KISS GUSTAV by Lisa Powers
Lisa Powers summarises
her upcoming photographic
art exhibition as a “veritable
Gold Rush”, referring to the
extravagant use of gold in the
paintings of Gustav Klimt which
inspired her new works.
“KISS GUSTAV is my homage
to Klimt and the Vienna
Secessionists of 1893 -1903 who
broke from traditional painting
and paved the way for modern
art,” she explains.
Powers uses Klimt as her
jumping off point, translating
his paintings into photographic
art, while remaining true and
recognisably Klimt. She directs
her models more as a film
director than a photographer,
suggesting scenes and emotions
for them to interpret. The
resulting images are ethereal,
enigmatic, a bit surrealistic and
always engaging.
Her chosen technique is shooting
with film then she adds textures
and layers.
Lisa is French-born but raised
in New York. She worked as
a commercial photographer
for nearly thirty years, winning
several prestigious awards
throughout her career.
In 2005, she relocated to New
Zealand where she currently
lives, and works primarily in Fine
Arts. “KISS GUSTAV” is her fourth
exhibition in New Zealand.
