Every day, I receive hundreds (seriously) 

of emails from people, places, and PR 

firms about everything from upcoming 

events to hot products and editorial 

opportunities. Some go straight to spam, 

others demand immediate attention, and 

a few can make or break my entire day. 

A few weeks ago, a message arrived 

from Sacramento Pizza Company in 

Folsom that stopped me in my speedreading 

tracks. One of the owners 

announced she wanted to add a 

“STYLE Pizza” to 

their menu—in 

honor of October 

being National 

Pizza Month—and 

requested that 

we come up with 

the toppings. Talk 

about a tall, albeit

When we put

together here at HQ and thought about 

what should go on our namesake pie, 

we decided it needed to represent our 

team: colorful, creative, unconventional, 

fun, a little fiery, and well-balanced— 

ultimately resulting in a combination that

Howard 

Andrea Howard still remembers 

being the shy only child of workingclass 

parents—her father was a 

dispatcher for JCPenney and her 

mother was an executive assistant. 

She went on to attend college—the first member 

of her family to do so—and completed a degree in 

business administration. Her prior experience as an 

intern at an architectural firm ignited her interest in 

pursuing real estate, but she wasn’t as keen about 

buying and selling property; instead, she wanted 

to get involved in the behind-the-scenes aspects 

of the field—designing a neighborhood from the 

ground up and putting together all the pieces of 

community life. Over two decades later, Howard 

is the principal planner at Parker Development 

Company and lives and works at Serrano, a gated 

community she helped develop. 

As the vice president of Marshall 

Foundation’s Board of Trustees and the most 

recent recipient of the organization’s Trustee of 

the Year (TOY) Award, Howard is also dedicated 

to giving back. After her father’s death from 

suicide in 2011, she directed a $2,000 fund 

from the El Dorado Community Foundation 

toward an initiative to reduce teen suicide. In 

addition, she serves on numerous community 

boards, including the Boys & Girls Club El 

Dorado County Wester Slope, Hands4Hope, 

and the Center for Violence-Free Relationships.

build stronger roots in community,” she shares.

annual Trick-or-Treat on Main Street 

celebration on October 31. 

The safe, family-friendly night of fun 

and whimsy begins on Main Street, 

where stores stay open late for trickor-treating 

from 4-6 p.m. and a DJ 

broadcasts live from the Bell Tower. 

Families with kiddos ages 10 and under 

are invited to the children’s carnival 

at Town Hall from 4-6 p.m. for games, 

prizes, and treats. 

At 5:30 p.m., gather around the Bell 

Tower for an all-ages costume contest 

hosted by the Placerville Active 

20-30 Club; prizes are awarded by

to Cameron Park Lake for an 

afternoon of fabboolous fun at 

the Halloween Carnival/Pumpkin 

Patch on October 20. From 1:30-4 p.m., ages 

2-12 will enjoy old-fashioned carnival games, 

prizes, crafts, food, and refreshments. 

Artists and crafters applications are being 

accepted for the Christmas Craft Faire on 

November 17 at the Community Center from 10 

a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Events for mature adults this month include 

bridge on Monday at 1 p.m. and Wednesday at 9:30 

a.m., bingo on October 9 from 1-3 p.m., and a Senior 

Nutrition Lunch every Monday and Friday at noon.

Sisters Cathy Porter and Bernadette Guimarin are the forces behind 

Forever Glass, the Placerville-based company taking glass bottles from 

special events, melting them and then spinning the hot glass to make oneof-a-kind 

keepsake bowls. Self-taught glass artist, Cathy, and retired USAF veteran and 

world traveler, Bernadette, also provide job-training and employment for adults on the autism 

spectrum. “The wedding bowl is the newest tradition in weddings, and we’re creating it using 

couples' champagne toast bottles,” says Bernadette. “When a couple’s wedding day ends, they 

have some photos, a dress, a piece of cake, and their memories—we’re giving them an actual 

piece of their wedding…their first family heirloom.”

HLB: What’s the inspiration behind Forever Glass? 

