It’s with a mixture of warmth and sadness that we

welcome you to this, the November/December

“Christmas” edition of Northampton Local

magazine, for this will be the final edition.

It’s been an absolute pleasure pulling together

each edition of the magazine for your to enjoy

over the past four and a half years and we’d like to

thank all those who’ve supported us since we

started back in May 2014. We’ve enjoyed great

support from a host of regular advertisers though

also from many who’ve contributed over the years

with the submission of regular feature articles,

poems and competitions, etc.

We’re also extremely proud to have helped so

many charitable organisations during this time,

including Diabetes UK and Alzheimer’s Society in particular, two very special

charities close to our hearts. We are delighted in this final edition to be giving away

a whopping 100 Tickets to this year’s Festive Gift Fair at the NEC. If you’d like to

win a pair of tickets, why not enter our Prize Draw competition (full details on pages

50 & 51). Also up for grabs is “Tea for Two” in our

ever popular Pub Quiz competition as well as a

£25 Vue Cinema Gift Voucher in our regular “Quick

Quiz” competition, courtesy of Northampton

Advanced Motorists.

We sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed reading each

edition of the magazine as much as we’ve enjoyed

putting each together.

A massive thank you for supporting us over the

years and I’d like to take this opportunity to wish

our advertisers, our delivery personnel and all of

our readers a very Merry Christmas and very best

wishes for a prosperous and very Happy New

Year.

From the team at Northampton Local x

I saw a man on a

back of his shirt it said

“If you can read this, the

I just wrote a book on

reverse psychology.

Don’t buy it.

Have you heard of

Why does my wife

The old man stood

completely alone, head

bowed, closed eyes

damming the tears.

His shadow cast upon the

war memorial, almost

highlighting some of the

names.

Flags hung limply at halfmast

on the dul l

November morning.

Heavy with mist,

contrasting the gloom,

Does he think of the

words?

They shall not grow old

as we grow old, and, This

is their finest hour.

Does he think of the

mere boys who lie in

poppied fields, never to

fulfil their life or even

justify their existence?

Does he think of the guns

and explosions, the mud,

the cold, the smell of

death?

Or does he look at his

torn trousers, thin coat

and old worn out shoes,

and think, they will not

grow old as I grow old

They had their finest hour

Then wistfully look for his

names engraved in gold

on the gleaming marble.

Perhaps he thinks that

not all heroes died.

WINTER

When winter’s at it’s coldest,

when North winds cut like knives,

I think of all that’s hiding such as

bees within their hives.

Or squirrels curled in twiggy dreys

and rabbits beneath ground,

hares huddled up in grassy sets

trying never to be found.

Chrysalis of butterflies, frozen to

the core. Awaiting summers

welcome warmth to spread their

wings once more.

Badgers and the foxes way below

the soil, snug and warm they’re

dreaming of the coming

springtime toil.

The brown bare trees stand with

hunched backs, the sap dormant

and still. Perhaps they hear, as I

can hear, the Robin’s delightful

trill.

As I tramp through snowy fields

and frozen woodland ways, I

dream of spring, it’s waking up

and all those warming days.

Less than half of the eligible population in the East Midlands

receive NHS Health Checks that help spot diabetes

Millions miss out on vital health checks that could save lives

Recent analysis from Diabetes UK shows that less than half of over 40s in the East Midlands

eligible for an NHS Health Check in the last five years have actually received one.

Launched in England in 2009, the programme offers a five-yearly check-up to everyone aged 40

to 74 with the aim of spotting the early signs of Type 2 diabetes, stroke, kidney disease, heart

disease and dementia.

Between 2013 and 2018,

the population of people

eligible to receive an NHS

Health Check in England

totalled 15.5 million, but

only 6.8 million (44 per

cent) went on to receive

one. In the East Midlands,

of 1.4 million eligible only

656,000 (47 per cent)

received a check.

There is significant

variation of NHS Health

Checks across the East

Midlands. Leicester is the best performing area in the region with more than three quarters (76.4

per cent) of the eligible population receiving a health check, Lincolnshire is at 64.7 per cent,

Rutland is at 54.8 per cent and Leicestershire is at 50 per cent.

The worst performing areas are Nottingham at 27.1 per cent, Derby at 34.2 per cent,

Nottinghamshire at 37.4 per cent, Northamptonshire at 37.4 per cent and Derbyshire at 44.8 per

cent.

Since 2013, local authorities have a legal duty to ‘seek continuous improvement’ in the numbers

of people in their area having a health check, with funding from the ring-fenced public health

grant. However, only 55 local authorities delivered more NHS Health Checks in 2017-2018 than

they did in 2015-2016, while the remaining 97 delivered fewer.

