Lake Forest Oktoberfest welcomes large crowds for fundraising event
Alyssa Groh, Editor
While this year marked
the third annual Lake Forest
Oktoberfest celebration,
it felt a bit like its
inaugural event. The past
two years the event had a
low turnout due to unfortunate
rainy weather. Third
time is the charm as this
year’s event had beautiful
fall weather.
The warm weather and a
turnout of more than 3,000
community members was
superintendent of recreation
Joe Mobile’s favorite
part of the event Saturday,
Sept. 22 in the parking lot
behind Lake Forest City
Hall.
“My favorite part about
the event was bringing the
community together on a
beautiful fall evening and
providing a quality family
event,” Mobile said.
“Since the first two years
were affected by rain, we
were excited to see the type
of response from the community
to the event. It was
great to see them embrace
the event and the new location
since the event was
moved downtown behind
City Hall this year.”
The purpose of the Oktoberfest
event is to add
an additional fundraiser
in the fall for the Friends
of Lake Forest Parks and
Recreation Foundation to
raise funds to support the
Parks and Recreation Department.
Oktoberfest is
the third of five fundraisers
put on by the Friends
of Lake Forest Parks and
Recreation Foundation.
The event brought family-friendly
entertainment
for all ages.
For children there was a
bouncy house in the form
of a large jack O’ lantern,
a variety of fun carnival
games and more.
The event also consisted
of music by DT Funk and
the Polkaholics. There were
a variety of food vendors, a
Homecoming pep rally supports athletic program, spreads school spirit
Alyssa Groh, Editor
Lake Forest High School
celebrated its homecoming
week Sept. 17-21.
The week was all about
spreading school spirit and
supporting the all sports at
the school.
For student body president
JD O’Keane, raising
the school spirit is what its
all about.
“My favorite part
about homecoming week
would be the energy at the
school,” O’Keane said. “It
is the height of school spirit
during the year and our
Scout pride can be seen
for miles. The pep rally on
Friday is the culmination
of all our spirit and it’s
truly amazing to see.”
Throughout the week
students dressed up to different
themes each day,
and ended the week with
the pep rally on Friday.
On Monday students
sported their favorite pajamas,
Tuesday was jersey
day, Wednesday was decades
day, Thursday was
class distinction day and
on Friday was a Scout out.
During the pep rally on
Friday, the Scout energy
level was at its highest.
Students and teachers
competed in a variety of
games such as who can eat
Fruit by the Foot the fastest
and a name that tune
battle.
All athletic teams were
also recognized and the
dance/poms team and
cheerleaders came together
for a couple routines.
A few senior class students
performed a comical
dance and the football
team and cheerleaders
came together for a dance
of their own.
The Lake Forest High School dance team finished off
its performance by displaying an “L” and “F” to represent
Lake Forest during the pep rally Friday, Sept. 21.
Photos by Alyssa Groh/22nd Century Media
To finish off the pep assembly,
Scout Nation leaders,
a student organization
which helps spread school
spirit, lead the school in
chants.
O’Keane had one hope
that students took away
from homecoming week.
“As student body president,
my hope is that each
student, no matter how involved
they are, recognizes
that we all come from
different backgrounds
with different interests and
that we can come together
as one student body and
celebrate Lake Forest High
School,” he said.
Students race teachers to see which group can eat Fruit
by the Foots the fastest.
The cheerleaders created this formation at the end of
their performance to help raise the energy of the school
for the big game later that night.
Police Reports
Brothers arrested after cocaine, loaded guns found in car
Victor E. Sinde, 48 of
Zion, was charged with
possession of a controlled
substance and William
F. Sinde, 57, of Pleasant
Prairie, Wis., was charged
with speeding 80 mph in
a posted 55 mph speed
zone, aggravated DUI and
aggravated driving with a
revoked driver’s license at
7:42 p.m. Sept. 15 in the intersection
of Route 41 and
Westleigh Road in Lake
Forest.
An officer conducting
speed enforcement observed
a tan vehicle driving
at a high rate of speed. The
officer locked the vehicle
at 80 mph on radar and
conducted a traffic stop.
The officer approached the
vehicle and made contact
with the driver, identified
as William Sinde.
The officer noted a strong
odor of alcohol coming
from William Sinde and,
when asked for a driver’s
license, only a Wisconsin
ID card was produced.
Subsequent questioning
revealed William Sinde
and his brother Victor had
been at a Cubs game where
William had consumed 6-7
beers.
