Lincoln-Way East keeps eyes on prize
Three things to know
about the LW East-
Sandburg game
1. Jack Baltz had a
career day
The senior
quarterback,
who committed
to Illinois State
University earlier
in the week, went
7-of-16 for 145
yards and three
touchdowns.
2. East's running
backs played a big
role
During the second
half of the game,
the Griffins' Collin
Beneturski and
Cameron Cartee
each scored on
touchdown runs for
the team.
3. Sandburg's offense
struggled
The Eagles were
only able to get
one first down on
offense the entire
game, while nine
of the team's 12
possessions ended
in a three-and-out.
Tim Cronin, Freelance Reporter
If the drama club at Lincoln-Way
East wanted to
stage a play called “New
Faces of 2018,” it could start
casting with the Griffins’
girls golf team.
Only three of the Top 5 are
holdovers from last year, and
only Sam Bollman is a senior.
Grace Wilk and Jessica
Loera are back from last season’s
squad, which finished
second in its regional, but
Kailey White and Natalie
Papa are new to the team.
And Papa is a freshman.
That helped contribute to
an 11th-place finish in the
Gold Division of the Celtic
Swing Invitational, held Saturday,
Sept. 15, at Ravisloe
Country Club. The team total
of 379 was well above what
was hoped for, and 65 strokes
behind winner Lincoln-Way
Central, whose 26-over-par
Joe’s perfect week puts him back in a tie with
Heather for first. The others are close enough to
smell their exhaust, and neither have catalytic
converters.
Other Games to Watch
• Lockport (0-4) at Andrew (3-1)
• Brother Rice (4-0) at Providence (4-0)
• LW West (3-1) at Homewood-Flossmoor (4-0)
• Sandburg (2-2) at Thornton (2-2)
• Tinley Park (2-2) at TF North (1-3)
314 was led by Grace Curran’s
1-under 71.
“Today was a tough day;
the course was something
new that we haven’t seen,”
coach Mary McGivern said.
“The girls really fought hard
on it, but we really like where
we are heading into our conference
tournament.”
The Griffins are 105-17 in
team matches the previous 11
years under McGivern, along
with four regional titles and a
pair of team appearances in
the state championship.
This year, they grabbed
second in the Lincoln-Way
Cup behind overwhelming
favorite Lincoln-Way Central.
McGivern would love
a runner-up finish in the upcoming
SouthWest Suburban
Blue tournament at Silver
Lake’s North Course, and
even more, the same placing
in the Class 2A regional at
Lincoln Oaks on Oct. 3. The
top three regional teams advance
to sectional play.
Last year, with Hannah
Hill the leader, the Griffins
grabbed second in the regional
with a four-player score of
387. Hill, whose 82 led the
way, and Kerigan McAllister
were seniors last year. Bollman,
Wilk and Loera were
also members of the quintet.
White led the Griffins with
an 18-over 90 at Ravisloe,
followed by Wilk’s 95, Bollman’s
96, Papa’s 98 – inflated
by needing four to get out of
an impossible lie on the edge
of a greenside bunker on the
18th hole – and Loera’s 101.
The first four scores added up
to the team total.
“White is just consistent,
strikes the ball well,” Mc-
Givern said. “She has to continue
to work on the finesse
around the greens, but she’s
been a really solid performer
for us. I did know that she and
