Every day, I receive hundreds (seriously) 

of emails from people, places, and PR firms 

about everything from upcoming events to 

hot products and editorial opportunities. 

Some go straight to spam, others demand 

immediate attention, and a few can make or 

break my entire day. 

A few weeks ago, a message arrived from 

Sacramento Pizza Company in Folsom that 

stopped me in my speed-reading tracks. One 

of the owners announced she wanted to add 

a “STYLE Pizza” to their menu—in honor of 

October being National 

Pizza Month—and 

requested that we 

come up with the 

toppings. Talk about a 

tall, albeit fun, order! 

When we put our 

stomachs together 

here at HQ and thought 

about what should go 

on our namesake pie, 

we decided it needed to represent our team: 

colorful, creative, unconventional, fun, a 

little fiery, and well-balanced—ultimately 

resulting in a combination 

that (literally) works well 

together. The prize-winning 

pizza, which I strongly urge 

you to try, includes pesto, 

mozzarella, feta, sun-dried 

tomatoes, minced garlic, 

basil, and grilled chicken; 

having tried it (see the picture for proof), I 

can honestly say that the slice is nice and 

think you’ll agree. To find even more perfect

78, where we uncover 6 of our favorites. 

Speaking of favorites, in this year’s Readers’

$2 million project will feature training coaches,

Patients undergoing cancer treatment at Sutter Auburn Faith 

Hospital’s Infusion Center were surprised with warm blankets 

and handwritten notes of hope from employees and customers 

at Gold Rush Subaru and the Leukemia 

& Lymphoma Society. The event 

was part of the Subaru Loves to 

Care campaign, which has donated a 

total of 105,000 blankets nationwide... 

Congrats to Sierra College professor 

emritus, editor, and curator Joe 

Medeiros, who was given the national John Muir Association’s 

Conservationist of the Year Award. Equipped with a master’s 

degree from CSU Fresno, Medeiros was honored 

for his efforts to protect the Sierra Nevada 

Mountains and for fostering an appreciation 

for nature in his students through 35 years as 

an educator...Roseville City Council recently 

approved $50,000 in funding to buy media 

materials for Roseville libraries; additionally, 

$32,000 was approved to spend on cloudLibrary/ 

Bibliotheca, which will expand the eBook selection... 

Sutter Auburn Faith Foundation’s scholarship program supplied 

seven worthy Placer County students pursuing health-related 

careers with a total of $12,500 this year: Elisabeth Ramsey, 

Emily Thurmon, Autumn Cameron, Natasha Dev, Rachel Fenner, 

Ariel Miller, and Sarah Stuck...Bob Hunter is the new general 

manager of Von Housen Automotive Group (locations in Rocklin, 

Sacramento, and El Dorado Hills). In addition to building a 

team committed to excellence, Hunter has broken many sales 

records in his 32 years of working in the automotive industry... 

Volunteers for the annual Feed My Starving Children MobilePack 

are expected to pack more than 500,000 meals from October 18- 

20 at William Jessup University. The scientifically designed food 

packs help nurse undernourished and starving children back 

to health...The Roseville Police Department received a $73,500 

grant from the city council to help fight human trafficking. 

Stand Up Placer has also teamed up with the department to 

rescue and empower victims...Rocklin Unified School District 

announced that substitute teachers will be paid $425 a day in the 

event of a teacher strike. Tentative agreements were also made 

regarding a 1.95 percent salary 

and stipend increase and $20 per 

month increase in the health 

benefit cap...Sutter Auburn 

Faith Hospital employees 

provided nearly 100 backpacks 

full of school supplies as part of 

Operation Backpack. The yearly 

campaign organized by Volunteers 

of America delivers backpacks to homeless and at-risk students

Hubbard 

Jessica Hubbard still remembers what 

she saw when her father brought her 

to his workplace at Legal Aid—an 

organization that provides legal counsel 

and support to the underserved. “I have vivid 

memories of seeing attorneys doing pro bono 

work for people in desperate need,” Hubbard 

recalls. “It impacted my entire outlook on life.” 

