• By Ashleigh Monk
RESOURCE CONSENT has been
granted for a Pak’nSave to be built
near the intersection of Main
North and Northcote Rds.
Building is expected to start at
171 Main North Rd in the next
few months, and will take up to
12-18 months to complete.
The proposed Northcote Entertainment
Sports Terminal was
set to be built at the site but the
supermarket will go there instead.
Foodstuffs head of external relations
Antoinette Laird said the
site was chosen because Papanui
is an “up-and-coming” area.
“The Main North Rd site will
service a growing and exciting
community,” she said.
“We’re pretty sure the new
Pak’nSave will be a real asset to
the community.”
A Pak’nSave branded petrol
station will also be built on the
site.
Said Ms Laird: “There are many
factors to take into account when
developing a project of this scale.
With every new store we look
to incorporate features which
celebrate the area in terms of look
and feel.”
A TOP job by Bernadine Worsdale to
probably save a chap’s life (see page 8).
Bernadine battled unbearable heat to
alert her dozing neighbour that his house
was on fire.
People react differently in times of crisis or emergency. Some
will freeze; others will react like Bernadine did. It all depends
on how we are wired.
So for Bernadine’s neighbour, he is very lucky she was wired
to act. In spite of the heat, she prised open a window and yelled
at him.
“I think he was sleeping, if I hadn’t of known his name, he
may have not woken up and responded . . . it was so intense, I
hate fire, the heat was unbearable.”
Good stuff Bernadine.
Problem trees in dispute
• By Ashleigh Monk
HAREWOOD RESIDENTS are
struggling with troublesome oak
trees while the city council is
unsure whose responsibility it is
to pay for their removal.
Graeme and Diane Barber have
lived in their Cam Pl home since
1983 – but
shortly after
they moved in,
six oak trees
were planted
in Pasadena
Reserve, which
have now
grown to 16m
Sam
MacDonald
and block their
sun.
In the
original plans, a road was
supposed to run through the
reserve and this led to confusion
over whether the oaks are
deemed street trees or reserve
trees.
If they are reserve trees, the
city council would be responsible
for the cost of removing them,
but if they are street trees it
would be up to residents to pay.
Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board
chairman Sam MacDonald said
the board has requested city
council staff investigate the issue.
“Normally these things can
TOWERING TREES: Harewood resident Graeme Barber is fed
up with the 16m oak trees near his home dropping debris and
shading his property.
be turned around in a week, but
because of the technical nature
of this, I just wanted to paint the
full picture, so it’ll take about six
weeks.”
“It’s on a bit of disputed land,
and we’re just trying to get some
clarity around what the process
is and how we manage that,” he
said.
Mr Barber said he has battled
the city council over the trees for
the last decade.
“They’re in the wrong place
and have grown too large. Why
do the needs and well-being of
people overshadow the needs of a
healthy tree?”
He said the trees could grow
up to 24m – the equivalent of an
eight-story building.
“They wouldn’t build
something that tall next to
people’s houses, so why are they
allowing the trees to be there?”
he said.
He said arborists occasionally
pruned the trees, but it wasn’t
enough.
“Their maintenance cycle is a
lot less than what is needed here.
If you complain, you see a flurry
of activity and then it stops,” he
said.
“They’re the wrong trees in
the wrong place, and they can’t
be fixed unless you take them
down.”
A similar problem has also
arisen in Upper Riccarton. The
residents of Villa Grove wanted
the city council to remove 22 oak
trees, which were 24-years-old
and ranged between 8.1-15.8m
high.
However, the Halswell-
Hornby-Riccarton Community
Board declined to go ahead with
residents’ request to have the
trees removed, and resolved to
continue with maintenance.
BELFAST BRIDGE
One-lane traffic has opened on
the new Belfast Rd bridge. Road
users were able to use the bridge
for first time yesterday, and the
Christchurch Northern Corridor
Alliance team expect to have
both lanes open on November 3.
The remaining work is weather
dependent, and a 30km/h speed
limit will remain in place until the
bridge has been completed.
PLUNKET ROOM WORK
Work has re-started on the
Redwood Plunket rooms, which
are being repaired following
earthquake damage. Significant
cracking on the walls and ceiling
will be fixed before the building
is opened again. The project
is expected to be completed
this month but was originally
scheduled to be finished in June. It
was delayed due to the discovery
of black mould, which increased
the cost of the project by $25,000.
SPEED LIMIT STAYS
The speed limit in the Prestons
subdivision will remain at
50km/h. The Coastal- Burwood
and Papanui-Innes community
boards voted not to lower the
speed limit to 40km/h after
the city council identified
that reducing the limit was
appropriate. The existing school
speed zones will remain in place.
