From Mrs Hawtree: Principal
Dear GIS Community,
I hope that you and your family enjoyed the recent half term break.
When we made the decision, two years ago, to extend the half term break to two weeks, we were one of the
first schools in the SE Asia region to do this. We made this decision because from mid-August to mid-
December is one third of the year, and around 40% of the teaching year, and we know from experience that
tired students (and tired teachers!) do not make for effective learning.
Looking around the school just before the break, it was very clear that both staff and students were tired, a little
grumpy (!) and not working at their best – and it’s wonderful to see how refreshed and re-invigorated everyone
is after a proper break, with time not only to catch up on work, but also to switch off and relax. I’m sure this
is one of the strategies that has contributed to our excellent examination results over the last two years, and
it’s interesting to see that other schools in the region are starting to move in a similar direction.
The second half of this term is a busy one as always with a multitude of events, trips, competitions, shows,
concerts and other activities to entertain and challenge our students, and often our parents too. Some of these
events, such as the Secondary show ‘Holes’, the REPS’ run and the IGCSE/IB info evening are detailed later
in this newsletter, but please do keep your eyes on our calendar, on your email and on your Engage notifications
to make sure you keep abreast of everything that is going on at this busy time.
I look forward to seeing many of you at one or more of these events over the coming weeks, and to those celebrating
Diwali next week, I wish you Diwali Mubarak!
Mrs Hawtree
DIWALI LIGHTS UP GIS!
GIS celebrated Diwali with spectacular performances and traditional Indian snacks.
Our Diwali evening took place on October 30, with parents and students coming to celebrate
the festival of light. The evening started with snacks, kindly provided by parents,
and then went to the Main Hall for a show featuring Primary and Secondary students.
They performed brilliantly to a range of Indian songs. Well done to our Cultural Director
Cheshta for organising the event, and to the parents, teachers and maintenance team
who helped make everything look so impressive!
GIS DONATES MORE THAN 30,000B TO CAMILLIAN CENTER
Last year both Year 11 and Year 5 students worked hard to raise money for the Camilian Center.
The Camillian Center is an orphanage and support centre for children with HIV/Aids and other
disabilities that is located in Rayong.
The GIS Community Programme supported 29
children last year thanks to the Christmas boxes’
donation and various fundraising activities.
Students have been able to raise an amazing
amount of 31,300 baht.
GIS community will continue to support the
Camillian Center this year.
PHONICS IN FOUNDATION
Foundation teachers held a special information
evening to show parents how their
children learn to read.
On October 4, Reception teacher Ms Emma
and Head of Foundation Ms Cathie explained
how they use the ‘Letters and Sounds’ phonics
system from the UK.
Children learn to read and write words by
breaking them down into sounds. The teachers
also told parents about the ‘Casey the
Caterpillar’ programme used in Early Years
and Nursery, which helps children start to
write letters.
POLEON IS WORLD’S YOUNGEST
CHESS TRAINER
A 9-YEAR-OLD GIS student has become the world’s youngest licensed
chess trainer.
Poleon, who is in Year 5, was invited to attend a trainer seminar and
examination in Bangkok held by FIDE (the international federation for chess).
The event was run by FIDE's most senior trainer, secretary of the international trainers’ commission, Grand Master
Efstratios Grivas. A spokesperson for FIDE told GIS: ‘We confirm that Poleon is the youngest person to be
awarded National Instructor status.’
Poleon excelled in the seminar and in the examinations. As a result he gained enough points for the level of National
Instructor. Poleon is now the youngest-ever National Instructor in the history of FIDE by an amazing four years.
Poleon said: ‘First the trainer gave us some techniques for training and then he gave us a test. Maybe now I can
run a club at school; I’m already training some people.”
Poleon is currently ranked number one in Thailand for his age, despite only starting to play chess two-and-a-half
years ago. Poleon said: “My dad introduced me to chess and at first I just started learning the moves and I was not
really into the tournaments. After a while we got a trainer for me and I played my first tournament.”
In his first competition, aged 7, he came 4th. Within a year, Poleon had started to win tournaments. He said that his
remarkable success also helps him with his studies at school. Poleon explained: “If you sit at the board for 5 hours I
thought you may get super-bored but my coach said you are in the zone so then it does not really feel like time
passes. My dad says playing also helps me see different perspectives.”
Poleon is so good that now he usually plays adults to ensure there is enough of a challenge. He said: “I found that I
play better against adults because I put more effort in and really want to win. I played a famous FIDE-Master and
FIDE-Trainer in Andorra who was the step-father and trainer of one of the highest-ranked players in the world. I
managed to beat him — I got a bit lucky!”
From October 20-24 Poleon took part in the first Pattaya International Youth Chess Tournament with participants
from 14 nations. Poleon played with older 14 and 16 year olds and came 4th in the U14. His sister Bambi, ranked
3rd in Thailand for her age, dominated the under 12 girls tournament and won with an impressive score. This week
Poleon is playing in the Pattaya International Open, an adult tournament with players from 35 countries, including
many famous grand-masters.
