WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT
PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS IN MALAYSIA?
Get to know the best type of preschool program for your kids by comparing three different types of
preschool programs - Montessori, Reggio Emilia and Waldorf
Your little one is going to be four soon, and the time has come for
you to survey your housing area to look for a suitable kindergarten.
Besides checking whether the kindergarten you are eyeing has
enough qualified staff and is well-managed, clean, spacious and
within your budget, you would also want to find out what teaching
methods are being used.
After visiting a number of kindergartens, you would notice that
they basically fall into three categories. The first category uses the
traditional approach to teaching, which places less emphasis on the
value of play in learning. This traditional approach aims mainly to
prepare the children for primary school by teaching them the basic
academic skills – reading, writing and arithmetic.
Kiddy123 VOL 01
3

Education
The second category would be the kindergartens that believe
that children are active participants in their own education and
development; that each child has his/her own individual strengths
and therefore learns in different ways. These kindergartens
therefore use mainly play and individual or group activities/projects
to let the children observe and explore their own environment at
their own pace.
The third category would be those kindergartens that are
somewhere in between – teaching the 3Rs as well as using the
element of play.
Which Teaching Method Is Good For My Child?
The debate as to which teaching method is better has gone on
for a long time - not only in Malaysia, but in almost every country
where children are given the opportunity to receive education. A
researcher on kindergartens in Taiwan has an apt way of putting it:
he calls the first category “The Efficient Learning School” and the
second category “The Exploratory Learning School”.
To help you decide for your 4-year old, this first part of our article
provides some backgrounder on three well-known early childhood
learning methodologies -Montessori, Reggio Emilia and Waldorf -
the three names you will probably hear from the principals of the
kindergartens that use play in their teaching methods. The three
approaches share the same view of children as active participants
in their own development, and we hope this little backgrounder
will help you understand their philosophies, which have influenced
early childhood education the past 100 years until today.
The second part of our article will cover the other methods, systems
and programmes being used in kindergartens in Malaysia.
Montessori
The Montessori Method, which is probably the most well-known
in Malaysia among the three methodologies, was developed in the
early 1900s by an Italian physician, Dr Maria Montessori - initially
to help children with special needs and later introduced in her
first classroom, the Casa dei Bambini (or Children’s House), for
the disadvantaged children of San Lorenzo outside Rome. From
her research work with these children, Dr Montessori believed
that children are born with a unique potential and are inherently
independent learners. The Montessori Method therefore respects
each child’s individual differences and creates environments which
foster the fulfillment of each child’s highest potential.
At the preschool level, Montessori emphasises learning through
all five senses, not just through listening, watching, or reading.
Children in Montessori’s mixed age classes (usually ages 3 to 6
years old) are given uninterrupted blocks of work time to learn at
their own pace and according to their own choice of activities from
hundreds of possibilities. They are not required to sit and listen to
a teacher talk to them as a group, but are engaged in individual
or group activities of their own, with specially designed materials
that have been introduced to them individually by the teacher who
knows what each child is ready to do.
In Malaysia, many kindergartens are known as Montessori centres.
However, some may not include all the traditionally prescribed
elements. The word “Montessori” is not legally protected and
can be used by anyone, as such you will have to check what
the kindergarten offers if you want your child to have a “full
Montessori” experience. You can go to the following links to learn
Education
Reggio Emelia
The Reggio Emilia approach, which also originated in Italy, arose
out of the need to reconstruct society after the devastation of
World War II. Under the leadership of a teacher, Loris Malaguzzi,
teachers and parents from the villages around Reggio Emilia in
northern Italy, worked together to build a system for infant-toddler
and preschool education - in fact, the first school was built with
proceeds from the sale of a tank, some trucks and a few horses left
behind by the retreating German soldiers.
Until today, the Reggio Emilia philosophy views parents as partners
and collaborators together with the teachers in their children’s
education. Education has to focus on each child, not considered in
isolation, but seen in relation with the family, with other children,
with the teachers, with the environment of the school, with the
community, and with the wider society.
The Reggio approach sees children as being full of potential and
capable of building their own theories. Children are viewed as
citizens having rights to develop themselves and to have some
control over the direction of their learning. As such, much of the
instruction at Reggio Emilia schools takes place in the form of
projects where the children have opportunities to explore, observe,
hypothesise, question, and discuss to clarify their understanding –
as if they are apprentices rather than students.
Although not as well known in Malaysia as Montessori, there are a
number of kindergartens that practise the Reggio Emilia approach
in combination with other methods and programmes.