Diabetes UK is urging local authorities to do more to get people to their

health check, as this is a vital route for referral into the NHS Diabetes

Prevention Programme for those who are found to be at high risk of Type

2 diabetes.

There are 12.3 million people at increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and

knowing their risk could help them prevent the onset of the condition. It is also

estimated that there are nearly 1 million people currently living with Type 2 diabetes

who don’t know they have it because they haven’t been diagnosed.

Peter Shorrick, Midlands and East of England Regional Head at Diabetes UK, said

“The success of the programme in certain areas is due to local councils working hard

to make it easier for people to attend these free health checks that only take 15

minutes and can help keep people healthy.

It is absolutely vital that all people who are eligible in every area get a health check.

If left undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes can lead to devastating complications, including

blindness, amputations, stroke and kidney failure, but with the right treatment and

support people living with the condition can lead a long, full and healthy life.”

To find out your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, go to

https://www.diabetes.org.uk/riskscore

people than any other serious health condition in the UK - more than dementia and cancer

combined. There is currently no known cure for any type of diabetes. With the right

treatment, knowledge and support people living with diabetes can lead a long, full and

healthy life. For more information about diabetes and the charity’s work, visit

www.diabetes.org.uk. Diabetes is a condition where there is too much glucose in the blood

because the body cannot use it properly. If not managed well, both Type 1 and Type 2

diabetes can lead to devastating complications. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of

preventable sight loss in people of working age in the UK and is a major cause of lower limb

amputation, kidney failure and stroke.

People with Type 1 diabetes cannot produce insulin. About 10 per cent of people with

diabetes have Type 1. No one knows exactly what causes it, but it’s not to do with being

overweight and it isn’t currently preventable. It’s the most common type of diabetes in

children and young adults, starting suddenly and getting worse quickly. Type 1 diabetes is

treated by daily insulin doses - taken either by injections or via an insulin pump. It is also

recommended to follow a healthy diet and take regular physical activity.

People with Type 2 diabetes don’t produce enough insulin or the insulin they produce

doesn’t work properly (known as insulin resistance). Around 90 per cent of people with

diabetes have Type 2. They might get Type 2 diabetes because of their family history, age

and ethnic background puts them at increased risk. They are also more likely to get Type 2

diabetes if they are overweight. It starts gradually, usually later in life, and it can be years

before they realise they have it. Type 2 diabetes is treated with a healthy diet and increased

physical activity. In addition, tablets and/or insulin can be required.

helping a child

smile again

That’s our kind

of fostering

nfa is currently

recruiting foster carers

Good foster carers provide a safe, nurturing family environment where children

with traumatic early experiences can flourish.

Do you have the time and energy to invest in a child or young person?

You will need a bedroom for the exclusive use of the child and we will provide

you with all the support you need so together we can make a difference.

We would like to share with you a wonderful poem written by Chelsea, a young

person who has been placed with one of NFA’s carers in Lincolnshire. Chelsea

explores a difficult time in her life throughout the poem and the effects that

fostering has had, helping her to develop strong, loving relationships.

The relationships were horrible. Then everything was terrible.

Heartbroken was how I felt all the time. Then turned into the worst crime.

Every day I was so depressed. And everything turned into a mess.

Smashing the house was the worst thing I’d done. And it was really not that fun.

The feeling of the police at my bedroom window. All of a sudden, I felt really low.

My life.

Falling out with my family what can I do, a nice fresh start and something new.

I had enough so I went to London. The whole thing felt terrifying and I felt done in.

That night we all got high, I felt I was dancing in the sky.

Hearing my name on the news. Got me shaking in my shoes.

My life.

I walked in the doors and it felt like a prison. The whole 7 months felt like a mission.

Upset was the worst thing I’ve felt. I just wanted to hide and melt.

How can depression make you feel so sad? I thought it won’t make you feel so bad.

For the first few weeks I was annoyed. Everything around made me feel destroyed.

My life.

Leaving the place was such an achievement. So happy I thought I was dreaming.

Foster care was a whole new place. Like I won my first 100-mile race.

Loved is the first thing I felt. Wrapped around tightly like a seat belt.

After all of this we made up. Finally, after this horrible break up.

Our relationships are stronger than before. We love each other more and more.

My life.

Be Amazing!

It will also help those who experience difficulty with certain

roads and situations. Things they may actively avoid.

Motorways for example, or multi-lane roundabouts, both

present problems for some people. Those who undertake

the course find it gives them much greater driving

confidence. They often comment on just how much they

have learned about driving. Things they were previously

unaware of - even with many years of driving experience.

Be a gamechanger for people with

dementia in Northamptonshire

Helen Crawford, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager

for Northamptonshire

Dementia awareness has come a long way in the last few years and we’re seeing an

increasing number of people coming to us asking what they can do to help. I’d like to

let you know about two opportunities which won’t use up a lot of your time, but which

could make a real difference to the 8000 people in Northamptonshire who are living with

dementia.

