72 Hours in

Shanghai

By Eden Morales of UncoveringEden.com

Technically I was in Shanghai for eight days

but since five days of which were dedicated to

attending seminars, I only had 3 days to roam

around this vast and modern metropolis.

Our office is located at Shanghai Tower—the

tallest in Shanghai and second in the world.

Spending winter here can be a little bit brutal.

One moment there will be a glimpse of sunlight

and the next can be freezing cold. I suggest

for you to always check the weather online to

know which clothes to pack.

Shanghai Skyline

A few blocks away from The Bund is West Nanjing Road, which is

a long walk of various branded clothing labels, gadgets and street

foods.

DiDi App

For the entirety of our Shanghai

trip we used an app called Didi

— their own version of Grab and

Uber. It helped us to get in and

out of different districts in no

time. For five consecutive days,

I had the pleasure of seeing the

heart of their commercial district

— walking below the towering

buildings of Jin Mao Tower,

Orient Pearl Tower and Shanghai

World Financial Center. But the

last 72 hours were jam-packed

with everything we can fit in this

“business” trip.

We commenced our trip with a ferry ride to Shanghai’s worldfamous,

The Bund. A long stretch of buildings that are influenced

with European architecture. Opposite to it is Shanghai’s breathtaking

skyline. I stood for about an hour just trying to get that perfect shot

but I guess some beauty can’t be translated into photographs. They’re

more worthy to be seen in person.

West Nanjing Road

The next day, I intended to go around a few more spots in Shanghai.

If you’re looking for a place of cheap finds and restaurants,

Chinatown is the perfect spot for you. Yuyuan Garden, on the other

hand, is a serene place nestled in the middle of busy and narrow

streets filled with frantic tourists.

The Bund

Chinatown

Then we took a ride to Tianzifang, a former French Concession area

now reformed with narrow alleys with numerous quaint and artsy

shops, cafes and bars.

China Art Museum

Tianzifang

We ate lunch at Marzano, situated in yet another go-to place for food

and bar in Shanghai, Xintiandi. It is said to be the most expensive

place to live in China. Some of the apartments are costing more than

those in Tokyo, London and even New York City.

Shanghai Tower’s 119th floor has a 360-degree view of the megacity.

I was shaking the whole time we were up there. Fun fact, I am not

afraid of heights. It must be because of the excitement I am feeling

as I roam around, running in circles, trying to get all the shots I need.

Everything from above is heavenly. Yes, the smog is quite thick, but to

me, it added that mystery. Like Shanghai is there in front of me, but it

still holds a secret I badly wanna know.

After that sumptuous meal, we rode another cab to reach Shanghai

Museum, located at the People’s Square in Huangpu District. It

exhibits ancient Chinese art and is considered as one of China’s most

modern museums. We found time to actually sit down at the square,

let the world move beneath our feet and just watched Shanghai

create its magic.

Shanghai Museum

Our last day in Shanghai was a little bit hectic. Our flight is in the

afternoon but we still had a few stops before we leave. One of which

is the China Art Museum. This attraction is actually quite far from

the city center but the view up close is just spectacular. The majestic

building boasts pearl-white, concrete staircase and on top is an

abstract pattern of crimson-painted wood, stacked like an inverted

pyramid. I was not actually able to go in because the line is crazy long

and it would eat up so much time so we decided to go to our final

destination, Shanghai Tower. This is where our trip started and it’s

just right to end it here, as well.

View of Orient Pearl TV Tower from Shanghai Tower

Shanghai surprised me in a very good way. The weather might be

hella unstable but the experience is still topnotch. I get to see a

different side of its people, how they value their culture and how

amazing their city is. Shanghai is an underrated destination that

people should start to be raving about. n

Yeah! Yeah!

Chinese Cuisine

By Lara Toldanes

It is undeniable that the Filipinos have a soft spot

for the Chinese cuisine. How many times you saw

a social media friend posts about their cravings for

siomai? Too many to count right? One can’t help

but crave Chinese food. There’s mami, siopao, and

hopia, among other food that the Chinese have

brought into our daily lives. Filipinos will not go by

without eating these sumptuous meals.

And if you are looking for a Chinese Cuisine to

feed your cravings, Yeah! Yeah! Chinese Cuisine is

the place to be, located at Hemady Square, New

Manila, Quezon City.