Officers removed both
subjects from the vehicle,
searched it, and Victor
Sinde was found to be in
possession of a controlled
substance which tested
positive for cocaine. A
loaded Taurus handgun
was located in the glove
box and a loaded magazine
was found in Victor’s
pocket. Several empty beer
cans were located in the
vehicle as well. William
Sinde was given field sobriety
test, which he did not
pass. William subsequently
submitted to a breath test
that resulted in a reading of
0.114 BAC.
Lake Forest:
Sept. 17:
• Jasmin S. Sisson, 26, of
Waukegan, was charged
with possession of cannabis,
driving with a revoked
driver’s license and operating
an uninsured motor vehicle
at 7:38 a.m. in the intersection
of Route 60 and
Waukegan Road. While on
routine patrol, Lake Forest
police officers conducted a
traffic stop on a Kia sedan
after learning the registered
owner’s driver’s license
was revoked. Officers
spoke with the driver, identified
as Sisson, and she
confirmed her license was
revoked and she was unable
to provide any proof of
vehicle insurance. A small
amount of cannabis was
also located in the vehicle.
Sept. 15:
• Luis A. Velez, 19, of
Round Lake, was charged
with possession of a controlled
substance, possession
of drug paraphernalia,
possession of cannabis and
minor possession of alcohol
at 1:53 a.m. in the intersection
of Route 41 and
Westleigh Road. Officers
on patrol received a 911
call concerning a red Buick
driving erratically. Officers
located the suspect vehicle
and after observing several
traffic violations conducted
a traffic stop. Officers made
contact with the driver,
identified as Velez, and immediately
smelled the odor
of cannabis coming from
inside the vehicle. Velez
produced a glass pipe and
small container of cannabis
from the center console as
well as a pill container that
held Xanax. Subsequent
search of the vehicle revealed
a 375 ml bottle of
liquor, more drug paraphernalia
and a silver flask containing
alcohol.
Sept. 13:
• Michael D. Karnicki,
49, of Highland Park, was
charged with possession of
cannabis and possession of
drug paraphernalia at 12:03
a.m. in the intersection of
Green Bay Road and Briar
Lane. An officer on patrol
observed a vehicle traveling
at 51 mph in a posted
35 mph speed zone. The
officer conducted a traffic
stop on the silver Nissan
and when he approached
the vehicle, he spoke to
the driver, identified as
Karnicki. The officer immediately
smelled the odor
of cannabis coming from
inside the car and, after
questioning the driver, a
cannabis pipe and a bag
containing cannabis were
located in the vehicle
Sept. 11:
• Veronica Castro-Melgar,
37, of Waukegan, was
charged with operating an
uninsured motor vehicle,
DUI of alcohol, expired
driver’s license, possession
of drug paraphernalia and
possession of a controlled
substance at 1:51 a.m. in
the intersection of Route
41 and Westleigh Road. An
officer on patrol observed
a green Land Rover SUV
commit a traffic violation.
The officer spoke to the
driver, identified as Castro-Melgar.
As the officer
was speaking to Castro-
Melgar, he noted a strong
odor of alcohol coming
from her breath and, after
inquiring about the smell,
Castro-Melgar admitted
to drinking earlier. The officer
noted Castro-Melgar
demonstrated other signs
of impairment during the
time they spoke. When
officers requested Castro-
Melgar exit the vehicle to
perform some roadside sobriety
testing, a glass pipe
commonly used to smoke
cannabis fell out on the
ground. Cocaine was also
found in her purse. Castro-
Melgar was transported to
the Public Safety Building,
processed, and subsequently
submitted to chemical
breath test that resulted in a
reading of 0.167 BAC.
with operating a vehicle
with suspended registration,
operating an uninsured
vehicle and speeding
in a school zone at 3:35
Sept. 10:
THE HIGHLAND PARK LANDMARK
Event gives ‘overdue’
thanks to Vietnam vets
With an eye toward the
contemporary discord, an
event hosted by Congressman
Brad Schneider Sept.
17, honored area veterans
of the Vietnam War for
their service and acknowledged
how a previously
divided nation kept many
at the time from receiving
their proper thanks.
Taking place at the Art
Center in Highland Park,
the event commemorated
Tenth District veterans
as a part of the national
Vietnam 50th Commemoration,
which was passed
by Congress and went
into effect Memorial Day,
2012 and will run until
2025 to honor those who
served in the conflict.
Over a dozen area veterans
were presented with
official Vietnam War 50th
Commemoration pins and
certificates.
Congressman Schneider
said the tensions fueled by
the national debate around
the war at the time meant
many veterans, including
those in the room Monday
night, received not only
inadequate but often hostile
treatment upon their
return home.
“One of the greatest
injustices of the Vietnam
era was the failure to acknowledge
people when
they came home and to
thank them for their service,”
he said. “This was
a mistake made by our
nation that we must never
ever make again. Today
we offer a long overdue
thank you.”
A look into history
History Center of Lake
Forest to reveal new home
David Forlow
Contributing Columnist
The Lake Forest-
Lake Bluff
Historical Society
was formed in 1972, by
more than 100 charter
members, to preserve the
history of Lake Forest
and Lake Bluff. For many
years our office was in
the Gorton Community
Center. In 1998 we
opened our first museum
at 361 E. Westminster
Road, a former coach
house. In 2014 we acquired
the former Church
of Christ Scientist at 509
East Deerpath Road.
