Issue 284

October 2018

Hello

Welcome to this issue of The Garage.

AIMS

The new

solution for

surcharge

management

Welcome to this issue of The Garage

WITH the leaves falling and

Autumn well and truly with

us, it’s not long before Winter

arrives, and with it a more

demanding time for our cars.

Darker mornings and evenings, falling

temperatures, dirty roads – it all means

our cars have to work harder, and cars that

aren’t prepared are more likely to be less

reliable but, more importantly, less safe.

Now is the time garages should be encouraging

drivers to have their cars checked

over before Winter arrives. In the past cars

needed a winter service that saw the oil being

changed and the coolant replaced by

old-fashioned anti-freeze: today, with extended

service intervals motorists probably

don’t give much thought to having their car

checked over.

That means it’s down to you to offer a Winter

check. And from it might come reasonable

profit-making: from replacement light

bulbs and wiper blades to selling a set of

winter tyres, there’s plenty of income to be

made, providing you’re willing to push the

Winter check.

This issue meets winter head-on, looking

at Winter Servicing and Winter Tyres.

Winter Servicing offers you many opportunities

but it is important you embrace

them, whether it is simply replacing a set

of wiper blades or a headlight bulb, or regassing

the car’s air-conditioning system

and fitting a new cabin filter.

Wise workshops will also be gearing up

to sell Winter tyres: Yes, in the past almost

all British drivers have given them the cold

shoulder, but this year’s harsh winter might

have made more motorists re-think that

attitude.

Quite how Winter turns out is anyone’s

guess, but the one thing workshops

shouldn’t be doing is giving Winter the cold

shoulder.

Enjoy the issue!

NEW AUTOMOTIVE TECH CHALLENGE

HELPS SHAPE FUTURE OF MOBILITY

NEARLY 50 exciting

new players from

the technology sector

came together

with five of the

world’s leading motor industry

brands today, in a major

new cross-industry initiative

to help shape the future of

transport and mobility. The

Society of Motor Manufacturers

and Traders‘ (SMMT)

Future Mobility Challenge,

held this year at Plexal Innovation

Centre at Here East, is

designed to drive cross-sector

collaboration and could

result in new partnerships,

routes to market, investments

and acquisitions between

automotive companies

and innovative technology

start-ups and SMEs.

The 49 ambitious start-ups

and SMEs were shortlisted

from 94 Challenge entries

and invited to pitch innovative

mobility solutions to

some of the biggest names in

the automotive sector - BMW,

Jaguar Land Rover, Bosch,

Ford and Toyota. From data

solutions to digital applications

for shared mobility,

fleets and new subscription

models, and from new cyber

security solutions to AI in

future vehicles, some of the

innovations pitched today

could one day redefine the future

of mobility and, indeed,

the automotive sector.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief

Executive, said, “SMMT’s

first Future Mobility Challenge

provides the perfect

opportunity for automotive

industry leaders and innovative

technology SMEs to collaborate.

From future vehicle

technologies and innovative

connected car services, to intelligent

data tools and cyber

security solutions, innovators

from across the country

are presenting technology

advancements that could

help shape the future the

industry in the UK. The challenges

facing the automotive

sector are significant but exciting

and it’s clear that innovation

will be key. We want to

encourage the brightest and

the best to be part of that future,

one that will define the

future of mobility.”

Jesse Norman, Future of

Mobility Minister, said, “We

are on the cusp of an exciting

and profound change in how

people, goods and services

move around the country.

The UK can become a global

leader in this coming transport

revolution.”

During the sessions, start-ups and

SMEs pitched solutions to seven

key innovation opportunities:

1. Harnessing the potential of mobility data – creating

customer value through, for example, seamless payments

at fuel forecourts and chargepoints or integrated insurance

services.

2. Intelligent solutions for intelligent fleets – innovative

solutions that go beyond existing telematics offerings,

potentially helping operators to optimise fleets, reduce their

environmental footprint or support drivers’ wellbeing.

3. Urban mobility solutions for future cities – smart use of

data to help tackle challenges such as congestion, parking

and EV charging infrastructure constraints, or deliver

integrated propositions to promote active mobility.

4. Innovative shared and on-demand mobility models –

solutions to identify and deliver new, flexible models of car

ownership or sharing via a single platform to bring mobility

to more people.

5. Creating new and superior customer experiences in the

age of hyper convenience – using augmented or virtual

reality and remote services or blockchain solutions to

deliver efficient business processes and premium and

lifestyle customer propositions.

6. New connected car services – unique solutions to

unlock greater potential from connectivity such as location

services, journey management or remote services

including, for example, predictive maintenance.

7. Future vehicle technologies – new solutions for

everything from artificial intelligence and machine learning,

to automated driving, glass and display technologies, audio,

and battery management.

Padtech releases new

pads for Jaguar and Audi

AUTOPARTS UK has introduced more new brake pad references

under the established Padtech brand, offering customers

expanded vehicle parc coverage.

The five new front and rear pads cover a selection of the

world’s top marques for both passenger and light commercial

vehicles, including the Jaguar XJ (X351) 2015, Audi A4 2015,

Mazda MX-5 2015, Renault Clio 2015 and Ford Transit Connect

2013.

Padtech is one of the UK’s fastest growing brake-pad brands,

manufactured in the UK to OEM specifications and fully compliant

with ECE-R90 requirements. Featuring anti-squeal coating to

reduce noise, the pads are backed by a 20 month/20,000 miles

warranty and offer easy installation for customers.

Rigorous testing procedures are performed on all products,

including density, strength, friction, OE dynamometer and

compression tests, guaranteeing quality and providing ease of

fitment.

This latest expansion means the Padtech range now comprises

more than 1300 references covering all makes of vehicle, details

of which are available via MAM Software’s cataloguing system

AutoCat.

Safety first

for Walsall

Wood Tyre

and Service

WALSALL Wood

Tyre & Service,

a Falken

Tyre specialist,

based on Hall

Lane Industrial Estate, Walsall,

held its first tyre safety

event as part of TyreSafe’s

National Tyre Safety month

in October 2018.