Bringing outer-space to the central city
• By Sophie Cornish
HANNAH BEEHRE has brought
outer-space to the central city.
As part of SCAPE Public Art’s
20th-anniversary season, Beehre’s
display Tunnel hopes to captivate
viewers for the next six weeks.
Nestled deep inside the Canterbury
Museum, the display creates
a walk-through rendering of a
nebula – clouds of gas and dust
from outer space, visible in the
night sky.
It will form the entrance to the
exhibition Wildlife Photographer
of the Year and is expected
to bring 60,000 visitors over the
exhibition period.
It is constructed from dyed silk
velvet with Swarovski crystals,
LED lights and mirrored flooring.
The 41-year-old artist moved
to Christchurch from Auckland
in 1998 to study at Canterbury
University’s School of Fine Arts.
She completed her degree in
2000 but has now returned to
complete a masters degree in
painting.
Beehre says her five-year-old
daughter, Parker, is her biggest
fan.
“She’s really excited about it, she
asked me if we could go through
it holding hands. I feel like I am
making the work for her as well.
So I am excited to see her reaction.
She’s my biggest fan, she’s
really sweet. Sometimes she will
point out: ‘Oh that bit is not right’.’’
Last Friday marked the opening
of SCAPE’s 20th-anniversary season,
the display will be on show
for six weeks.
The trust has installed 216 temporary
artworks and 14 permanent
artworks in the city, since its
formation in 1998.
Some of the most notable works
include Nucleus by Phil Price on
the corners of Manchester, High
and Lichfield streets, Fanfare by
Neil Dawson at Chaneys Corner
and Passing Time by Anton Parsons
on Madras St.
Notable artworks for this season
OUT OF THIS WORLD:
Hannah Beehre with
her art installation
Galaxy of Magic at the
museum.
include a 5.5.m bronze sculpture
Mixed Feelings by British artist
Tony Cragg at Christ’s College,
Kotuku by Sydney artist Caroline
Rothwell in the Botanic Gardens,
also known as the white heron,
and Three Squares Gyratory Variation
Rickey, near the Art’s Centre.
ON DISPLAY: Two more
City woman leads young farmers
Local
News
Now
Fire rages, homes at risk
• By Ashleigh Monk
and Emily O’Connell
TECH-SAVVY businesswoman
Lynda Coppersmith has become
the first female chief executive of
Templeton-based New Zealand
Young Farmers.
Ms Coppersmith, 48, took up
the position on October 1 and
said her first week was “very
busy.”
“I’ve been learning a lot – I’m
at brain-saturation point I think,
but it’s been great to talk to
everybody and understand the
business.”
Ms Coppersmith said she
had been out of the primary
industries for more than six
years, and was pleased to be
back.
“I really enjoyed my time
when I worked in the industry.
It’s something that’s in your
blood, and you get quite passionate
about it,” she said.
“Having grown a few leadership
skills in the meantime, I
thought this looked like a great
opportunity to get back into the
industry.”
She said she was “chuffed” to
be the first woman to hold the
chief executive position at NZ
Young Farmers.
“I think every time we see
more diversity and women
getting more senior roles in organisations,
it’s a win. It brings a
different perspective to what we
do, and I think that’s great.”
She was looking forward to
visiting clubs and drumming
up interest in farming for young
people.
“I’m keen to understand
who young farmers are, what’s
important to them, what they’re
worried about, what they’re
excited about and that kind of
thing,” she said.
“I think that’s a really important
role that we play, and I can
see there are opportunities to
grow that further, to look at filling
that gap and meet the target
of getting an extra 50,000 people
into the industry.”
Ms Coppersmith was
completing a Master of Business
Harewood and
intersection,
or to introduce
a signalised
crossing to
Aaron Keown
Harewood Rd
and reduce it to
one lane.
Cr Keown has been campaigning
to have lights installed at the
Breens, Harewood and Gardiners
Rds intersection for two-anda-half
years.
“It goes out for consultation
now, but the preferred option for
council is cutting off Harewood
Rd – they’re basically just going
to try and talk people out of
choosing the traffic lights.”
He said he felt confident that
the majority of submissions
would be in favour of the traffic
lights, but he expected the
city council to try and slow the
process.
“The problem is it won’t just
go to the community board and
then to council, as is the normal
process. It will also have to go
to the Infrastructure, Transport
and Environment Committee.
It’s just another chance for the
council to block it.”
While the majority of city
councillors voted for the proposal,
Cr Keown said he was
“disappointed” that councillors
Tim Scandrett, Pauline Cotter
and Phil Clearwater were against
it.
