RRP World Diabetes Day Tuesday, 14 November Diabetes is the largest and fastest growing chronic condition in New Zealand. 1 Over 240,000 people have been diagnosed with diabetes in New Zealand and it is thought there are another 100,000 people with diabetes who are unaware they have the disease. 1 These figures along with this year’s World Diabetes Day focus on women provide a timely reminder for healthcare professionals to come together and ensure all patients especially women at risk of diabetes or living with diabetes have access to the necessary medicines and technologies, education and information to improve their outcomes in treatment. Proper injection technique is an often-forgotten part of the overall care for people needing to inject their diabetes medication. The 5 Golden Rules of injection technique for people with diabetes Findings from a worldwide survey on injection technique reveal that a vast majority of people reliant on injectable diabetes medication are not injecting their medication correctly. 1 The survey was conducted among 13,289 self-injecting people participating from 42 countries. 1 The results were reviewed and analysed by over 180 diabetes experts from 54 countries, resulting in the ‘Golden Rules of Injection Technique’ being published. These Golden Rules have been developed to help people better manage their diabetes, in consultation with their healthcare professional. 1 This Diabetes Awareness Month, BD - a global medical technology company that is advancing the world of health by improving medical discovery, diagnostics and the delivery of care - is highlighting correct injection technique is just as $39 90 critical in diabetes care as a person’s diabetes medication, nutrition and physical activity.