The following will provide you with more information about
Reggio Emilia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reggio_Emilia_approach
http://reggioalliance.org/
Waldorf
Waldorf education is based on the educational philosophy of
Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian thinker and educator. His first school,
where his thoughts on education were put into practice, was for
the children of the employees of the Waldorf Astoria cigarette
factory in Stuttgart, Germany after the First World War. Hence, the
name Waldorf.
Germany at that time was a defeated nation facing economic,
social and political chaos. As such, it is not surprising that Steiner’s
main goal for education was to develop morally responsible and
integrated individuals with a high degree of social competence –
perhaps, people who will not start another world war!
His philosophy on early childhood education focuses on practical,
hands-on activities and creative play. A Waldorf teacher creates a
warm, beautiful and loving home-like environment for the child,
one which is protective and secure and where things happen in a
predictable, regular manner.
The teacher works with the developing child in two basic ways.
Firstly, the teacher engages in domestic, practical and artistic
activities that the children can readily imitate (for example, baking,
painting, gardening and handicraft), adapting the work to the
changing seasons and festivals of the year.
Secondly, the teacher nurtures the children’s power of
imagination, according to the age, by telling carefully selected
stories and by encouraging free play in which the children act out
scenarios of their own creation, helping them to experience many
aspects of life more deeply. When toys are used, they are made
of natural materials, e.g., pine cones, wood, cotton, silk, shells,
stones and other objects from nature that the children themselves
have collected and are used in play and to beautify their
classroom – unlike the Montessori method which uses specially
designed materials.
Waldorf education is not as widely available in Malaysia as
Montessori. It is also not as often-used as Montessori or Reggio
Emilia in kindergartens that use a combination of methods –
perhaps because the Waldorf method does not recommend
introducing academic learning to the child until much later,
sometimes only at the age of 7.
For more information about Waldorf education, you can visit:
http://www.whywaldorfworks.org/
What’s Your Pick?
You may ask: “How can these methodologies developed a century
ago have any relevance to my child today?” It is true that the world
has changed since then. However, their view of the child remains
relevant to us today - that each child is special in his/her own way
and needs a nurturing and caring environment to help him/her
develop his/her potential and ultimately take his/her position in the
family, community and workplace.
Research indicates that these formative years are critical in a child’s
cognitive, social, emotional and physical development. As such, the
time and effort you put into looking for a suitable kindergarten for
your child would be well-spent if the place you finally select can
provide the best learning experience for your little one.
Education
AN INSIGHT OF PRESCHOOL TEACHING
AND LEARNING APPROACHES
Which teaching methods used is the most effective in preschool education?
in a central theme that allows for real life situations and creative
exploration. For example, the theme of transportation can help
your child explore concepts such as motion (cars, trains), buoyancy
(boats, ships), safety (safety belts in cars) and take part in activities
such as craftwork (sticking on words and pictures of cars on a
“road” drawn on the whiteboard) and drawing (guided drawing
around cardboard cut-outs of a car).
In Malaysia, all kindergartens, except preschools operating
under international schools, are required to follow the National
Preschool Curriculum (NPC) implemented in 2003 by the Ministry
of Education, which, the report states, “promotes the holistic
intellectual, languages, social, art and creativity, psychomotor,
cognitive and spiritual development of the children”.
The NPC lists four approaches of preschool teaching and learning:
learning through play, thematic approach, integrated approach,
and information technology and communication. However, these
approaches are broad and kindergartens have the flexibility to use
any teaching methods they wish as long as they fulfil the guidelines
of the NPC, among which are: the Malay language to be taught at
least two hours a week in preschools not using Malay as the main
language, and at least two hours a week of Islamic education for
Muslim children and moral education for non-Muslim children.
Teaching methods used by a kindergarten usually depend on how
the kindergarten operates. Kindergartens in Malaysia can be standalone
using their own teaching methods; franchisees that follow
the methods used by the franchisor; or kindergartens that purchase
ready-made systems, which come together with the syllabus,
workbooks and lesson plans. Here are some names you may hear
during your site visits to find a suitable kindergarten for your child.
Thematic Approach – an integrated approach
to learning
The thematic approach, which the NPC mentions, is a way of
teaching and learning whereby many areas of the curriculum
are connected together and integrated within a theme. It allows
learning to be more natural as it guides connected ideas to follow
on easily, and is a favourite with teachers as well as children.