We have been the keepers
of community stories
for more than 45 years.
Our organization grew
from a few filing cabinets
in a room in Gorton to
an essential community
resource. We are nearing
the completion of a $4
million capital campaign,
and the installation of
the museum’s permanent
exhibit at our campus at
509 E. Deerpath Road
will debut Oct. 7.
As the new History
Center of Lake Forest-
Lake Bluff, we are poised
to connect the community
with its past like
never before — using
21st century technology.
Our campus will give
the community a new
history museum, a rotating
exhibition gallery,
an education hall and a
research room. We will
truly become a center for
celebrating history.
Our new home — your
home for history—will be
a gathering place where
the community can come
together to celebrate who
we are and how we are
connected. Four computer
touchscreens will allow
visitors to choose their
own journey – searching
photos and information
by map, topic or name.
Our exhibit in the dynamic
Hunter Family Education
Hall will feature
hundreds of photos and
incorporate state-of-theart
technology that will
allow you to discover history
for yourself. Coming
soon will be an additional
feature whereby the community
can add their family
stories and photos to
our collection. We want
you to become the ”I” in
History.
We sincerely hope that
you will join us for the
moment that we’ve been
working toward—our
permanent exhibit Grand
Opening at 3 p.m. Oct.
7. Mark your calendars
and come be a part of this
notable moment in our
community’s history. This
free event is open to the
public, but an RSVP is
requested.
Letters to the Editor
Agreement with Rockland
Fire District to cost
taxpayers more
As eight of eight Lake
Forest alderman of Lake
Forest celebrate and tout
the 10 year $1.4 savings
resulting from the approval
of the intergovernmental
agreement between Lake
Forest and the Rockland
Fire Protection District,
Knollwood residents
weep. While Lake Forest
saves, Knollwood pays.
The savings to Lake Forest
and ultimately a similar
amount will be saved by
Libertyville and paid for
by Knollwood, is a result
of the closing of the Knollwood
volunteer fire department
and outsourcing fire
protection to both Lake
Forest and Libertyville.
Someone must pay for such
services and it will be the
residents of Knollwood.
In addition to the celebrated
savings, the retiring
Mayor of Lake Forest cites
the trends in intergovernmental
services and how
this landmark agreement
will “make even better our
services here in Lake Forest.”
Interesting there was
no mention of the outcome
for Knollwood in terms of
cost or service levels.
One of my favorite
things about Lake
Forest is the community’s
support for local
schools.
This past weekend was
Lake Forest High School’s
homecoming week.
Although the football
team fell short against Warren,
Lake Forest’s Scout
pride still stands strong.
Each year, I am always
As bad as this looks
for Knollwood, it is even
worse because the decision
was made by two of three
Lake County appointed
Trustees, not the residents
who will suffer the consequences.
If it is even
worse; among the choice
of three options, the two
trustees who approved the
plan chose the one that was
arguably the worst of the
lot. This is non democracy
at work; it was a decision
made by non-elected, nonaccountable
bureaucrats
and Knollwood loses!
How can this be you say?
Easy: Grant the two appointed
Rockland Trustees
the power to ignore the will
of the people as was the
case of the appointments
by a single person, Aaron
Lawlor, former President
of the Lake County Board
of Commissioners who recently
resigned, and is currently
facing accusations of
financial misbehavior and a
law enforcement investigation.
So we have three lame
ducks, Lawlor and the two
Rockland trustees, influencing
the fate of Knollwood’s
future fire protection
options.
Anticipating the possible
meddling in the affairs
of the Rockland Fire
amazed by the support the
community gives the high
school.
I had the privilege of attending
the pep rally at the
high school on Friday and
it was so much fun to see
the students excitement for
the big game.
But, what I loved the
most was the time the students
took to recognize all
teams, not just football.
District by the appointed
trustees, a referendum was
held in Knollwood to establish
home rule on the
matter and take it out of
the hands of the appointed
trustees. That referendum
passed by over 80 percent
of the voters signaling
overwhelming rejection of
the appointed trustee idea.
Unfortunately, the home
rule implementation could
not occur until the term
of the appointed trustees
expired in April of 2019,
only seven months from
the date of the Lake Forest
Agreement. Knowing the
80 percent + favorability
of elected Rockland Trustees,
two of the appointed
ones called for a trustee
vote to outsource to Lake
Forest and Libertyville.
What was the rush and
why defy public sentiment?
Money to help fund
the pension shortfalls in
Lake Forest and Libertyville,
that’s why. If there
was a delay in the decision
to outsource until April
2019, there was a risk the
elected trustees would
have decided that Rockland
stay as is, or merge
with Lake Bluff. Such options
were not tolerable to
the Lake Forest and Libertyville
plan.
