editorial

Welcome to a new issue of the Global Reggae Charts magazine!

This month we have a novelty; for the first time, we feature a producer instead of an artist. Admittedly

he is a great artist as well, but we think that his chart positions as a producer – he always has

at least one riddim in the top 5 riddims section – make him really worthy for this honor. We are

talking about Perfect Giddimani and his Giddimani Records. Also, we feature two very interesting

voters from different parts of the world that share not much more than a similar latitude. First we

have Misachael J. Solis, director of the CABINA420 radio in Mexico City; second, we have Evelise

Gomes aka Locka, who presents her Rockers radio show on Radio Morabeza in Cape Verde.

On the charts, we have a lot of fresh records. On the single charts, we have Alborosie at #1 and #2

followed by a few releases we’ve seen already over the past months. Bulby York with Christopher

Martin & Beenie Man is the first new entry at #7. More new entries coming from Protoje, Macka B,

Maxi Priest, Jah9, Sevana, and Hollie Cook. On the album charts, we have the same top 3 positions

followed by a new entry from Assassin aka Agent Sasco at #4. Further new albums are coming

from King Jammy & Dennis Brown, Groundation, Bulby York, Common Kings, and Black Uhuru.

Finally, we have 4 new entries on the riddim charts: Peng Peng Riddim, Artibella Riddim, Old Jack

Plug Riddim, and the Ancient Kingdom Riddim. Altogether a pretty solid turnover rate with 17/45

entries (in total) new.

We wish you an interesting study of the charts and the magazine.

All the best

Felix

WEB

RADIO

Mexico

global reggae charts

featured voter

INTERVIEW

This month we feature two of our voters. First we have

Misachael J. Solis, who is the director of a reggae webradio

station in Mexico called Cabina420 RADIO.

Global Reggae Charts: Please introduce yourself

and your radio show to our readers!

Misachael J. Solis: Hi, I‘m Misachael J. Solis from

Mexico City; I‘m the director of the radio station

Cabina420 RADIO, a station that has more than 30

radio programs and has radio shows from Argentina,

Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico.

GRC: What made you fall in love with reggae?

MJS: At an early age I felt a great attraction to

music. I took guitar lessons creating my first band at

the age of 16. Years later, I got involved with the DJ

culture, which I have continued until today, having

that musical restlessness and the constant search. It

came to my hands, rather, to my ears – music from

Marley – which opened the way for me to investigate

more about that cadenced sound, which created in

me an insatiable thirst to know more of that music

called reggae.

The way to balance my thoughts and ‘align my chakras’

is what makes reggae music a fundamental part

of my life.

GRC: Could you give a little insight into the

Mexican reggae scene?

The reggae scene in Mexico has grown exponentially

in recent years – it was long thought that in my

country there was not a reggae scene as such, now

that idea is totally false. There is a whole movement

that includes bands, DJs, soundsystems, media,

MCs, producers, promoters, and graphic artists that

make the reggae scene in Mexico be in constant, but

mainly healthy, growth.

GRC: How did you get into radio and what is your

motivation?

MJS: My desire to know music and a natural interest

in technical issues related to music led me to

study Audio Engineering, concluding the race I was

invited to produce a radio program on FM called

“Sonic Fluid.” Many years after that project ended,

the record label Tropic-All Disco invited the Sound

Fire On System – a crew to which I belong – to produce

a radio program specializing in reggae music

that we call “Cabina420 Radio Show.” The station

Tropic-All disappeared and an Internet radio project

called „Rastamania Radio“ invited us to be part of its

programming; after a couple of years, Rastamania

disappeared giving way to the creation of “Cabina420

RADIO.” Always, my motivation is to spread

the reggae music, either as a DJ, broadcaster, or

programmer on the radio.

GRC: What spectrum of music do you play in your

show, and which artists have you found most inspiring

lately?

MJS: Wow! This question is good for a broad answer,

I will try to answer in a simple way; the spectrum

of music that is programmed on the station

and on their respective radio shows is mainly reggae,

but with all its variants. The slogan of the station

is “A Global Radio with Sounds of the Ghetto,”

so it allows us to spread all the music created from

the roots, music that comes from the town, from the

neighborhood, independent music, and also from

already established artists, but always keeping in

mind the roots.