BG: Forever Glass was formed from necessity—the need for 

a fulfilling life for adults with autism. Finding purpose for a 

disabled son or daughter is a driving force for parents—one that 

creates fear and sometimes desperation as they reach their later 

years. The [reality is], there are very few opportunities available 

for their adult children after the parents are gone. 

HLB: How are you able to foster employment for those with 

autism? 

BG: We’ve spent the past couple of years fine-tuning the 

HLB: Once you receive the glass, how is a 

wedding bowl created? 

BG: First, we photograph every set of bottles, 

along with an order tracking form; next, the 

bottles are soaked and de-labeled. The glass 

is then crushed, cleaned, dried, and ready for 

firing. The glass gets fired at 2,250 degrees for 

12 hours. We then pour the hot molten glass 

into a mold and spin the glass to give it an 

upward splash, which makes our unique, 

one-of-a-kind designs. After cooling, we do 

a quality control check and ready the bowl 

for shipping. We also keep a small reserve 

of everyone’s glass—just in case they want 

something made out of it in the future. 

HLB: How did you discover your skill of 

glass artistry? 

CP: I began working with glass over 20 years 

ago while homeschooling my son. It seemed 

that using art and a hands-on approach went 

a long way in lesson plans. Although I’m not 

an expert in how others with autism would 

learn in the same situation, it worked for us, 

and now it works here at Forever Glass. As a 

parent with a disabled child and a caregiver 

of a parent with Alzheimer’s, I also use the 

studio as a means of self-preservation and 

art therapy. Everyone can use a little quiet 

time for reflection and rejuvenation.

8 Ways to Reduce Your 

Breast Cancer Risk

Approximately one in eight women around the 

world will be diagnosed with breast cancer,” says 

Mili Arora, MD, an oncologist at the UC Davis 

Comprehensive Cancer Center. “Despite this 

statistic, the overall incidence of breast cancer 

is decreasing—both in part due to better screening as well as better 

therapies for early stage disease.” 

So what’s your risk? And is there anything you can do to lower 

your chances of being diagnosed? With October being Breast Cancer 

Awareness Month, local doctors shared eight ways for you to take 

action now. 

1 Ask about your family history. 

In January 2018, there were 3.1 million women in the U.S. with a family 

history of breast cancer. It’s the most common cancer in women, 

second only to skin cancer, says Rashmi Ramasubbaiah, MD, an 

oncologist associated with Marshall Medical Center. “Talk to your family 

members and [have an open dialogue] about cancer,” she suggests. 

“Parents, siblings, and children are first-degree relatives; aunts, uncles, 

grandparents, and grandkids are second-degree relatives. Make a 

family tree. Ask specifically about cancers of breast, ovaries, prostate, 

stomach, thyroid, colon, sarcoma, uterus, and melanoma of the skin.” 

2 Know your body. 

The frequency of performing self-breast exams is somewhat 

controversial, Dr. Arora says. “That being said, the most important thing 

is that you do them! It should be a reminder for you to undergo clinical 

breast exams with your primary care provider.” Daniel Herron, MD, a 

diagnostic radiology specialist with Mercy Imaging Centers, wants 

you to recognize when your breasts change. “Instead of encouraging 

women to regularly examine their own breasts, it’s recommended 

that women become more aware of the normal appearance and feel 

of them. If a woman notices a mass, discharge from one of her nipples, 

dimpling or puckering of the skin, pulling in of the nipple, an area of 

redness, or new pain in part of a breast, she should notify her health 

care provider,” he says. 

3 Get check-ups. 

For women of average risk (meaning no family history of breast or 

ovarian cancer), annual screening mammograms are recommended 

for women at 40 years old, and a clinical breast exam and general

awareness of breast cancer is recommended for women between 25-40 

years old, Dr. Ramasubbaiah says. Kristie Bobolis, MD, medical director of 

Sutter Roseville Medical Center’s breast cancer program, says if there’s a 

family history of breast or ovarian cancer, you should talk to your doctor 

about a more comprehensive risk assessment to see if you qualify for 

enhanced breast screening, including breast MRI scans, starting even 

younger than age 40. 