The theme can be transportation for the next few days or until the
teacher feels that the children can move on, then pets or plants,
etc. The beauty of the thematic approach is that cognitive skills
such as reading, thinking, memorising and writing are put together
The way the thematic approach works in creating connections is
believed to be the best way for a child to learn. Learning is also
more effective and efficient when the subject taught is directly
associated to real life examples. All these are supported by research
on how the brain works and how human beings learn. Ultimately,
the use of this approach may help your child achieve higher levels
of learning.
Multiple Intelligences – 8 different potential
pathways to learning
Some kindergartens in Malaysia have adopted the theory of Multi
Intelligences, which was developed about 30 years ago by Dr
Howard Gardner, a professor of education at Harvard University.
Dr Gardner suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence
based on I.Q. testing and examinations is far too limited and has
proposed six other types of intelligence in addition to the linguistic
(verbal) and logical-mathematical (reasoning, numbers) intelligences
that schools have traditionally focused on. The six types are:
• Spatial (i.e. picture smart)
• Bodily-kinesthetic (i.e. body smart)
• Musical (i.e. music smart)
• Interpersonal (i.e. people smart)
• Intrapersonal (i.e. self smart)
• Naturalist (i.e. nature smart)
This theory may explain why children who show potential in these
other intelligences may not have received much recognition in
school and may even end up being labeled as under-achievers
or, worse, as having attention deficit disorder - just because their
unique way of learning is not addressed in the classroom. It could
also mean that when our child is slow in learning, he/she may not
be learning in the way that best suits him/her.
Today, more and more educators are adopting the theory of
Multiple Intelligences and have found that it actually provides
eight different potential pathways to learning. If a child is having
difficulty learning in the more traditional linguistic or logicalmathematical
ways of teaching, the theory suggests that there
several other ways in which the material might be presented to
facilitate effective learning.
6 Kiddy123 VOL 01

Education
Kindergartens that recognise this concept will use several ways
to address the different intelligences. They may use, for example,
word games, rhyme recitation, storytelling, numbers, pictures,
music, role play, inner reflection, a physical experience, a social
experience, or/and an experience in the natural world, so that each
child has the opportunity to learn in ways harmonious with their
unique minds.
For more information on this theory, go to:
Accelerated Learning Method – a preferred
learning style
There are also kindergartens that use the Accelerated Learning
Method, the techniques of which were first propounded by Colin
Rose in his landmark book Accelerated Learning in 1983. Rose
had incorporated the work of Dr Howard Gardner on Multiple
Intelligences and that of more than 100 other educational
researchers to develop his techniques – which, incidentally, have
also been incorporated into the human resource training of many
Fortune 500 companies.
The method is based on the concept that each child has a preferred
learning style - a way of learning that suits him/her best. Some
children are more visual, others more auditory, and others are more
physical (more ‘hands-on’) and when the way the child is taught
closely matches the way he/she likes to learn, the time taken to
learn is reduced - hence the name Accelerated Learning.
The kindergartens that have introduced the Accelerated Learning
Method in their teaching syllabus say that it also helps children
develop the full range of their intelligences when they are
provided a variety of learning activities which encompass all of the
intelligences.
The Victoria Readers – a reading system based
on the phonetic system
If you want to make sure that your child learns to read in
kindergarten, you have to check whether the kindergarten
focuses only on pre-reading skills or emphasises on actually
teaching the child to read. A number of kindergartens which take
the stand that reading must be taught explicitly and systematically
use The Victoria Readers programme, a systematic reading system
based on the phonetic system, which is supposed to teach a child
to read and spell in the shortest time possible. The system was
developed by Victoria Wong, an English language teacher, about
20 years ago.
At Level 1, the child learns to read three letter words with a vowel
in the medial position and simple sentence structures. At Level
2, the child learns to combine a vowel with consonant blends
(“voiced” combinations of two consonants, e.g. fl, bl, sl) and
simple sentence structures. At Level 3, the child learns to read
diagraph (“voiceless” combinations of two consonants, e.g. ch, th,
wh), new sentence structures and simple comprehension passages.
At Level 4, the child learns to read diphthongs (a sound made by
combining two vowels), and new sentence structures. The child
then reads short stories to expand his vocabulary.
Orff-Schulwerk Approach - integration of music,
movement, speech and drama
There are kindergartens that offer the Orff-Schulwerk Kids
programme as part of their syllabus. The Orff-Schulwerk approach
was developed to build musicianship in every child through the
integration of music, movement, speech, and drama. If you wish
to stimulate the potential musical abilities of your ready-forkindergarten
child, this is actually the best time to do so as a child’s
sense of hearing is said to develop most rapidly between the ages
of 3 to 8 and creativity between the ages of 0 to 5.