“That’s how dirty politics operates,
sometimes you just can’t get
wins with certain people.”
He said the opposed councillors
focused on the lack of available
funding for traffic lights, but
he was sure the money could be
found in the Annual Plan.
“I think people will come forward
and say ‘don’t spend money
on stupid statues or a park or a
swimming pool, we want it spent
on traffic lights’,” he said.
“To be honest, with the cost
of the council blocking this
project we would have probably
already paid for the traffic lights.
Christchurch ratepayers are being
ripped off by staff tactics and
Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community
Board chairman Sam
city council would listen to what
the public wanted.
“The council now have bought
into the process of letting the
public tell them what they want
at this intersection, so for them
at the end of this to block it
would be completely unacceptable,”
he said.
that this intersection is going to
Trees trimmed at
Ronald McDonald House
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
SCRUFFY TREES surrounding
the city’s Ronald McDonald
House have been tidied up.
Beaver Tree Service Ltd
donated their time and skills
recently to help trim trees, along
with removing deadwood and
hazardous branches from around
the building.
The company brought smiles
to children at the house with lead
arborist David McKeich climbing
the trees in a beaver suit.
Office manager Belinda Henderson
said it decided to do the
work free of charge after Ronald
McDonald phoned up asking for
a quote to have their trees tidied.
“It means it doesn’t come out of
their budget, they can use it for
something else,” she said.
Beaver also supports social
enterprise and non-profit organisation
B1G1 which helps feed impoverished
children throughout
New Zealand.
In about 2013 the company
sponsored a room at Ronald Mc-
Donald which allowed families to
stay for free.
Feedback sought
on club expansion
FEEDBACK IS being sought on
a proposal to make changes to
the Canterbury Regional Policy
Statement and Christchurch
District Plan to allow further
development at the Christchurch
Football Centre site in Yaldhurst.
The proposal has been prepared
by the city council and seeks
to use section 71 of the Greater
Christchurch Regeneration Act to
make the planning changes needed
in order for Canterbury Sports
Ltd, which owns the football
centre, to expand its operation.
CSL wants to add a gymnastics
centre, an indoor sports stadium
with multiple courts for sports
such as netball, basketball and futsal,
a swimming pool with diving
and triathlon facilities and outdoor
fields or courts for sports such as
athletics, hockey, tennis and rugby.
These facilities are defined as
‘urban activity’ in the CRPS, as
they predominantly serve the
urban population.
However, the site is just outside
the urban boundary in the CRPS.
This means certain policy and
land zoning changes to the CRPS
and CDP are necessary to enable
the proposed developments to
happen. Using section 71 would
enable these changes to be made
in a single process.
All submissions must be
received by 5pm, November 5.
65-year-old pulled out of burning home
• By Sophie Cornish
A SYDENHAM woman has
spoken about how she battled
“unbearable heat” when pulling
a 65-year-old neighbour from his
burning home.
It was just after 9am on
September 29 when Bernadine
Worsdale looked out of her
window to
see smoke
billowing from
the property
next door. She
sprinted
outside in her
pyjamas and
Bernadine
Worsdale
saw another
neighbour
running towards
her, who
phoned 111.
“I was focusing on my neighbour
and thinking get him out,”
said Mrs Worsdale.
Mrs Worsdale ran to the front
window of the burning house on
Scott St.
She pulled it ajar before yelling
for her neighbour, who she didn’t
wish to name.
“I think he was sleeping, if I
hadn’t of known his name, he
may have not woken up and
responded . . . it was so intense,
I hate fire, the heat was unbearable.”
He appeared a bit “dazed and
confused,” said Mrs Worsdale
who then helped to pull him out
of the window.
“I tried to get him to jump but
he couldn’t. I pulled him from
under the armpits and dragged
him out of the window.”
Fire investigator Wayne
Hamilton said the fire had been
caused by unattended cooking
while the man was in his
The house did not have working
smoke alarms.
The fire continued to burn for
more than an hour.
Mrs Worsdale said she was
driven by adrenaline to help her
neighbour, who thanked her
profusely.
“It all happened so fast. I am
just so grateful and so pleased
he’s alive . . . I gave him some water,
a blanket and a hug. He was
very confused and shaken up.”
Mr Hamilton said the incident
acts as a timely reminder that
all homes should have working
a house.
This week a team from Fire
Parade funding questioned
• By Julia Evans
WHY THE city’s events agency
is not helping fund the Santa
Parade has been questioned by a
city councillor.
The event isn’t considered
major enough for
ChristchurchNZ to be involved.