After graduating from college, Hubbard gravitated 

toward the nonprofit sector, first working for 

the San Francisco Symphony. While there, she 

volunteered at other nonprofits, including an 

organization that helped terminally ill artists 

continue to produce, show, and sell their work. 

Once she and her husband, Josh Kurtz, decided 

to start a family, they ended up moving to Auburn, 

for its vibrant community and 

amazing natural resources. When 

the opportunity arose to become 

Placer Community Foundation’s 

philanthropic services manager, 

Hubbard could hardly believe her 

good fortune. The position allowed 

her to apply her lifelong interest in philanthropy 

by connecting donors to the charitable causes 

they care about in their community. Her passion is 

bringing together philanthropic-minded people— 

of any means—to make a positive difference. Most 

recently, she facilitated a Giving Circle of donors 

who distributed over $40,000 in grants to nine area 

nonprofits to support the needs of Placer County’s 

most vulnerable and at-risk youth. “We’re not 

working with the Bill Gates of the world,” Hubbard 

explains. “We’re working with school teachers, 

local business owners, and doctors. By working 

together, we can make a tremendous impact.”

Though pumpkins are palatable and very versatile, there are 

other must-try winter squashes, including acorn, butternut, 

kabocha, and spaghetti. All of the above take well to a variety 

of seasonings and help liven up soups, casseroles, risotto, 

lasagna, and even desserts. Ask your local farmer about 

varieties you might not be familiar with; all add color 

and interest to autumn-inspired recipes. 

NUTRITION // Naturally low in fat and calories, 

the winter squash family supplies significant 

nutritional benefits. One cup of baked butternut 

squash is rich in vitamins A, B6, C, and E, as well as magnesium, 

potassium, and manganese; spaghetti squash is a superb source of 

fiber and a low-carb alternative to traditional 

pasta. 

SELECTION AND STORAGE // Chose winter 

squash with thick, hard skins that are 

firm and feel heavier than they look. They 

should also have a sturdy stem that’s free 

of soft spots or mold. Avoid squash with 

wrinkled surfaces, cuts, or bruises. Uncut 

winter squash will keep for months in a 

cool, dark, well-ventilated spot. In cooler 

weather, they might like your garage—just set them on straw or 

cardboard, not the concrete floor.

Apple Hill is one of our region’s most popular 

destinations, so if you're planning on visiting,

After majoring in art at Chico 

State University, Diane 

Ruhkala Bell went on to 

study at Chouinard Art 

Institute in Los Angeles. 

Although she ended up working as a 

designer for many years, Ruhkala Bell 

never ceased to create art and continued 

taking classes and workshops near 

her hometown of Rocklin. “I think I’ve 

always been an artist…intrigued by 

shapes, colors, and textures.” These 

days, the multi-faceted artist—whose 

work is found in collections throughout 

the U.S. and abroad in Finland, France, 

and India—creates award-winning, 

ethereal works in a variety of mediums, 

including printmaking, oils, and wax. 

Catch her in action at the annual Art 

Studio Trek next spring. 

HLB: WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT 

YOUR COMMUNITY? 

DRB: I’ve always lived in Rocklin, as did 

my father’s family. I’m fortunate to have 

a large, supportive extended Ruhkala 

family here, as well as my husband, 

who tolerates my messy studio and 

collections of found objects: metal, 

bones, beach finds, and even snakeskin! 

HLB: DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC 

PROCESS. 

DRB: I use many different 

mediums in my artwork. I’ll 

do a series of prints on my 

press, and then a series of 

assemblage pieces using 

the remnants of Rocklin’s 

old quarry sheds. I use 

acrylics and more recently 

encaustic (beeswax and 

resin), cold wax, and oil. I 

often combine several different 

mediums in one piece.

8 Ways to Reduce Your 

Breast Cancer Risk

" 

Approximately one in eight women around the 

world will be diagnosed with breast cancer,” says 

Mili Arora, MD, an oncologist at the UC Davis 

Comprehensive Cancer Center. “Despite this 

statistic, the overall incidence of breast cancer 

is decreasing—both in part due to better screening as well as better 

therapies for early stage disease.” 

So what’s your risk? And is there anything you can do to lower 

your chances of being diagnosed? With October being Breast Cancer 

Awareness Month, local doctors shared eight ways for you to take 

action now. 