Each and every team in
the school needs the support
of the community to
help keep their momentum
going. They work hard on
a weekly basis to perfect
their skills and compete at
a higher level each game.
I encourage everyone to
attend at least one game
for each sport this year. I
promise, it will mean a lot
to the students.
The idea that two appointed
individuals can
overrule the wishes and
sentiments of the vast majority
of the voters and bill
payers (property tax) is
odious, unseemly and undemocratic.
And, it is irreversible
once Rockland is
dismantled.
Citadel’s latest play has ties to modern themes
Erin Yarnall
Contributing Editor
Even though Lillian
Hellman wrote “Little
Foxes” in 1939, and the
play is set in the early 20th
century, the play, which
opens at Citadel Theatre
Friday, Sept. 28, has many
themes that echo throughout
modern times, according
to the cast.
Actors Saren Nofs Snyder
and Thomas Thomas
both see traits in their respective
characters that are
relevant to people today.
“He could easily be seen
as a villain, but he’s not,”
Thomas said of his character,
Ben. “He’s also not
really a very nice person,
and the combination of
those two things, a man
with a vision but not too
many morals, has echoes
in today’s world.”
Thomas said that not
only is his character written
with depth, but the entirety
of “Little Foxes” is
as well.
“Everybody in it is really
richly layered, and has
multiple aspects,” Thomas
said.
Snyder agreed that the
audience can relate to her
character, Regina, as well.
“My character is not unlike
any other woman born
either in this time period,
1900 in Alabama, or quite a
few women today,” Snyder
said. “She is a woman who
is incredibly intelligent,
just as shrewd of a business
person as her brothers are,
but given her gender she is
not given the opportunity
to fully express who she is,
so she is a woman who is
fighting to make a way in
the world for herself.”
Snyder was particularly
thrilled when she was cast
as Regina. She said it has
been her “bucket list role”
since she was a graduate
student, and performed in
“Another Part of the Forest,”
a prequel to “Little
Foxes” also written by
Hellman.
“When I was working
on that, I read ‘Little
Foxes’ and was hoping
I could work on Regina
when I became the appropriate
age,” Snyder said.
“We don’t really look at
plays from the standpoint
of what happens to the
women in them, especially
plays back in the ’30s and
’40s, so to get to be this
woman who takes control
and actually changes her
own destiny, I just love it
to pieces.”
In addition to starring
in the play, Snyder
is also teaching the play
to her class of seniors at
the Chicago Academy for
the Arts. Her senior class
is currently studying the
play, and is planning on attending
to see their teacher
perform the lead role.
Kristina McCloskey, the
director of “Little Foxes,”
said she was drawn to
working on the play because
of Hellman’s writing.
“Lillian Hellman doesn’t
write a lot of nonsense,”
McCloskey said. “There’s
just these really evocative,
beautiful lines that come
out from time to time that
I really think the audience
is going to take them with
them when they leave.”
“Little Foxes” marks
Thomas, Snyder and Mc-
Closkey’s first time working
at Citadel.
Thomas said he’s been
having “enormous fun”
working on the play.
“I have really enjoyed
the experience,” Thomas
said. “It’s a lovely space to
work in.”
“I’ve been really impressed
in terms of the
passion and the dedication,”
McCloskey said
of the Lake Forest-based
company.
Snyder also believes it’s
important to have an accessible
theater scene in
the suburbs, so residents
aren’t obligated to go to
Chicago each time they
want to see a performance.
“Theater really should be
for everyone,” Snyder said.
“It’s such a difference if you
live in one of those communities
to not always have to
plan almost an entire day to
get into the city. I just believe
so firmly in bringing
theater to everyone.”
22nd Century
Media editors
sample German
dishes in honor of
Oktoberfest
Staff Report
The true Oktoberfest
might be halfway across
the world, but some North
Shore area restaurants give
their best impressions of
the annual month-long celebration.
When many people
think of Oktoberfest, they
think of beer, sausage,
pretzels and a whole food
group that will warm you
up just in time for the falling
leaves and temperatures.
There have been different
adaptations of this
in the U.S., with heavier
beers and delicious foods
taking the forefront for
those celebrating.
Editors from all seven
North Shore newspapers
went out into area restaurants
to find the best
food to make you feel like
you’re back in Germany,
celebrating the start of another
fall season.
Butterkäse — Caputo
Cheese Market, Lake
Forest
Oktoberfest is among
us, and with Oktoberfest
comes beer and German
food. If you are looking
for options other than giant
soft pretzels, brats and
strudels, look no farther
than Caputo Cheese Market
in Lake Forest.
Caputo’s is home to a
variety of options, but if
you are looking for something
strictly German for
your Oktoberfest celebration
needs, check out its
German cheese offering.
Butterkäse cheese
($6.79 per pound) at Caputo’s
is a great appetizer
idea for Oktoberfest celebrations.