As children’s fine motor skills are not yet well-developed,
Orff-Schulwerk has designed a special group of teaching aids and
instruments such as xylophone and metallaphone, which suit a
child’s capabilities. Children can improvise freely and explore their
creativity without being restricted by their physical development.
Lessons are presented with an element of play, helping children
to learn at their own level of understanding. After that imitation,
experimentation, and personal expression will occur naturally
as they become confident, life-long musicians. It is only much
later that technique and theory come in. Outside of music,
the Orff-Schulwerk programme has been shown to improve
perceptual functioning, concept formation, concentration, motor
skills, and performance in other academic areas such as reading
and mathematics.
Choose The Best For Your Child
It is hoped that the above information has helped you to see
how early childhood education has developed over the years in
Malaysia. Its scope has vastly expanded and so has its potential for
making a difference in the life of your child. Whatever kindergarten
you ultimately decide upon, at least it will be a decision based on
an understanding of teaching methods used and a parent's unique
intuition as to what is best for your child.
Education
TADIKA VS. TASKA – DO YOU KNOW
THE DIFFERENCE?
Are tadika and taska synonyms or are there any differences between them?
“child care centre” etc., and become confused by the many
terms used almost interchangeably. Here, we attempt to shed
some light on the different terms used to clear the confusion to
the best of our knowledge.
Generally, early childhood education refers to education for
young children at the age of 6 years or younger, but is not part of
the formal education system. There are mainly two types of early
childhood education: taska and tadika; taska caters for children
from birth to 4 years of age while tadika enrols children between
4 to 6 years of age. The purpose of these institutions is to prepare
the young children with some basic skills and knowledge before
being enrolled into schools with formal education.
Early childhood education is now more popular than ever, with
parents sending their child to nurseries as early as 12 months
old. Every year before a new academic year begins, parents
would be bustling around searching for a preschool or nursery
for their child. Some parents would research for information on
the internet, some would rely on word of mouth to find out the
best available preschool or nursery around town. However, many
may come across terms such as “tadika”, “taska”, “nursery”,
Tadika
This is the most common term that every parent would know.
“Tadika” comes from the abbreviation for Taman Didikan Kanakkanak
in Malay language (taman= garden, didikan=upbringing
and kanak-kanak=children), which translates to kindergarten or
preschool in English.
Taska
“Taska” is the abbreviation for Taman Asuhan Kanak-kanak
(“asuhan”=care), which is child care centre or nursery.
The following table shows a comparison between the two
different categories:
Education
Taska, Nursery or Child Care Centres
In Malaysia, a legislative-approved child care centre is defined as a
premise at which four or more children under the age of 4 years
from more than one household are received to be looked after for
reward. It is a requirement for child care centres to be registered
with the Department of Social Welfare, or more commonly
known as Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat Malaysia (JKM), under
the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development
(MWFCD).
MWFCD is responsible for the approval and establishment of child
care centres in Malaysia whilst JKM serves as the main regulator
and coordinator of early childhood care and education (ECCE)
programmes. 2 However, there is no specific curriculum guideline
for child care providers of this category. Therefore it is really
important to do some basic research before choosing a child care
centre for your child.
Day Care Centres
It is interesting to note that there is also another category
known as daycare centre. It is like a child care centre, but
most daycare centres do not take in young infant and may not
provide learning programmes to the children. Daycare centres
cater for children of parents with full-time jobs, mainly providing
a place to care for children from two to six years old, before
or after school hours. Generally, they are open from 8am (or
earlier) to 6pm, and some will stay open for longer than that.
Some daycare centres also accept children of primary education,
between 6 to 12 years of age.
There is an emphasis in the importance of early childhood
education, evident from the ongoing effort by the MOE in recent
years to improve the quality of preschools in the country. Children
are valuable resources in our society and they are the future pillars
of the nation. Therefore, they have a right to quality education
regardless of their background. Every child is unique; it is the duty
of the parents to pick the right nursery or preschool to cater
for the needs of their child.
Education
7 GOOD REASONS WHY CHOOSING
AN INTERNATIONAL PRESCHOOL IS A
SMART IDEA
Your children’s early childhood education has a profound and life-long effect on their emotional, social and
physical development as well as who they would become as an adult. This is why it is crucial that you invest in
the best preschool education for your child
In Malaysia, international preschools are one of the top choices
for parents who are seeking quality preschools or kindergartens
for their children – and for good reasons. While international
preschools usually require higher fees than local ones, they offer
a host of benefits that local kindergartens may not be able to
provide. Check out these seven aspects of international preschools
that set them apart from local ones.
