According to the experts at Edmunds.com,
an automotive research and advice group,
involving teens in the process of selecting a
car helps teach them responsibility and learn
lessons about money that may help them
make smart choices in the future.
• Manage expectations. Cars are generous
gifts and not something teenagers have
a right to. Teenagers may not realize the
expenses involved in acquiring, running and
insuring a vehicle. Parents can explain all
of these factors. Unless the teen has enough
money to buy his or her own car, the final
call is up to the parents on how much to
spend and which vehicle to choose.
• Note that bigger isn’t always better.
Some parents think their teens will be safer
in a truck or SUV. While large vehicles may
fare slightly better in a crash, they can be
more cumbersome to park and drive, especially
for novices. A large vehicle may tempt
teens to pile in friends for a Saturday night,
but research indicates the risk of a crash
increases with multiple teens in a car.
• Choose safety over looks. Safety should
be the top priority. According to the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, teen
drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 are
four times more likely to crash than older
drivers. Choose a vehicle with a high safety
rating over one that looks stylish or comes
equipped with distracting bells and whistles.
• Pass down the family roadster. Teenagers
may anticipate being handed the keys to a
brand-new or previously owned vehicle off
of a dealership lot. But giving him or her a
set of keys to a car already in the driveway
may be more practical. Everyone involved
already knows the history, driving capabilities,
safety statistics, and potential quirks of
cars that have been in the family for years.
It may not be flashy, but cars already in the
driveway will get teenagers from point A to
point B just as effectively as those currently
sitting idle on the dealership lot.
Outfitting a new teen driver with a car
requires careful research.
Did you know?
The disclaimer “Objects in mirror are closer
than they appear” is featured on passenger-side
mirrors of vehicles manufactured in the United
States, Canada, India, Korea, and Australia. These
mirrors are convex, which means they distort
the size of objects viewed in the mirror, and as
such, distorts the perception of how close or far
away objects are from the driver’s car. However,
this distortion allows for the reflection of a wider
field of view on the side of the vehicle to help
eliminate blind spots. In the United States and
Canada, driver’s side mirrors are flat or planar.
Dual convex mirrors are not currently the norm
on vehicles manufactured in North America
based on requirements implemented by the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 and
the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111.
Elsewhere, such as in Europe, dual convex mirrors
are included on vehicles. Many automotive
companies support having two convex mirrors on
the sides of cars to eliminate blind spots, as well
as reduce the driver’s need to twist his head to the
left when turning or changing lanes. However,
flat mirrors have been required to avoid distortion
and give drivers the most accurate assessment of
traffic to their left for changing lanes, called unit
magnification. This may soon change, though.
According to a 2013 statement from the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration, The
agency intends to reevaluate existing side-mirror
requirements (FMVSS No. 111) to determine
whether convex mirrors should be harmonized
with European requirements.” Currently, drivers
can modify their driver’s-side mirrors to include a
convex mirror add-on, as long as the mirrors also
have the required flat portion.
According to a report from MMGY
Global, a travel and hospitality marketing
firm, road trips represented 39 percent of
vacations taken by United States travelers
in 2016. Road trips also remain popular in
Canada, where vast, rugged terrain makes
for idyllic trips.
Before embarking on road trips, motorists
would be wise to inspect their vehicles to
ensure their getaways are not derailed by car
troubles.
• Brake fluid: Squeaky brakes are not the
only potential indicator of brake problems.
Brake fluid, which should always be topped
off before beginning a road trip, also might
shed light on potentially serious problems.
According to the National Motorists Association,
brake fluid looks honey-like and
translucent when fresh. A puddle beneath a
vehicle that is clear to brown and slick indicates
a brake fluid leak, which can ultimately
lead to a complete failure of the brakes. The
NMA recommends brake fluid be changed at
least once every three to four years.
• Transmission fluid: When fresh, transmission
fluid is red, darkening over time.
However, transmission fluid should never
appear brown or black, which indicates potential
internal damage to the transmission.