4 Don’t ignore it if you feel a lump. 

Most of the time, breast lumps tend to be benign—only 15 percent are 

potentially cancerous—Dr. Ramasubbaiah says. If it persists and doesn’t 

go away within one week, get it checked. “It doesn't matter how old you 

are. If you feel a breast lump, please get it evaluated; additionally, look 

for change in contour of the breast, with new breast dimpling, nipple 

discharge, nipple retraction, redness of breast, or a lump under the 

armpit.” 

5 Be aware of when the odds change. 

Dr. Herron says the reason we recommend women begin testing for breast 

cancer at age 40 is because a woman in her 30s has a 1 in 227 chance of 

getting cancer. That changes to 1 in 68 in her 40s. The risk then gradually 

increases, with women in their 70s having a 1 in 26 chance of getting 

breast cancer. 

6 Make healthy choices whenever 

possible. 

“We’re learning that one’s lifestyle does 

indeed have a connection to breast 

cancer,” says Ernie Bodai, MD, director of 

the Breast Cancer Survivorship Institute 

at Kaiser Permanente in Sacramento. 

“Some of the more significant risk 

factors include being obese, eating 

unhealthily, and having a sedentary 

lifestyle.” The best way to minimize 

your risk is to live a healthy lifestyle, 

which consists of a nutritious diet. Dr. 

Bodai recommends minimizing your 

intake of meat and dairy products and 

concentrating more on whole food, 

plant-based diets. “These healthier 

diets include fresh fruits and vegetables, avoiding processed foods as 

much as possible, getting your protein from beans and legumes, and 

having a small amount of nuts and seeds.” 

7 Maintain an active lifestyle. 

Exercise and sleep are both important for your health, which can be “as 

simple as walking 30 minutes a day for five days a week,” Dr. Bodai says. 

“We need to get adequate sleep, because being well-rested decreases 

stress, and stress is another promoter of inflammation and malignancy.” 

He also advises against tobacco use and suggests minimizing alcohol 

consumption. 

8 If it’s an option, breastfeed your baby. 

Dr. Herron confirms that breastfeeding lowers your risk of breast cancer. 

“The longer, the better,” he says. “Women breastfeeding a lifetime total 

of more than two years have the most benefit. It will also lower your risk 

of diabetes and ovarian cancer.”

Each winter, a herd of migratory 

Pacific mule deer returns to a 

23,000-acre range in the Sierra 

Nevada. When the herd’s winter home 

was in danger of being developed as a dirt 

bike park 30 years ago, a group of local El 

Dorado County residents joined forces 

to stop it. Discovering that by speaking 

up they could make an impact, the small 

group continued to take on issues that 

threatened the area’s wildlife habitat. 

Today, the Center for Sierra Nevada 

Conservation (CSNC) remains active in 

advocating for local, state, and federal 

policies that will better protect the 

Eldorado National Forest’s voiceless: its 

wildlife and water resources. 

“The mid-’80s was a time when there 

were many threats to our public lands,” 

says Karen Schambach, one of CSNC’s 

founders. “At the same time, the Eldorado 

was in the midst of creating a new forest 

plan designed to guide the forest for the 

next 15-20 years. We wanted to create a 

way for citizens to engage in the planning 

process.” 

Since then, CSNC has influenced many 

land use decisions with the health of the 

forest’s wildlife and watersheds in mind. 

In recent years, it shifted to a more active 

role in watershed restoration, creating an 

effective program with grant funding and 

a partnership with the Eldorado where 

volunteers do physical work to repair 

damaged watersheds. 

“Watersheds face death by a thousand 

cuts, quite literally,” Schambach asserts. 