It comes as
an additional
$20,000 of
funding to
go towards
the parade’s
rent, rates and
insurance was
approved at the
Loren
Heaphy
city council
meeting on
Thursday.
It is the second time the city
council has given funding to the
parade this financial year – the
first time $65,000 was granted.
However, city councillor Yani
Johanson questioned why it was
footing the bill without input
from ChristchurchNZ.
Last year, the city council’s
events unit was merged with
Christchurch and Canterbury
Tourism and Canterbury Development
Corporation to create
the tourism, events and economic
development agency ChristchurchNZ.
“I just wondered if we’ve actually
approached ChristchurchNZ
which is very keen on attracting
sponsorship to events and are
they providing support? They’ve
got a lot of funding now,” Cr
Johanson said.
City council chief executive
Karleen Edwards said granting
funding was up to the city
council.
“This is more of a community
event, rather than a major
event,” Dr Edwards said.
“We’ve asked ChristchurchNZ
to focus on major events in their
statement of intent and this is
not a major event so it falls with
council.”
City council manager events
and arts Karena Finnie said that
falls in line with the new events
policy framework and major
events strategy.
“The Santa Parade is classified
as a regional event which is the
responsibility of Christchurch
City Council,” she said.
Cr Johanson said: “So cricket
POPULAR:
The annual
Christchurch
Santa Parade
draws in
around
100,000
people.
playing rugby guys with about
10,000 people, if they’re lucky,
is in the mandate but this isn’t,
with about 100,000 people. That
seems very odd.”
ChristchurchNZ general manager
destination Loren Heaphy
and attraction said it has not been
approached to support the Santa
Parade.
“If we were approached, we
would consider it alongside all
other events that are looking for
support.”
HEARING HELP IN HORNBY
How is your hearing?
In New Zealand, one in six people have some degree of hearing difficulty.
Over the age of 60, more than half the population are living with a
significant hearing reduction. This invisible condition can be incredibly
frustrating, as conversation on a one to one basis can be no problem, but
social situations become very uncomfortable indeed. Background noise
can make conversation almost impossible to follow causing some
sufferers to remove themselves from the conversation, or even avoid
going to the social function completely.
Other early signs of hearing difficulty are a creeping up of the volume
control on the TV, frequently asking family and friends to repeat
themselves, or accusing people of mumbling when they speak. With
hearing loss recently being linked to the early onset of Dementia in studies
throughout the world, these early signs are not to be ignored.
Hear Again have extensive experience of helping people overcome their
hearing difficulties. From a simple check to see if your ears are blocked
with wax, to the provision and fine tuning of the very latest hearing devices
from the worlds leading hearing aid manufacturers, the friendly team are
here to help, even if you need to be seen on a weekend.
Neil Hardisty, NZAS Audiometrist, has been expertly overcoming hearing
difficulties for residents of Christchurch since 2009. Neil is frequently
praised for his limitless patience, wonderful caring nature and ability to
solve problems which other clinicians have deemed impossible. Neil is
never satisfied until you are. His expertise, coupled with Customer
Service Advisors Christine and Louise with their welcoming, friendly
nature, and the very latest technology make for a winning combination.
Hear Again offer FREE no obligation initial hearing assessments. If you,
or any of your loved ones have noticed any difficulties with your hearing,
this can be quickly and painlessly checked for you at The Hub, 418 Main
South Road, Hornby. If you already have hearing aids from any
manufacturer, we will give them a FREE clean and check to ensure they
are in tip top condition. Call 03 974 1658 to book your free check.
We look forward to delighting you with our service and help you, or your
loved ones make the most of your hearing and to rejoin the conversation.
News
Now
Age is no barrier to city cycling
Fire rages, homes at risk
EACH DAY in Christchurch
thousands of people use bicycles
for their commute, for fitness,
or just for fun. An increasing
number of those people are of
advancing years.
St Albans retiree Jean Bell
returned to cycling last year after
a long period without a bike. “I
was encouraged to try an e-bike,
and I was soon hooked on it,”
she said.
“It’s just so handy,” Jean explained.
“I’m surprised by how far I can
cycle when in the car the same
distance feels like a long way.’’
Visiting friends, attending
meetings, hairdresser and doctor
appointments – Jean travels to
them all by bike.
“It’s much easier to park my
bike than park the car,” she said.
“Now, driving with just one
person in my car feels decadent;
a bit naughty.”
The city’s geography
lends itself to getting around by
bike.
“Unlike Wellington or Auckland,
in Christchurch you have
a choice – cycle on the flat or
test yourself on the Port Hills,”
explains Julie Milne, who recently
cycled the length of New
Zealand to raise awareness of
stroke sufferers.
