THE HORWICH
POPPY TRAIL BOOK
This ‘Poppy Trail Book’ details the ultimate sacrifice made
by 254 Horwich men during the Great War of 1914–1918.
Members of Horwich Heritage painstakingly researched the
details of every man killed during WW1, including details
of their miltary background, and where they use to live
in our town. The creation of this Poppy Trail map depicts
the enormity and scale of the sacrifice given by our fellow
Horwichers.
These men, lived and worked within our community, many
of the names you will still recognise as their relatives still
live in this wonderful town.
Using Ordinance Survey maps from 1908 and 1928,
Horwich Heritage identified the homes in which they lived –
yet sadly, would never return.
This ‘Poppy Trail’ book will bring history right into your
homes, literally. Some of you will now be living in the very
same house, next door or even in the same street of one of
the 256 Horwich hero’s.
As we commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the end of
the Great War in 2018, lets take a moment to remember
them – take pride that someone who once lived in your
house or in your street gave their life for our community,
our town and our Country.
Horwich Heritage have also produced a commemorative
poster for each of the houses identified – If you have
received one, why not place it with pride in your window as
a personal act of remembrance.
