Metrowest resident Jimmy

Petroski, 32, is one of the most

outgoing and active people you will

ever meet. He is a thrill-seeking adventurer

who enjoys skateboarding,

playing basketball, water-skiing,

handcycling, archery, weightlifting

and Zumba. Not something you’d

expect from someone confined to a

wheelchair his entire life.

Born with spina bifida, a birth defect

in which the spine and spinal

cord do not form properly, Jimmy

has never seen his condition as a

disability.

“There is nothing that I cannot do

in some capacity.”

He has done more physical activities

than many able-bodied

people. He has gone skateboarding

via a special chair and played

in a wheelchair basketball game

at the Amway Center during halftime

at an Orlando Magic game. In

2012, he became a certified Zumba

instructor.

This past June, Jimmy went water-skiing

through Ann’s Angels

Adaptive Waterski Foundation, a

nonprofit organization based in

Winter Haven.

“That was an amazing experience!”

he said. “I sat in a chair

bolted to a boogie board and held

onto a handle on a rope, like any

regular water-skier would. I was going

at a high rate of speed but always

had two guides hanging on

to separate ropes connected to my

board.”

Jimmy is very active in the community.

He spends much of his

time working out and volunteering

at the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA and

has shared his inspiring story with

students at Tavares Middle School.

Jimmy is rarely seen without a smile

and is happy to answer questions

about spina bifida.

“I am often approached by children

with questions about what it’s

like being in a wheelchair,” he said.

“I completely understand their curiosity.

I much prefer people asking

me questions rather than making

assumptions.”

Jimmy is also a volunteer with the

Spina Bifida Association of Central

Florida and is currently fundraising

for the organization. The funds

will go toward programs and services

for those living with spina

bifida.

“Jimmy is a very kind and

SPOTLIGHT

dependable volunteer,” said

Shannon Bevans, program coordinator.

“He is always willing

to help with whatever tasks are

needed. Jimmy is always one of

by Karen Nimetz our top fundraisers. For the last two

years that I have been involved

with SBACFL, he has always gathered

donations from his friends

and family to support our cause.

SBACFL is very thankful for his

continued volunteer service to this

community.”

Jimmy is excited to be volunteering

as well as participating in

the upcoming SBACFL Orlando

Walk-N-Roll, taking place Nov.

3 at 8:30 a.m. at Dr. P. Phillips

Community Park. The family-friendly

event aims to “raise

awareness about spina bifida and

celebrate the accomplishments of

the more than 177,000 Americans

living with it.”

Florida Center for Hormones & Wellness

Balancing Hormones and Restoring Lives Again

Could your health issues be the

cause of not just getting older but because

of a hormonal imbalance?

Research has shown that hormone

balance can lessen the risks of heart

disease, colon cancer, Alzheimer’s

disease, macular degeneration and

a host of other life-threatening conditions.

Most of all — as described by

John C. Carrozzella, M.D., of the

Florida Center for Hormones &

Wellness in Dr. Phillips — people

with balanced hormones feel as

though they have gained back their

lives and energy.

“The more you balance your hormones

and the more aggressively you

balance them, the better people tend

to be,” Dr. Carrozzella said. “They

look more youthful, they have more

energy, they have better relationships,

and so much more. Hormone optimization

is good for you and your wellbeing,

[metabolically] speaking.”

Bioidentical Hormones

The life-changing treatment that has

restored people’s lives is bioidentical

hormone optimization therapy. This

treatment uses hormones that are

identical to the hormones in the body.

They are manufactured from a simple

substance, found in soy and yam,

and they rarely cause serious adverse

effects.

“Bioidentical hormones are exact

copies of the hormones in your body,”

Dr. Carrozzella said. “Since they are

identical, the body recognizes them

and knows exactly what to do with

them. Bioidentical hormones are virtually

clones, so your body handles

them the same way as natural hormones,

and they don’t cause adverse

effects like those seen with synthetic

hormones.”

After meeting with a patient, Dr.

Carrozzella forms a treatment plan

@Phillips Photography

(L. to r.) Patrick Dermody; Amanda Brown; John Carrozzella, M.D.; Jody Layne; Courtney Helms and Kierstin Carrion help

patients take back their lives at Florida Center for Hormones & Wellness.

with the goal of helping the patient

reach optimum hormone levels.

Interestingly, an optimum level may

not be just what is “normal” for his or

her gender or age group. Not every

person requires the same hormone

levels, due to hormone-receptor sensitivity

issues, environmental damage,

genetics or other factors. So, creating

a treatment plan that is catered to

reaching an optimum level that places

a higher value on symptom control as

opposed to a lab value is a treatment

plan that helps patients the most.

The treatment plan also might include

supplement usage, which Dr.

Carrozzella likens to using sandpaper

to make a surface smooth.

“Getting that final hormone balance

with supplement support is crucial, and

we have specific tests that look at patients’

nutrient levels,” he said. “With

that, we can measure where they are

deficient with specific nutrients.”

Hormonal imbalance can also

affect the intimacy needs of a patient.

