Readers respond to
Islington Tavern owner
Stephen ‘Sooty’ Moffett
selling The Swamp after 26
years
Caroline Papa – End of an
era.
Anya Georgeson – Every
time I hear Dave Dobbyn’s Loyal,
brings back great memories.
Jason Biddulph – Had good
times there. Most popular place
to shout you lunch because it’s
free.
Heather Boyes – Awesome
write up for you Sooty.
Kylie Williams – Oh the
memories.
Joan Keagan – Had some
great meals there over the years.
Heather Wilkins – I went to
Sockburn School and see it’s now
named Wigram School. Sure is
disappearing. Also Wigram Air
Force base closing didn’t help the
area along with the pool, freezing
works, motorways, tyre shop
and the council. What a disgrace
that is along with the old testing
station. Probably other places we
you’ve forgotten.
Tracey Taylor – Wow . . . 26
years. Can’t tell you the last time
I was ever there, long, long ago.
Carol Drinkwater – Was a
good pub back in the 60s and 70s.
Heather Wilkins – The cafe
that is at the pub closes at the
same time. Such a shame as it’s a
good cafe too.
Readers respond to
last week’s story about
Sockburn disappearing
from the city
Delwyn Whelan – I agree,
nice to read some history of the
area.
Hamish Middleton – It’s
disappearing because the
Christchurch City Council never
give anything to the community.
Took the pool, took the service
centre, do very little maintenance
or beautification of the area. If
the CCC hadn’t closed the
pool then the area would have
remained a recreational hub for
all of Riccarton. No idea why we
pay rates.
Mel Eade – I don’t understand
why they took the pool
away. I know my kids would have
loved going there knowing that
their mum, aunty and uncle used
to spend most of their summer
there.
Jamie RD – It’s already
gone. The only thing there
of value is the Sockburn
roundabout. Should rename
it Wigram roundabout and be
done.