1. Comprehensive Curriculum
International preschools offer a well-designed curriculum that
has a global, all-encompassing approach that aims at your child’s
development through cultivating critical thinking, essential skills
and creative expression. Many international preschools also adopt
the internationally recognized International Preschool Curriculum
(IPC) which incorporates play, inquiry and objective-based learning
styles into 6 learning areas including Language Arts, Numeracy,
Creative Arts, Socio-emotional Skills, Sciences and Motor Skills.
Some international preschools also offer STEM-based education
to integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math into their
daily curriculum. Foreign language studies such as Spanish, Italian,
German, Chinese (Mandarin) and French are also available as well.
2. All-Rounded Learning Methods
International preschools usually cater to all types of learners within
a holistic, creative learning environment. Most of them will strive to
achieve a careful balance between teacher-directed tasks and child-
10 Kiddy123 VOL 01

Education
initiated learning, allowing students to learn about things in an
exploratory and meaningful way. Core classes are also often set
up to encourage students to inquire, explore, discover, encounter
and question all they experience around them.
between parents and the school via parents meetings and weekly
newsletters to keep parents informed. At some schools, there
are Parent-Teacher Organizations that offer parents, teachers and
children the opportunity to take an active role together in ensuring
their children's successful development. There are also activities
planned, for instance, get-togethers and social gatherings, picnics,
field trips and more.
3. State-of-the-Art Facilities and Equipment
In terms of facilities, parents can expect excellent learning spaces
at international preschools. Classrooms are bright and welcoming,
designed to provide the optimal learning environment for your
kids. Outside the classroom, there are also different school facilities
that further provide students with the opportunity to explore areas
of interest and pursue their passions. Facilities can range between
indoor or outdoor gyms for physical activities, gardens and spacious
outdoor play spaces as well as libraries and art studios to swimming
pools, dance studios, multi-purpose halls and even science labs and
cooking stations to encourage explanatory learning. These facilities
are also selected and designed to ensure health and safety of
young children. Some international preschools are now integrating
the latest technology into their curriculum. For example, iPads are
used as learning tools in core classes for preschoolers.
4. Qualified Educators
International preschools are meticulous when it comes to their
teaching staff. These schools only employ certified teachers
and learning assistants and usually have a team of experienced
management staffs. These preschools also provide their teachers
wit a comprehensive training program and on-going professional
development opportunities so that they can stay up-to-date with
the latest in pedagogy, learning and educational practices. For
example, in IPC-based preschools, staff members will be provided
with specific IPC Teacher Training courses which will then culminate
into the IPC Teacher Certificate. Additionally, many international
preschools also have low teacher to student ratios to ensure
students receive optimal attention and learning opportunities from
their teachers.
6. Meticulous Policies
International preschools have thorough safety and health policies
in place to ensure students are guaranteed a secure, organized
and healthy environment. There are usually drop-off and pick-up
procedures that only allow adults authorized on the enrolment
form to pick up a child. Sick policies are also non-negotiable –
these schools often follow a strict quarantine and send-home policy
for illnesses emerging. For example, if your child exhibits any of the
symptoms cited in their guidebook, he or she must be kept or sent
home immediately.
7. More Opportunities for Studying Abroad
International preschools prepare students for international
primary and secondary school programs which usually follow
internationally-recognized curriculum such as the International
Baccalaureate program. This IB education model is accepted in
almost all continents and makes entry into overseas universities and
colleges much easier. A survey also reveals that students who have
gone through international education tend to be better prepared
for further study and work. This is because they develop a more
well-rounded range of skills like time management, critical analysis
and independent thinking than their peers who are educated in
national schools.
5. Parental Involvement
International preschools recognise that parents play an important
role in their child’s education process. To have parents more
involved, these preschools encourage frequent communication
9 WAYS TO GET YOUR KIDS
LOVE PRESCHOOL
Tired of hearing all complaints of not wanting to go to school? Here are nine ways to help your kids
feel enthusiastic about their school
Psst!” I have a confession to make. I LOVED school when I was
kid. Every term break I would be counting down the days till I get
to go back to school to learn and play with my friends. Nerd alert,
yes I know. I did notice that not everyone loves school. In fact, a
good portion does not actually enjoy it. Pull away their blankets,
turn on the bright lights and switch off the air-conditioner and
they will still not budge an inch off their beds to go to school.
