Trevians stay undefeated with win over NSCDS
Neil Milbert
Freelance Reporter
New Trier has just over
4,000 students and North
Shore Country Day has
225 but those numbers
proved to be irrelevant
when their field hockey
teams met last season.
During the regular season
the Raiders defeated
the Trevians for the first
time in any sport and then
in the semifinals of the
state tournament, they did
it again before losing the
championship game to
Lake Forest.
Not surprisingly, both
teams were flaunting undefeated
records when they
stepped onto the Skokie
Playfields to renew their
rivalry on Sept. 5.
This time it was New
Trier that was victorious,
prevailing 4-1 in a game
that was interrupted by a
lightning and a rainstorm
early in the second half.
Play resumed but heavy
rain continued intermittently
for the duration of
the contest.
“I don’t think this was
indicative of either team’s
best play,” said Mullery
Doar, who has taken over
as head coach of the Raiders
(4-1) after serving as
an assistant coach for the
previous two seasons.
“You’ve got to hand it to
New Trier. They put it together
today.
The Trevians (7-0) were
coming off a successful
tournament appearance in
a St. Louis invitational,
where they defeated teams
from Missouri, Kentucky,
Texas and Wisconsin.
The star of this game
was Kathryn McLaughlin,
a junior who didn’t play in
St. Louis because she was
playing in an ice hockey
tournament with the Chicago
Young Americans,
one of the premier teams
in the Midwest.
A minute after North
Shore Country Day sophomore
Jane Scullion opened
the scoring with 7 minutes,
24 seconds elapsed,
McLaughlin found the net
to tie the score.
Late in the half,
give the Trevians the lead
was rejected by senior
goalie Abby Renaud but
she persisted and managed
to find the net for the goahead
goal with 2:12 remaining
in the half.
With 76 seconds elapsed
in the second half, junior
Eve Lake scored the Trevians’
third goal — shortly
before the lightning that
accompanied the rain temporarily
halted play — and
their last goal came from
the stick of senior Faith
Stineman with 97 seconds
left in the game.
Not only does North
Shore Country Day have
a small enrollment the
school has three other fall
sports — volleyball, tennis
and cross-country —
competing for the girls on
campus. For freshmen and
sophomores, that means
the opportunity to get significant
playing time on
the field hockey team.
“We have as many freshmen
as seniors,” Doar said.
“We have a lot of young
players so getting them in
games like this is great because
they get experience
and exposure.”
