A team of 14 Frankfort
School District 157-C staff
members, along with two
staff members from Lincoln-
Way Area Special Education
District 843, became certified
in the use of an overdose
reversal medication at a recent
training in New Lenox.
Your Light Still Shines:
An International Overdose
Awareness Day Event was
presented by the Village of
New Lenox and the New
Lenox Safe Communities
America Coalition and educated
citizens on how they
can work to combat narcotics
addiction and overdose. The
event was held Aug. 30 in the
New Lenox Commons.
Training on the use of
Narcan, the brand name
overdose reversal medication
naloxone, was offered.
Superintendent Maura Zinni
received the training, as
did Principal Doug Wernet,
Dean Ryan Talaga and nurse
Deb Busch from Chelsea Intermediate
School; Principal
Will Seidelmann, Assistant
Principal Tricia Dotson, Assistant
Principal Lexi Oreluk,
social worker Diane
Heimlich, social worker
Lauren Cibella, physical
education/health instructor
Pam Dettman, physical
education/health instructor
Sean Connolly, Athletic Director
Jen Rodgers and nurse
Sue Schipiour from Hickory
Creek Middle School.
From District 843, nurse
Nancy Antonini and Executive
Director Sarah Rexroad
also received the training.
In August, the D157-C
Board of Education officially
amended policy 7:270
Administering Medicines to
Students, updating it to reflect
state law, which allows
schools to keep the medication
on hand.
All 14 D157-C staff members
who attended the training
received two doses of
Narcan, a nasal spray. The
trained staff can administer
this spray to anyone in need
in the district’s buildings, including
visitors.
In Will County, there were
117 accidental overdoses in
2017, and there have been 82
accidental overdoses so far
this year, according to statistics
from the Will County
Coroner’s Office.
“Taking a team of district
staff to this training was educational
and eye-opening,”
Zinni said. “This national
epidemic has impacted our
community, and as education
professionals, we need
to recognize the statistics
and be prepared in the event
we were presented with a
situation where one of our
students or adults visiting
our campuses was in need
of this life-saving treatment.
Though we hope to never
have to use our training, we
are now prepared with the
tools and skills to save a life.”
The week after the New
Lenox event, a Joliet man
who received the same training
as district staff used
Narcan to save a man’s life,
according to Will County
Executive Lawrence Walsh’s
Office.
With this training, district
staff may be able to do the
same in an emergency situation.
Parents in the Lincoln-
Way area are invited to attend
a free presentation by
New York Times bestselling
author Julie Lythcott-Haims
from 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 18
at Lincoln-Way East High
School.
The speaking event is set
to take place in the school’s
auditorium and is being
hosted jointly by Frankfort
School District 157-C and
Lincoln-Way Community
High School District 210.
Lythcott-Haims is the author
of “How to Raise an
Adult: Break Free of the
Overparenting Trap and Prepare
Your Kid for Success.”
In her talk, based on the
book, Lythcott-Haims will
draw on her own insights
as a mother and as a student
dean at Stanford University
to highlight the ways in
which overparenting harms
children, parents, and society
at large. While empathizing
with the parental
hopes and, especially, fears
that lead to overhelping,
Lythcott-Haims inspires audiences
to examine their behaviors
and join the growing
movement to allow children
to develop the resourcefulness,
resilience, and inner
determination necessary for
success.
“Frankfort School District
157-C is pleased to partner
with Lincoln-Way High
School District 210 to bring
this national speaker to our
community,” D157-C Superintendent
Maura Zinni
said. “Ms. Lythcott-Haims’
message is important for all
of us to hear as we work together
with our families to
raise strong, confident and
caring children.”
“We are looking forward
to Ms. Lythcott-Haims’ humorous
yet impactful insights
on overparenting and
micromanaging, as well as
learn ways to build grit and
resilience in our children to
become successful adults,”
D210 Director of Instruction
Aimee Feehery said.
Lythcott-Haims has spoken
at schools throughout
the nation, inspiring parents,
teachers and administrators
with her presentations. She
also presented a TED Talk
on “How to Raise an Adult”
in 2016 that has more than 3
million views.
The event will be held in
Lincoln-Way East’s auditorium.
Copies of the author’s
book will be available for
purchase. The author will
sign her book from 5:30-6