1 Ask about your family history. 

In January 2018, there were 3.1 million women in the U.S. with a family 

history of breast cancer. It’s the most common cancer in women, 

second only to skin cancer, says Rashmi Ramasubbaiah, MD, an 

oncologist associated with Marshall Medical Center. “Talk to your family 

members and [have an open dialogue] about cancer,” she suggests. 

“Parents, siblings, and children are first-degree relatives; aunts, uncles, 

grandparents, and grandkids are second-degree relatives. Make a 

family tree. Ask specifically about cancers of breast, ovaries, prostate, 

stomach, thyroid, colon, sarcoma, uterus, and melanoma of the skin.” 

2 Know your body. 

The frequency of performing self-breast exams is somewhat 

controversial, Dr. Arora says. “That being said, the most important thing 

is that you do them! It should be a reminder for you to undergo clinical

breast exams with your primary care provider.” Daniel Herron, MD, a 

diagnostic radiology specialist with Mercy Imaging Centers, wants 

you to recognize when your breasts change. “Instead of encouraging 

women to regularly examine their own breasts, it’s recommended 

that women become more aware of the normal appearance and feel 

of them. If a woman notices a mass, discharge from one of her nipples, 

dimpling or puckering of the skin, pulling in of the nipple, an area of 

redness, or new pain in part of a breast, she should notify her health 

care provider,” he says. 

3 Get check-ups. 

For women of average risk (meaning no family history of breast or 

ovarian cancer), annual screening mammograms are recommended 

for women at 40 years old, and a clinical breast exam and general 

awareness of breast cancer is recommended for women between 

25-40 years old, Dr. Ramasubbaiah says. Kristie Bobolis, MD, medical 

director of Sutter Roseville Medical Center’s breast cancer program, 

says if there’s a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, you should 

talk to your doctor about a more comprehensive risk assessment to 

see if you qualify for enhanced breast screening, including breast MRI 

scans, starting even younger than age 40. 

4 Don’t ignore it if you feel a lump. 

Most of the time, breast lumps tend to be benign—only 15 percent 

are potentially cancerous—Dr. Ramasubbaiah says. If it persists and 

doesn’t go away within one week, get it checked. “It doesn't matter 

how old you are. If you feel a breast lump, please get it evaluated; 

additionally, look for change in contour of the breast, with new breast 

dimpling, nipple discharge, nipple retraction, redness of breast, or a 

lump under the armpit.” 

5 Be aware of when the odds change. 

Dr. Herron says the reason we recommend women begin testing for 

breast cancer at age 40 is because a woman in her 30s has a 1 in 227 

chance of getting cancer. That changes to 1 in 68 in her 40s. The risk 

then gradually increases, with women in their 70s having a 1 in 26 

chance of getting breast cancer. 

6 Make healthy choices whenever 

possible. 

“We’re learning that one’s lifestyle 

does indeed have a connection to 

breast cancer,” says Ernie Bodai, 

MD, director of the Breast Cancer 

Survivorship Institute at Kaiser 

Permanente in Sacramento. 

“Some of the more significant risk 

factors include being obese, eating 

unhealthily, and having a sedentary 

lifestyle.” The best way to minimize 

your risk is to live a healthy lifestyle, 

which consists of a nutritious diet. Dr. 

Bodai recommends minimizing your 

intake of meat and dairy products and 

concentrating more on whole food, 

plant-based diets. “These healthier 

diets include fresh fruits and vegetables, avoiding processed foods as 

much as possible, getting your protein from beans and legumes, and 

having a small amount of nuts and seeds.” 

7 Maintain an active lifestyle. 

Exercise and sleep are both important for your health, which can 

be “as simple as walking 30 minutes a day for five days a week,” Dr. 

Bodai says. “We need to get adequate sleep, because being well-rested 

decreases stress, and stress is another promoter of inflammation 

and malignancy.” He also advises against tobacco use and suggests 

minimizing alcohol consumption. 

8 If it’s an option, breastfeed your 

baby. 