“We perform weekly restoration projects 

with about 50 volunteers. Some people 

come to help almost every week, others 

once a year. Our small projects don’t 

require heavy equipment; we use rakes, 

shovels, and hoes to fill ruts, build 

water bars, and disguise unauthorized 

vehicle intrusions before they become 

established and turn into serious 

watershed threats.” In turn, volunteers 

are rewarded with a day in the forest 

where they learn about watershed 

protection, wildlife, and plants and enjoy 

the company of like-minded people. 

The projects were designed and led by 

two AmeriCorps volunteers: Ben Jenkins 

and Kaitlin Raven. “[The organization] 

began having SNAP (Sierra Nevada 

AmeriCorps Partnership) volunteers in 

2014,” explains Schambach. “Ben and 

Kaitlin are our fourth generation of 

AmeriCorps leaders. They’ve finished 

their terms this fall and how we will take 

a break from restoration projects.” 

One of CSNC’s numerous 

accomplishments was changing the way 

the U.S. Forest Service regulates off-road 

vehicles (ORVs). The group advocated for 

the effects of ORV use to be analyzed, 

and then for action to be taken to manage 

the damaging use accordingly. The result 

of this local effort became the Travel 

Management Rule, a national regulation 

that requires the U.S. Forest Service to 

monitor ORV use on forest roads and 

trails, protecting wildlife habitats and 

watersheds. 

CSNC’s work is funded by the State 

Off-Highway Vehicle Division of State 

Parks, the Rose Foundation, California 

Alpine Club Foundation, and by member 

dues and fundraisers. 

Schambach is optimistic for the future 

of CSNC’s work and encourages nature 

enthusiasts to help be a voice for the Sierra 

Nevada. “We’re always looking for people 

with an interest in our national forests to 

join us!” sierranevadaconservation.org

Legends of Lotus

In 1849, the town of Marshall 

sprang up just west of 

Coloma and around the 

bend on the South Fork of 

the American River. Named 

in honor of the discoverer of gold, 

the little town grew as the 49ers 

made their way to California and 

the gold fields. When the state 

was admitted into the union in 

September of 1850, the patriotic 

townsfolk renamed it Uniontown. 

In 1881, after the United States 

Postal Service opened an office 

there, the name was changed to 

Lotus, since another town had 

already laid claim to the name 

Uniontown. 

By 1857, the town boasted 

several stores, a carriage shop, 

a library, and Poague’s Bridge, which connected the inhabitants of Uniontown 

with Michigan Flat, Magnolia Ranch, and Georgetown Road and was estimated 

to cost $8,000. A young man by the name of Stephen Wing helped repair and 

build toll gates for it. According to Wing, it had “one long span of 150 feet and 

two short ones about 50 feet each. It is well built and a good job of work every 

way.” It was one of only two bridges in the area that connected gold seekers with 

the rich mining areas along the Georgetown Divide. With tolls from 12.5 cents 

for pedestrians to $6 for a wagon with a six-horse team, gatekeeper W.Y. Poague 

likely made back his investment in short order. 

By the mid 1850s, civilization in the form of women and churches began to 

appear in the gold fields. In order to raise money for a Baptist church with a “large 

fine toned bell,” the town issued subscription 

papers and hosted church benefits. On 

February 12, 1858, the church was dedicated 

in a ceremony officiated by Reverend J. Lewis 

Schuck of Sacramento. According to The 

Sacramento Union, the reverend also “preached 

to Chinamen in their own language” at 3 p.m. 

that afternoon. 

By 1871, most of the parishioners had 

moved away, services had ceased at the 

church, and the building fell into disrepair. 

The fine toned bell rang no more, although 

it still hung in the belfry. Learning of this, 

a former minister of the church came and 

took it—without consulting the remaining 

trustees—and put it on an express wagon 

from Coloma to Sierra County where he lived. 

The citizens were outraged and followed 

the minister to Coloma where they contacted 

the justice of the peace. The justice instructed 

them to hire a lawyer to draw up papers 

on the affair. The offending minister, who 

had apparently thought this through, had 

already retained all the lawyers in town to 

thwart such an effort. However, one young 

lawyer was found who wrote up the required 

papers and presented them to the constable. 

