an established local ballet company under the artistic
direction of Vanessa Rae Voter, has staged The Nutcracker
for over twenty-five years. Principal roles are performed by
members of Methuen Ballet Ensemble, whose experience
totals over 150 years of classical ballet training under Ms.
Voter’s tutelage. This year’s production will also feature
Guest Artist James Kramlich of Portland Ballet in the roles
of Snow King and Sugar Plum Cavalier. Mr. Kramlich
has been a Company Dancer with Portland Ballet since
2014. Notable roles with the company include Party
REGIONAL – Two and a half years ago
Mitch Cohen’s life had hit bottom. An
alcoholic, he had tried rehabilitation and
detoxification programs for a decade, but
none of his efforts had worked.
“I kept trying and trying. Nothing took,”
he said.
As he described it last week, Cohen, now
40, would wake up with a vodka, go through
his day drinking vodka and lull himself to
sleep with vodka.
A friend, worried about him, brought
Cohen to the attention of the Pelican
Intervention Fund. One of the co-founders,
Elizabeth McCarthy, telephoned him to
invite him to accept the organization’s gift
of three months in a 12-step rehabilitation
program at the Brook Retreat on Cape Cod.
The program worked for him. Today, he
works full-time in construction, counsels
other addicts on weekends and is getting
married.
To say thank you to Pelican and McCarthy,
his “guardian angel,” Cohen is offering his
NEWBURYPORT – When
Mayor Donna Holaday flew to
San Francisco in September to
meet with California Gov. Jerry
Brown and city leaders from
around the world, it was no routine
conference.
She joined 22 other cities in
pledging to cut the trash her
constituents generate by 15 percent
and reduce the amount of waste
sent to landfills by 50 percent in
just 12 years.
To meet that commitment, every
household in this community can
expect significant changes including
rising costs, in the disposal of their
weekly trash.
The need to change the city’s
trash disposal is driven by a carrot
and a stick. The mayor would like
for Newburyport to be a model city
in implementing environmentally
friendly programs. The city is also
facing a stiff increase in the cost of
trash collection.
The contract with G. Mello
Corp. to pick up the city’s trash
pickup next year was increased by
$300,000, a 23 percent hike from
$1.1 million to $1.4 million. And
the city expects that more increases
are coming as landfills fill up and
recycling disposal sites in China
and elsewhere refuse to accept
America’s recycling.
Residents currently pay a flat rate
for trash collection as part of their
water/sewer bills.
To orchestrate the changes in
waste collection, Holaday has
tasked her Molly Ettenborough,
the city’s recycling and energy
manager, who accompanied her to
San Francisco, to develop a plan
for reducing waste.
“We need to make changes,”
Ettenborough said.
Last March, the mayor also
appointed a 12-member Waste
Stream Task Force, headed by Art
Currier, to cut the amount of trash
the community generates and to
contain the rising costs of disposal.
“We’re seeking a program that
is best for the whole community,”
Currier said.
The committee has been
meticulously studying a long list
Newburyport Trash Collection Expected To Change
Continued from page 1
of issues and challenges involved
in waste reduction and hopes to
present a plan to the mayor and
city council members early next
year.
Ettenborough and Currier
agreed that the community faces
three options:
maintain the status quo, which
looks like it will become too
expensive to sustain;
go to a full pay-as-you-throw
program where residents can use
only purchased trash bags;
create a hybrid of the current
collection system with some payas-you-throw
components.
Currier believes the hybrid
system, which currently lacks a
catchy name, is the most likely
option for the city. But even this
option will require significant
changes in the way residents
dispose of their trash.
The premise behind the pay-asyou-throw
system is that residents
will decide they can spend less
money on their trash if they buy
fewer bags. That means they have
to find other ways to dispose of
trash.
The city of Sanford, ME, which
began its pay-as-you-throw system
in 2013, told residents that its
system encourages more recycling,
Continued from page 1
special skill to help raise money. A
two-state champion weight lifter
and record holder for his weight
class, Cohen will compete in the
Revolution Powerlifting Syndicates
Championships on Dec. 1 and 2 in
Lebanon, NH.
Supporters are invited to donate
money to the Pelican Intervention
Fund through what Cohen calls
“Pounds for Pelican.” He has already
raised more than $2,000, much of
it from friends in the construction
industry, and hopes to double or
triple that amount.
He also hopes he can demonstrate
through powerlifting and rebuilding
his life that others can also defeat
addiction.
Pelican, founded by McCarthy
and Kim and Steven Keene, is
celebrating its third anniversary this
month. The organization has funded
35 men and women who needed
help in defeating their addiction,
spending $5,000 each for three
months of rehabilitation in one of
two carefully selected programs for
men and two for women.