The first is GameChanger,

which Alzheimer’s Society

has recently launched

alongside the University of

Oxford. This aims to advance

dementia research through

the use of technology.

The GameChanger research

team has developed a

smartphone ‘app’. It contains

a collection of memory and

thinking games that test

specific parts of the brain. It

is these parts of the memory

and thinking that are thought

to be affected during the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

Before we can spot the early signs of dementia, we need to understand the healthy

brain. That’s where GameChanger can help. In the short term, we need as many

people as possible to download the app and play the games. From the data, dementia

researchers can see what average performance is like. This will eventually help them

see the early changes in the brains of people with dementia, and develop new

treatments.

We need people who do not have dementia to play free games on their smartphone for

five minutes a day for one month. You can sign up at www.joingamechanger.org

We’re asking businesses, schools and other organisations in Northampton to sign up

and raise money on December 7 th to help tackle the biggest health challenge we face

today.

You can keep it simple with red and green, or jingle all the way with pointy ears and

curly shoes. If fancy dress isn’t your thing, why not express yoursELF by baking frosted

goodies or playing festive games instead? Sign up at:

POEM CORNER

TOUCHING TOMORROW

Poem donated by David Garrett

49

We are touching tomorrow as tomorrow is

touching me, Into the future I ride

apprehensive, time is carrying me bodily.

Once I stood still and watched the world in

front hover. Now I have caught it up at last and

I’m among its future, time is travelling fast.

Too fast to contemplate change, I am

comfortable in my rut. Let the world carry on

without me, keeping the door of the future

firmly shut.

I knew where I was in the past among the

simple pleasures I once knew. Now pleasures

are decided for me, where I go or what I do.

Yes, time has got a stranglehold now the future

is the present, the past does not exist. There

looms another future, another non event.

Give me the quiet stillness I once knew when I

in my childhood played, deserted streets and

pavements, the future yet unmade.

Two thousand and something used to be

science fiction, years ago. Now it is science

fact and among science fact or fiction I now go.

Watching man transverse the world, distance

conquered and brought down. Travelling

throughout the universe but difficult to reach

the other end of town.

ROADRUNNER ROCKS AS NORTHAMPTON

SAILABILITY SAILS FOR GOLD!

Northampton Sailability capped a memorable summer as 19 people got on the water for the

disability sailing group’s annual Sail For Gold Regatta on Saturday (15 September) before a

number of new members, volunteers and fundraisers pledged to get involved as Sailability attracted

unprecedented attention at Rockin’ Roadrunner Festival in Abington Park on Sunday (16

September).

The group’s annual Sail for Gold event and BBQ, inspired by and run since the London 2012

Olympics, gives all sailors, helpers and volunteers the chance to sign off the season in style with a

competitive and fun racing event that enables the season’s newcomers to compete alongside

Northampton Sailability’s more experienced racers. Two-person Hansa boats are used to ensure

everyone can compete on a level playing field.

Meanwhile, more people than ever flocked to see Northampton Sailability at Rockin’ Roadrunner as

the addition of the RYA Midlands' ‘have-a-go’ dinghy simulator captured the imaginations of allcomers,

especially the kids! Sailability gives everyone of all abilities the chance to discover the

physical and mental freedom that being on the water brings. Getting active afloat develops

confidence as people learn new skills, enables independence that many don’t have on dry land and

opens doors to friendships and a social life when chronic loneliness is all too common amongst

disabled people.

Allan Henson, from Northampton Sailability, said: “It was a such a

successful weekend. The Sail for Gold racing and social really brought

home just what everyone involved in Sailability has achieved over this

summer, from the sailors themselves to everyone who makes it happen

behind the scenes.

“Rockin’ Roadrunner then surpassed all our previous expectations as

people of all abilities and ages wanted to have a go on the simulator and

a sit in the other boat we bought along to showcase how sailing is made

accessible for disabled people. A number of people said they would like

to join us as well as some potential helpers, who actually stated the days

on which they would come along to see how we operate, so it was very

positive.” Northampton Sailability is part of the national RYA Sailability

programme, which through its network of 200 groups and clubs

throughout the UK has enabled more than 60,000

disabled people to experience sailing with around

18,000 now sailing regularly.

Around 25-30 people regularly get on the water at

each Northampton Sailability session as the club

offers a wide-range of specially-adapted boats, so

anyone can just turn up and go sailing, and a host

of different activities to appeal to all, from joy

rides around the reservoir to people gaining RYA

learn to sail certificates in dinghy and keelboat

sailing and getting involved in competitive racing.