The bell was arrested and put in jail, the 

offending minister quietly disappeared, and 

the bell “remained in jail, probably awaiting 

its trial.”

10 Steps to an Organized Closet

Is it just me or do you process change by 

cleaning and organizing, too? A feeling of 

“everything in its place”—at work and 

at home—gives me a sense of general 

life order. And what better place to start 

organizing than your closet? As we enter 

the busiest time of the year, here are my top tips 

for making your closet clutter-free. 

1//Make it a Family Affair 

Getting your partner and kids involved in 

organizing can make a difference in your family’s day-to-day 

life. Everyone should be in charge of his or her own clothes, 

accessories, and toys. This will cut your cleaning time in half and 

ensure nothing important is thrown away by mistake. 

2//Start from Scratch 

Pulling everything (yes, everything!) out of your closet is the 

most effective way to get to the bottom of it. If you don’t, chances 

are, the same unworn clothes will end up staying 

in your closet. 

3//Stage a Rolling Rack 

Staging your items on a rolling rack makes the 

step above a much easier task. Not only can you 

see what you’re dealing with, but you can ask 

yourself: “Should this really go back in my clean 

closet?” 

4//Out with the Odd 

Bank statements, insurance information, and tax documents 

don’t belong next to your shoes, scarves, and sweaters. Remove 

items that have no business in your closet and create a computer 

file to organize and store them in one accessible place; file the 

remaining papers in an office cabinet. 

5//Sort it Out 

Now it’s time to sort. Throw out old and damaged clothing, and

6//Organize in Sections 

Designate a place for everything—shoes in one place, sweaters 

in another, and so on—to help you keep order and save you time 

each morning. Make smart use of the space by installing shelves 

to double your storage and help sweaters and T-shirts better keep 

their shape. 

7//Apply the 80/20 Rule 

You may not want to admit it, but the majority of clothes you have 

probably go unworn. It’s said that the average American only wears 

10-20 percent of their wardrobe. To cut down on the fluff, remove 

items you haven’t worn in a year. Drop off the excess at Goodwill, 

your favorite consignment store, or arrange a clothing swap with 

friends. 

8//Create Consistency 

Are your shoes overtaking the space? Try a hanging-shoe rack, 

over-the-door organizer, or displaying them on shelving by color. 

Do your clothes overcrowd the closet? Use a thin black hanger to 

create space and visual consistency so you can find things more 

easily. Feeling rushed each morning? Dividing shirts, dresses, jeans, 

and jackets will bring a sense of order and save time. Solving your 

biggest challenges will motivate you to create your dream closet.

Popular Elk Grove Chinese restaurant Iron Wok has moved 

into new digs on Main Street—taking over the space that was 

formerly Taste of Europe—and it’s already clear that EG’s loss 

is Placerville’s gain. 

If you visited the former incarnation of this space, you’ll find it 

transformed. Laminate flooring, a warm, muted-yellow coat of paint, 

tasteful art, and white linen tablecloths have really amped up the 

interior to a level that’s both refined and inviting. 

My husband and I dined in on a Saturday evening expecting a quiet 

dinner. To our pleasant surprise, there was a steady stream of takeout 

orders and plenty of patrons filling the tables around us—including 

some loyal regulars from their previous locale. Having only opened in 

June, it’s refreshing to see a new business getting so much local love. 

Serving traditional Chinese comfort food favorites that you know 

and love, Iron Wok’s menu has enough variety to please everyone in 

your party without being overwhelmingly intimidating. 

For starters, we ordered pot stickers, and they arrived just as they 

should: crispy-bottomed, plump, and bursting with flavor-packed pork. 

Dipping the dumplings into the accompanying vinegar, hot oil, and

For entrées, we sampled the 

orange chicken and Mongolian 

beef with steamed rice. The 

servings were generous 

and—like any good Chinese 

restaurant—worth its salt: We 

had enough leftovers for the 

following day’s lunch. The chicken featured huge chunks 

of golden-fried, all-white breast meat bathing in a savory, 

house-made sauce that had just enough heat and sweet 

and actual pieces of roasted orange peel. The beef—with 

its tender slices of wok-seared, melt-in-your-mouth 

meat; light, flavorful marinade that wasn’t at all syrupy; 

and addition of colorful, perfectly al dente onions and, 

scallions—was equally excellent. 

