2018 South Dakota Nurses Association reminders and patient education to those with chronic illnesses such as: Diabetes, Weight issues, Heart disease, COPD. February: Some members of District 4 attended Nurses Day at Legislature February 5-6, 2018 in Pierre. March 19, 2018: Met briefly after the annual meeting of Rho Xi Honor Society at Research Day. April 16, 2018: Tour of Wound Care Center at Avera St Lukes Hospital. A very educational presentation was given by Amanda VanHatten. There are many new advancements in wound care and the use of hyperbaric treatment. May 9, 2018: District 4 and Rho Xi provided lunch for the 2018 Presentation College nursing graduates and to celebrate Nurses Week. The new grads where doing the Kaplan Review course. Incidentally all 9 of the PC oncampus students passed the 2018 NCLEX boards. June: Summer break DISTRICT REPORTS July: Mother Nature cooperated with a pleasant evening for District 4 and Rho Xi Honor Society to gather for a summertime potluck picnic at Marlys and Dennis Volzke residence. August 14-19, 2018: Over 140 interactions were recorded in the Brown County Fair First Aid Station. The mobile unit is provided by Avera St Lukes and is staffed by nurses from the community. New this year to the First Aid Station was a Mother’s Room for nursing or pumping. The women who used the room expressed appreciation for the quiet, cool and comfortable setting to feed their babies. September 17, 2018: Presentation and tour of the Aberdeen VA clinic. There are many programs, research and services offered to men and women who have served in the military. Professional Recognition is included in each meeting agenda. Advanced degrees, certifications, promotions, retirements, weddings, births, deaths. Meeting reminders and upcoming events for member and non-member nurses in the community are communicated through SDNA District 4 group e-mail contact and the SDNA District 4 RN Facebook group. As of this writing, there are 97 members on the Facebook page. District 10 Annual Report We had our spring conference with about 35 people in attendance. We heard from a SANE nurse, lecture on Workplace Violence, A Call to Freedom and human trafficking, and finally Homeopathic patient care. If anyone has suggestions for next year’s conference please let me know. We will begin meeting again in August on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at CJ Calloway’s. Invitation will come via email soon. I will ask that you RSVP me so that we can let the restaurant know how many they can plan for, especially if we all order food. As the new district president I would like to welcome all members of the district to become involved in our organization. We are the voices of our district. If we are not active, we are not heard. We are also in need of a new secretary and treasurer for our group. If you would like to do either of these please let me know. 28
2018 South Dakota Nurses Association DISTRICT REPORTS I would love to see our district flourish and be an example for our state on being involved in our profession, starting with the students that we mentor. Students are certainly welcome to our district meetings. We will try to do a 30 minute educational piece followed by our meeting. I am going to be working with drug companies to see if they can help us out or I may ask one of you to present on a current topic. I am open for any ideas or thoughts that any of you may have. This is your organization. Vicky Buhr, RN, MSN, CNP, APRN District 10 President District 11 Annual Report After the 2017 Convention, members of District 11 were able to “breathe a sigh of relief” but also wish to thank the SDNA Board, the SDNA members attended, Eric Olilla and most of all, the District 11 members for helping make that convention a memorable one for all. We received comments on many facets of the convention but the majority reflected the tour of the historic Mead Building at the South Dakota Human Services Center. Thanks to the staff at the Mead Building for the guided tours. In October, we held our meeting at the Yankton Pizza Ranch. At the Pizza Ranch, our organization participated in a fund raiser whereby the funds earned were donated to the Servant Hearts Clinic, a free clinic in Yankton. District 11 was able to donate $386.38 earned at this event to the Servant Hearts Clinic. At the October meeting, Franni Kieffer, Director of the Servant Hearts Clinic presented the philosophy, fundraising and the changes at the Clinic since the last fund raiser held by District 11 in October of 2016. During the 2017/2018 year, District 11 held several educational opportunities for the district members, other nurses and for the area student nurses. In December of 2017, our group hosted Gerry Ebel, Licensed Addictions Counselor (LAC) for a presentation on “Marijuana: Issues, Problems and Education.” This presentation was very well received by SDNA members, other nurses and community members who were interested in this timely topic. In January of 2018, Gerry Ebel again presented to us a presentation entitled, “Education on a Current Concern: Opioids.” This presentation included key points such as “opioids do what they’re supposed to do; they alleviate pain and provide short term relief and also help one feel better and forget. They also “help a person get through the day.” Gerry described how a tolerance for opioids happens and it takes “more to get the same effect.” He asked the question, “when does a medication become a ‘drug’?” At the April 2018 meeting, Representative Jean Hunhoff presented a program, “The 2018 Legislative Session” to our group. She discussed the topics of increased home schooling with parents’ concerns about available options, a cemetery for veterans in South Dakota as well as sex trafficking. She also discussed that pharmacies can provide cost sharing information and not be penalized. Other topics were the opioid problem, the death penalty for the mentally ill and current staff shortages (especially at the Veteran’s Home and at the South Dakota Human Services Center). Medicaid reimbursements (120,000 recipients in South Dakota—65% are children), Medicaid expansion, the three long-term care facilities that have closed in South Dakota and the state budget rounded out her presentation. Jean’s presentation was very interesting and well-received by the members present and the seven Mt. Marty College student nurses present.