Most would rather stick their faces in the iPad than read a book;
some would rather ride a bicycle than do their homework. I feel
you, parents. Perhaps, give the following tips a shot to boost their
viewpoint towards school and learning:
Positive Attitude
Everybody and their grandparents know that kids love to ask
“Why?” Let the kids know that school is the place where they
can get all the answers to their whys and the wherefores. Share
with them that access to education is a privilege. Read books
about starting school to stimulate enthusiasm. Otter Goes to
School by Sam Garton is a good read for little ones going to
school for the first time. Model a positive attitude about school to
excite the kids about the new adventure ahead.
Build Up Their Confidence
Boost your kid’s confidence by telling them that you believe in
them and appreciate how they learn. Give praise where praise
is due, teach resilience, instill independence and adventure, and
support their pursuit of a passion. The accumulation of your
encouraging words throughout time can help develop confidence
in the little ones to survive, thrive and love preschool.
Let’s Go Shopping
Shopping, everybody loves some shopping. Alright, not everybody
but taking kids back-to-school shopping is bound to thrill them.
It is a fun activity to let them pick out their choice of stationery,
bags, lunchboxes and drink bottles. Be careful not to go
overboard and mind the budget!
Creative Learning
Spark their interest in learning by turning everyday events
into learning opportunities. Encourage kids to explore the
world around them and bring learning outdoors – go hiking,
walking or playing in the playground. Provide kids with play
opportunities that support different learning styles. Equipment
that aid open-ended play, for example puzzles and blocks, are
great tools to foster learning. Make learning fun and kids would
not refrain school.
Feed Their Interest
Show enthusiasm in your child’s interests and encourage children
to explore and learn further about the subjects that captivate
them. Keep their interests alive and it will make them hungry to
head back to school for more.
Reiterate The Day
To build strong connections between school and home, you need
to stay abreast with what is going on in your child’s school. Find
out what they learned by asking small questions such as: “What
song did you sing for music class today?”, “Did you get time for
water-play?”, “What was for lunch?”. Try to avoid asking one
big question “What did you learn in school today?”. It may be
a simple straightforward question for us adults but for kids it is
daunting to cover the whole day in one question. This will most
likely lead to the answer “I do not know”.
Encourage Their Friendships
Often kids look forward to seeing their friends at school every
day. These little buddies can make a world of a difference for
kids who are not exactly keen on attending classes. Schedule
play dates or plan extracurricular activities together to help those
friendships flourish.
Volunteer At School
If time permits, get involved in school by volunteering – participate in
school activities, attend school events or serve on the parent council.
Kid’s love for school will heighten when they see how much interest
you place in their school. Kids will pick up on your cues.
Celebrate Achievements
Avoid rewards to encourage children to learn. Let learning be
the reward. Feed their curious minds with necessary resources to
help them explore different topics and discover new things. Even
if the kid did not ace in language lessons, he or she may excel in
numbers. Focus on the strengths and nurture talents by providing
relevant supporting tools like wooden abacus or interlocking
cubes. Celebrate their achievements, no matter how small.
At the end of the day, every child is indeed very different. Some
needs no motivation to wake up for school every morning, while
some need a longer time span to acclimate. Avoid forcing and try
positive reinforcement instead.
IMPROVE KIDS’ TECHNOLOGICAL
LEARNING WITH ROBOTICS CLASS
Today, more parents believe that robotics class for kids isn’t just fun, but a great learning tool too. It can help
young children with a variety of cognitive skills, the scientific method of inquiry and problem-solving, handson
learning and nurturing creativity
Prior research suggests that children as young as 4 years old can
successfully build and programme simple robotics projects while
learning a range of engineering and robotics concepts in the
process. For example, early studies with the text-based language
Logo, have shown that computer programming can help young
children with a variety of cognitive skills, including number sense,
language skills and visual memory. Educational robotics kits
have become a new generation of learning manipulatives that
help children develop a stronger understanding of mathematical
concepts such as number, size and shape in much the same way
that traditional materials like pattern blocks, beads and balls do.
“We are examining our education system to create a curriculum
where people learn how to learn so they can continue their
education throughout the rest of their lives. The measure of success
in 2020 will be the number and quality of our people who can add
value to information” – Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, MSC Malaysia
Launch, 1st August 1996.
What Is Robotics
Wikipedia defines robotics as an interdisciplinary branch of
engineering and science that includes mechanical engineering,
electrical engineering, computer science and others. Robotics deals
with the design, construction, operation and use of robots, as
well as computer systems for their control, sensory feedback and
information processing.