The German
cheese is creamy, semisoft
and sliceable and
tastes great alone or paired
with crackers.
The Butterkäse tastes a
bit like butter but is most
similar to sharp cheddar or
blue cheese. This cheese,
unlike many others, is
aged for a brief time, creating
a subtle flavor. This
cheese is paired best with
beer, which is great for
Oktoberfest.
Caputo Cheese Market,
231 E. Wisconsin
Ave., Lake Forest, is open
7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-
Friday and 7 a.m.-6 p.m.
Saturday and 7 a.m.-5 p.m.
Sunday. For more
Pork shank — Bluegrass,
Highland Park
For a few weeks every
fall, Bluegrass in Highland
Park offers diners a seasonal
Oktoberfest menu,
which highlights its take
on German staples.
According to owner
Jim Lederer, the “showstopper”
Oktoberfest menu
item is the restaurant’s
pork shank.
“You see it going
through a dining room and
everyone kind of looks
up,” Lederer said. “It’s a
beautiful presentation.”
The restaurant will cook
between six and eight pork
shanks a day, and serve
them until they sell out for
the day.
Bluegrass specially orders
cuts of shank, and
bakes it for three and a half
hours, before being finished
in a convection oven
— giving the dish a crispy
outside, similar to chicharrón,
according to Lederer.
Each serving of the pork
shank is between two and
three pounds of meat.
“Sometimes they sell out
in the first hour, sometimes
they don’t sell out until 7
p.m.,” Lederer said. “But
we sell out almost every
single night.”
Bluegrass started serving
the dish in 2007, when
they transitioned their Fall
Fest menu to an Oktoberfest
menu after their chef
took a trip to the Andechs
in Germany.
“He had [the pork shank]
there, and then brought
it back here to replicate,”
Lederer said. “His exuberance
was just over the top,
so we brought in schnitzel,
we brought in the sausages,
we’ve got some pretzel
bites, so we’ve shifted it to
just some kind of cool, fun
and different products that
are German in nature and
have some good flavor.”
Bluegrass is open 11
a.m.-2 p.m. and 5-9 p.m.
Tuesdays through Fridays,
5-9 p.m. Saturdays and 5-8
p.m. Sundays.
Viennese apple strudel
— Pavilion Restaurant,
Northbrook
Although the weather
hasn’t given much of an
indication of it, the fall
season is here. And with
that, few dishes around
Northbrook can provide
satisfying seasonal tastes
quite like the Pavilion Restaurant’s
Viennese apple
strudel.
The butterkäse German Cheese is available at Caputo Cheese Market for Oktoberfest
celebrations. ALYSSA GROH/22ND CENTURY MEDIA
The apple strudel ($8),
which is a take on a classic,
old-fashioned German
strudel, has freshly sliced
Granny Smith apples that
are cooked and mixed with
raisins in a homemade filling.
The filling is encased is
a tasty, flaky dough, served
warm and topped with a
scoop of vanilla ice cream.
“It’s one of our more
popular desserts and it
usually gets really good
feedback from guests,”
said Amy Muzur, Pavilion’s
manager.
When this editor got a
taste of the popular dessert,
it certainly didn’t
disappoint and it was easy
to see why it’s such a favorite.
Upon arrival at your
table, you’re greeted with
the dish’s fresh smell,
making it nearly impossible
to not dig in right away.
The dish is a tasteful
offering that makes for a
satisfying dessert on a cold
fall evening.
Pavilion Restaurant is
located at 577 Waukegan
Road, inside Brookside
Plaza. It’s open 11 a.m. to
9 p.m. Monday-Thursday,
11 a.m.-10 p.m. on Friday,
5-10 p.m. on Saturday
and is closed on Sundays.
Bratwurst — Irving’s For
Red Hot Lovers, Wilmette
For more than 40 years,
Irving’s For Red Hot Lovers
in Wilmette has been
the North Shore’s go-to
spot for items like hot
dogs, burgers, chicken and
Italian beef.
It would be a mistake,
however, to skip over bratwurst
on the restaurant’s
menu.
“It’s ordered on a regular
basis, but we also see
an increase in sales during
the fall,” said Andrew
Greensphan, owner of Irving’s.
“We have certain
customers that come in
just for the brat. We have
regulars that when they
walk in, you know they’re
going to order it.”
Bratwurst has long been
a staple of German cuisine.
The name is derived from
brat, or finely chopped
meat, and wurst, or sausage.
Bratwurst is made
from veal, beef or pork.
At Irving’s, the bratwurst
has a special ingredient —
Guinness beer.
With the bratwurst sandwich
($4.99) at Irving’s,
the meat is charcoalbroiled,
which gives it a
white color when cooked
because it’s not smoked.
The bratwurst is served on
a poppy-seeded hot dog
bun. The mustard choices
are honey mustard, yellow
mustard and dark mustard,
which Greensphan says is
the most popular with its
strong and sharp flavor.