This half term, Primary is offering chess as a club (every Thursday period 8) and Poleon is hoping to help encourage
other students to learn how to play.
Trainer, Grand Master, International Arbiter and International Organiser)
FORMER GIS STUDENT STARTS HER
When Yeen first started learning at GIS, she
knew almost no English.
After spending a few months with English
Language Support teachers, she soon improved.
By the time Yeen reached Year 11,
she passed her IGCSEs and was even given
a ‘top in the world’ award.
Yeen has just been awarded a First Class
Honours degree from Durham University in
accounting and finance and is about to start
her post-graduate degree at the worldfamous
University of Cambridge.
Durham is ranked 5th best in the UK, while
the University of Cambridge was recently
ranked the 2nd best university in the world.
Yeen applied to the University of Cambridge
last November and had a long wait before
hearing she had been successful. She has
now just begun studying for her Masters in
Real Estate Finance.
Yeen said her experience at GIS doing the
IB Diploma was excellent preparation for life
at the world’s top universities.
‘When I first came to GIS I was struggling a
bit as I couldn’t understand that much and
English was quite difficult. The English language
support programme, IGCSE and especially
IB was great for university. IB isn’t
just teaching you language, it’s preparing
you for further study.
‘I remember when you do the Extended Essay
for IB it seems like it’s too much to take
but here if you have to write 4,000 words,
maybe that’s not enough; it’s hard to have
such a low boundary.
‘CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) is more
useful than anything else. You can put that
in your CV when you apply to university because
they are not just interested in your
grades but also your extra-curricular experiences.
If you do A levels, they don’t have
that kind of subject. If you have the IB Diploma
it’s really good for you.’
MASTERS AT CAMBRIDGE
While at Durham, Yeen helped run a
Thai society for the 100 Thai students
who study at the university, which involved
special sports events and a Thai
night. Knowing that she wanted to keep
studying in the UK, Yeen started applying
to top universities such as University College
London (UCL), the London School
of Economics (LSE) and Cambridge at
the end of last year.
Yeen submitted a personal statement
and references from two lecturers, but
wasn’t required to attend an interview at
Cambridge. When she discovered Cambridge
had offered her a place, she was
stunned.
‘I kept checking my computer for an
email from them. First I got an offer from
LSE so I thought maybe I missed out
with Cambridge, but then I got an email
from them too. I was shocked to be honest.
I was not expecting that at all. My
family was over the moon.’
Yeen’s progress has been remarkable.
When Yeen joined GIS towards the end
of Year 7, back in 2009, she was in our
English Language Support programme
with Mr Berry. At the start she studied for
the Key English Test (KET), which is for
students with elementary English skills.
After passing her IGCSEs, Yeen then
completed her IB Diploma at GIS in
2015, finishing with a score of 38 – at the
time, the highest-ever score by a Thai
student at GIS.
Yeen said the education she gained from
GIS was a huge help and the perfect
preparation for university. Learning research
and essay-writing skills for IB’s
Extended Essay meant writing essays at
universities was straightforward. And the
opportunities available with Creativity,
Activity, Service (CAS) meant Yeen
could demonstrate many kinds of noncurricular
experiences too when applying
to university.
Yeen praised Mr Berry, one of GIS’s
longest-serving teachers, for helping
to improve her English.
Yeen also had some useful tips for
our current IB students.
‘I think the best thing to do is when
you have some free time it’s better to
spend it in the study room than the
common room, so you can review
what you have been taught. Time
management is quite important, you
have a lot of deadlines in IB.’
Yeen’s sister Khing may be about to
follow a similar path. She is also currently
in the UK, and is in her final
year of her Economics’ degree at the
University of Warwick.
Congratulations to Yeen for gaining a
place at one of the world’s top universities.
It’s a great example of what
GIS can help students achieve.
A Message from our Head Girl and Head Boy
Head Girl — Liyana
Head Boy—Achcharya
Hello,
Our names are Ashcharya and Liyana and we are delighted to be your Head Boy and Head
Girl this year. We are excited to be leading and representing the school and we hope to
make this year more unique and eventful.
Recently, GIS celebrated both Diwali, the Indian festival of lights, and Halloween. Our Diwali
celebration filled GIS with both colour and candles. We were happy to see that everyone enjoyed
the delicious Indian food and the spectacular performances that took place.
The whole school took part in our Hallowe’en celebrations. With help from IB students and
staff we were able to organise a haunted house, Primary disco and other various stalls and
activities that the students all seemed to enjoy.
In the next month or so we will have some more exciting events. This term’s Parent Conference
for Year 7-11 and IB1s will be held on Thursday November 1. We hope to see many
parents attending this as the teachers’ feedback is vital for the development of the students.
One of our big celebrations next month is Loy Krathong, a traditional Thai festival, that will be
celebrated on November 22 this year. Another major event is the Secondary production of
Holes that opens on November 14. We’re sure that the current Year 11s are excited for their
IB Taster Day coming up on Wednesday November 7 where they will get to experience a day
in the life of an IB student.