Dr. Herron confirms that breastfeeding lowers your risk of breast 

cancer. “The longer, the better,” he says. “Women breastfeeding a 

lifetime total of more than two years have the most benefit. It will also 

lower your risk of diabetes and ovarian cancer.”

Giving Hope to the Homeless

Sherry Schiele started What Would Jesus Do? (WWJD?) in 1998. It was 

a question she not only pondered but also acted upon, through homeless 

outreach and advocacy. Today, almost 20 years after her death, Schiele’s 

work still continues by determined WWJD? volunteers who strive to help 

the homeless. 

“We have a group of very caring people who want to make a difference by 

helping [others],” says Mike Troy, current president of WWJD?. 

Volunteers assist through social and community outreach, 

food purchasing, site coordination, communications, and 

giving of themselves wholeheartedly, just like Schiele once 

did. 

The non-denominational nonprofit assists Placer 

County’s homeless and working poor through the 

distribution of food, toiletries, blankets, and clothing, among 

other items. Their mission is to compassionately respond to 

the needs of the homeless, in turn, spreading warmth and 

kindness throughout the region. 

Through their mobile ministry, they 

serve around 30,000 meals a year to people in 

Roseville, Auburn, and Colfax and have vans 

that go out into the community providing 

coffee, oatmeal, donuts, hot chocolate, and 

bags of food with enough provisions for 

one day. They often have something for pet 

companions, too. 

Perhaps more importantly, however, 

they provide friendship and a sense that all 

are loved and welcome. “Many of our clients 

have mental issues and substance [abuse] 

problems, but they weren’t always that way,” 

says Troy. “These are the people society has 

given up on…and we just want to help them 

survive.” 

The idea is earnest enough, but even still, 

WWJD? has had some hiccups. Ordinances 

have forced them to limit their reach, 

following complaints made by residents 

who didn’t want to see homeless people in 

their neighborhoods and parks. The irony 

is that most people do want to help, but the 

close proximity of their homeless brethren 

is unsettling to some. Nonetheless, the 

organization soldiers on. “Our plans are to 

continue to try and survive financially and 

give everything we get to those we serve,” 

Troy says. The team has witnessed several 

homeless individuals gain employment 

and obtain transitional housing—some 

have even returned to volunteer with 

the organization—and that sense of 

accomplishment is shared by all involved. 

Those who wish to help can do so by 

adopting their van for a day, which costs 

$130 and will feed the homeless in Roseville 

for one day. WWJD? is also looking to start 

their own signature fundraiser and is 

seeking interested volunteers. Currently, 

their funding comes from individuals—as 

opposed to corporate sponsors—who part 

with $5-$25. 

So why do they do it? According to founder 

Schiele, “There’s never a good reason for 

not helping others,” and it was that looming 

question—“What would Jesus do?”—that 

guided her ministry, her principles, and her 

life. Today, it serves as a poignant reminder 

for WWJD? volunteers to serve the least

10 Steps to an Organized Closet

Is it just me or do you process change by 

cleaning and organizing, too? A feeling of 

“everything in its place”—at work and 

at home—gives me a sense of general 

life order. And what better place to start 

organizing than your closet? As we enter 

the busiest time of the year, here are my top tips 

for making your closet clutter-free. 

1//Make it a Family Affair 

Getting your partner and kids involved in 

organizing can make a difference in your family’s day-to-day 

life. Everyone should be in charge of his or her own clothes, 

accessories, and toys. This will cut your cleaning time in half and 

ensure nothing important is thrown away by mistake. 

2//Start from Scratch 

Pulling everything (yes, everything!) out of your closet is the 

most effective way to get to the bottom of it. If you don’t, chances 

are, the same unworn clothes will end up staying 

in your closet. 

3//Stage a Rolling Rack 

Staging your items on a rolling rack makes the 

step above a much easier task. Not only can you 

see what you’re dealing with, but you can ask 

yourself: “Should this really go back in my clean 

closet?” 

4//Out with the Odd 

Bank statements, insurance information, and tax documents 

don’t belong next to your shoes, scarves, and sweaters. Remove 

items that have no business in your closet and create a computer 

file to organize and store them in one accessible place; file the 

remaining papers in an office cabinet. 