To determine if there are any issues with the
transmission fluid, the NMA recommends
drivers wipe a cool dipstick between their
thumb and index finger. If even the slightest
bit of grit is felt when wiping the dipstick,
the transmission is likely in need of work.
• Oil: Drivers should change their vehicles’
oil before embarking on road trips,
especially if such trips will be lengthy. The
NMA notes that fresh oil is light to dark
amber and translucent, and that is how oil
typically looks immediately after an oil
change. Oil darkens over time, and that is
natural (black oil indicates it’s time for an oil
change). However, oil that appears cloudy
or milky indicates that coolant is getting
into the oil, perhaps due to gasket problems.
Drivers who are not getting their vehicles’
oil changed before a road trip should at least
check their oil before leaving to inspect the
color of the oil and ensure the vehicle has
enough oil.
• Windshield washer fluid: The unknown
of the open road is part of what makes it so
appealing. While many road trippers plan
their trips during the summer and fall when
the weather tends to be both pleasant and
predictable, there’s no guarantee inclement
weather won’t rear its ugly head. Filling the
windshield washer fluid reservoir before embarking
on a trip ensures drivers’ visibility
won’t be adversely affected by unforeseen
issues that can soil windshields.
Checking fluids before embarking on a
road trip can help drivers avoid breakdowns
and ensure a safe, fun trip.
Vermont’s archery deer season starts Saturday, October 6. VTF&W photo by John Hall.
Vermont’s Archery Deer Season Starts Oct. 6
The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department
says hunters are looking forward to Vermont’s
upcoming October 6 - November 2 and
December 1-9 archery deer hunting season.
A hunter may take up to two deer in
Vermont’s two-part archery season with the
purchase of two archery licenses. No more
than one of the deer taken during archery
season may be a legal buck. Antlerless deer
hunting is allowed statewide this year during
archery season.
In Vermont a hunter may take up to three
deer in a calendar year in any combination of
seasons (Archery, Youth Weekend, November
Rifle Season, December Muzzleloader). Of
these, only two may be legal bucks, and only
one buck may be taken in each season. A
“legal buck” is a deer with at least one antler
having two or more points one inch or longer.
All three deer in the annual bag limit may be
antlerless deer.
Hunters must have a standard hunting
license in order to purchase an add-on archery
deer hunting license, except that nonresidents
may purchase an “archery only deer license”
costing $75. Licenses may be quickly and
easily purchased on Fish & Wildlife’s website
(www.vtfishandwildlife.com).
Hunters planning a Vermont archery deer
hunting trip should download a copy of the
2017 White-tailed Deer Harvest Report from
Fish & Wildlife’s website. It has the number
of deer taken in each town in last year’s deer
hunting seasons. Hunters took 3,578 deer during
the 2017 archery season, and the average
of the last three years is 3,481.
For more information and a summary of
regulations, download the 2018 Deer Season
Guide on Vermont Fish & Wildlife’s website.
Muzzleloader Antlerless Deer
Permit Winners Announced
Deer hunters who applied for a Vermont
muzzleloader season antlerless deer permit by
the August 29 deadline can now go to the
Vermont Fish & Wildlife website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com)
to see if they won a permit.
Fish & Wildlife announced the winners on
September 26, after conducting a randomized
computer drawing. Permit winners are listed
in two categories: regular lottery winners and
landowners. Landowners who apply for a
landowner antlerless permit are prohibited by
law from posting their land against hunting.
“Hunters can go to our website to find out
if they are recipients of a muzzleloader season
antlerless permit,” said Fish & Wildlife
Commissioner Louis Porter. “Knowing early
if they’ve won, will help them plan their hunting
this fall.”
“They can follow a link on our home page
to go to the listing of permit winners. Those
who applied online will receive an email notification.”
Permit recipients will need to reprint their
licenses, which have been reformatted to
include their antlerless permits. Paper “post
card” permits will not be sent in regular mail.
A total of 27,000 December muzzleloader
season antlerless permits are authorized for
use in 18 of Vermont’s 21 Wildlife
Management Units (WMUs) which is estimated
to result in 3,914 antlerless deer being
taken.
