2018 South Dakota Nurses Association SDNA COMMITTEE REPORTS Nominations Committee Report Annual Book of Reports 2018 Linda Burdette, Chair SDNA members were notified via e-mail and the South Dakota Nurse in the spring about leadership opportunities available for election in 2018. Members were invited to submit nomination materials. The committee met via conference calls to share information on interested nominees, fill in the open positions and finalize the ballot. 2018 South Dakota Nurses Association SDNA COMMITTEE REPORTS Nurses’ Strategic Action Team (N-STAT) Update As members of the most trusted profession in the United States, nurses can wield much political influence. I would encourage each of you to reach out to a member of Congress for any of an abundance of issues, including insurance reform, Medicare reimbursement, as well as other health care related issues. The bedside nurse providing direct care sees the impact of health care policies on their patients and how it affects the ability to provide care. Nurses see how rules, regulations and laws impact the providers, as well as the facilities and the organizations that employ nurses. The impact we have to lead change right now is immense and will play a critical role in the changing health care landscape. The best place to meet members of Congress is on their home turf. Seek out opportunities to visit with them, be at events, set up an appointment or invite them to an SDNA event. Seek out and learn the positions of both SDNA and ANA on the issues. Check out the websites for information: SDNA’s website is www.sdnursesassociation.org and ANA’s is www.nursingworld.org. Nurses can influence policy at any level, whether it is at the bedside, the boardroom or in their communities. I believe that nurses have the obligation to serve the health of our society, and we need to know about the issues and the regulatory agencies that oversee our professions and make sure that we are advocating in a responsible and responsive way. Thanks for being a member of SDNA. You are a valuable member of the largest nurse advocacy group in South Dakota. 39
