As we depart today, we take time to view the Falls of the Big Sioux River in Sioux Falls. The Falls of the Big Sioux River have been a focus of life in the region throughout history. Native American people were the first to visit the falls and bring stories of them to European explorers. They have been the center of recreation and industry since the founding of the city in 1856. Our journey today includes Iron Mountain Road and the famous “Pig Tale” bridges; Needles Highway (squeeze through the rocks!); Mount Rushmore with free time to view our nation’s most beloved mountain sculpture; Crazy Horse Memorial; Fort Hayes Chuckwagon for breakfast and Chuckwagon supper show. DAY 3 | Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup/ Independence Hall (B, D) We are up early this morning to enter Custer State Park for the 49th annual Buffalo Roundup. The motor coach will park on the hillside and we will venture out to watch the sunrise and wait for the buffalo. Please bring a lawn chair and/or blanket plus warm clothes including hat, gloves & scarf. Before the sun rises, you may purchase a cup of coffee or a pancake breakfast to be enjoyed out on the range. As the sun comes up over the hill, you warm up and begin to watch and wait. It’s not long and you may hear a distant thunder or catch a glimpse on the horizon of a dark shadow. Then, local cowboys & cowgirls do their best to drive the park’s herd into the buffalo corrals, passing by your viewing area. American history meets amazing art in DAY 4 | Homestake Open Pit Mine Tour/Deadwood Tour/Tatanka/Saloon #10 (B, D) Homestake Open Pit Mine is still a work in progress. Learn about the gold mining history and the scientific experimentation history and ongoing study even today. We learn about the “Story of the Bison” at Tatanka. Our guide will teach us about the Lakota way of life and will take us to the refurbished Tatanka sculpture depicting a buffalo jump commonly used by the Plains Native Americans to harvest large numbers of buffalo. We then travel to Deadwood for the “original Deadwood” tour with a step-on guide. Hear the tales of yesteryear in Deadwood. Travel up to Mt. Mariah, the infamous Deadwood cemetery, where many notable western personalities are buried. Dinner tonight at Saloon #10 – famous for where Wild Bill Hickok met his demise. Overnight Bryce Canyon, UT Day 4 | Zion National Park/Glen Canyon Dam (B) The incredible scenery continues during a Zion National Park tram ride. Then it’s on to the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area to catch a glimpse of the Glen Canyon Dam, one of the highest dams in the United States. Overnight Page, AZ Day 5 | Lake Powell Cruise/Grand Canyon National Park (B, L) A cruise on Lake Powell will delight all as you travel into scenic Antelope Canyon with its dramatic, steep red sandstone walls. Off to the magnificent Grand Canyon, where you will enjoy one of nature’s greatest works of art. You are given free time to explore the Grand Canyon area. Overnight near Grand Canyon, AZ Day 6 | Monument Valley/Navajo Cookout (B, L) On your way to Colorado today, we travel through the Navajo and the Ute Indian Reservations to Monument Valley for a close-up view in an open air jeep with a knowledgeable local guide learning about the famous monoliths rising from the earth. Enjoy a Navajo cookout! Overnight Cortez, CO Day 7 | Durango & Silverton Train/Million Dollar Highway (B, D) Behold the spectacular mountain scenery of the San Juan National Forest between Durango and Silverton aboard the Durango & Silverton train. The Million Dollar Highway takes us to the “Switzerland of America,” Ouray, CO. Overnight Montrose, CO Day 8 | Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument/Royal Gorge Bridge (B, LD) More wondrous scenery unfolds at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument. From the Royal Gorge Bridge, gaze at the river meandering through the canyon far below.