5//Sort it Out 

Now it’s time to sort. Throw out old and damaged clothing, and

Designate a place for everything—shoes in one place, sweaters 

in another, and so on—to help you keep order and save you time 

each morning. Make smart use of the space by installing shelves

7//Apply the 80/20 Rule 

You may not want to admit it, but the majority of clothes you have 

probably go unworn. It’s said that the average American only wears 

10-20 percent of their wardrobe. To cut down on the fluff, remove

your favorite consignment store, or arrange a clothing swap with

8//Create Consistency 

Are your shoes overtaking the space? Try a hanging-shoe rack, 

over-the-door organizer, or displaying them on shelving by color.

Mezcalito Oaxacan 

Cuisine 

Mezcalito translated is “little mezcal”— 

the cactus from which the potent cousin 

of tequila is produced. In this case, it’s also 

the plant that adorns the restaurant’s logo 

and provides a portent into Owner Ruben 

Regalado’s future plans (think mezcal bar!). 

For now, his authentic cuisine from the 

state of Oaxaca, Mexico, is a local favorite, 

and word is spreading fast about the fresh 

ingredients and exquisitos sabores (thank 

you, Google Translate). 

First to arrive was the Oaxacan-style 

ceviche—marinated white sea bass with

fresh tortilla chips, I can’t 

think of a more refreshing 

starter. “A cold cerveza, por 

favor” should be the next 

words from your mouth—if 

you’re of legal age and right 

mind, of course. 

“What’s molcajete? ” 

some may ask. Literally, 

it’s Spanish for the mortal 

and pestle used to grind 

spices, herbs, and grains 

that the dish is prepared 

and served in. If you’re lucky enough to 

see it on a menu, such as the surf and turf 

molcajete at Mezcalito, the said traditional 

kitchen tool becomes a fiery cauldron of 

tongue-searing happiness. As our entrée 

arrived, all eyes were transfixed on its 

steaming bounty of large, wild-caught 

shrimp, mussels, steak, chicken, onions, 

peppers, and nopales (cactus) simmering in 

Mezcalito’s special sauce. Warm tortillas 

appeared just as the cauldron temperature 

settled below blistering. Exquisito!

but when the brain trusts do come to 

their senses, Fish Taco Week would be 

a winner—and Mezcalito’s can fire the 

opening salvo. The Oaxacan version served 

here—featuring grilled cod, green papaya, 

cabbage, mango, avocado, and chipotle aioli 

on warm flour tortillas—will stand up to 

anyone’s…and I’ve eaten my fair share of 

them from all corners of the country. 

Flan or churro? When it’s churros with 

raspberry and caramel sauce and a scoop 

of mezcal-vanilla ice cream, the answer 

should be a given. Need I say more?

Starbread // I’ve just taken my carb game to a whole new level, thanks to Starbread in Roseville. If you haven’t been to this authentic 

Filipino bakery yet, you must go ASAP. They bake everything fresh daily and when you order their heavenly Señorita Bread (also known as 

Spanish bread in the Philippines), it’s given to you hot out of the oven. It’s also the most amazing thing you’ll eat that day…and maybe all week. 

They’re light and airy, so you feel like you’re not eating a lot; they’re buttery and sweet; and they’re small, so you can justify eating more than 

one. I’m not going to tell you how many I ate, but it was (a lot) more than one. Oh, and I went back the next day and bought more. They serve 

other tasty treats too, including Filipino donuts (Malasada) that are round balls of dough filled with Nutella, dulce de leche, or Bavarian cream. 

I highly recommend all of them. Next time, I plan to try Puto (steamed rice muffins), Pandesal (dinner rolls), and Siopao (Filipino steamed

2. When you’re ready to assemble the pie, remove the unbaked crust and lattice strips from 

the refrigerator. Sprinkle the sugar-flour mixture all over the bottom of the crust. Layer the 

apples on top, being careful not to mound them in the center. Dot the apples with butter cubes. 

3. Place one strip of lattice across the center of the pie. Take another strip and lay it on top, 

perpendicular to the first one, creating a cross. Lay the next two strips on either side of the first 

strip you laid down, so they are parallel to both each other and the original strip. Next, working 

with the original strip, fold back both ends toward the center, and then place the last two lattice 

strips down on either side of the second (perpendicular) strip. Fold the original strip back down, 

so that it lies across and on top of the newly placed strips. It should look like a woven lattice. 