The fund, which advocates the
12-step recovery program, has
been recognized as the 2018 Non-
Profit Organization of the Year
by the Newburyport Chamber
of Commerce and as Unsung
Heroines of Massachusetts and the
Asset Builders Award from the state
House of Representatives.
thus reducing the city’s disposal
costs, and fairly distributes costs
proportionally among residents
who create more trash.
It asked its residents, “Do
you really want to pay for your
neighbors’ trash?”
In Sanford, residents purchase
an 8-gallon bag for $1, a 15-gallon
bag for $1.25 and a 33-gallon bag
for $2. It is too early in the process
to determine how much trash bags
in Newburyport might cost.
To reduce the need for bags,
Currier said residents will be
encouraged to compost as much
of their organic material. He said
studies show that about 45 percent
of all household wastes can be
composted, including an estimated
375 tons annually of dog waste.
Even before the city launches
its new program, residents can
have their organic waste carted
away by subscribing with a
Gloucester company, Black Earth,
which provides weekly pickups
for households and businesses on
the North Shore. A subscription
for the pickup service costs $10 a
month or $100 a year.
Residential organic materials is
placed in a 13-gallon bin, which is
leased for $24.
Currier said Newburyport in
reducing trash “would be doing the
right thing.”
He admits it will take a lot of
education to change the behavior
of residents who are accustomed
to rolling out their regular trash
weekly and recycling waste every
other week.
The changes start in the kitchen,
where instead of having two
trash containers under the sink,
households will have three. Currier
said most kitchens will add a third
bin for food and other organic
waste, which will have to be placed
Mayor Holaday said,
“Newburyport is proud to join
cities and mayors across the globe
to address the critical need to
reduce and advance our work
towards zero waste. Each city that
steps up to join these efforts will
make a real difference today and as
we plan for the future health of our
communities.”
For the near future, Newburyport
is unlikely to achieve zero waste,
but Ettenborough said it is possible
for residents who work with a
company like Terracycle out of
New Jersey.
“If you want to get to zero waste
in Newburyport, you can,” she
said. “But it takes real discipline
and a lot of information.”
“I had a lot of abandonment
State Rep. Jim Kelcourse, R-
Amesbury, who nominated
McCarthy and Keene for the state
legislative awards, secured a $15,000
appropriation for Pelican in the
state budget to combat the disease
of addiction. Kelcourse also ran in
his first Boston Marathon this year
in support of Pelican’s mission.
Cohen’s sobriety date is Aug. 2,
2016.
“My journey began in April
2016. I was lost, discouraged and
felt completely broken. The Pelican
Intervention Fund enabled me to
go to a safe place away from all
the distractions back at home. For
the next three months I was at the
Brook Retreat in Plympton. Those
three months changed my life
forever,” he wrote.
He attributes his success to
following the 12-step program to
recovery. When he reached the
fourth step, the counselors helped
him face the root causes of his anger
that fueled his addiction. Instead of
the 10 or 15 names he expected to
list, he wrote down 150 individuals
and organizations that he felt had
wronged him.
When he looked at the list, he
realized it was less them and more
him that had caused his pain and
rage. His core issues involved a
troubled childhood, being shuttled
around an alcoholic family and
being sent to a military school at 11
years old.
issues,” he said. “Through writing
and working the 12 steps of recovery
I was able to deal with and let go of
those core issues.”
The Linx House, which was one
of the names on his list, welcomed
him back and invited him to work
with other addicts. While living
and working at the Linx House
with 18 guys, he found his love of
powerlifting. He and other men
lifted weights in the afternoon,
helping ease some of the stress they
felt in recovery.
Cohen and a friend, John, took
powerlifting to the competitive level.
Last year, Cohen lifted a total of
1,350 pounds combined in a squat,
bench press and dead lift. His goal
this year is 1,500 pounds “assuming
my back holds up,” he said.
He admits he is no match for his
friend, John, a recovering alcoholic,
who can bench press 530 pounds.
“We are blessed guys,” Cohen
said.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You enjoy the attention early
in the week, but it might be a good idea to opt for some privacy
by week’s end so that you can have more time to consider an
upcoming decision.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You unearth some surprising
facts. Now you need to consider how to use them to your
advantage. Meanwhile, it might be best to keep what you’ve
learned secret for now.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A comment by a colleague
piques your curiosity to know more. Best advice: You’ll find
people more likely to offer information if you’re discreet when making your inquiries.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your energy levels begin to rise by midweek. This allows you to catch up
with your heavy workload and still have plenty of get-up-and-go to go
out on the town this weekend.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re probably roaring your head off
about a perceived slight from a longtime critic. Ignore it. That person
might just be trying to goad you into doing something you might later
regret.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The early part of the week is
open to spontaneity. Then it’s time to settle into your usual routine
to get all your tasks done. A personal situation could require more
attention from you.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A meeting of the minds on a
workplace project might well develop into something more personal
for Librans looking for romance. Aspects also are favorable for platonic
relationships.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A more-positive mood
might be difficult to assume in light of a recent problem involving
the health of someone special. But by week’s end, your emotional
barometer should start to rise.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Look for a changed
attitude from a former adversary once he or she realizes you have your
colleagues’ full support. Now you can refocus your energies on that
workplace project.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This time, a difference
of opinion might not be resolved in your favor. But be patient. It could
all ultimately work out to your advantage, as new information begins
to develop.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A tug of war develops
between the artistic Aquarian’s creative aspect and his or her practical
side. Best advice: Prioritize your schedule so you can give appropriate
time to both.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You could be entering a career
phase awash with job-related demands. But avoid being swamped
by the overflow and, instead, keep treading water as you deal with
demands one by one.