From its conception the

garage has fast become the

go-to in the local community

for tyre and vehicle service

needs. Since opening

its doors in 2015, they have

offered a complete in-house

vehicle repair solution including

an MOT test facility

coupled with state-of-the-art

computerised digital wheel

alignment and full-service

ramps.

They became an accredited

Falken Tyre specialist within

their area in 2016 which

has spring boarded their local

reputation through the

supply of top quality, purse

friendly and award-winning

Falken Tyres, while always

offering high-level customer

service and advice to their

growing customer base.

October saw a partnership

between Falken Tyre sole UK

distributor, leading UK tyre

wholesaler Micheldever Tyre

Services (MTS) and Walsall

Wood to jointly host an interactive

tyre safety event and

talk with over 30 guests in

attendance throughout the

evening.

Nathan Taylor, Director

at Walsall Wood, commented

“As an owner of a business I

do what I do because I care,

so tyre safety is hugely important

to our business ethos

and an opportunity to raise

people’s awareness that we

readily welcome.

We already offer free tyre

safety checks to returning

and any new/passing customers

- we also want to lead the

way concerning tyre safety

and advice within our local

area. We have been delighted

with the response and feedback

from all guests, and we

are now in planning stages

for a series of safety events

throughout 2019”.

All guests took part in a

60-minute interactive safety

talk followed by a light buffet

and refreshments. All guests

in attendance were given a

free comprehensive information

pack and more robust

understanding of tyre safety

and the services Walsall Wood

Tyre & Service offers.

The safety evening was

a fantastic dealer support

event, helping Walsall Wood

connect with the local community.

The attendees were

existing and new customers

who all came away with a

greater understanding of tyre

safety and the passion that

Nathan and the team at Walsall

Wood Tyres have for their

business and most importantly,

excellent customer service

and giving the right tyre

safety advice!” added Jason

Burgess General Manager of

Micheldever Tyre Services.

Exol ladies raise £1,331

for St Giles Hospice

EXOL LUBRICANTS has raised much needed funds in aid

of a local Walsall charity, after its female staff took part in

its ladies-only Starlight Walk on September 15.

A grand total of £1,331 was raised in aid of St. Giles

Hospice, as women from across the region walked 3.75

miles through Aldridge to the finishing line at Aldridge

Community Centre.

Founded in 1983 by the Reverend Paul Brothwell,

St Giles Hospice’s aim is to improve the care of local

people dying with cancer and other potentially incurable

illnesses such as motor neurone disease, heart failure,

MS and respiratory disease. Its dedicated team provides

individually-tailored care across the community, also

offering support for families and helpers.

Steve Dunn, Exol sales & marketing director, said: “We

are extremely proud of our female team members at

Exol that took part and raised such a fantastic amount for

this worthy cause. St Giles relies heavily on donations

and fundraising, and I’m sure this amount will help

support some of the invaluable work that they carry out

across the local area.”

FORD ECOBOOST IGNITION COILS

Although clearly committed to the production of

hybrid and electric models, many vehicle manufacturers

still rely on leaner, lower emission

petrol engines and a perfect example is Ford’s

EcoBoost range.

The jewel in the EcoBoost crown is the multi award winning

1.0-litre engine, which is a compact, three-cylinder unit

that can outperform many larger, four-cylinder powerplants.

According to Ford, the term EcoBoost comes from the fact

that every drop of fuel is precious. So, the Eco element refers

to the desire to lower fuel consumption and make a serious

reduction in CO2 emissions, from as low as 99g/km.

The Boost refers to the fact that every EcoBoost engine

features a turbocharger to enable it to produce power that

far exceeds that of a normally aspirated engine of the same

capacity. The aforementioned 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine for

example, can deliver an impressive output of 140PS, similar

to that of an older, heavier 1.6-litre petrol unit.

To achieve these results, EcoBoost engines naturally rely

upon a host of engine management sensors and a quick, effective

ignition systems.

Vehicle sense and control specialists ELTA Automotive has

experienced a significant rise in demand for one EcoBoost

component in particular: the VXPRO branded EE5112 ignition

coil, which is quickly climbing the parts pareto. This is

largely due to the sheer number of Ford EcoBoost powered

vehicles on the road, sales of which have been incredible and

the VXPRO EE5112 alone caters for around half a million

vehicles in the UK.

This is a tremendous aftermarket opportunity as many of

these vehicles are now reaching an age where they are out of

warranty and therefore require an aftermarket replacement.

In common with all VXPRO ignition components, the

EE5112 is manufactured to original equipment specifications

and offers a ‘Vehicle Performance Guarantee’ to assure

like for like performance.

wheel according to the road

surface and driving conditions,

in order to provide

a comfortable drive on any

road surface.

The KYB shock absorbers

optimise the damping force

at low speeds, responding

quickly from the start, as

well as providing excellent

handling and ride comfort

at faster speeds. By reducing

body roll during cornering,

the steering and emergency

avoidance ability has been

enhanced. By controlling

the damping force independently

for each wheel, AVS

maintains the posture of

the vehicle. There is an additional

sports mode on the

vehicle, where the damping

force is switched to be suitable

for sports driving.

The new shock absorbers

had 600 separate tests,

using various combinations

of oils and components, before

the final selection was

made to achieve a comfortable

drive with responsive

steering.

15 News

Despite the extensive

durability testing

that the VMs

put the numerous

components, designs

and systems that are

incorporated into their vehicles

through, problems do

occur and design faults are

revealed during their dayto-day,

real-world operation.

This naturally means that

over their production life,

apparently identical models

will actually differ in terms

of the modified or redesigned

components that are

fitted, to allow the VMs to

resolve the issues that come

to light when the vehicles are

in everyday use.

A great example of this

can be seen on multiple PSA

applications – Citroën C3,

C4, DS3, Peugeot 207, 208,

2008, 308, 3008, 508, 5008,

RCZ, Partner, BMW MINI

- 1.4i/1.6i 2006 onwards –

where there are known issues

caused by the specification

of the thermostat and

thermostat housing installed

during their original production.

This led to an increasing

number of premature

failures, with many owners

complaining of overheating

related problems and reporting

symptoms such as an irregular

temperature gauge,

erratic engine running, radiator

fan run-on or poor

heater function. As a result,

PSA has modified the design

of the thermostat housing

several times in an attempt

to correct the issues.