If Iron Wok isn’t already on your restaurant radar, you 

should definitely make an effort to change that ASAP.

which has a few locations throughout the region, recently opened in El Dorado County with a 

24/7 drive-through. Sited in the former home of Schlotzky’s, they serve breakfast all day, plus 

a bevy of burritos, nachos, chimichangas, tostados, tacos, enchiladas, and quesadillas. It’s their 

$11-and-under combination plates that give you the most bang for your buck, however. With 19 

different options to choose from—all served with a heaping helping of rice and refried beans—it 

was not an easy task deciding on the Burrito & Taco combo. The crispy-shelled beef taco—filled 

with tender meat and a sprinkling of cheese—was sizable and had a terrific crunch. The flavors were so good, in fact, that it only needed a dash of 

their house-made hot sauce. My burrito was equally satisfying, thanks to the stewed, shredded chicken that was juicy and had a heavenly amount 

of heat. With such large portions, I was only able to try a few bites before I had to wave the white flag and, happily, wrap the rest up for lunch the

The combination of fruit and cheese dates 

back to ancient times, and we’re keeping 

the tradition alive with this slightly savory 

apple pie.

• 1 tsp. freshly 

squeezed lemon 

juice

together with your fingertips. Add the brown sugar, tapioca starch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 

salt. Add to the apples and toss with your hands until evenly distributed. 

2. When you’re ready to assemble the pie, remove the unbaked crust and lattice strips from 

the refrigerator. Sprinkle the sugar-flour mixture all over the bottom of the crust. Layer the 

apples on top, being careful not to mound them in the center. Dot the apples with butter cubes. 

3. Place one strip of lattice across the center of the pie. Take another strip and lay it on top, 

perpendicular to the first one, creating a cross. Lay the next two strips on either side of the first 

strip you laid down, so they are parallel to both each other and the original strip. Next, working 

with the original strip, fold back both ends toward the center, and then place the last two lattice 

strips down on either side of the second (perpendicular) strip. Fold the original strip back down, 

so that it lies across and on top of the newly placed strips. It should look like a woven lattice. 

4. Tear off the ends of the lattice pieces so they’re flush with the perimeter of the tin. Roll the 

edge of the crust in, sealing the lattice. Crimp, being careful to push the crimps down and into 

the pie, as opposed to keeping them too loose on the edge. Put the assembled pie in the freezer 

for a 15-minute rest. Preheat your oven to 450°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 

5. Remove the pie from the freezer, place on the baking sheet, and brush the lattice and 

crimped edge with the beaten egg. Transfer the baking sheet with the pie on it to the oven and 

bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust is evenly golden brown. Turn the temperature down 

to 325°F and continue to bake for 50-70 minutes, until the pie juices are bubbling in the center. 

6. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and transfer the pie to a wire rack to cool for 4-6 

hours. When the pie is at room temperature, slice it into 6-8 pieces and serve. 

Store leftover pie, well wrapped in plastic wrap or 

under a pie dome, at room temperature for up to two 

days. Makes one, nine-inch pie.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? 

My business found me. While still an undergrad, I wrote to a worldrenowned 

photographer on a whim. She serendipitously was 

looking for interns and invited me to work with her that summer. 

She taught me that the art of photography is about the people, 

the emotions, and the overall experience. To that end, I always 

want my clients to have a great experience and enjoy themselves. 

Having fun helps them feel comfortable, which is crucial to taking 

a great portrait. 

What life accomplishments are you most proud of? 

I lived in Europe for several years and had the opportunity to display 

my work in galleries in different countries. It’s a great feeling 

of accomplishment having someone from a different culture 

appreciate and enjoy something you’ve created. 

What’s your biggest job perk? 

