THANDAINJA Currently the socio-eco-political situation we are faced with in South Africa means that much of the corporate funding that is made available is channelled toward the human aspect of welfare while crucial animal welfare is either ignored or neglected, despite these two community aspects being inter-related and co-dependent. Companies are currently not awarded BEE points for investing in communities for animal welfare and it is difficult to reconcile this without asking these same companies to address this issue on a moral and ethical basis. The triple bottom line of profits, people and planet leaves little room for resources to be funneled towards animal welfare as a vital part of community upliftment. But by partnering with Thanda Inja (which means Love Dogs) you will be ensuring a win-win position for both stakeholders and the communities that Thanda Inja will operate in. We have considered the fact that the Gauteng Spatial Development Framework 2030 estimates that ”another 7.8 million people will be living in South African cities in 2030 and a further 6 million by 2050” creating further pressure on municipalities to deliver services to these communities. A large portion of new urban residents will be poor, reflecting a phenomenon referred to as the urbanisation of poverty. Urbanisation could fuel major societal and political upheaval and turmoil, or it could be the catalyst for significant economic and social development and transformation. To move from a negative to a positive scenario, cities need to become the drivers of rapid, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, as well as societal and spatial transformation.