The modified versions

have several enhancements

including reinforced connections

and a more robust

structure to minimise

the potential of warping or

fracturing. The lower sensor

has been moved to accommodate

a new electronically

operated thermostat,

which replaces the wax

FIRST LINE KEEPS IT COOL

version used in the original

design. Technicians need to

be aware that these modifications

have meant that

there is a visual difference

between the new and old

designs. However, providing

the factor has supplied what

is specified in the First Line

catalogue, rather than what

‘through experience’ they

consider to be the ‘correct’

replacement, then they can

have complete confidence

that it is correct for the application

and therefore okay

to install, even if it looks different.

In particular, the references

that have been re-specified

include First Line part

number FTK422. Originally

this had a single 4-pin sensor

on top of the housing,

but this has been modified

by changing it to two, 2-pin

sensors, one remaining at

the top and the second being

moved to the lower side.

As this original single sensor

has been split into two,

a new wiring harness is required,

which is only available

from the OE supplier.

The OE design of the housing

was then modified again,

this time necessitated by the

replacement of the wax thermostat

by a new electronically

controlled version and

to accommodate the change,

the lower sensor was moved

round to the back of the

housing. Therefore, FTK422

was subsequently superseded

to FTK454 following

these modifications.

In order to follow best

practice, First Line recommends

that when replacing

any of these thermostats/

thermostat housings, it is

advised that the engine ECU

software is checked and

re-programmed before any

components are replaced to

ensure it is set to reflect the

latest version.

FROST & SULLIVAN NAMES

ZF EUROPEAN AUTOMOTIVE

AFTERMARKET COMPANY

OF THE YEAR 2018

ZF has been named

as Frost & Sullivan’s

European Automotive

Aftermarket

‘Company of the

Year’ 2018. Independently

measured against a list of

criteria under the headings

‘Visionary Innovation & Performance’

and ‘Customer

Impact’, ZF Aftermarket beat

off stiff competition to take

the title. The award was presented

at Frost & Sullivan’s

Excellence in Best Practices

Awards Banquet on October

4th, 2018 at the Royal Garden

Hotel in London.

“Against a competitive and

challenging market backdrop,

ZF Aftermarket’s industry

leader and partnership

skills in the field of

advancing mobility make it

a true and worthy winner of

the title ‘European Automotive

Aftermarket Company of

the Year’,” explains Benson

Augustine, Senior Research

Analyst Frost & Sullivan.

“With proven examples of

being first to market with

new solutions, we believe the

business expertly combines

delivery of best practice; in

terms of growth, innovation

and leadership – maximizing

customer value and experience

– with the art and

science of futureproofing its

offer.”

Excellent Standard

of Competition

ZF Aftermarket beat off

stiff competition from across

Europe to take the title. Frost

& Sullivan analysts independently

evaluated two key factors:

Visionary Innovation &

Performance and Customer

Impact. These were measured

against a list of criteria

which included: addressing

unmet needs; visionary scenarios

through Mega Trends;

best practice implementation,

financial performance,

price & performance value,

customer and service experi-

ence and brand equity.

Across the board ZF Aftermarket

achieved a point

score of 9 out of 10; the next

best scores of other companies

in the running being 8

and 7 respectively.

A detailed report prepared

by Frost & Sullivan paid particular

attention to a number

of key areas in which it believes

ZF Aftermarket excels.

In a competitive and crowded

market place, the businesses

forward thinking ethos was

praised. Of particular note,

how it leverages value-added

customer benefits from

the ZF Group, and properly

aligns its associated distributor

partners in the aftermarket

value chain to adapt to

changing market trends.

Furthermore, the commentary

explains how ZF

Aftermarket has embraced

a growing appreciation for,

and acceptance of: shared

mobility concepts, urban

mobility platforms, rising

hybrid technology, e-mobility

and autonomous driving. It

states how ZF Aftermarket

clearly understands rising

hybrid technology and the

quantum of impact electric

vehicles (EVs) and autonomous

cars will have on the

general aftermarket, and

how it has aligned its goals

to prepare for the impact.

The article commends the

solutions and component

expertise under the brand

portfolio: Lemförder, Sachs,

TRW, and Boge. Furthermore

it applauds the company’s

exposure to different industries

such as wind technology,

rail with respect to urban

mobility, and construction,

and how this helps it share

and leverage technology borrowed

from different avenues

for downstream business as

well as implement best practices

across verticals. Frost

& Sullivan appreciates that

these far-reaching tactics

make the company stand out

as a key supplier in the European

aftermarket by offering

niche capabilities and investing

in future technologies by

strategically channeling its

wide business portfolio.

Upon receiving the award,

Ben Smart, Director Global

Marketing & Communication

ZF Aftermarket commented:

“We are extremely proud of

this award. It recognizes the

hard work, vision and dedication

of our global aftermarket

team.

“We also applaud our customers,

whose daily choices

to support the organization

contribute in a meaningful

way to its future.

OPINION 18

ELECTRIFICATION!

How long can the aftermarket emissions component industry last?

By Doug Bentley

Research & Development Manager at Klarius Products Ltd.

ELECTRIFICATION

in the automotive industry

is happening.

With international

and environmental

pressure building around

the issue, and the industry

beginning to respond, it is

inevitable that this will be the

next paradigm shift regarding

automotive powertrains.

As the Research and Development

manager for an aftermarket

emissions component

company, I’m often

asked how long the market

can last. Due to some recent

announcements in the industry,

I may be able to shed

some light on that.

Toyota has long been considered

a benchmark in the

automotive industry, it has

been the market leader in

terms of volume for over a

decade. Seminal offerings

such as the 2000GT, Hilux,

Landcruiser, Supra and

more sit alongside the more

recent (and relevant) hybrid

Prius to illustrate a business

that can offer vehicles that

not only define the industry,

but our attitudes to cars as

a whole. So, when Toyota

opens-up about its plans for

an electrified future, the automotive

world listens.

In December 2017, Toyota

announced that it plans to

sell 5.5 million electrified vehicles

annually by 2030, with

1 million of these being zero-

emissions vehicles1. The remaining

4.5 million will be

covered by hybrid vehicles.