Irving’s also can top your
bratwurst with grilled onions
or sauerkraut. The
sour taste of the sauerkraut
is a perfect complement to
the milky and roasted taste
of the Guinness.
After a busy summer
season, Irving’s has made
the transition into fall with
the restaurant being as
popular as ever, especially
before and after Loyola
Academy football games.
Irving’s For Red Hot
Lovers is open 10 a.m.-
9 p.m. Monday-Saturday
and 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday.
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Isabella Martino
Isabella Martino is a senior
at Lake Forest High
School and is on the girls
golf team.
How did you start
playing golf?
My entire family basically
plays golf. On vacations,
like when we go
some place warm, we’d
always have one day during
the week where we’d
go out and play golf. I kind
of liked it, so when we
came back home I’d start
playing with my parents
and we’d bring my sister
along. I just started enjoying
the game.
What has it been like
to have your sister on
the team this year?
I actually love it. We’re
really close. Last year she
was on field hockey and
I just really enjoy having
her on the team. Sometimes
we get competitive
because she shoots better
than me in some rounds
but I think we both enjoy
the game so that’s all that
matters.
What is your favorite
part about the sport?
I personally think it’s
not very competitive. I’m
not a very competitive person
so it’s kind of easier
for me. I just worry about
how I’m playing and not
how other people are playing.
I’m just competing
against myself in a way.
What is the most
challenging part of the
sport?
Probably just staying
content with myself and
not getting angry when I
have bad shots and just
controlling my emotions
while I’m on the course.
Is making state a goal
for you this year?
Yes, making state is definitely
my goal this year.
I almost made it last year
but I just didn’t make the
cut.
What makes you
happy?
I really like to play with
my dogs. I have two dogs,
one is Zoey and the other
is Luna. Their Samoyed
and they’re white and
fluffy. They’re just fun to
play with and pet.
If you could travel
anywhere in the
world, where would
you go?
I’d probably want to go
to Europe. My family is
Italian and I really want
to go to France and Paris
and I hear the food is great
over there.
What is your favorite
food to eat?
I really like pasta. I
like spaghetti with a vodka
sauce which is like a
creamy tomato sauce.
What is your favorite
movie?
Photo Submitted
I like “The Other Woman,”
and “Girls Trip.”
“Girls Trip,” just kind of
reminds me of me and my
sister, and her friend and
my friend. That’s going
to be us when we’re older.
We’re just all going to get
back together and have
fun.
What is the best part
about being an athlete
at Lake Forest?
I think I would have to
say that it’s just being in
an environment of a team.
I’ve made so many friends
through the golf team –
every year through every
grade.
line controlled the line of
scrimmage with six sacks
and made life tough for the
Scouts’ quarterback, who
handled himself as well as
he could.
“Tommy was under pressure
and getting knocked
around all game. But he
kept getting back up every
time. I was proud of how
he handled himself,” Spagnoli
said. “You have to give
their line credit. They’re
very talented. We put a lot
of pressure on their quarterback,
too. The difference is
he was able to play with a
game. They were up two
scores most of the time so
that helps when you’re in
that situation.”
Despite their offensive
struggles, the Scouts had
a chance to tie when Luke
Nolan’s interception gave
them possession with under
five minutes left to play.
But Lake Forest could only
get to its own 43. And after
turning it over on downs,
the second big play they
gave up sealed the game as
Martin Walker (30 carries,
156 yards) broke loose for
a 43-yard touchdown run
with two minutes remaining.
“Against good teams,
we need to be better at being
sound on every rep,”
Spagnoli said. “We didn’t
play poorly on every play.
But if you make big mistakes
like that, it’s going to
cost you. Every rep is important
against a team like
this. And you can’t give up
those type of plays.”
Despite the loss, the
Scouts hope they can take
some things away that will
make them better going forward.
“There’s always something
you can learn from
every game, win or lose,”
Scheidler said. “Besides
that last touchdown run,
we did a much better job
on containing their running
back in the second half. We
were able to make some
good adjustments on defense.
There’s things we can
look at and build off of.”
Boys Golf
Mental focus keeps Scouts on their game
David Jaffe
Freelance Reporter
It was a special day for
New Trier golfer Sam Weber
during the Trevians’
quad with host Highland
Park, Lake Forest and
Loyola Academy at Sunset
Valley Golf Course.
And it wasn’t only because
he carded a two-under
par 34 which tied him
for the lowest score of the
day.
Weber sunk a hole-inone
on the fourth hole giving
him a highlight he’ll
never forget.
“Right before me on that
hole, someone hit it into
the water,” Weber said. “I
knew it would be a tough
pin. So I tried to play it
safe. But I ultimately was
more aggressive than I
initially was planning on.
When I hit it, I thought
it was short. It was very
shocking and definitely a
good experience.”