I get to do what I love, meet amazing people, and share beautiful 

moments in people’s lives. It’s ridiculous how often I find myself 

getting teary-eyed at a wedding I’m photographing. 

What’s your favorite childhood memory? 

I was a profound and curious child. On a camping trip with family 

when I was about nine, I remember walking through the forest 

with my dog and wanting to cherish the tranquility and beauty of 

the scene as the sun beat through the trees. I stopped and tried my 

hardest to capture and memorize everything. Over the years, the 

scenery has become fuzzy, but I still recall the event. 

If you could be in any other profession, what would it be? 

I’m an artist at heart and think in some way or another I would 

still be connected to something that allowed me to express my 

creativity.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? 

Out of the Box is a result of 20 years in the photography/scrapbook 

industry, as it became obvious that everyone is overwhelmed with 

an enormous collection of photos—be it boxes of printed images or 

thousands of scattered digital photos on several devices. Our goal is 

to get only the best of our client’s photos into their lives by offering 

ideas that will meet the needs of their family or business—whether 

it’s a traditional or digital photo album, a slideshow, framed photos in 

a gallery, etc. We provide many services, including printed and digital 

photo organizing, creating albums and media conversation (VHS, etc.), 

and a complete on-site scanning department. We never let client’s 

photos out of our hands. Starting with the end in mind, we work with 

them in many different styles—from swooping up all the boxes and 

delivering the end product with a bow tied on it, to working one-onone 

with or guiding the client along as they do the work. We know 

everyone has good intentions, but oftentimes it’s so daunting that it 

never becomes a reality. 

How are you involved with both the community and your 

customer? 

We make an annual donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, in 

honor of our loyal clients. 

What life accomplishments are you most proud of? 

It’s a toss-up between my six children and five grandchildren or pulling 

up my boot straps after a divorce to start this business that has grown 

mainly through word-of-mouth referrals. 

What’s your favorite local business other than your own? 

Sienna Restaurant and Land Ocean New American Grill.

Awards, awards, awards. 

It seems that someone is giving away or receiving an award, wherever you look. So, the big 

question that arises is: Do they mean anything? 

The answer—in the case of our Readers’ Choice Awards—is an easy one: Yes, they 

matter—and they matter to all 

involved: 1) those giving the award; 

2) those receiving the award; and 3) 

the reader, who is making a purchase decision 

because of these awards. 

As marketers, we understand that the 

Readers’ Choice Awards make a huge difference 

to businesses in many ways, most notably, 

awareness. Awareness is where it all begins 

for any business. Simply put, no awareness=no 

business. Do awards mean more sales? A recent 

survey from business.com says yes: 37% more 

sales. 

For the past 12 years, STYLE’s Readers’ Choice 

Awards have generated more voters, and votes, 

than all the other local/regional awards from 

media companies, combined. Yes combined. 

This year was our biggest awards voting ever 

with over 90,000 votes cast, 8,500 of which were 

“write-in” votes—amazing! This is the kind of 

reader involvement that publications can only hope for. Does it say something about our readership 

and involvement in the community? We’ll let you answer that. 

From time to time, we hear that people think our winners are only advertisers, and honestly, 

nothing could be further from the truth. Here are the facts: When we tally all winners from all 

regions, and then do the math, 79% of the winners are not advertisers. 

What this all comes down to is you—the reader. Your engagement with our awards 

platform clearly states that you not only enjoy voting for your favorite businesses, but 

you trust the process and act on the outcome, engaging with our partners by buying 

products and services from them. How do we know that? Because they tell us! 

We are proud to deliver such a meaningful awards platform, one with checks 

and balances and one that utilizes high-end algorithms (had to get the word in!) that 

automatically place questionable results on hold, which allows us to see and review 

abuse, and which keeps the voting results accurate and above board. 

So here you have it—the most in-depth, local business awards available in the 

Sacramento region. Awards you can trust and awards that we know help you make 

decisions. All of us at STYLE are proud to present this year’s winners to you and all 

our 250,000 monthly print and online readers.
