Rarey inducted into Groveport Hall of Honor
Former Groveport City Councilman Ed Rarey was
inducted into the Groveport Hall of Honor on Oct. 21.
The Hall of Honor, established by Mayor Lance
Westcamp in 2006, is located inside the Groveport
Recreation Center. Plaques detailing each inductee’s
accomplishments are on display in the hallway
between the two gymnasiums.
The purpose of the Hall of Honor is to recognize
individuals (living or deceased) who through their performance
and achievements (volunteer service, public
service, athletic endeavors or other related service)
reflect credit on the city of Groveport so citizens may
find identity with the past and establish goals for the
future. Other members of the Hall of Honor include
Eric Smith, John Frye, Jim McKee and Kathy Frank.
Rarey, born in 1929, is a life-long resident of
Groveport. He graduated from Groveport High School
in 1948 and lettered in track
and football. He attended
Otterbein College, earning a
bachelor’s degree in education in
1952. While in college, he played
center on the football team.
After graduation, he taught
math and science for five years
until he became a principal at
Gahanna Lincoln Elementary
School where he served until
1990. Along the way, he also
earned a master’s degree in education
from Ohio State
University. He coached track
and field for 61 years and cross
country for 30 years. He earned
many state and national coaching
awards over the
years.
Rarey was elected
to Groveport Village
Council in 1993 and
served until March
2017. While on council
he was a strong
proponent for parks
and recreation. He
helped to spearhead
the purchase of the
land for Groveport
Park and Cruiser
Park. He served on
committees supporting
the design and

construction of the
Groveport Recreation/Senior
Center and Aquatic Center. He supported
the purchase of the once private golf club, The Willows
Golf Course. The 18 hole course re-opened as a public
course, The Links At Groveport, in 2006. He was an
advocate of the city’s sidewalk program and wanted
the city of Groveport to be connected to the Metro
Parks Trail System, which led to the construction of
the Foor Leisure Path. He was instrumental in the
city’s new water plant, which became operational in
July 2015 and provides water to approximately half of
city residents.
As a resident, Rarey volunteered his time by serving
on the Groveport Heritage and Preservation
Society, Cemetery Committee and Groveport Madison
High School Alumni Committee.

Griefshare support group:
Surviving the Holidays
Groveport United Methodist Church,
512 Main St., Groveport, will offer
GriefShare: Surviving the Holidays, from
1-3 p.m. on Dec. 8. The program is a seminar
for people facing the holidays after a
loved one’s death. It features video interviews
with counselors, grief experts and
others who have experienced the holidays
after a death. Refreshments and workbook
provided. Registration is not required but
helpful.

“Fantastic Mr. Fox,” at 7 p.m. on Nov. 9-11;
“Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella at
7 p.m. on April 26-27 and 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Constitution Hawks
The Constitution Hawks, a group of citizens
looking to advance knowledge of the
United States Constitution and related
matters, meets the second Tuesday of each
month in the Peace Free Lutheran Church

Winchester, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Sweet Adeline concert
The women’s barbershop chorus, Sweet
Adeline, will sing a variety of seasonal
favorites on Dec. 1 from 6:15- p.m. at
Groveport Town Hall, 648 Main St. Come
and enjoy the sounds of the season, barbershop
style. This is a free concert for all ages.
A Heritage Holiday
Groveport’s “A Heritage Holiday” will be
held Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 in Heritage Park,
551 Wirt Road. Santa will arrive by fire
truck at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 30. The
Groveport Madison High School Band will
play holiday music and there will be ice
carving, carriage rides, children’s crafts,
and refreshments. On Dec. 1 from noon to
3 p.m. visit with Santa and enjoy refreshments,
carriage rides, farm animal
encounter, kid’s crafts and live reindeer.