Yeah! Yeah! Chinese Cuisine opened their doors

three months ago, albeit new, they are already

visited by a number of customers daily.

A taste of authentic Chinese Cuisine prepared by

Chinese chefs, this is what makes the authenticity

of Yeah! Yeah! Chinese Cuisine’s menu. Each dish

comes in a generous serving portion that just sit

right with the Filipino’s eating capacity.

Their bestsellers are Hakaw, Walnut Bun, and

Piggy Bun. Not only mouth-watering, but they are

really flavorful and savory. If you love prawns, you

will definitely enjoy Hakaw. Two prawns wrapped

in a dumpling wrapper. Even without dip, Hakaw

has its own delectable taste. Who would have

thought that prawns will go with ripe mangoes in

a salad? Doused with sweet sauce, Prawn Salad

will tickle your taste buds, which makes it more

tastefully compelling.

If you love chicken, Hong Kong White Chicken

and Slice Chix with Black Mushroom Pot is

the one for you. Hong Kong White Chicken is a

new addition to Yeah! Yeah! Chinese Cuisine’s

flavorsome menu. The chicken slices are tender

and appetizing, teasing in a generous serving.

The Walnut Bun and the Instagramable Piggy Bun

oozes with sweet filling that is good for dessert.

The piggy bun has a sweetened egg yolk filling

that’s not too sweet but gives the right amount of

dulcet taste.

With its warm, minimalist yet elegant interior and

cheerful servers, you will surely enjoy your time in

Yeah! Yeah! Chinese Cuisine. n

YSA Skin & Body Experts

Shine Bright!

Skin Lightening Trio

By Lord Harvey Monteroso

eople say that beauty is skin-deep. However,

contemporaries believe that in order for true

P beauty to shine, one must learn how to take care

of themselves from within. Not many have the luxury

to follow a strict beauty regimen.

Thus, YSA Skin and Body Experts have found a way

to provide its clients with a better option. From their

laboratories and experts who continue to experiment

and to upgrade techniques for holistic skin care, YSA

proves that they definitely know what they’re doing.

Since skin care is unique for every person, YSA

has formulated four new sheet masks that cater

specifically to an individual’s needs. These sheet

masks have then been incorporated to a 3-in-1

procedure that would surely leave one’s face feeling

rejuvenated and fresh.

Before any procedure, trained skin advisers assess

the client’s skin type. This is done to make sure which

mask is to be used. YSA believes that in order to get

the best results, one must know what needs to be

looked into. They not only want to know your skin,

they want to know how your skin works and how it

must be treated. Sana all.

A facial with a rejuvenating clay mask is given to

cleanse the skin from accumulated dirt. It helps soften

the face pre-procedure and allows for easy extraction.

The facial takes about 30 to 45 minutes depending

on the skin type. However, the skin experts would

be thorough and you bet your open pores they’d be

cleaned and closed after this.

Once blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples have

been targeted, Intense Diamond Peeling is done to

rid the top layer of the skin of dead cells. This allows

for a more lightened look with tighter pores. Diamond

Peeling is non-abrasive and does not hurt at all. It

simply takes the old skin off to make the young and

subtle skin come out.

Last but not the least is the sheet mask. The

sheet mask has been formulated using a special

Compound K Ginseng with active components called

ginsenosides, which are known for wound healing

and anti-inflammation. They are also anti-oxidants

and fight off skin ageing. Because skin care is truly a

unique experience, YSA has created four variances

that would specifically cater to four different skin

types. Aloe Vera to sooth dry and damaged skin;

Green Tea for anti-acne and anti-inflammation; Lemon

for natural whitening; and Collagen for anti-ageing,

skin elasticity, and hydration.

According to Glades Eleanor N. Sison, the former YSA

BGC branch supervisor of 5 years and current YSA

Operations Manager, with each variance, YSA has

made sure that the skin is uniquely and thoroughly

well taken care of. Results are instant and in the long

run with proper management, skin will be beautiful

inside and out.

The entire Skin Lightening Trio procedure takes about

an hour and a half. Contact your nearest YSA Skin and

Body Experts branch for further inquiries. Schedule

your appointment now and get the best from

the best. n

MYA, Hallyu Secret launch PH office;

recognize K-Beauty Olympics winners

Mi-Yong Alliance (MYA), the country’s pioneer Korean

Beauty Academy recently held the grand opening of

its new office in Greenhills, San Juan City. Since 2016,

MYA consistently introduces Korean skin care courses to

Filipino clients, embarking a new milestone in beauty and

cosmetics industry.