Impressive numbers when

considered in isolation, however

when compared to the

total production output of

Toyota, a different picture

presents itself.

During the fiscal year that

ended March 2017, Toyota

sold around 10 million vehicles

worldwide. No doubt

Toyota will wish to improve

on these figures by 2030;

however, using 10 million as

a benchmark figure still illustrates

a point. Even by 2030,

Toyota’s optimistic predictions

state that only a tenth

of the vehicles it will sell annually

will be fully electric. In

this time period, over 9 million

liquid-fuel powered cars

are projected to be sold by

Toyota, taking into account

traditional petrol, ethanol or

diesel-powered vehicles and

hybrids.

What does this highlight to

manufacturers and distributors

of exhausts then? Well,

for a start, these figures show

that there is a clear timescale

before full electric cars gain

an impact over traditional

powertrains in terms of sales

and it’s a long way off. Hybrid

powertrains still require exhausts,

as they blend traditional

liquid fuelled engines

with electric motors and batteries,

so therefore produce

emissions. This means that

the exhaust is set to be widely

used on new production

vehicles well into the 2040’s,

and as average life spans

vary between 7 and 10 years,

the aftermarket will be servicing

these vehicles well into

the 2050’s.

Furthermore, this prediction

does not take into account

the many challenges

and concerns surrounding

a worldwide switch to electric

vehicles. Infrastructure

to support electric vehicles

will be lagging behind for

some years to come, as illustrated

by the 10 new nuclear

power stations that would

be required to reach the UK

Government’s pledge to fully

electrify road cars by 2040.

In addition, access to rare

earth metals used in battery

production is anything

but assured, with many

resources such as cobalt

held in conflict zones, while

commodities businesses

must scale up operations to

meet increased demand. We

only have to consider VAG

Group’s recently failed tender

to secure cobalt supply

for the next 5 years4 to see

the barriers the automotive

industry must overcome.

Conversely, if liquid fuel such

as alcohol is manufactured

on a large scale biologically,

using sunlight and bacteria,

it might just remain cheaper

than electricity and extend

the life of the combustion engine

even further, frankly at

this point, who knows.

Finally, technological limitations

such as battery heat

generation haven’t been fully

addressed, while many owners

of electric vehicles are unsure

how future maintenance

work will be carried out and

the total cost of ownership

over the long-term. Ultimately

it seems, for both the exhaust

and liquid fuel cars in

general, there is plenty more

in the tank.

BM CATALYSTS SUPPORTS

BM Catalysts has

backed a recent update

to the popular

parts catalogue system

MAM, stating it

is ‘set to revolutionise’ the

emissions aftermarket. The

move, which matches Euro

levels to vehicle registrations

and then links them to

the correctly homologated

catalyst or DPF for the first

time ever, has been introduced

as a way of providing

distributors and installers

with far greater accuracy

when searching for emission-based

products. The

new release means it will

now be almost impossible

for users to get an incorrect

match with non-compliant

parts for their vehicle.

Autocat V9, rolled out to

customers this month, is

trusted by counter staff at

motor factors and installers

across the country. Prior

to the recent change, users

utilising the software were

able to see parts that were

not suitable due to incorrect

homologations, when

identifying and comparing

aftermarket components for

a specific vehicle and application.

A leading manufacturer

in the aftermarket and Europe’s

largest producer of

raft of changes to the MOT

system, with a particular focus

on checks to the exhaust

around tampering, removal

or visible smoke production

from the DPF. This makes

the v9 update even more

timely and I’m sure that the

move implemented by MAM

will prove revolutionary in

high quality DPFs, catalytic

23 winter solutions

Lumileds

encourage a

free winter

car check

Autumn comes

with a different

set of challenges

to those faced in

the summer. While

the days will still get darker

earlier, it means drivers are

more likely to be out on the

road at night, which in turn

means less visibility as the

shorter days make it more

likely that motorists are going

to be driving in the dark.

It is important, therefore, that

their car’s lights are working

as they should be. Offering a

free winter check can ensure

their safety.

Richard Armstrong, Business

Development Manager

Automotive - UK & Eire at

Lumileds said:

“Driving in winter is a challenge.

During those harsh

winter months, motorists

need to know that their headlights

are up to the job. Just

as they would adapt to wintery

roads by choosing winter

tyres, so drivers should demand

the best visibility when

driving in these darker, more

dangerous conditions.

“With the long dark winter

nights fast approaching,

technicians should advise

motorists, on upgrading their

car head bulbs. The award

winning Philips RacingVision

headlamps, for instance, give

the driver more control in

the toughest conditions and

this increase in beam performance

could just make the

difference to the motorist’s

safety. This ability to see further

and more clearly, allows

the driver to identify any potentially

dangerous situations

earlier than if the car had a

standard bulb fitted.”

Heading the Philips offer

is RacingVision, - the first

halogen bulb to be rated at

+150% compared to the industry

standard - which immediately,

on launch, proved

itself to be the best performing

halogen headlamp bulb

on the market, in the UK’s

most widely read and respected

vehicle headlight test and

it was recently awarded Best

Buy 2018 by Auto Express.

Even split seconds can

make a crucial difference to

drivers safety. The superior

beam performance of the

Philips RacingVision headlamp

helps drivers identify

dangerous situations faster

and stay in control of their

vehicle – whatever road conditions

they are facing.

The specific color temperature

(up to 3,500 Kelvin) of

Philips RacingVision also

helps drivers’ eyes focus better.

They therefore have greater

control and confidence,

and can relax into a safer and

more enjoyable journey.

As a leading lighting solutions

company for the automotive

industry, Lumileds is

responsible for manufacturing

and bringing to market

Philips products for its automotive

lighting and accessories

product portfolio. Philips

bulbs are OE equipment

on one out of every two new

cars sold in Europe and the

current range of replacement

and upgrade Philips bulbs for

the aftermarket continues to

set the standard for quality,

performance and overall cost

effectiveness.

The range of Philips bulbs

is comprehensive and, as well

as a full selection of replacement

Halogen Bulbs and HID

Xenon replacement & upgrade

bulbs, also includes

LED lighting options for various

vehicle applications.