Science fiction author, Isaac Asimov is often given credit for being
the first person to use the term robotics in a short story composed
in the 1940s. In the story, Asimov suggested three principles to
guide the behavior of robots and smart machines. Asimov’s Three
Laws of Robotics, as they are called, have survived to the present:
1) Robots must never harm human beings. 2) Robots must follow
instructions from humans without violating Rule 1. 3) Robots must
protect themselves without violating the other rules.
Robotics In Preschools
Down south, our island neighbor of Singapore has in recent
years, increased its emphasis on technology and engineering in
early childhood education. Their newest initiative, the Playmaker
Programme, is focused on teaching robotics and coding in
preschool settings. Robotics offers a playful and collaborative
way for children to engage with foundational technology and
engineering concepts during their formative early childhood years.
Trials with social robots in a preschool environment were conducted
from April till October 2016, with Pepper at My First Skool Jurong
point, and its smaller counterpart NAO at MY World Preschool
at Bukit Panjang. This “Robots for Early Childhood Education”
is a pilot study initiated by the Infocomm Media Development
Authority of Singapore in conjunction with partners such as
SoftBank Telecom Singapore and the Nanyang Technological
University Robotics Research Centre.
Unlike many apps and educational software developed for
children, robotics activities do not involve sitting alone, in front of a
computer. Rather, robotics manipulatives allow children to develop
fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination while also engaging
in collaboration and teamwork. A robotics and programming
also have the potential to foster “computational thinking” in
The New Millennium
In this millennium, students and teachers need to keep abreast
with advancements in ICT to remain competitive and relevant. As
mentioned in the Smart School Conceptual Blueprint (MOE 1997),
technology is used as a tool and should be integrated into the
curriculum rather than be taught separately as an end in itself.
young children. This term has been defined in many ways and
encompasses broad analytic and problem-solving skills, dispositions,
habits and approaches used in computer science. Computational
thinking involves the ability to abstract from computational
instructions (programming languages) to computational behaviours
and to identify potential “bugs” and places of errors.
How Early Is Too Early?
How early is too early to learn coding or basic and elementary
robotics? Even if kids aren’t old enough to know how to read,
they can still start to learn the basic concepts of coding. Primo, a
project on Kickstarter, is a simple kit that a four-year old can use
to programme a cute plywood robot named Cubetto. Pop a series
of coloured boxes into a compiler board, and kids can tell the
adorable robot where to go around the room.
Find Inspiration Online
If you and your kids are ready to tackle some robotics projects on
your own, you can search for inspiration online. There are hundreds
of free and paid tutorials, many of which cater to kids and families.
Makezine.com offers hundreds of maker projects with photos and
instructions. You can sort the projects by type (like robotics and
wearables) and difficulty level.
DIY.org is an online community for kids to connect with each other
and to learn lots of new skills. DIY.org organizes projects under skill
patches (like astronaut, printmaker and toy maker).
Check out skills like Circuit Bender, Bitster, Fabric Hacker, Sensor
Hacker and Hardware Hacker for experiments that teach kids
about robotics.
littleBits allow kids to make simple circuits that can be built into
more elaborate projects that do cool things, like shoot confetti
or draw. littleBits and similar toys can be great for creating
introductory projects since they do not require any loose parts or
complicated tools, but they can be expensive.
Arduino is for older kids who are curious about how things work
or want to combine coding and hardware. Arduino is a small
open-sourced microcontroller (basically, a computer) that can be
programmed into all sorts of inventions.
Raspberry Pi is a small and affordable computer that’s great for
kids. This capable little device plugs into a computer or TV and
allows kids to explore computing with languages like Python and
Scratch. This device can also be used in digital maker projects like
robots or music machines.
Creative Preschool Robot Crafts and Activities
Here are a few robot crafts and activities that encourage and
incorporate learning that kids will love. Below you will find ideas
that include everything from learning about shapes, mathematics,
fine motor skills, creative crafts and building robots with
recyclable materials.
Special Education
SPECIAL NEEDS EDUCATION FOR
CHILDREN - MALAYSIAN OVERVIEW
Despite governments signing up to many a convention and seemingly supporting international guidelines on
children with special needs, prejudices and exclusion still form part of everyday life for many children with
special needs around the world. The principle of ‘inclusive education’ put forward at the UNESCO-convened
Salamanca conference in 1994 has been a major step forward, but a lot remains to be done
no services whatsoever. Indeed, in many developing countries,
it is estimated that less than 1 percent of children with special
educational needs are included in existing provision.