With their skin care innovations, start-up entrepreneurs

and established beauty clinic owners enroll to MYA, who

are planning to add the unique techniques and standards

to their list of services. Surprisingly, in just short span of

time, MYA already built a reputation within the industry,

acquiring students from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Certainly, Korean skin care has found its new home in

Greenhills.

Mi-Yong Alliance, Korea Chairman, Mr. Raphael Jang

welcomed the guests and media with his inspiring speech,

sharing the journey of MYA along with its Korean skin care

clinic, Hallyu Secret Aesthetics. According to him, the past

two years have been tough and challenging however, they

managed to stay firm with their passion and dedication.

"This all started with our hope to share quality skills and

the latest trends to Filipinos. Our journey for the last 2 years

was not easy. Kris and I would always fight about many

things, there were a lot of times that we wanted to stop

working and give-up. But as we make classes, batch after

batch, there is a growing obligation and responsibility to

our clients whom we consider our children in the industry.

We could not stop aiming the best for them that why we

keep giving opportunities to people grow with us as well.

Some examples are our instructor course programs and

K-Beauty Olympics. We know that this kind of programs will

totally change their future," Chairman Jang pronounced.

Philippine CEO Kris Candyd Sibal introduces Hallyu

Secret Aesthetics treatments, which finely cater wide

range of solutions for every customer. Some of their

advanced skin care services like BB Glow and XY Blush,

Gold Therapy and Secret Semi-Permanent Mascara were

discussed during the program.

"MYA has successfully made a reputation as the Korean

Beauty Academy who consistently bring 'first in the

Philippines' beauty treatments. This is made true by

the Korean style permanent make-up, BB Glow and

Semi-Permanent Mascara which are widely available to

many salons, clinics and skin care center today. Hallyu

Secret’s system was adopted from a famous beauty center

in Gangnam, Seoul named Pretty Face Clinic where in

Chairman Jang is also one of the directors of the said

clinic," PCEO Sibal shared.

Well-known for permanent make-up (PMU) techniques,

MYA’s head instructor Ms. LK Park enlightened guests and

media about their various services.

"I am LK Park, I am here now in Philippines with a mission

to spread quality skills among the Filipino PMU specialists.

There are a lot of wrong cases in Philippines, a lot of clients

go to us for correction of their brows. This is what our

academy is famous for after all. PMU has evolved through

time, today it doesn’t only focus on the brows, eyeline

and lips, it became a procedure now for those who have

scars, bald scalp, and those with dark areolas. It became

a solution to cover-up the insecurities of people. Here at

Hallyu Secret all these kinds of PMU services are available.

From making your brows on fleek up to coveing the

baldness of your head," she stated.

At the latter part of the event, MYA awarded plaques

The M Residences at

Mahogany III:

The Metropolitan House Designed For You

The M Residences at Mahogany III is the latest and final

installment of the Mahogany series by VConsuji Group. The

M Residences at The Mahogany III offers you the exclusivity,

security, and opulence of a premier subdivision minus the

intimidating atmosphere and the hefty price tag.

The M Residences is not just an address homeowners can

take pride in, it’s a community where they can build lasting

connections with neighbors, friends, and family.

The M Residences is not just a collection of well-designed

structures that have considered architectural strategies and

utilized sustainable materials, it is a collection of homes built to

evolve with its owners.

No More Compromises with Living Spaces

“Everyone’s stuck between choosing house sizes, travel time,

and of course, cost. What this development addresses the

need for a bigger space at an affordable price,” shares CEO

Engineer Vic Consuji on The M Residences. “Even if you do get

a three-bedroom condo at an astronomical price, where do you

park your car? If you family gets bigger, you can’t expand that

unit, you have to buy another unit. The M Residences allows

people to have a terrific house that’s accessible to all the places

you would go to. No one has to sacrifice the convenience of

the location and neither do you have to subject your family to a

small living space.”

TRAVEL• LIFESTYLE• ENTERTAINMENT

COMFORT

“The running joke is that our condo doors are higher than

most condo ceilings,” Vic jokes. “We’re not limited by high rise

construction limitations, you can have really big clearances,

beautifully dropped ceilings, better air circulation.” With 180

to 400 square meter properties, the spaces were maximized

and the designs were strategized to provide the best living

conditions for its future owners.