Automotive professionals

have to solve a variety of

complex problems every day.

But sometimes the biggest

challenge isn’t diagnosing the

fault, it’s having the space,

light and dexterity to put it

right.

This challenge was something

that the R&D department

at Lumileds had to tackle.

The company’s expertise

in lighting as a whole, with

the Philips brand, meant it

was perfectly placed to do the

research and to develop innovative

new workshop lighting

solutions when it originally

entered the workshop lighting

arena. There are, however,

always requirements for

new and specific lighting solutions,

so the team set to work

to find just such a solution.

The answer to the problem

was to come up with lights

that offered instant adjustable

lighting and Lumileds

has therefore introduced

the Philips pocket inspection

lamp RCH5S, the cordless

work lamp RCH25, and

the portable projector light

PJH10, all of which featuring

a unique dimming function

for enhanced comfort while

working.

When boost mode is too

bright to see fine detail and

eco mode is too dark, mechanics

require the flexibility

of a dimming function. The

tool’s adjustable brightness,

therefore, can meet a variety

of illumination needs at

the press of a button. The

memory function automatically

stores the last setting

when switching back on.

The Philips RCH5S provides

up to 300 lumen and can be

dimmed to 30, the Philips

RCH25 provides up to 500

lumen and can be dimmed to

50, finally the Philips PJH10

provides up to 1 000 lumen

and can be dimmed gradually

down to 100 lumen.

All three are equipped

with high-quality LEDs for

a bright, intense light with

maximum performance.

LEDs have a color temperature

of 6000 K. They produce

a natural white light that is

easy on the eye, improving

visual comfort and reducing

eye strain for fatigue-free

working. The Philips RCH5S

and Philips RCH25 also feature

a powerful spot light to

distribute the light exactly

where it’s needed.

In addition, the Philips

RCH5S and Philips RCH25

are compatible with the same

docking station, included in

the respective product packaging.

The docking station is

compact, flexible, and provides

seamless handling.

All three of the new professional

LED workshop lamps

are designed for the toughest

environments, conforming

to IK09 , one of the highest

international shock impact

resistance standards. The

lamps are covered with rubber,

providing further protection

for an already robust

housing.

Richard Armstrong further

commented: “The new Philips

professional LED workshop

lights provide mechanics

with the brightness that best

suits their needs, from brief

inspection to maintenance

and repair work. These three

new Philips workshop lamps

are our most advanced rechargeable

professional LED

work lights. Not only do their

high-quality LEDs provide

bright natural light, they also

achieve the highest standards

in durable construction, such

as *IK09 and *IP68 scores.”

Whiter Headlights

Offer Upgrade

Opportunity

There is a new upgrade

option for

headlight bulbs,

thanks to the new

Ring Xenon5000

headlight bulbs. These

bright, white headlights

match the colour of LED daytime

running lamps without

HID or LED technology.

Modern vehicle lighting often

incorporates low energy,

very white LED daytime running

lamps (DRLs). These

emit an attractive white

light, with a very high colour

temperature – around

6000K. As most cars still

have standard halogen headlights,

this can lead to an

inconsistent look between

the white DRLs and the

headlights, which will emit a

yellow-tinted light, with a colour

temperature of around

2700K. Ring’s latest performance

headlight bulb – the

Xenon5000 – is different.

This bulb emits a very white

light, with a colour temperature

of around 5000K. These

bulbs closely match LEDs,

and give a high spec finish.

It is the easy way to upgrade

the look of a vehicle, and

responds the growing trend

for whiter headlights.

As well as giving an attractive

appearance, the whiter

light improves reflections

from road signs and markings,

and the bulbs put up

to 50% more light on the

road than a standard halogen

headlight, making night

time driving safer and more

comfortable.

Matthew Flaherty, Ring’s

Lighting Product Manager,

says: “The mismatch between

headlights and LED

DRLs gives an inconsistent

look in vehicle lighting. The

new Xenon5000 bulbs give

drivers a low-cost upgrade

that is easy to install and

gives instant results, while

giving a clear upgrade opportunity

and chance to

increase profit. We’ve used

highly engineered lighting

technology and testing to ensure

that not only do these

bulbs give an attractive

white light output, they also

put more light on the road

and are fully street legal.”

The new bulbs come in

popular H1, H4, H7 and H11

and references, with an SRP

starting at £28.49, making

them ideal to fit on a wide

range of vehicles. They require

no wiring changes and

are ECE Reg 37 approved,

making them road legal. The

H4, H7 and H11 bulbs have

a stylish silver tip, to blend

into the headlamp unit and

give a high spec finish. A

countertop display unit is

also available.

The Xenon5000 is the latest

addition to Ring’s performance

halogen range, and

joins the rest of the brighter

and whiter bulb ranges. It is

available to order now.

THE RMI’S ANNUAL DINNER

RMI CHAIRMAN Peter

Johnson welcomed

everyone to the RMI’s

annual dinner, its

105th, and went on

to deliver a prominent speech

highlighting the challenges

faced by the automotive industry.

His speech began by acknowledging

that record employment

and low interest

rates have encouraged people

to spend, buying in 1.9 million

new cars, 270 thousand

commercial vehicles and

more than four million used

cars so far this year.

Referring to the 2016 EU

Referendum he said British

businesses have been waiting

for clarification on the future

trading terms and clarity on

who can be recruited.

The free movement of

people between the UK and

EU will come to an end in

December 2020, and we are

watching closely the changes

that the government is going

to make on immigration

policy. The recent report of

the migration advisory committee

recognised many of

the benefits of employing

skilled labour from overseas,

but it also recommended

that workers should only be

able to come here if they are

earning a minimum of thirty

thousand pounds, which for

some of our members will

be too high. Consideration

needs to be given to the ensuing

labour shortages and its

impact on consumers”.

He continued: “In our years

of EU membership, we have

become used to frictionless

and tariff-free trade between

the UK and the other countries

of the EU. It means parts

can be delivered quickly from

wherever they are made or

held. It means vehicles can

be ordered and transported

across borders in a matter

of hours and days and it has

meant that goods do not have

to be checked at the border.”