Weber had a strong allaround
day besides the
hole-in-one and helped
launch the Trevians to a
win at the Highalnd Park
Quad meet Thursday, Sept.
20, in Highland Park, with
139 points.
Host Giants finished in
second, shooting a 147 and
the Scouts rounded out the
top three.
Lake Forest finished just
two strokes behind the Giants
with 149, led by Patrick
Moorhead’s even-par
36 as his consistency was
what led the way.
“I was able to stay even
the whole way through,”
Moorhead said. “I made
an eagle on hole seven and
then followed that up with
a birdie. The longer holes
today were downwind so
that helped. We were hoping
to do better as a team
Sunset Valley Golf Course. Brittany Kapa/22nd Century Media
today so we’ll be looking
to bounce back and get
right back at things.”
For Moorhead, there
wasn’t anything specific
physically that he needed
to adjust this season.
“It was all mental what
I needed to focus on,”
Moorhead said. “There
wasn’t anything physical I
needed to change. Once I
got through a certain mental
barrier, it helped a lot
and helped me play better.”
Danny Fisher had a 37
while Sam Davis and Flynn
Bradley carded 38’s.
When Highland Park’s
Jared Grossmann gets to a
certain point on his home
course of Sunset Valley,
things tend to go well for
him after that.
But they went well for
him all nine holes as he
carded a one-under par 35.
“Usually when I get past
the fifth hole, I get into the
zone,” Grossmann said.
“But today right from the
start, I played well and was
able to carry that over.”
Grossmann really enjoys
playing at Sunset Valley,
especially since the
course recently underwent
renovations.
“I have a lot of good
memories playing at this
course,” Grossmann said.
“I always want to play my
best here. It’s a fun course
and they did a really good
job with the renovations.
It’s a special place to play.”
The Giants were second
with 147 points and Grossmann
feels good about
what the team is capable
of.
“My freshman year, we
were eighth at state and last
year, we were fourth and
just missed a state trophy,”
Grossmann said. “We’re a
really deep team and a lot of
guys can put up low scores.
Hopefully the depth, chemistry
and togetherness of the
team will take us far over
the next few weeks.”
Jason Bernstein carded a
36 while Max Golding had
a 37 and Daniel Burack
shot a 39.
Loyola Academy finished
last in the quad, and
shot a 157 led by Jack
Crawshaw’s par 36.
“I hit the ball off the tee
well,” Crawshaw said. “I
had some bad putts that
prevented me from doing
better. Two or three threeputts
on the day. I didn’t go
up and down for birdies as
much as I should have.”
His focus the next few
weeks will be trying to
play his best while also
helping his team.
“I’m hitting the ball off
the tee box the way I want
to,” Crawshaw said. “I
think at this point, it’s just
about keeping my head
straight. Whatever I do, I
will want to help my team
as much as I can and I’ll
have to make sure I play
my game.”
Patrick Adler had a 39
while Peter Radler and
Ryan Savarie had 41’s.
Scout hockey brings holiday cheer to community again
Brittany Kapa, Sports Editor
For more than 30 years,
the Lake Forest Scouts
boys hockey has brought
Christmas cheer to area
residents.
The longstanding tradition
will continue this season
sooner than residents
might have realized.
The Lake Forest High
School Scout Hockey Tree
and Greenery Sale begins
Monday, Oct. 1, both online
and in person. The
sale gives players the opportunity
the not only get
in the holiday spirit, but
also allows them to help a
local organization.
A portion of the proceeds
from the sales will
go to the Great Lakes
Adaptive Sports Association
to help with needs or
potential equipment cost.
The other portion goes directly
to the player to help
with season costs, which
are inflated since hockey
is a club sport and not recognized
by the IHSA.
“They earn a percentage
toward reducing [their]
fees [for the season],”
said Colleen Nicholas, the
Scouts Hockey tree sale
organizer whose son Ethan
Nicholas is on the team.
“Some will work harder
than others on that, but
then there are others that
just really enjoy the team
building part of working
as a team to deliver and set
up many of these bigger
trees in people’s homes.”
Nicholas isn’t sure exactly
how much will be
donated to GLASA just
yet, but added the team
often applies the donation
to a specific need that
GLASA has. The donation
to GLASA will be made
at a home game to be announced
at a later date.
Players from the Scouts’
hockey team are required
to not only volunteer their
time but to try and sell as
many trees as they can
through pre-order sales.
When the trees finally
arrive from Virgina the
players also help unload
the trees from the truck,
deliver them to resident’s
homes and spend time
working at the tree lot located
on Deer Path Middle
School’s tennis courts.
The lot opens the day after
Thanksgiving for five
days of sales spread out
over two weekends.
The community has really
responded, too, and
Nicholas estimates that
they have roughly 800
customers over the course
of the season.
“There is always almost
a special case where there
is someone in the family
who is hurt or sick
and they just can’t get it
together,” Nicholas said.
