Tinder for
volunteers
comes to city
• By Julia Evans
A NEW app described as Tinder
for volunteers has been launched
in Christchruch.
Collaborate is an app that
matches potential volunteers
with volunteering jobs. Users
log-in at letscollaborate.co.nz
then select their skills and
interests before swiping through
the opportunities.
Management consultant
Alexandra Nott and lawyer
Camille Wrightson have brought
the national app to Christchurch.
“We’ve been so blown away
by the calibre and range of the
organisations we’ve talked to so
far,” said Ms Nott.
Christchurch listings
include Tiptree Cottage Trust,
Christchurch Youth Council,
Supporting Families In Mental
Illness Canterbury, Big Brothers
Big Sisters, Māia Health
Foundation, Laura Ferguson
Trust and the Breast Cancer
Foundation.
There are also nation-wide
listings. Christchurch is the
fourth region to get the app,
following Wellington, Nelson
and Hamilton.
Art work’s hefty cleaning bill
• By Julia Evans
A SCULPTURE of stairs leading
to nowhere at the Botanic
Gardens’ information centre lake
could become a permanent part
of the city’s public art collection.
But ratepayers will have to
keep forking out $700 a month
to clean it.
The work, Diminish and
Ascend by Auckland artist
David McCracken, was installed
temporarily in the lake in 2016
as part of the SCAPE Public Art
season.
Today city councillors are set
to discuss recommendations to
make the sculpture permanent.
“Maintenance is currently
being undertaken and paid for
out of the city council artworks
budget at the expense of
maintenance of other art works.
It is currently costing $700-$760
per month to maintain,” a staff
report said.
As the stairs are in the middle
of the lake, gaining access and
cleaning off the duck excrement
several times a week means the
maintenance costs are high.
Since it was installed, more
than $11,000 has been spent on
its upkeep.
The location also protects the
artwork from vandalism and
ART WORK: Diminish and Ascend could have a
permanent home in the Botanic Gardens. While Spire
may have its lease extended in Latimer Square.
people climbing it, the report
said.
The city council is contributing
$50,000 of the $192,000 needed
to purchase and install the work.
The rest of the funding has come
from sponsorship.
City councillors will also
decide whether or not to extend
the lease of another public
art work – Spire in Latimer
Square – until the end of next
year. Christchurch artist Neil
Dawson’s work has been in the
square since 2014, when he selffunded
the work and installed
it himself, but his lease has run
out.
“Mr Dawson is looking to
relocate the Spire to a permanent
location and would appreciate
if the city council would permit
him to retain the sculpture at
this location until the end of
2019. He has indicated that if
a permanent location is found
earlier he would remove it,” the
report said.
The work is based on the
Christ Church Cathedral,
to reflect its loss during the
February 22, 2011 earthquake.
