A Day in the Life
“Appreciation has the power to uplift, transform, and inspire others.
You must learn to receive appreciation as freely as you give it.”
Andrea’s Story:
Each day I am asked, “How do you like your new job?” My answer is not what Andrea would
typically say. I am usually very positive; however, I keep responding with, “I am really
struggling,” or “I am not sure why they chose me for this job.”
For the past fifteen years, I have felt successful as an educator. This is the first time in fifteen
years that I question my ability each and every day. Even when colleagues tell me, “You are
the right person…” I respond with a “Thanks, but….”
Although I always strive to uplift and inspire others, I am not following my own
advice/actions. I truly need to reflect and refocus my response. I am not being a positive role
model or colleague when I use negative self-talk. Now that I have admitted my shortcoming,
I will work harder to overcome my negativity.
Principle #3 Appreciation
Principle #3 states that you should “...model and receive appreciation as freely as you give it
to others.” Reflecting on this quote helps me to see that I am not truly being a mentor when I
model negativity. I found myself putting myself down twice today at work. If I am going to be
REAL, it probably has a lot to do with my childhood. When you are overweight, and
constantly teased, it can leave marks inside that are hidden from others. I need to love
myself and treat myself with the same positivity and love that I share with others each and
every day.
Talk to Me:
"Alicia, I am trying to balance my new job and focus on
showing appreciation to myself and others.
What are you trying to balance?
