Steve Wise, along with other American Red Cross volunteers and staff members, were deployed to Durham, North Carolina Sept. 11 for three weeks for the disaster relief mission. Wise’s role is to be on hand at the megashelter. It’s a responsibility he’s already familiar with having helped at the megashelter in Dallas last year after Hurricane Harvey flooded the Houston area. In Durham, he said he will serve in a community partnership role based in unified command where he will work with agencies, like Salvation Army HALF SOLD! and United Way, to provide services to the occupants. His efforts on the east coast come nearly two months after his most recent Red Cross initiative at Marshalltown, Iowa after a tornado swept through town. “My wife and I were blessed throughout our lives and wanted to pay it back,” Wise said. “So I found the Red Cross.” Wise has been with the Red Cross for more than two years. The transition was seamless after retiring. Now I’m helping people recover.” For Wise, these endeavors are eye-opening experiences. Oftentimes, he meets people going through the worst day of their lives. He recalled his time in Dallas where people in the Houston area were rescued from their homes by boat, then transported by military plane to the megashelter. He said each person was allowed to bring a few belongings, and oftentimes those would be destroyed or wet because of the flooding they dealt with. “You can’t put a price tag on helping somebody,” he said. “Last year with helping with the megashelter and recently over at Lighthouse Pointe Estates Sales Office & Models: 8890 Holland Harbor Circle Frankfort OPEN HOUSE! So we’re there to help them with those initial steps. Imagine having your life turn upside down in less than 24 hours.” “Like last year, when I was at the megashelter, I was able to help replace those tears with smiles. And you could see the confidence in them that they know there are a lot of agencies out there that are willing to help them out, and they can recover from this.” This will be Wise’s first time providing aid in the midst of a natural disaster. However, he said the ability to help many in need outweigh the concern of being in potential danger.