“The number of muzzleloader season antlerless
deer permits was increased slightly
this year to reduce deer populations in some
parts of Vermont,” said Nick Fortin, deer
project leader for the Fish & Wildlife
Department. “Consecutive mild winters in
2016 and 2017 and a moderate winter in 2018
have allowed for deer population growth
throughout the state.”
“Harvesting antlerless deer affords
Vermont hunters the chance to secure locally
sourced food for their families,” Porter noted.
“It also helps the department balance the deer
population with the available habitat.”
Unallocated Antlerless
Deer Permits Available
The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department says it has several
thousand unallocated antlerless deer permits to be used in
the December 1-9 muzzleloader deer season after it held its
annual permit lottery on September 26.
These permits can be purchased for $10 on the department’s
website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com) on a first come,
first served basis.
The unallocated permits are available because not enough
people applied for them in the lottery. Fourteen Wildlife
Management Units (WMUs) had some permits available on
September 27, but that number will decrease as permits are
sold.
A person who won a permit in the lottery may not purchase
a second permit unless they take a deer with their first permit
in the December season and then only if they have not
reached their three-deer annual limit or two-deer muzzleloader
season limit.
Tree Stand Safety Tips for Hunters
Tree stands get hunters out of sight and smell of wary deer,
but they can also get hunters into trouble. Here are some tips
from the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department to help stay
safe and get the most out of your tree stand hunting experience:
• Choose a live, straight tree.
• Buy smart. Only use stands certified by the Treestand
Manufacturers Association (TMA).
• Inspect them each time you use them.
• Know the rules. On state lands, it is illegal to place nails
or other hardware into trees or to build permanent structures.
On private lands, you must have landowner permission to
erect a tree stand, cut or remove trees or other plants, or to cut
limbs. All stands, including ground blinds, must be marked
with the owner’s name and address.
• Always wear a full-body safety harness, even for climbing.
Most falls occur going up and down the tree and getting
in and out of the stand.
• Don’t go too high. The higher you go, the vital zone on a
deer decreases, while the likelihood of a serious injury
increases.
• Never carry firearms or bows up and down trees. Always
use a haul line to raise and lower all gear. Make sure your
firearm is unloaded.
• Familiarize yourself with your gear before you go. The
morning of opening day is a poor time to put your safety belt
on for the first time.
• Be careful with long-term placement. Exposure can damage
straps, ropes and attachment cords. Also, the stand’s stability
can be compromised over time, as the tree grows.
“Hunter education instructors want you to be safe this coming
season,” said Nicole Meier, information and education
specialist for Fish & Wildlife. “Falls from tree stands are a
major cause of death and serious injury to deer hunters, but
they are preventable by always wearing a full-body harness
and staying connected to the tree.”
Cyanobacteria - a Concern for Waterfowl Hunters
Waterfowl hunters who will have retrieving
dogs with them during Vermont’s waterfowl
hunting seasons should check waterbodies
for cyanobacteria (also known as bluegreen
algae) blooms before allowing their
dogs in the water according to the Vermont
Agency of Natural Resources.
Cyanobacteria can produce toxins that are
hazardous to dogs. Each year, there are several
reports of dog deaths around the country
caused by cyanobacteria.
“While cooler weather may knock down
existing blooms on some lakes, the same
weather may stimulate blooms on other
lakes,” said Angela Shambaugh, an environmental
scientist with the Agency of Natural
Resources. “As waterfowl season gets underway,
waterfowl hunters should know to keep
their dogs away from cyanobacteria blooms.
Because many of them are out on the water
well before daylight, they should consider
checking conditions the day before.”
“Don’t let pets or livestock swim in or
drink from areas where the water is discolored
or where you see foam, scum or mats of
cyanobacteria on the water’s surface,” she
added. “The Vermont Department of Health
maintains an online map of cyanobacteria
blooms reported around the state and on Lake
Champlain. Visit their webpage to view the
map and watch their video to learn how to
recognize cyanobacteria.” The Health
Department also has a fact sheet for veterinarians
and pet owners.