BORN THIS WEEK: You are an exceptionally loyal person, and
you’re respected for your ability to keep the secrets entrusted to you.
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
Contrary to what many denturewearers
believe, dentures require
regular maintenance, including
relines, repairs, and replacement.
In fact, the average denture should
be relined every two to three years
and replaced every five to seven
years for the most optimal fitting
prosthesis. There are many reasons
for this maintenance interval and
for regular dental examinations,
whether or not the patient
perceives any problem.
The first problem has to do with
the basic function of the bone
surrounding natural teeth. Natural
teeth are held in their sockets by
thousands of “cables”, called the
periodontal ligament that tug and
pull on the supporting bone during
function. The bone is designed to
be strengthened and stimulated
in this manner. When the teeth
are removed, the bone no longer
has appropriate stimulation, and
shrinkage occurs unless it is directly
loaded again with dental implants.
Bone atrophy is accelerated by
inappropriate forces caused by
loose and ill-fitting dentures.
Relining, or replacing the
tissue surface of the denture,
The best thing about tai chi
(pronounced tie-chee) is that
it’s good exercise without being
strenuous. With its slow, gentle
movements, we can get our
stretching and muscle building
without overdoing it. But what
else can tai chi do for us?
For some of us, improved
balance is what we need the
most. A few years ago, a study
that analyzed previous research
concluded that tai chi improved
single-leg standing and overall
balance. Tai chi helps strengthen
leg muscles and increase range
of motion, but most of all it can
help us avoid dangerous falls.
Brighter Smiles...
DENTURE MAINTENANCE
helps preserve bone by adapting
dentures to the gums as they
shrink, but it is only helpful for
dentures that are otherwise in
good condition, which includes a
proper bite relationship. Relining
also helps to encourage health of
the soft tissues because dentures
plastic is porous and becomes
heavily laden with bacteria and
yeast over time. Relining refreshes
the tissue surface of dentures with
new acrylic. Sometimes a more
advanced type of relining, called
rebasing, is the treatment of choice
when all of the pink portion of a
denture is in poor condition and
needs to be replaced.
New dentures should be made
when relining or rebasing of
dentures can no longer re-establish
proper fit and function. Often this
is obvious by wear or fracture of
the denture teeth. When dentures
contribute to headaches or when
the patient’s face begins to look
“collapsed” or “old”, the need for
new dentures is likely.
Lastly, but certainly not of least
importance, denture wearers need
to stay current with regular dental
examinations for inspection of not
only the dentures but the tissue
for pre-cancerous lesions. Since
most people feel they do not need
to go to the dentist once they
have dentures, many early precancerous
lesions are missed.
Everyone is at risk for oral
cancer, whether they have teeth or
Senior Scene
According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention,
one in four of us will fall each
year, and falls are the leading
cause of death in Americans 65
and over.
Increased flexibility doesn’t
sound that earthshaking --
until you consider that it also
might affect the flexibility of
our arteries. In one study of
all age groups doing tai chi,
participants were asked to sit and
reach for their toes. It was the
seniors group where poor trunk
flexibility equated to stiffened
arteries.Ê
Another study concluded that
combining tai chi with an annual
flu shot boosts our protection
not. In fact, the constant “trauma”
and lack of blood circulation
caused by chronic denture wear
increases the risk for oral cancer
development. For this reason
alone, annual dental examinations
are recommended for denture
wearers.
Many patients with older
dentures report their dentures
fit fine. You can relate this to the
against the flu. Most of us already
get the higher dosage over-65
shot. When combined with the
immune system protections of
tai chi, we’re even more likely to
be able to avoid the flu.
Other important benefits are
stress relief, lower blood pressure
and alleviating pain from arthritis
and fibromyalgia.
Ask about tai chi classes at your
local senior center. If it offers
classes, watch one to see how you
like it. If they’re not offered, go
online to YouTube and sample
some of the videos you can do
at home. Also look for qi gong, a
form of tai chi.