It is also particularly important to recognize that women have often
been doubly disadvantaged, bias based on gender compounding
the difficulties caused by their disabilities. Women and men should
have equal influence on the design of educational programmes and
the same opportunities to benefit from them. Special efforts should
be made to encourage the participation of girls and women with
disabilities in educational programmes.
What is Special Needs Education
In the context of the Salamanca conference, the term special
‘educational needs’ refers to all those children and youth whose
needs arise from disabilities or learning difficulties. Many children
experience learning difficulties and thus have special educational
needs at some time during their schooling. It assumes that human
differences are normal and that learning must accordingly be
adapted to the needs of the child rather than the child fitted to
preordained assumptions regarding the pace and nature of the
learning process.
Experience in many countries demonstrates that the integration of
children and youth with special educational needs is best achieved
within inclusive schools that serve all children within a community.
It is within this context that those with special educational needs
can achieve the fullest educational progress and social integration.
The fundamental principle of the inclusive school is that all children
should learn together, wherever possible, regardless of any
difficulties or differences they may have.
Malaysian Perspective
Article 28 of Malaysia’s Persons with Disabilities Act 2008 affirms
that special needs children are to be given the necessary support
to “facilitate their full and equal participation in education”.
Based on international best practices and current national policy,
the Malaysian Ministry of Education is committed to moving
more students with special needs towards the inclusive education
programme and raising the overall quality of the provision. The
Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013-2025 outlines the action
plan for inclusive education in “Improving Access in Preschool
Education: Inclusive Education Programme (IEP) Initiative”
Inclusive Education
Inclusive education means giving each and every child an
opportunity to learn at their local school with enough support for
them to reach their full potential. This does not require special
institutions, care or expensive materials. It simply means that all
students should have the opportunity to receive individualised
services and approaches to learning. In Malaysia, the Ministry of
We Are All Different
The situation regarding special needs education varies enormously
from one country to another. There are, for example, countries
that have well established systems of special schools for those with
specific impairments. However, especially in developing countries,
indications are that the high cost of special schools means, in
practice, that only a small minority of students, usually an urban
elite, benefit from them. The vast majority of students with special
needs, especially in rural areas, are as a consequence provided with
Special Education
Education provides children with disabilities with three schooling
options under the national special needs education system:
Quick Facts
Following are some quick facts and figures from a UNICEF report
titled Inclusive Education, Malaysia dated June 2014 with data from
Malaysia Educational Statistics 2012 (Quick Facts):
Special Education Schools
These are special schools for children with disabilities. There are
currently 33 Special Education Schools:
Primary Schools: 28
• 22 for children with hearing disabilities
• 5 for children with visual disabilities
• 1 for children with learning disabilities
Secondary schools: 5
• 3 vocational schools
• 1 academic school for children with visual disability
• 1 academic school for children with hearing disabilities
Special Education Integrated Programme (SEIP)
Specific classes in mainstream schools dedicated to children with
special needs. There are currently under 2,000 mainstream schools
with SEIP.
• Primary schools: 1,300
• Secondary schools: 670
Inclusive Education Programme
Children with disabilities are integrated into mainstream classes
In 2010, the Ministry of Education enrolled 48,140 children with
disabilities in these three programmes, representing around 1 per
cent of the total student population in the national school system
at the time. In the same year, the Ministry of Education estimated
around 200,000 students with disabilities in the primary school
population had gone unidentified; while some 23,000 children
with disabilities were out of school.
The overall percentage of children with disabilities within the
total student population in the national school system is around
1%. The number of children with disabilities enrolled in inclusive
education programmes declined from 6,360 in 2010 to 562 in
2012. The 562 children with disabilities enrolled in the Inclusive
Education Programme in mainstream classes in 2012 represents:
• around 1% out of the 50,738 children with disabilities
enrolled in special needs education in that year;
• around 0.01% out of the 5,086,180 students (both with
and without disabilities) who were enrolled in the national
education system in that year.
Hope For The Future
Special needs education in Malaysia is quite a way off when
compared to any of the more advanced nations in the world.
However, as in all matters pertaining to an ever-evolving society,
there is always room for advancement, room for improvement,
being the optimist that I am. Inclusive education needs to
be driven by strategic partnerships between diverse actors,
including families and communities, local and national NGOs,
international organisations and governments, and in particular
organisations of people with disabilities, families and children
with disabilities themselves.
In short, all of us need to play our part. After all, we are all brothers
and sisters of a common Mother – Earth. We need to be able
to find closure. We need to be able to heal. We need to come
together as one for the betterment of each other.
