The TIE that binds the church & home together Volume 79, Issue 10 Page 2 Youth Ministry FBC Student Ministry Values In September our students started meeting again on Wednesday nights beginning with the churchwide fellowship meal followed by games and Bible Study. During Bible study our students have been learning about our values as a student ministry. These values help us to see youth group as: -a place to be... friends -a place to grow... in faith -a place to serve... others These values help direct our ministry and give guidance to all programming from fun events to mission projects. So what do these values mean? A Place to Be Friends “I have called you friends…” John 15:15 In the Gospel of John, Jesus calls his disciples friends and he teaches them what true friendship look like. It involves laying downs one's life for one's friends. For our student ministry this means time together is of the highest importance. As we share in life and faith we learn how to support one another and help one another. We believe that relationships are at the heart of youth ministry. Each event we do together—from retreats to community meals, from games to mission projects—seeks to deepen friendships. We like to deepen friendship through sharing experiences together. These include camping trips, hiking, pool parties, game nights, and more. We seek to create an environment where each student can be who God created them to be within the context of Christian friendship. A Place to Grow in Faith "...so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God." Colossians 1:10 We hope that each student grows in faith and knowledge about God during their years in youth group. We provide opportunities twice a week for students to grow in faith through gathering for Bible study and fellowship. Youth Sunday morning Bible study features a large group gathering followed by smaller group time of middle and high school groups. Our high school students are going through the ENTIRE Bible (it’s a long term study!). Currently they are on the book of Acts. Our middle school covers various biblical topics and themes. On Wednesday nights the whole group meets together for games, Bible study, and fellowship led by Pastor Kyle and adult leaders. One Wednesday each month we do a mission/community service project (this is about putting our growing faith into action). A Place to Serve "Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all." Mark 9:35 One of the primary ways we grow in the way of Jesus is by serving and loving our neighbors. Throughout the year our youth do hands-on ministry in our church, community, and region. In addition to Passport Missions Camp in Danville, VA, our students participate monthly in service to our local community. This year we will continue by serving at Bright Futures. Bright Futures helps address food insecurity within Winchester City Schools and Frederick County Public Schools. By serving at Bright Futures our students are helping serve other students in the community. Our hope is that each student would develop a passion for serving and loving others as Christ taught us. There is a fun kitchen, chalkboard, and a variety of activities in that corner for kids to enjoy on Wednesday evenings and any other times they are in the fellowship hall. Please consider decorating your trunk for our Trunk or Treat event!! October 27th 4- 5pm. This is a wonderful outreach opportunity! Last year we had about 100 people come through our parking lot! How does it work? You dress up and decorate your trunk! Families walk to each trunk to receive candy and enjoy your decorations! Prizes will be awarded to the top three trunks!!!!