As a result, many couples seek

PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

Dr. Carrozzella’s help to restore their

sexual relationships with their spouses.

For women with intimacy issues,

the center offers the Geneveve device

treatment that may help women

improve sexual responsiveness and

control urinary incontinence. This

treatment is sometimes combined

with the O-Shot that provides sexual

healing using healing factors derived

directly from the person’s own blood.

For men, Pulsewave Therapy is used

to direct sound waves toward the lining

of blood vessels of the penis to

increase healing. There is also Dr.

Carrozzella’s 21-point program for

erectile dysfunction that has shown

remarkable results for his patients.

Caring for Patients

Even with the revolutionary treatments

that have helped to restore the

hormonal vitality of men and women

in Central Florida, what the staff

of Florida Center for Hormones &

Wellness does most is show patients

they are loved and cared for.

“By patients just telling me their

stories [with the first consultation],

I can often tell you pretty much

what is wrong with their health,” Dr.

Carrozzella said. “When you know

how the hormones work and what

they do, and you hear people say

what is wrong, you know what to do.”

This explains why many patients

have returned to the center and Dr.

Carrozzella with tears of joy, because

they feel like themselves again, and

intimacy has been achieved again

with their spouses.

“Seeing the renewal in vitality and

wellness in my patients is the best job

in the world for me. This is the best

job in the world to where you can

heal people and prevent them from

[having] future diseases.”

Home Care Assistance of Orlando

5178 Dr. Phillips Blvd., Orlando • 407-232-7155

www.homecareassistanceorlando.com.

Home Care Assistance of Orlando, a leading provider of in-home care for seniors,

serves Dr. Phillips and the surrounding communities of Orlando. Jim Pasquinelli,

president/owner, made it his mission to create a place that is integrated into the community

the company serves. According to a recent study, 89 percent of American seniors

said they would prefer to live at home rather than in a care facility. Yet, every

year, thousands of seniors continue to enter nursing homes without knowing they have

another option: to age in the comfort of their own homes with the help of a high-caliber

caregiver. Officials at Home Care Assistance hire only the most qualified people to

work as caregivers for their clients. They also don’t just assign a caregiver, they do their

absolute best to match their clients with the right caregiver, so clients feel safe, comfortable

and secure in their own homes. Home Care Assistance caregivers are expertly

trained in the Balanced Care Method, a system that incorporates nutrition, physical

activity, socialization and mental stimulation in order to enhance the health and wellness

of their clients. Caregivers also provide the following services: companionship,

transportation and help with errands, light housekeeping, meal preparation, medication

reminders and basic hygiene.

the Dr. Phillips Regional Care Center recently relocated to an expanded 18,000-squarefoot

Olympia Compounding Pharmacy

6700 Conroy-Windermere Road, Suite 155, Orlando • 407-673-2222

www.olympiapharmacy.com

Olympia Compounding Pharmacy is an FDA-registered, 503B facility and a

national leader in compounded medications. Olympia opened a brand-new,

state-of-the-art facility in June 2014. This facility is registered as a Food and Drug

Administration outsourcing facility. As one of only a few outsourcing facilities in

the state, Olympia can provide patient-specific prescriptions as well as “office use”

medications for physician offices, clinics and hospitals. The Compounding Quality

Act, which was signed into law in November 2013, stipulates that only an FDAregistered

outsourcing facility can provide “office use” medications. Outsourcing

facilities are held to a much higher standard of operation than traditional compounding

pharmacies. Prior to the Compounding Quality Act, there were approximately

10,000 sterile compounders across the country. With the new regulations

being adopted, only 70 of the previous 10,000 have been able to reach the designation

of a 503B facility. The pharmacists at Olympia have more than 30 years

of experience in bringing patients high-quality medications and excellent customer

service. Patients can call to receive a free, personal consultation about any of their

specialty medications. Because one size does not always fit all, Olympia’s experts

consult with patients every day and help develop personalized, custom regimens.

Olympia is an innovator in men’s health. As men grow older, they may experience

These conditions are easily correctable with proper treatment, and Olympia’s

women of all ages, but there is hope. Medical weight loss is a safe, effective way

to lose weight. With medications like hCG and sermorelin, tremendous success

is being enjoyed by many. Olympia has the largest lyophilization facility in the

eastern U.S., allowing hCG and sermorelin to be compounded on-site, making

it very cost-effective and high-quality. The pharmacy compounds B-12, vitamin B

complex and fat-burning injections; topical medications such as pain, wound and

bleaching creams; and other dermatologic treatments. Olympia is a pioneer in

women’s health and bioidentical hormones. Bioidentical means the hormones that

are used are an exact molecular match to hormones produced by the body. This

Balanced hormones help women of all ages look and feel younger, stay slimmer

Westbrooke Elementary School

teachers spent their preplanning week

gearing up for the new year, taking to heart

that “the keys for success will open many

doors.” They enjoyed food provided by a

few of the school’s Partners in Education,

including First Watch Winter Garden,

Einstein Bros. Bagels, Kona Ice and

Subway in Ocoee. The PTO also

sponsored a lunch from Tijuana Flats.
