SOUTHERN VIEW Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday November 6 2018 11 News Local News Now Woolworths plans subdivision Fire rages, homes at risk Grand Designs host to help develop site • By Anan Zaki A SUPERMARKET chain wants to build laneways and “New York-style” apartments in Halswell, designed by the host of Grand Designs NZ. Woolworths NZ, which own grocery chains Countdown, FreshChoice and Super Value, lodged a resource consent application for a mixed-use development at a 21ha site at 201 Halswell Rd. The design team is led by Grand Chris Moller Designs NZ host Chris Moller. Public submissions opened on Wednesday and will remain open until November 28. The residential part of the development includes 248 dwellings, including 24 units of two level “New Yorkstyle” apartments, a covered COMMUNITY charitable trust, the Sumner Ferrymead Foundation, recently celebrated its 25th anniversary at the GoodHome Ferrymead. Three of the original trustees attended – George Scrimshaw, Max Percasky, and Julie Cunningham, who is still a serving trustee. The October 25 occasion also recognised Mrs Cunningham’s remarkable 25-year contribution to SFF. Since 1993, the foundation has given almost $100,000 in grants, which has extended financial assistance to those pursuing education, cultural or sporting swimming pool facility, extensive landscaping and 3.1991ha of reserve and stormwater detention areas. Said Countdown general manager property Adrian Walker: “In New York, these [apartments] were conversions of old brownstone factories but new replica-style buildings typically replicate the key characteristics of weathered brick, high stud and saw tooth roof.” endeavours, and also to community groups, who play an important role. The foundation was the vision of Sumner-born Dora Grut, who married a Canadian and moved to Vancouver. After returning to Canada from a 1991 visit home, she donated $10,500 to start a Sumner Community Trust, to be run along the lines of the Vancouver Foundation. The Vancouver Foundation started in 1943 with $1000 donated from receptionist Alice McKay’s savings. She had donated the money to assist the wives and families The commercial component of the proposal includes a Countdown supermarket, medical centre, cafe, childcare facility, retail space for 21 tenants, a tavern, 522 car parks, covered outdoor spaces, landscaping and lawn seating. There are no groundwater springs below the proposed site. The company lodged the resource consent application in December last year. of Vancouver soldiers killed in France during World War 2. A Vancouver businessman was impressed with her generosity and added a further $10,000, encouraging nine others to do likewise. That foundation, which began with $101,000, today exceeds one billion dollars. Similarly, since Dora Grut’s initial donation, the Sumner Ferrymead Foundation has grown significantly through the generosity of many local benefactors within the community. Only interest from the invested funds is used for grants, PLANNED: This 21ha site on Halswell Rd is currently covered in overgrown weeds but could soon have a subdivision with “New York-style” apartments. In its application, Woolworths said a dimension often missing in contemporary suburbs is a sense of community or collective life. The vision for the project includes a “village life” approach, which will be encouraged by lanes, bridleways and pocket parks. “The Halswell project is already zoned for residential and commercial as part of the larger Halswell key activity centre development to be built over the and the foundation considers applications from groups and individuals in a catchment area running from east of Tunnel Rd to Taylors Mistake. Donations to the foundation can be for a specific community use or asset, or for discretionary funds – all gratefully received as the trustees are looking to grow the fund. •Anyone wishing to donate, or requiring further information, could phone John Taylor 0274 326 972, or view the SFF website sumnerferrymead foundation.co.nz next 25 years,” Mr Walker said. This is not Woolworths NZ’s first foray into a mixed-use development. The company built 31 buildings in Vinegar Ln, in Ponsonby, Auckland. “We’re excited to bring a high quality development to Halswell,” Mr Walker said. A construction management plan is yet to be submitted. Should the resource consent be approved, construction would start about a year after a design and tender process.
