WELCOME TO
Sheboygan
County
Like many cities, villages, lakes and
rivers throughout Wisconsin, the name
Sheboygan means “passage or waterway
between the lakes.” Some historians
believe it to be Ojibwa, while other
authorities speculate that it derived from
a Chippewa word. Whatever its origin,
the name is as unique and interesting as
the region it covers.

Urban Living
For those who love to be in the thick
of things, Sheboygan’s urban living options
put you right in the mix of excellent dining,
the farmers’ market, concert events, specialty
shops, the new arts & culture space and the
renowned John Michael Kohler Arts Center.
Plus, Lake Michigan is only blocks away
with four miles of sand beach.
Like many communities,
Sheboygan has refurbished historic
factories and warehouses into loft and
modern industrial-style apartments.
The Jung and Leverenz families
played an important role in the
development of Sheboygan’s economy,
operating successful shoe manufacturing
businesses for decades. The Jung building,
listed on the National Register of Historic
Places, was redeveloped in 1992 into
53 apartments. Refurbished in 1992,
the four-story Leverenz building offers
one- and two-bedroom apartments and
18 indoor parking stalls.
Another factory building, the
historic Garton Toy Factory, has also been
converted to modern apartments. Garton
was once the largest wheeled toy factory
in the world. Nearly every child in
Sheboygan had a Garton wagon, sled,
tricycle, scooter or pedal car.
Urban living in Sheboygan also
beautifully refurbished homes, many
with unique and classic features.

Cooler By the Lake
Natural beauty is something
we’re pretty proud of here in
Sheboygan County. Along with Lake
Michigan, Sheboygan County has more
than 30 bodies of water including lakes,
rivers and ponds.
The Lake Michigan shoreline in
Sheboygan County spans 26 miles. From
urban apartments and condos to beachfront
and bluff homes, the views of Lake
Michigan are stunning. Broughton Drive
along the lakefront is a busy thoroughfare
of activity for families, joggers and people
out walking with their four-legged pals.
Away from the Great Lake, there
are six lakes within the county that require
boating permits. A few of the lakes have
Sunday motor restrictions, which provide
a great day for some peaceful kayaking,
paddle boarding, sailing and swimming.
For those who want to be on the water,
there are a wide range of converted
cottages, condos and year-round homes
on the lakeshores and riverbanks
throughout the county.
Green Acres
There are an estimated 36,000
Sheboygan County residents who live in
rural areas, so if country living is your style,
this area has much to offer. You can reside
in a small village or way out in the country

The peaceful countryside of

Plymouth
HISTORIC
HUB CITY
Plymouth, a little jewel of a city
teeming with lovely architectural treasures
and beautiful Cream City brick buildings,
is nestled on the Mullet River among the
rolling hills of the Kettle Moraine.
Originally called Ta-quit-qui-oc
(Crooked River) by the local Indians,
Plymouth was surveyed in 1835 by United
States engineers. Settlers trickled in, including
Isaac Thorp, who named the town after
Plymouth, Connecticut, in honor of the city
where his sweetheart had lived and died.
At the center of this historically
charming city is Mill Street, brimming

A GARDEN COMMUNITY
The Village of Kohler was founded

Kohler Co., a worldwide leader in
plumbing products, built a plant at the
location. The company eventually became
a world-class hospitality destination,
boasting the 2017 Forbes Five-Star

Incorporated in 1912, the

Walter J. Kohler, son of Kohler Co. founder

as a garden/industrial community. Artful
village with an emphasis on natural and
historic preservation and mindful design
for residential and commercial growth.
The village received botanic

American Public Gardens Association and

There is breathtaking beauty to
behold in Wisconsin’s four seasons. From

at night, there are plenty of ways to enjoy
every season in Sheboygan County.
The Beauty of Winter
The winters can seem long and
cold, but the best thing you can do is to
love. And that’s where you’re in luck. For
downhill ski and snowboard enthusiasts,
there are several ski hills within an hour’s
drive. For cross-country skiing, there are
trails in parks and golf courses throughout
the county. The classic and skate ski trails
in the Kettle Moraine State Forest in

Segue into Summer
Our summer weather is ideal.

Fall Favorites
When the nights

Climbing the Parnell Tower to see the fall

bicyclists and cars tool along the winding,
wooded roads to take it all in.

BOREDOM BLASTERS
Over the last decade, Sheboygan
has emerged as the Fresh Water Surf
Capital of the World. For those learning
to surf, the summer months are the best.
Seasoned surfers enjoy the peak season of
mid-September through April. When winds
of 20-25 mph blow from the northeast
or west-southwest, incredible waves are
sculpted from the surface water. Several
times a year, Lake Michigan produces an
open water swell of 24 feet or better. For
those wanting a more leisurely experience,
our lakeshores are busy with standup
paddle boarding (SUP). Sheboyganites
enjoy SUPing on Lake Michigan, Elkhart

Child Care
There are many child care
and pre-school options available
your needs, your schedule and your
budget. The Child Care Resource &
Referral Center, based in Kimberly,
Wisconsin, provides parents and
guardians with information on all
licensed day care in Sheboygan County.
The Family Resource Center
in Plymouth is a “Parents as Teachers”
for Youth coalition for healthy living and
the Sheboygan County Literacy Council.
Family Connections, Inc.
is a local Child Care Resource &
Referral agency that strives to increase
the availability and accessibility of child
care programs, promote recognition
of childcare issues and encourage
development.
There are many pre-school
options including 3K and 4K.
Check with your community school
district, local YMCAs, Generations
in Plymouth and the John Michael
Kohler Arts Center.
Pet Care
If you have a canine pal, there are
a number of dog parks where you can play
and socialize.
Sheboygan Dog Run is 10-acre
fenced-in dog run in Sheboygan funded by
donations. It allows owners to let dogs off
their leash under voice control. It’s a great
place to socialize your dog and let them
stretch their legs safely. Sheboygan Falls
Bark Park is a 1-acre park located within
Rochester Park. There’s also a dog park in
Plymouth in the downtown business district
along the Mullet River. The north side of
Kohler-Andrae State Park has dog-friendly
access on trails and even on the beach.
If you’re looking for a place to
keep your large pets, Sheboygan County
has horse boarding, large animal clinics
and even hobby farms to keep your pets
happy and healthy.

Get Out of Town! Traveling to almost anything in Sheboygan County never takes much more than 20 minutes, tops.
But taking a trip to bigger cities for a special outing is a breeze too. Downtown Chicago? Only two hours away. Milwaukee
is less than an hour’s drive down Interstate 43 while Green Bay (yay Packers!) is less than an hour north. Madison is about
two hours away, but if you have the time, taking the back roads through the Horicon Marsh is a gorgeous alternative.