“They don’t have the man
power to get their tree in
and it’s a tradition that
I think families want to
keep going.”
Nicholas added that the
tree sales do a good job of
getting all the players in
the Christmas spirit, and
often find the joy in helping
others.
“They really get in the
spirit when they see the
trees coming off the truck,”
she said. “They unload a
semi-truck trailer full of
trees. That is a huge task.”
A few years ago, as
Nicholas recounts, the
trees arrived in a snow
storm. But instead of
dreading the experience
the players turned it into
one they remembered.
“They put Santa hats on,
someone played Christmas
music and we just
had a good time with it,”
Nicholas said of the fond
memory.
Orders can be placed
Late Scout rally not enough for homecoming win
David Jaffe
Freelance Reporter
When a team faces a
quality opponent, it can
often come down to one
or two key plays which decides
who ends up on top.
Sometimes those plays
happen early in a game and
a team has to fight back to
have a chance to win.
Other times they come
late and are backbreakers.
Unfortunately for Lake
Forest, during its homecoming
game against Warren,
the Scouts gave up big
plays early and late that
ultimately ended up being
the difference on the scoreboard.
Sept. 21 and one of the
big plays they gave up put
them in a big early hole.
Warren scored on its
opening possession on a
13-play drive that took almost
seven minutes off the
clock because all 13 plays
were runs. It was capped
off by Malachi McNeal’s
five-yard touchdown run
and gave Warren the lead
with 3:30 left in the first
quarter.
But the first big play the
Scouts let up made things
very difficult the rest of the
way. Warren called timeout
with just four seconds left
in the quarter and ended
up capitalizing. Quarterback
Phil Hird connected
with Juan Dela Cruz for a
65-yard touchdown pass to
end the quarter extending
Warren’s lead to 14-0.
“We gave up two very
big plays and that ended up
being the difference in the
game,” Lake Forest coach
Chuck Spagnoli said. “It’s
really not more complex
than that. The first drive we
let up that one’s on me. But
you can’t make mistakes
like that against a good
team. They make you pay
for it. Credit to them for
doing so.”
The Scouts’ defense
played much better after
the first quarter holding
Warren in check most of
the rest of the way and forcing
two turnovers as well.
“The two big plays we
gave up were big chunk
plays,” Lake Forest’s Eddie
Scheidler said. “After
the first quarter, though,
we cleaned things up. We
got them off the field on
third down and had a better
showing most of the game.”
Lake Forest responded
quickly. On a trick play,
Ryan Cekay took a pitch
on a reverse from Jacob
Thomas and for the second
straight game, threw a
touchdown of more than 70
yards, this one a 71-yarder
to quarterback Tommy
Hanson cutting the deficit
to 14-7 less than two minutes
into the second quarter.
Warren increased the advantage
on a 23-yard field
goal by Adam Saul after
season, his second over 70 yards this season on a
trick play.
2. Tommy Hanson, QB – 13-of-26 for 122 yards
Hanson caught the Warren defense off guard going 71
yards for a touchdown on Cekay’s pass.
3. Luke Nolan, DB – Interception
Nolan’s pick gave the Scouts the ball with under five
minutes remaining and gave them
the chance to try and tie the game.
In the third quarter,
Carter Hiam kicked a 22-
Major changes hit the
North Shore’s largest
youth soccer club over the
summer. Glenview-based
FC United Premier has
replaced at least five program
directors, including
10-year Executive Director
Roy Wiggemansen.
The club’s new leader,
Sporting Director Baer
Fisher, confirmed the
changes but declined to
comment on them.
The message was sent
after Snower was fired
from Loyola Academy,
for which he coached varsity
girls soccer.
Snower was investigated
by the school and the
Wilmette Police Department
after more than 10 of
his players alleged that he
made inappropriate sexual
comments to and about
players and engaged in
other misconduct.
No criminal charges
were filed, but Snower
was immediately dismissed
by Loyola.
Also over the summer,
FC United parted
ways with Seong Ha, who
coached multiple teams
for the soccer club, after
his resignation from
Glenbrook South amid
separate allegations.
An investigation by
The Lantern discovered
parents alleged to GBS
administration that Ha
bullied his players in a variety
of ways.
Ha has not returned
multiple requests for comment.
Wiggemansen departed
over the summer and is
now a coach at Wisconsin’s
AFC Union Soccer
Club after serving as the
club’s executive director
for over a decade and
helped make FC United
one of the most successful
soccer clubs in the state of
Illinois and the nation.
Attempts to reach
Wiggemansen were unsuccessful,
and AFC
Union did not respond to
requests for comment.
FC United’s email in
the wake of the Snower
allegations said the organization
would conduct a
“thorough internal review
of this situation, including
a review of our training,
policies and procedure.”
The email also claims
the organization updated
its reporting procedures to
ensure player safety and
confidentiality.
