Walker said about her serving runs. “I just focus on getting the ball in the court and blocking everything else out. “Our confidence as a team helped us today. When everyone’s confident as a team, giving it our best and focusing on what we need to do, that’s what helps us play really well.” As dominating as the first set was, the second was even more so. The Ramblers ran out to leads of 12-1 and 15-3, before both teams started substituting and putting in some of their other players. Lopez had three kills in the 12-1 run start, while Julia Martinez added two of her own. “We were not passing well and that’s the name of the game,” New Trier coach Hannah Hsieh said. “We were anticipating it, they were going to serve us deep and we still didn’t even make that adjustment, even when we practiced that. We set high balls and they had a big block. They executed well.” Loyola got equal distribution from its seniors as Lopez led the team with eight kills, four blocks and six assists, Martinez added seven kills and two blocks, Elizabeth Ford six kills and Anne Martinson 16 assists. “The experience of having one more year over the juniors, especially at the varsity level, they know what it feels like and how to compete at this level,” the Loyola coach said. “They’re hungry, they want it.” Maddie McGregor led the Trevians with three kills. The Trevians know that matches like these are ones that can make them a better team, give them something to learn from as the season moves forward. “We simply said that that’s the best loss we have all season because that’s going to motivate us to make changes and continue on what we need to work on because this is not a team that has arrived,” the New Trier coach said. “This is a team that has things they can get better at and that’s something that hopefully can motivate them.” Boys golf Radler leads Loyola to Deerfield Invite title Gary Larsen Freelance Reporter Loyola Academy’s Peter Radler placed eighth as a junior at last year’s Class 3A state finals, but he knew coming into his senior year that the Ramblers would need more from him than just low scores this season. “We had a group of established leaders graduate so I knew this year it was going to be my turn,” Radler said. “I was ready for it. Golf is such an individual sport that a lot of leadership comes off the course. So that’s where I’ve tried to help.” Loyola coach Tim Kane is happy with what Radler is providing both on and off the course this year. “He’s a very consistent player, he’s level-headed, and he’s not a flashy player but he does a really nice job,” Kane said of Radler. Radler shot a 71 to lead the Ramblers to the team title of this year’s 12-team Deerfield Invite on Saturday, Sept. 8. The Ramblers edged second-place New Trier by a single team point, 298-299. Highland Park placed third with 304 points. In addition to Radler’s 71, the Ramblers got quality scores from Jack Crawshaw (74), Ryan Savarie (75), and Patrick Adler (78). Golfers had to contend with one of the first windy and cool days of the season at this year’s Deerfield Invite, playing at the Twin Orchard Country Club in poor connection? mediapodz.com Long Grove. “It’s a really tough course in windy conditions today, and the kids grinded out a really good score,” Kane said. “ New Trier placed second at a tournament for the second time in three days, having taken second behind team champion Lake Forest in a tournament at Buffalo Grove on Sept. 6. Saturday it was Loyola that nipped New Trier at the wire by a single point. “We’re doing a lot better than we did at the beginning of the season and I think we’ll only get better as the season goes on,” New Trier’s Charlie Creamean said. Creamean led the Trevians with a low round of 73.