The inspiration behind the design was drawn mostly from Vic’s

travels and life experiences both as a family man and engineer.

The blueprint of the houses were made to bringing a family

together. The living spaces have enough space for an intimate

family dinner or even to entertain friends over the weekend,

while still providing ample space for each member to have

privacy.

DESIGN

Sustainability is at the core of each VConsuji Group . Window

and vent placements were thoroughly planned to let natural

light in and keep the constant tropical heat of Manila out. Unlike

most townhouses, each house at The M Residences have a

patch of greenery that literally incorporates the outside in. “We

did those glass areas for cross ventilation and light. We wanted

to maximize the space but also push in the maximum amount of

light while keeping the whole house airy,” points out Vic.

The houses at The M Residences is not a collection of piedà-terres.

The houses are built to last any storm, evolve with

its owners, and be passed on as an heirloom. Materials were

sourced from top suppliers, the design was created by awardwinning

architects, and constructed by contractors with over

60 years of experience.

The house design also features strong, clean lines and a

homage to Modern Tropical Architecture. The strong lines

and stark monochrome exterior palette is softened by the

wooden tiles. “We eliminated natural wood from our designs

for environmental and safety reasons. The houses are very fire

retardant and termite-proof!” Vic laughs.

SAFETY

The structural blueprint of The M Residences are actually built

on foundations that can support four-storey homes, despite

the units coming in two to three floors. “We’ve done this for

two reasons. One, while we have complete confidence in the

quality our team creates, a lot people are concerned about

earthquakes. We wanted to assure them that these houses are

extremely safe. And also, if the family decides that they need

an extra room in the future they can literally build another floor

without worrying about the structural integrity and stability of

the house.” This allows the main architecture of the house to

evolve with its owners, a big plus with a real-estate market that

usually sells bland and cramped cookie-cutter spaces.

LOCATION

A short drive away from the bustle of Bonifacio Global City and

the hustle of Makati’s Central Business District, you’re never too

far away to enjoy the city’s on-the-go lifestyle yet neither are

you too near to get burned out by it. Located inside The Acacia

Estates, expect top security services to keep your home and

family safe.

With a pioneer property in The Acacia Estates, The M

Residences will be soon popping up in other locations in the

north of Metro Manila and even the Queen City of the South.

VConsuji Group X Casa Consuji

The showrooms of The M Residences were crafted by

Maggie Wilson-Consuji. “It’s our first collaboration as a

working couple,” shares Maggie. The houses are designed to

compliment the Modern Tropical exterior Vic and his team

made. While people might think that it was only natural for

Maggie to do the interiors with two years of design school

under her belt, she admits that she was terrified to say yes to

the project. “I worked on designing our home but it’s always

different if other people are going to see it. But to design for

other people is scary but exciting.”

The home designer shares that her design philosophy is that

“homes should be a place where you wouldn’t want to leave

home. It should look like a resort or a hotel that you can get

away to everyday.” This guided her in crafting model units

for the property. Her signature style of Modern Tropical is

evident with the wicker furniture and palm tree print accents.

While keeping with her personal design preference, Maggie

made sure that she also crafted the spaces to have different

personalities so a wider market can appreciate the versatility of

Vic’s architectural design.

A majority of the pieces in the showrooms were personally

curated and source by Maggie from exotic markets in Bali to

local artisan furniture suppliers. A lot of the pieces on display

will be available on Casa Consuji, a furniture shop and interior

design studio for the modern Filipino homemakers.

turn over is after one (1) year. For buyer inquiries, phone +632 856

kingdom. Being Danaya in the hit

remake of 2005’s Encantadia last

2016 was the tipping point of a

long and exciting career. Despite

having big shoes to fill in, she says

she had fun doing the role as it

was a childhood dream come true.

It’s in the show that she became a

revelation; people have unanimously

praised her for her superb acting.

Sanya humbly explains that her

co-actors have been a great support

system for her growth. She feels

honored to have worked with the

best. We, in turn, feel honored

to have seen her growing to an

excellent actress.

With both feet on the ground, the

enchanting actress believes that

despite all the praises she receieved,

she never stops to better her craft.

With eagerness to learn, she tries

to improve her self and her skills,

and at the same time she still listens

to every advice she gets from her

colleagues.