Currently, the automotive

sector provides employment

for over 800,000 people and

so it is essential that a beneficial

deal is reached to provide

security to the industry.

Johnson moved focus to

the subject of emissions and

talked about the decision of

the government’s announcement

that all petrol and diesel

vehicles will be removed

from our roads by 2040.

The RMI has been working

hard to get government

to acknowledge the role of

cleaner diesel cars and vans

in lowering emissions. The

recent government road to

zero test strategy set out the

ambition for as many as 70

percent of new car sales to be

ultra-low emission by 2030,

alongside 40 percent of new

vans”.

It’s clear that the future of

motoring is leaning towards

hybrid and electric vehicles,

with demand continuing to

grow year on year. Johnson

said: “This new technology

is fundamentally different to

petrol and diesel and will require

all elements of the sector

to adapt requiring new

skills and business models,

something the RMI is working

hard to equip all members”.

In closing, Peter spoke

warmly about the success

of the RMI academy and

the growing success of both

sites. “It’s now the largest

MoT training provider in the

UK thanks to providing high

quality MOT tester training

every single week, and new

courses are continually being

added to the roster. Annual

training for existing testers

delivered in a variety of

formats adds significantly to

these volumes. Our success

is enabling us to expand, and

plans are progressing for further

facilities in the south”.

He was proud to observe

that REMIT, the RMI’s training

subsidiary, had delivered

more than 8000 apprenticeships

to the automotive sector

in the past 10 years and

recently celebrated the first

anniversary of its state of the

art automotive academy in

Derby.

Businesses cannot underestimate

the importance of

training and development.

Employees receiving regular

training are vital to the ongoing

success of any business,

and that continued

investment in training demonstrates

to employees their

value and contribution to the

business, while boosting morale.

Johnson concluded with

a positive note on mileage

fraud. He was pleased to announce

that The Department

for Transport had confirmed

that they will be consulting

with trade associations on

this subject in the near future.

The importance of

winter servicing

The Garage magazine spoke briefly with Terry Gibson

Head of member services for the IGA about the

importance of Winter Servicing and Garages advising

their customers.

Terry said “Now that winter is upon us, consumers

need to understand that their car needs to be prepared

for winter weather and is safe to drive in difficult

conditions”.

Terry spoke about the need to make sure that there

is a strong winter message. Support your winter

offer with a strong marketing

campaign through social

media and other avenues such

as free sheets, leaflet drops

and onsite promotion within

your reception areas.

Terry continued “feel free to

go onto the Trust My Garage

website and blog where

helpful hints and tips for

consumers can be integrated

within your message”.

Coming soon . . .

Winter servicing

Winter is the

most taxing

season

to a car, the

combination

of low temperatures, filthy

roads and darker mornings

and evenings meaning any

car has its work cut out just

to be reliable and comfortable.

For garages there are always

opportunities to increase

revenue streams

and, as was seen earlier this

year, Winter can always hang

around longer than expected,

as the ‘Beast from the

East’ showed.

In so many ways a garage

can be – indeed, should be

– putting more money in

the till. From basics such

as screen wash and replacing

wiper blades to offering

winter tyres, motorists need

to be confident their car is

prepared.

Even the most uninformed

motorist knows winter is a

taxing time for a car’s batteries

and, says Hella, one

in four vehicles are at risk

of battery failure and battery

performance can be reduced

by up to 35 percent once

temperatures hit freezing

point.

The Hella battery line-up

includes the Classic range,

for older vehicles with fewer

power demands, the Premium

range for cars of all sizes

and with medium to high energey

demands, and rounds

off with the Supreme, which

targets vehicles with multiple

electrical devices. An

AGM range is also available.

While it’s all to easy for

today’s engineering ignorant

motorists to fire up and drive

away as quickly as possible,

even with today’s engine oils

there’s the risk of damage to

cylinder bores and pistons –

damage that once inflicted,

is hard (if not impossible) to

remove.

Help is at hand with Liqui

Moly’s Cera Tec, which when

added to the engine oil adds

an extra surface protection,

and is especially useful during

the first minute after an

engine is started.

“During this long minute

metal grinds metal and wear

is excessively high,” says

Harry Hartkorn, application

engineer at Liqui Moly.

“Added to the engine oil, this

substance serves the engine

in two ways. On the one

hand it reduces friction so

starting up is facilitated. On

the other hand it applies a

very thin coating to all parts

of the engine which protects

them after starting up until

the oil gets there.”

Recent exposure of diesel

engine may have made the

once-popular oil-burning

thousands of diesel-engined

cars still in use Liqui Moly’s

Diesel Flow Fit combats the

effects of paraffin wax buildup,

which can clog fuel filters.

“With it diesel can withstand

temperatures down to

minus 31°C.”

Before driving away there’s

always the frost build-up to

contend with and CarPlan’s

Demon Ice, a two-in-one ice

preventer and de-icer makes

early morning starts easier.

Sprayed on the night before

it combats ice buildup

on a car’s windows, but

if it is used in the morning

melts ice immediately and

prevents re-freezing.

CarPlan also offers Demon

Shot, which is described as

a screenwash booster that

improves the freezing point

of screenwash already in the

washer bottle and makes 25

litre of standard screenwash

from a 500ml bottle.

Visibility becomes even

more important during the

Winter but many motorists

neglect to replace their cars’

wiper blades, even when

they are extremely worn.

Denso says that in 2013

around 3000 accidents were

caused by sun glare, with

dirty windscreens being a

main contributor to those

figures. The leading blade

supplier says both drivers

and workshops should look

out for the signs of a worn

wiper blade, those symptoms

including the blade

juddering across the screen,

or where the wiping is uneven

because the blade is

not in full contact with the

glass.

“As not all drivers know

the warning signs of poor or

damaged wipers it’s important

that workshops spot the

signs of problematic wipers

during vehicle servicing,

and offer high-quality wiper

blades as replacements,”

Denso says. “If workshops

can effectively advise drivers,

they can help contribute

to the general safety of UK

roads whatever the conditions,

while offering customers

an excellent service.”

The Denso wiper catalogue

features 232 part numbers.