4. Tear off the ends of the lattice pieces so they’re flush with the perimeter of the tin. Roll the 

edge of the crust in, sealing the lattice. Crimp, being careful to push the crimps down and into 

the pie, as opposed to keeping them too loose on the edge. Put the assembled pie in the freezer 

for a 15-minute rest. Preheat your oven to 450°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 

5. Remove the pie from the freezer, place on the baking sheet, and brush the lattice and 

crimped edge with the beaten egg. Transfer the baking sheet with the pie on it to the oven and 

bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust is evenly golden brown. Turn the temperature down 

to 325°F and continue to bake for 50-70 minutes, until the pie juices are bubbling in the center. 

6. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and transfer the pie to a wire rack to cool for 4-6 

hours. When the pie is at room temperature, slice it into 6-8 pieces and serve. 

Store leftover pie, well wrapped in plastic wrap or 

under a pie dome, at room temperature for up to two 

days. Makes one, nine-inch pie.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? 

Cellar Door Platters is a cheese and charcuterie platter service—a 

caterer of sorts. The concept came to me when I was running 

a cheese shop in Los Angeles. Making platters was one of my 

favorite things to do in the store, and I thought it would be a fun 

way to combine my cheese and culinary experience and add 

something different to the Northern California food scene. 

What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn 

from the experience? 

I grew up working in a local guitar shop that my family owned. 

Aside from the technical aspect, I learned how to be an employee, 

how to run a small business, how to build relationships with 

clients and vendors, how important it is to be genuine and honest, 

and what it means to have people depend on you. Extremely 

valuable life lessons happened in that little shop. 

Where do you go when the going gets tough? 

I turn to nature. I love camping and hiking or enjoying my backyard. 

I’m recharged by spending a few minutes outdoors. 

What’s your biggest job perk? 

Sampling all of the cheeses! Isn’t eating and trying everything 

the best part of any food job though? Also, there’s usually wine 

involved. 

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? 

I’m a big fan of supporting privately owned restaurants. Some of 

my local favorites are Primo Pizza, El Mariachi Taqueria, Mezcalito 

Oaxacan Cuisine, PK Sushi, and The Pour Choice. 

And finally, customer service is…? 

The most important element! Being a food-based business, 

customer interaction isn’t only key but also rewarding. It feels 

great to see and hear people enjoying something you created just 

for them; it doesn’t get any better. 

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? 

I started Dancing Zebra Safari Co.—an agency that plans boutique, 

luxury safaris in Tanzania and other parts of Eastern and Southern 

Africa—in 2016. A native Californian, I graduated from UC Santa 

Barbara and went straight to law school at the University of San 

Francisco. By the age of 26, I was a successful Nevada divorce 

attorney and running my own family law practice. Upon starting 

a family of my own, however, I paused my legal career and moved 

to Hawaii for my husband’s medical training. As our children 

grew, so did my perspective on life and career. Contemplating “life 

after children,” I boarded a plane for a wedding in Tanzania, not 

realizing the answer I sought would greet me on the other side. 

In discovering Serengeti National Park, I found my passion. With 

a lifelong affinity for animals and a thirst for exploration, I was 

deeply inspired and knew I’d spend the next season of life helping 

others experience the same indescribable magic. I spent the next 

two years researching wildlife safaris in Tanzania, hosting safari 

guides at my home in California, and preparing for what is now 

Dancing Zebra Safari Co. Today, I use the same attention to detail 

and business savvy used as an attorney, but instead of taking 

clients to trial, I take them to Tanzania. 

How are you involved with the community? 

My whole family volunteers at the SPCA. 

What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? 

Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar. They have unique dishes and are 

dog-friendly! 

Where do you and your family go locally to have fun? 

Miner’s Ravine Trail, Massage Envy, Beat the Room, and Studio 

Movie Grill. 

What’s your favorite childhood memory? 

Jumping off the deck into 10 ten feet of snow at my family's 

mountain house between Reno and Lake Tahoe.