Vermont’s youth waterfowl hunting weekend
was September 29 and 30, and the regular
season for duck and goose hunting begins
October 13.
Vermont 4-H’ers Place in Big E Dairy Events
Eastern States Exposition, in West
Springfield, Massachusetts, featured several
dairy competitions for 4-H’ers from all six
New England states during the first few days
of its Sept. 14-30 run.
All 4-H dairy exhibitors, including 30
4-H’ers from Vermont, competed in the general
knowledge contest. Two Vermonters finished
in the top ten in their respective age
groups. Caroline Kirby, East Montpelier, took
top honors in the Junior Division (12-14) and
was awarded the Moon Trophy for highest
individual score in that division. Calvin
Seward, East Wallingford, placed fourth in
the Senior Division (15 and older).
Both Caroline and Calvin also competed
on the state’s quiz bowl team, which finished
second out of six teams. Questions covered
feeds and feeding, herd health, breeding and
genetics, milk quality and dairy foods, among
other topics.
Caroline was high overall scorer and
Calvin was ninth. Other team members were
Dana Seward, East Wallingford; and Chandra
The Spring 4-H Paper Clover Campaign
raised $3,033 for 4-H in Vermont. Ninety
percent of that total stayed in the state while
10 percent went to National 4-H to support its
programming. For information about the
The grilled cheese competition featured
two separate contests. For the traditional
grilled cheese category, teams prepared their
entry using only use bread, butter and their
choice of cheese. Entries in the specialty
sandwich category were required to include
the same three ingredients with no restriction
on additional ingredients, provided that the
end product contained at least 60 percent
cheese.
Although teams could enter both contests,
the Vermont team chose to compete just in the
latter category, placing second overall. Team
members were Katherine Howard, East
Thetford; Mairen Poirier, Wells River; and
Ron Senecal, Bradford.
For both contests, each team had to prepare
three sandwiches for judging with entries
evaluated on taste, creativity and presentation.
The judges also awarded points for
proper food handling and food safety as well
as how well the 4-H’ers worked as a team,
including their ability to answer questions
during preparation and tasting. For more
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Provides Support
to Combat Bat-Killing Fungal Disease
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service (Service) is providing
much needed support in
the fight against the bat-killing
fungal disease whitenose
syndrome (WNS)
through an additional $1 million
in grants to 39 states and
the District of Columbia.
WNS has killed millions of
North American bats in
recent years, decimating
many populations and putting
several species at additional
risk of extinction.
Bats are crucial to our nation’s farmers and
foresters, helping control pest insects such as
beetles and locusts, and significantly reducing
the amount of toxic pesticides that would otherwise
be needed. Studies estimate bats save
farmers at least $3.7 billion per year in lost
crop revenue and pesticide savings.
Funds will help states support a national
strategy for the disease, which includes
increasing bat survival rates, preventing further
spread and preparing for the potential
arrival of the disease in new areas. This year’s
grants bring the total funding to states for
WNS response over the last eight years to $8
million. This financial support is part of a
Service-led, cooperative, international effort
involving more than 100 state, federal, tribal,
academic and non-profit partners.
For example, last year the Maine
Department of Inland Fisheries used funds to
search for bats hibernating in rock rubble
because Maine has only a handful of caves
and mines where bats hibernate. This year
they plan to expand the search to wells after
talking with their counterparts to the northeast
on Prince Edward Island, where bats commonly
hibernate in wells. Several other states
across the country will also look for bats in
places other than caves and mines where the
impacts of the fungus that causes white-nose
syndrome have not been thoroughly documented.
First discovered in New York in the winter
of 2006-2007, the WNS fungus has now
spread to at least 36 states and seven Canadian
provinces and infects nine of the top 10 agricultural
producing states.
Funds may be used to support activities
addressing WNS including response planning,
population monitoring, sample collection for
disease surveillance, containment, and outreach
and support of research, such as experimental
treatment research funded by the
National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Bats
for the Future Fund. Additional information
about WNS is available at www.whitenosesyndrome.org/.
You can also learn more about
WNS by following the Service’s WNS
Facebook, Twitter and Flickr pages.