In a similar vein to the

figures quoted by Denso,

Trico says around one fifth

of all accidents are down to

poor visibility. The company,

which has supplied wiper

blades for more than a century,

says blades should be

replaced twice a year, and

that education process begins

by ensuring the technician

understands the importance

of blade changing, and

passing the message on to

the motorist.

“More than 90 percent of

new vehicles come equipped

with beam-style blades and

this trend will continue to

grow every year. Technicians

should always start

by offering their customers

premium blades. Beam

blades are better in many

ways – they’re the latest in

wiper technology and have

an infinite number of pressure

points for superior wiping

performance – and your

customers will appreciate

knowing you’re looking out

for their safety,” says Trico

senior product and brand

manager, Sam Robinson.

“Rear integral blades

should be changed just as

often as the front wipers.

However, most drivers only

change their rear blade once

every five years or so, providing

you with a great opportunity

to help your customers

and win their loyalty.”

Elta Automotive’s Vision-

Pro wiper blade range covers

conventional, hybrid and

flat blade types, either as a

direct replacement or as an

upgrade. The conventional

blade range includes standard,

spoiler and wash-kit

types, while flat blades use a

graphite-coated rubber.

“With range and coverage

in mind, Elta’s VisionPro flat

blades feature the innovative

+FIT adaptor system, which

on the one hand provides

maximum compatibility

from a relatively short range

of part numbers, while one

the other, makes the fitting

process fast and straightforward,”

Elta says.

Alongside wiper blades,

it’s important that car’s

lights are working properly,

meaning the driver can see

and be seen. Countless drivers

neglect checking their

car’s lights but that lack of

lighting concern can lead to

fatal consequences.

While it’s tempting – especially

with headlight bulbs

– to change just the one

that has failed, Hella recommends

replacing in pairs.

“Despite being the same

wattage, the older bulb is

SEEING CLEARLY

THE CABIN FILTER ROLE

THE CABIN filter doesn’t come into its own solely in the

summer, because when a car’s heating and ventilation

system is working, so too is the cabin filter. If it is not changed

regularly it can become clogged and that means, particularly

in Winter, seriously reduced visibility because that blockage

will lead to windows becoming misted up.

“A sure sign that the Cabin Filter needs replacing is if

the windscreen begins to mist or takes a long time to demist.

To prevent these potential health and safety issues

from occurring, technicians should be recommending filter

replacement and, irrespective of these known problems,

cabin filters should be automatically replaced every 12

months,” First Line says.

The company has launched cabin filters for VAG

applications including Seat Leon and Skoda Octavia.

> continued from page 30

likely to be less bright than

a new one simply as a consequence

of its use, so visually

there could be an imbalance,”

Hella says.

There is also the labour

charging implications,

because as cars become

more complicated, even the

once menial headlight bulb

change becomes more demanding.

To meet the demands of

the car parc Hella offers

four bulb ranges – Lfetime,

Performance, Design and

Xenon, and the company’s

online tool, www.hella.com/

MicroSite/bulbs/en/ helps

workshops select the correct

bulb.

According to Philips, even

may E-marked bulbs are not

fit for purpose, the result of

less precise manufacturing

techniques that lead to the

bulb’s beam being imprecise,

too short or creating too

much glare.

Lumileds bulbs, which are

licensed to use the Philips

brand name, go beyond the

ECE R37 requirements with

tougher in-house demands.

And with greater illumination,

winter driving becomes

more relaxed and safer.

“Despite the introduction,

in recent years of new lighting

technology such as Xenon

and LED, most cars on the

road currently still use halogen

lights. Simply replacing

the bulb, for example with a

H4 or H7 X-tremeVision, can

generate a light beam that is

up to 130 percent brighter

and 45 metres longer,” says

Lumileds business development

manager Richard Armstrong.

“We are frequently told not

to touch halogen bulbs with

bare hands, but the biggest

problem here is not the oils

that can burn into the glass

and cause damage, as this

would require an enormous

level of contamination.

“What is much worse is

even the smallest amount of

contaminants that evaporate

in the headlights and deposit

themselves on the sensitive

mirror surfaces. This can

cause an unsightly coating

to build up relatively quickly,

which will affect the lighting

quality at some point. So the

best thing is to always wear

suitable gloves.”

While it’s important for

workshops to carry a comprehensive

range of bulbs it’s

also important they try to sell

upgrades, meaning the driver

has greater visibility during

dark driving conditions.

“Upgrade bulbs provide

workshops with a legitimate

opportunity to offer their

customers an attractive option

to modernise the look of

their cars, while also improving

the real-world visibility

for the driver,”Elta says, and

the improved spread of light

is especially useful in the

Winter.

“Where the confusion can

arise is with the assumption

that upgrade bulbs, such as

the Visioprio50, 150, Blue

and Blue+, are 50 percent

or 150 percent ‘brighter’. In

fact, to conform with the necessary

E-mark specification

for road use their brightness

must be within plus- or minus-10

percent of the original

equipment bulb.

“However, where these upgrade

bulbs really benefit

driver visibility is with the

amount – plus 50 percent or

150 percent – and spread of

light they provide on the road

up to 75 metres in front of

the vehicle. This extra light,

rather than extra brightness,

means they can see obstacles

sooner and road signs more

clearly, making night driving

safer.”

STAY ON TRACK

THIS WINTER

WINTER TYRES

The winter months are not

far ahead of us and it is time

to start thinking about how

to make our vehicles safe.

Richard Barnett looks into how

garages can get geared up to

meet the growth in demand of

winter tyres

BluEarth W*drive V905

is Yokohama’s first tyre to

use BluEarth fuel-efficient

technologies and uses a directional

pattern. It is available

for medium-sized and

performance cars, as well as

SUVs, and is available in 15”-

22” diameters.

The V905 is joined by the

W*drive V902, which is made

from a flexible polymer compound

to drain water, slush

and rain: the design also incorporates

3D-shaped sipes

for added traction. It is available

in 15”-21” diameters.

W*drive V902 ZPS is aimed

at cars with run-on-flat tyres

(16”-18” diameters) and the

W*drive V903, in 13”-16” diameters

is aimed at smaller

and compact cars, offering

and slush and better stability

for high-speed cruising.