Julie rides to work year-round
on her modified bicycle; two
childhood strokes left her with
restricted arm movement.
“Cycling is my physical upkeep,”
she said.
“It improves my quality of getting
older. If I don’t bike, I seize
up, which then means I can’t
bike. So, I keep biking.”
Julie will be sharing her experiences
at the NZ Bike Expo
(Saturday and Sunday).
This cornerstone event of
the Biketober festival is where
cyclists of all ages can gather to
celebrate the cycle.
“The expo brings the cycling
industry and the Christchurch
community together,” said event
organiser Krissy O’Connor.
“It places cycling events, test
rides, and community groups
alongside commercial exhibitors.
It’s a very hands-on weekend of
everything bike-related.”
For Christchurch residents
who perhaps haven’t explored
much of the new-look central
city, Saturday’s Pedal into Spring
extravaganza of Biketober offers
twelve themed, self-guided rides
to choose from. Cafés, shops,
playgrounds, art, a family treasure
hunt – there’s a route for all ages.
“If you haven’t been on a bike
for a while,” says Julie Milne,
“start on a cycleway and go from
there. You’re safe. Cycling is
lovely.”
YOUNG RUGBY fans got the
chance to meet some Canterbury
rugby players.
Chris King, Phil Burleigh
and Hamish Dalzell met and
practiced with the pupils from
Harewood School.
The players greeted the pupils
for a chat and answered their
questions before putting them
through some training drills and
having a game. Burleigh said it
was nice to spend time with the
young fans.
“It was great to meet the
next generation of enthusiastic
young rugby players, to run
through some skills training
with them, and answer questions
they have about what we do,”
Burleigh said.
“This group was really engaged
and keen to learn, so we enjoyed
taking the time out to connect
with them. I hope the knowledge
we passed
on will help them get the
most out of their rugby in the
future.”
The players put the boys
through some training drills,
finishing with a mock game in
which three boys were each put
Big challenge for Villa at nationals
• By Jacob Page
VILLA MARIA College aims to
prove South Island schools can
match it with their North Island
counterparts at the national
secondary schools’ netball
competition.
Villa won the South Island
title for the first time in 10 years
last month but will face a sterner
test at the national competition
which starts today in Timaru
and finishes on Friday.
The team will face Wellington
East Girls’ College, Mount
Albert Grammar and St Hilda’s
Collegiate in pool play.
Coach Helen Mahon-Stroud
said the team is capable of
matching it with any opposition.
“We want the girls to focus on
their performance and not be
overawed by what they come up
against,” she said.
The team has had two training
games against Christchurch
Girls’ High over the past
SPORTS
fortnight. “Obviously, with the
club season being over, we’ve had
to find ways to keep ourselves
mentally stimulated since the
season has gone longer.”
Mahon-Stroud said she
believes her team will have to
adjust to the size and physicality
of the North Island school teams.
Shooter Hannah Glen, midcourter
Georgia Stroud and
defender Olivia Burnham form
the experienced core of the team
and were all named in the South
Island tournament team.
She said the team has been
playing against “seasoned adult
club players” throughout the year
as preparation.
“I think if the team can focus
on their goals and what they
want to achieve, the results will
be favourable,” she said.
“Obviously, this will be a
massive step up for the girls, but
with four of the team leaving and
looking to continue their netball
at a higher level next year, and
for our year 12s, I have no doubt
they all will be better players for
this experience.”
CBHS claim
team time trial
at NZ champs
VICTORY: The CBHS under-20 road cycling team won their national time trial at Loburn.
PHOTO: CYCLING NEW ZEALAND
CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High
upset their rivals to claim the
prestigious Sir Bernard Fegusson
Trophy at the New Zealand
road cycling championships last
week.
The CBHS team won the
trophy by taking out the
under-20 national time trial at
Loburn.
The 51st edition of the
championships drew 601 riders
from 100 schools over the threeday
competition.
As well as the team time
trial, it included road and points
races.
It was the first time the event
has been staged in the South
Island.
CBHS’s Laurence Pithie,
Griffyn Spencer, Josh Rivett,
Logan Currie and Guy Yarrell
crossed the finish line 11sec
ahead of Palmerston North Boys’
High School, with defending
champions Auckland Grammar
School in third.
CBHS teacher and team
manager Gary McNaughton said
the team were motivated to do
well in their home region.
“We went out and rode the
course two weeks ago and felt
confident we could do well. The
guys have given it everything in
their last few training sessions,”
he said.
“We have a few guys peaking
as their final preparation
before representing New
Zealand at the Oceania track
championships in Adelaide
which start (tomorrow).”
