Appreciation for Mallinckrodt evident at annual party
Alexa Burnell
Freelance Reporter
While Mallinckrodt
Park is usually a serene,
quite venue, the park became
one of the most happening
places to be last
month during the annual
members appreciation party,
where live music, good
food and good times kept
the party going all evening
long.
Julie Mantice, Mallinckrodt
manager, explained
that the event is a way for
the Wilmette Park District
to show appreciation for
all Mallinckrodt members
who participate in the
many programs offered
for the 50 and over crowd,
around town.
“Our members are our
family and we appreciate
their growing interested
in the many opportunities
that we offer,” Mantice
said. “Their involvement
encourages us to keep
adding new programs
and adventures, making
Mallinckrodt the community
enriching center we
hope for it to be.”
The event was underwritten
by Salome Jackson,
founder of Shalom
at Home, an organization
that pairs seniors with the
perfect caregiver, so folks
don’t have to leave their
homes. She mingled with
guests, amazed to hear
about the adventures so
many have taken advantage
of.
“I’ve worked with many
senior centers, but I have
to say, I’m blown away
at what Mallinckrodt offers
their members. The
opportunities are endless
and make everyone feel
included, accepted and
engaged. I’m proud to
sponsor the event tonight,”
Jackson said.
Jackson also brought
with her the Rue Street
Band, who played a variety
of tunes, getting folks
dancing and having a wonderful
time. Mallinckrodt
members, Regina Lee,
Elaine Fischer and Andi
Kosla, sat together, listening
to the music and recalling
all the wonderful
experiences they have had,
thanks to Mallinckrodt offerings
.
“We all love Zumba,
and we’ve attended many
of the performances
Mallinckrodt offers too,”
Fischer said. “Really, there
is something for everyone,
and always something to
do, which I really appreciate.”
Lee shared that she
once attended the school
that once existed where
Mallinckrodt sits today,
grateful to be back and
enjoying every benefit the
membership offers, particularly
the fitness.
“I take a strength and
conditioning class among
others and I will tell you
they are better than any
physical therapy program
I’ve participated in. The
instructors are great, and I
feel better than ever,” Lee
said.
So, what does it take to
become a Mallinckrodt
member? The answer is
simple — all it takes is to
be 50+ and a small fee of
$42 per year, and suddenly,
one will have access to
discounted fitness classes,
trips to the city, visits to
a variety of restaurants,
travel, new friends and
most importantly, a community.
From the Village
Leaf collection began Oct.
15
The Village’s popular
leaf collection program
began Monday, Oct. 15
and runs through Dec. 7,
weather permitting. Residents
who live on residential
side streets are asked
to rake leaves to the curb.
Please avoid raking leaves
onto the street until two
days prior to your scheduled
collection day to prevent
the clogging of storm
drains. Residents who live
on arterial streets (Lake
Avenue, Wilmette Avenue,
Sheridan Road, Green Bay
Road, Ridge Road, Skokie
Boulevard, and Hibbard
Road) should place leaves
on the parkway behind the
curb, not in the street, due
to heavy traffic.
Leaves must be in a
loose condition, not in
bags or containers, for collection.
Leaves should be
piled directly in front of
your home, taking care not
to block access to driveways
and fire hydrants.
Street parking will be
prohibited on scheduled
leaf collection days. “No-
Parking” signs will be
posted on each block with
applicable collection dates.
Leaf piles blocked by vehicles
will be skipped, and
the vehicle will be ticketed.
Success of the leaf program
relies on residents’
understanding and support
of parking restrictions.
schedule, visit www.
Halloween Trick-or-Treat
Halloween Trick or
Treat hours are from 4 – 8
p.m. on Wednesday, October
31. The Wilmette Police
Department offers the
following tips for a safe
and spooky Halloween:
• Children should only
go to homes where parents
know the residents.
• Stay on the porch
or front steps to receive
treats.
• Children should cross
the street at the intersection,
not in the middle
of the street or between
parked cars.
• Adults should inspect
all candy before it is eaten.
• Costumes should allow
the child to see and hear
perfectly. Little ghosts and
goblins should be able to
hear and see vehicles.
• Costumes should be
bright colored or have
glow in-the-dark patches
so drivers can see the children.
Flashlights and glow
sticks can help!
• Go with the kids! It’s
safer for them.