There’s no escaping the fact

British drivers haven’t fully

embraced the winter tyres

philosophy and if the season

is mild, they tend to feel vindicated.

However, winter tyres do

offer other benefits: “Winter

tyres aren’t just for snow.

They offer better grip and

traction below 7°C and not

just snow, says Falken Tyre

Europe managing director

Markus Bogner.

A different compound

means winter tyres do not

suffer the tread compound

hardening summer tyres suffer

from when temperatures

begin dropping, the winter

GROWTH in winter

tyre acceptance was

a long time coming,

yet many motorists

are now taking

the winter choice courtesy

of more challenging driving

conditions.

Blame it on an extended

winter that saw freezing

temperatures and snow in

March, it’s clear those drivers

who once saw winter tyres

as an expensive frippery are

changing their minds, and

that means workshops have

to be more geared-up to meet

that demand.

Among those suppliers

with a comprehensive winter

rubber and advanced silica.

The combination of supple

tyres, and improved tread

patterns means that winter

tyres have improved braking

distance as well as general

improved grip on the road

surface in colder conditions.

“For example, testing has

shown if you were travelling

at 50mph in wet conditions

below 4°C, the braking distance

is 4 metres shorter with

winter tyres. The braking distance

difference between the

two tyres is even greater when

on snow covered roads, with

the winter tyres stopping 11

metres shorter, when travelling

at 25mph,” Falken says.

SKID ROW…WINTER WEATHER AND

WET ROADS PUT DRIVERS IN A SPIN

AS WINTER approaches, Government figures show that

slippery roads were one of the biggest factors for car

crashes last year.

Yet many of these accidents might have been avoided

if the driver had been on a skid pan experience, advises

www.trackdays.co.uk , where drivers learn how to recover

a skidding car.

Information obtained by www.trackdays.co.uk from the

Department for Transport reveals that 5,495 accidents in

2017 were caused by slippery roads due to the weather.

Furthermore, rain, sleet, snow or fog was also to blame

for 1,244 car accidents when it affected the driver’s

visibility.

Dan Jones, operations manager at www.trackdays.co.uk,

said: “Many drivers tend to panic when going in to a skid.

It’s no surprise really as skid control is not a natural skill to

have and the reaction of drivers can worsen the situation.

“One way to prepare for the deteriorating driving

conditions over the coming months is by honing your

skills on a skid pan, where experienced instructors teach

drivers how to recover a car

from a skid in a safe and

controlled environment.

“And while skid control is

an important skill to learn,

which could potentially

help save lives on the UK roads, instructors make sure it is

also done in a fun and enjoyable way.”

Aside from the driving conditions, loss of control of

a car was also a contributory factor in more than 8,000

accidents in 2017.

Dan added: “In Sweden, for instance, skid control is

part of driver training. Given last year’s particularly harsh

winter and the Beast from the East, with some predictions

that severe winters could become the norm, then perhaps

Government should also consider making it mandatory in

the UK for leaner drivers.”

For more information about TrackDays, which also offers

a huge variety of driving experiences, as well as skid pan

lessons, visit www.trackdays.co.uk.

Maxxis a firm favourite for the

UK’s all-season tyre market

AS THE UK reacts to the change in season, motorists are forced to

question their tyre choices for the varying weather patterns. While many

opt to switch from summer to winter tyres and back again, a secondary

option; all-season tyres, has emerged as a popular choice for road users

looking for year-round performance without the hassle of switching

their tyres partway through the year.

Responding to these motorists’ requirements, the Maxxis’ AP2

and MA-LAS all-season tyres have boasted strong sales since their

unveiling in 2016. Both benefit from extra-heavy sidewall construction,

an advanced tread compound and a double steel-belted design for

long-lasting wear and uniformity. Additionally, continuous shoulder

ribs provide smooth, even tread wear, increasing tread life as

motorist’s head into the colder winter months.

Commenting on the brand’s all-season range, Maxxis’ managing

director Derek McMartin said: “As a global tyre manufacturer we

aim to give drivers peace of mind, whatever the weather throws at

them. Demand for all-season tyres has risen steadily over the years,

particularly among motorists exposed to a range of weather conditions

on long journeys. In light of this we have renewed our efforts to provide

road users with a comfortable and safe journey all year round.

Speaking on why the AP2 is so popular with motorists, Mark Jeffs, garage

owner at Maxxis stockist MJ Tec Ltd., added: “We find it’s the best all-round

tyre on the market, providing our customers with great value for money and

sure-footed performance. It’s the only tyre where we receive fantastic feedback

from motorists, who come back to us stating that they really notice the grip the

tyre provides under wet conditions. As a reliable and durable tyre throughout the year,

it gives our customers great driving confidence.”

Maxxis has one of the biggest all-season tyre ranges on the market, with 150 tyre options available to consumers

across the car, van and SUV sectors. These fit wheels which range from 13” to 19” rims, with width options from

135mm to 275mm.

our innovative approach continues

to lead the way,” says

head of sales.

Also keeping abreast of

new technology is Hankook,

whose ultra high-performance

tyre has received

the Red Dot design award.

Aimed at luxury cars and

sports cars, an SUV version

is also available.

Using a silica compound to

resist cold weather hardening

Winter i*cept evo2 and

Winter i*cept evo2 SUV feature

asymmetric tread patterns

for improved handling

and grip.

“Special 3D sipes applied

throughout the tyre tread

also enhance driving stability

in wintery conditions

by minimising block movement,

abrasion and enhancing

the overall handling

performance by maximising

edge effects. Lateral ice axe

shaped grooves applied to

the inside tread part have a

scratching effect on snowcovered

roads, resulting in

powerful snow performance

by optimising the lateral

groove angle.

The outside tread part’s

two longitudinal wide

grooves have been designed

with a 30% increased void

volume compared to existing

products for efficient water

and slush displacement.

They support the Hankook

Winter i*cept evo2’s snow

grip and hydroplaning performance

for a stable driving

experience on snowy and wet

roads. A reinforced sidewall

and bead section in combination

with the tyre’s wider

shoulder part and optimised

cube block design lead to a

direct steering response as

well as improved cornering

grip and dry handling performance,”

Hankook says.