Pink had a good run last season.

This year, the color wheel took an

unexpected turn with its fashion trends.

Taking on two opposing colors: one, bright

and carefree, and the other, mysterious

and sultry. It’s been splashing its way by the

end of 2017 and we never saw it coming!

From A-listers, runways, to street style

scenes, our radar is on the lookout for the

Millennial Yellow and Ultraviolet.

Who said summer is over? With

yellow, it sure is not.

Dubbed as Gen-Z Yellow by Man

Repeller, or Millennial Yellow as we’d

like to call it (goodbye, millennial

pink), it is a surprising cross between

marigold and mustard. The youth

influence is quite strong on this one

wanting to be unique and radiating

with positivity that resonates from

growing up in this confusing times.

We’ve even got Beyonce to thank for

it too! After headlining as the first

black woman to perform in Coachella,

her yellow Balmain hoodie was

everything.

If you find the color a bit glaring for

your taste, you can slowly ease your

way into it by adding some yellow in

your ensemble like a pair of sunnies

or shoes to make it pop. In this way,

you can bring attention to your outfit

without it being too overpowering. A

perfect Insta-bait!

Pantone has named Ultraviolet, a daring shade

of purple, as the Color of the Year. According

to them, this communicates “originality, ingenuity,

and visionary thinking”. It stands for discovery,

limitlessness, and spiritual reflection.

This 80’s hue is definitely making a huge comeback.

Undeniably so, this complex color has been seen

gracing this year’s Spring collection of Gucci together

with Balenciaga and Moschino.

Unlikely trendsetters, like the Queen of England and

Princess Diana, have also been sporting this retro color

long before.

For those faint of heart, who are too afraid to commit

to this shade, can opt for a subtler hue to fit their

style—such as pastel lavender.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The Millennial Yellow and Ultraviolet may

seem to be bold and eccentric choices, but

they’re perfect for the avant-garde youth of

of this color in fashion has finally become a

Jennifer Garner shows gory

details in “Peppermint”

By Lord Harvey Monteroso

H

ell hath no fury like a mother scorned. And

for Peppermint, all hell indeed broke loose on

everyone who wronged Jennifer Garner.

Riley North (played by Garner) is a simple Los Angeles

housewife who juggles work at a bank and time for

her family. However, after her husband and daughter

have been gunned down by the orders of a drug

cartel leader, things take to an extreme turn as Riley

transforms into a criminal vigilante out for blood.

Directed by Pierre Morel (the same guy who brought

us Taken; yes, the one with Liam Neeson), Peppermint

is a revenge thriller that shows us that when pushed

too much, mothers can go to wild lengths for their

family. Moreover, the highlight of it all is that we finally

get to see Garner back in this genre. Before her sweet

and charming, motherly roles she’s known for in recent

years, she was well adept as a CIA officer in the hit

action-drama TV show Alias. She even played assassin

Elektra in two separate comic book movies. Seeing her

now all bloodied up and ruthless is such a joy. Garner

basically plays two different people in Peppermint

and you’d be surprised if such character development

could ever work in real life.

Despite having a generic plot cut from the same mold

of most revenge thriller flicks, Peppermint still delivers

all the heart-pumping stops that keep you at your

seat’s edge from start to finish. Although, the story

fails to directly address how an average housewife

learned how to train and become a straight up fighter

slash assassin slash torturer, an important scene shows

she’d been able to travel to Asia and Europe using

aliases after stealing from the bank she’d worked for.

In short, you’re basically left to be creative in thinking

up ways to fill up all the gaps. However, it is hinted

that her character may have suffered a great deal of

shock, which could have led to the hallucinations she’d

been getting. It still isn’t reason enough for her to be

good at keeping of the grid for five years (yes, that’s

the time frame the movie makers decided it could take

for her to become an assassin).

Overall, Peppermint isn’t particularly bad but it sure

isn’t that great. When compared to Director Morel’s

other franchise, this movie is a far cry from Taken’s

superb character building. There is enough action

to get hooked but it shies away from the blood bath

of John Wick. There is sass but less personality like

Atomic Blonde. You get enough story to sympathize

with Riley North (Jennifer Garner with military grade

guns is honestly the only redeeming factor). It sort

of gets the job done but lacks the right kind of jab to

make it memorable. The entire thing is still enjoyable

if you want to get your mind off the long, busy week

you’ve been having.