In the case of Cabina420 RADIO, because it is a

station with origins in Latin America, we give a lot

of diffusion to projects from countries like Argentina,

Colombia, Chile, and Mexico to mention a few, in the

same way we give out to European projects because

in these countries there are many fans of reggae

music that is made in countries like Germany, Italy,

France, or Spain.

Lately, projects like Kabaka Pyramid, Dactah Chando,

Havana Meets Kingston, or City Kay – they surprised

me, when I heard that fusion and experimentation

of sounds of diverse origins, it keeps me very motivated.

One more is the new album New Generation

from Groundation, it sounds really cool!

MJS: When I think about voting, I do it for projects

that I have heard and I have liked, either because

of their sound because they mix different musical

styles, but mainly because of its freshness – for me,

what sounds cool is very important.

GRC: Thank you for your time!

MJS: Gracias por siempre!

Perfect

Giddimani

Ever since his breakthrough hit ”Hand Cart Bwoy“ in 2004, Greg

Rose, a.k.a. Perfect Giddimani has been a household name on the international

reggae scene and a great live entertainer that you don’t

find every day. Besides his artist career, Perfect is also a producer

and releases via his own Giddimani Records label. So, since we started

the riddim charts section about a year ago, nearly every month

there is a Giddimani riddim album on the charts. Reason enough to

make Perfect Giddimani the first ”Producer of the Month.“

LOCAL

RADIO

Cape Verde

INTERVIEW

The second voter we feature this month is Evelise

Gomes aka Locka. She presents her show ”Rockers“ on

a local radio station in Mindelo, Cape Verde.

Global Reggae Charts: Please introduce yourself

and your radio show to our readers.

Locka: Thank you Boomrush Productions for the

opportunity to introduce my passion. My name is

Evelise Gomes, aka Locka, and I am the host of Rockers

radio show.

GRC: What made you fall in love with reggae?

L: I have been in love with reggae since I knew my

name – first it was because of the beat/swing and

then I started to listen to Bob Marley and translating

his lyrics, so I could not help to make it my favorite

genre of music. I feel it in my heart and soul.

GRC: Could you give a little insight into the reggae

scene of Cape Verde?

L: Cape Verdeans in general love reggae music,

especially here in Mindelo. There is not one international

artist that performs here who doesn’t go back

mesmerized by the love they get from the crowd.

We have a few local bands that are doing an excellent

job producing their original work, waiting for

an opportunity to show their skills internationally,

like Black Side and Domu Africa, plus many others

spread all over the world like Mo’Kalamity, Afrika

Rainbow, Rubera Roots Band, Nish Wadada, and Ras

Jahknow, just to name a few.

GRC: If I’m informed correctly, you lived in the US

for a while. When you compare the reggae scene in

both countries – how would you describe the differences?

L: Yes indeed, I lived in the USA for 25 years in

Massachusetts and California – reggae was always

present in my life. Every time I am asked if I miss the

US, my answer is ‘besides my family, I miss the concerts;’

although I listen to all kinds of music, I rarely

missed a reggae show. The difference is in the vibe.

In the US, most of the time it’s just another show for

the locals. In Mindelo, we have one/two roots reggae

shows a year, so we show massive love and appreciation.

The crowd waits patiently till sunrise if necessary

to watch a good reggae show.

GRC: How did you get into radio and what is your

motivation?

L: When I moved back home I noticed that reggae

was being played on the radios, but it was lacking

a solo time, so I proposed to Radio Morabeza to

volunteer one hour of my time to play my original

collection of hundreds of CDs I brought from the US,

till someone figured he must take them away from

me, so I lost everything. I am struggling to rebuild

my collection but I will keep Rockers alive with the

power of Jah. My motivation is the love I get from

Rockers fans, and the pleasure to be in the studio

and play good reggae music. I also enjoy informing

my listeners about reggae news and playing new

releases.

GRC: What spectrum of music do you play in your

show, and which artists have you found most inspiring

lately?

L: I play roots reggae. A lot of artists have been

inspiring me, but it’s hard to find a complete roots

reggae album lately. I’m very much inspired by Spiritual,

the album Awakening is massive, Alpha Blondy

just released amazing Human Race, Tiken Jah Fakoly

with Racines, Samory I, Iba Mahr, Chronixx, Protoje,

etc. Artists from Cape Verde: Black Side, Domu Afrika,

Afrika Rainbow, and Nish Wadada.