From Mr Walsh: Head of Primary
Dear Parents and Carers,
The coming half term is going to be filled with festivals, events
and celebrations. These events celebrate the traditions and diversity
in our community and are an important way of helping our
students to be internationally-minded. Something else that complements
the curriculum is homework.
Homework
Homework can help students develop their understanding, but
too much homework can be detrimental. At GIS in Primary the
homework takes many forms, from reading with your child to individual
online Maths’ tasks. The amount of homework gradually
increases as the child moves through Primary. Much of the
homework in the younger years is carried out together (for example
reading or practising tricky words)
Homework is not supposed to be a battle and parents are encouraged
to speak with the class teacher if they are having any
issues related to homework.
General Guidelines
Reception: 2 reading books per week are given to read and
share with parents, carers or siblings. Tricky words & sound
cards are also given out to learn but this is optional. Up to 60
minutes per week.
Year 1: Individual reading books are given out and the students
are encouraged to read at home every day for about 15 minutes.
Individual weekly spellings & spelling work is also given out when
children are ready. Up to 60 minutes per week.
MATHEMATICS’
STUDENTS 3RD IN
VIDEO CONTEST
GIS did brilliantly in the recent
FOBISIA Online Maths Challenge.
A student-made GIS video created
by Primary students came
3rd out of 45 entries. In Secondary,
there were three students
(Amritha, Junseo and Aishu)
who were awarded Platinum
awards; this means they successfully
completed the bronze,
silver and gold challenge levels.
Mr Turagaiviu, Head of Mathematics
and ICT, said: “Well
done to everyone - congratulations
to all the students for participating
on the individual challenges
and those that worked
on the team video challenges.”
Year 2: Individual reading books are given out and the students
are encouraged to read at home every day. Individual weekly
spellings & spelling work is also given out when children ready.
There are short optional online tasks. Thai students sometimes
receive Thai homework. Up to 80 minutes per week.
Year 3: There is a homework grid given out at the start of each half-term topic. This includes
some compulsory and some optional tasks linked to the topic. Weekly spellings are
given out to learn. An individual reading book is given out each week to read and share at
home. There is sometimes Spanish revision for non-Thai students. Thai students sometimes
receive Thai homework. Up to 90 minutes per week.
ELS students are given electronic books to read and questions to answer. They also have
vocabulary linked with the class topic to learn through the Quizlet program.
Year 4: There is a homework grid given out at the start of each half-term topic. This includes
some compulsory and some optional tasks linked to the topic. Weekly spellings are given out
to learn. Online reading homework is set regularly. There is sometimes Spanish and Thai
Culture homework for non-Thai students. Thai students receive regular Thai homework. Up to
90 minutes per week.
ELS students are given electronic books to read and questions to answer. They also have
vocabulary linked with the class topic to learn through the Quizlet program.
Year 5: Online reading homework is set once or twice per week. There is also weekly
online spelling and maths homework, and occasional projects linked with the class topic.
There is regular Spanish and Thai Culture homework for non-Thai students. Thai students
receive regular Thai homework. Up to 120 minutes per week.
ELS students are given electronic books to read and questions to answer. They also have
vocabulary linked with the class topic to learn through the Quizlet program.
Year 6: Online reading homework is set once or twice per week. There is weekly online
mathematics’ homework, handwriting tasks, spelling lists to learn and occasional projects
linked with the class topic. Students receive regular Thai homework (Thai Culture homework
for non-Thai students). Up to 120 minutes per week.
ELS students are given electronic books to read and questions to answer. They also have
vocabulary linked with the class topic to learn through the Quizlet program.
From Mr Share: Head of Secondary
Dear Parents and Carers,
While holidays have taken up a large proportion of the last month, there have still been a wide variety of
outstanding educational, sporting and creative activities that have been happening in and around Secondary.
Our Diwali celebration started off our new half term with some fabulous performances from our students
and delicious food prepared by our parents.
It is a short half term ahead that also includes the important festivals of Loy Krathong, and ends with our
Christmas Fair. Exposing our community to the differing cultural celebrations is an important part of being
an international school with a multicultural outlook, but very importantly it is also good fun.
Even when the school was on holiday, and during the last weeks of Term, we have been preparing for a
busy and exciting time ahead. Our students have been working hard on Mathematics’ projects and preparing
for the Secondary Production, that takes place in 2 weeks.
Our aspiring politicians, diplomats and environmentalists have been busy preparing for MUN conferences
and Global Action initiatives that also take place in the next few weeks. We currently have students in Phuket
competing in the U15 Boys FOBISIA tournament.
The foundation of a successful few weeks ahead have been prepared by some hard work over the last
month and beyond, we look forward to seeing many families in and around the school at the events in the
next half term.
IGCSE AND IB INFORMATION EVENING
The International Baccalaureate is celebrating its 50th birthday this year.
In that time, it’s become the world’s most-respected pre-university qualification. Here at GIS we
are celebrating our 20th anniversary as an IB World School. In that time we have developed into
one of the top IB schools in Thailand. For the past 3 years we have had a 100% pass rate for the
IB Diploma. Our average point score of 35 is also far above the world average of 29.
We also have a strong IGCSE programme — last year we had an impressive 91% pass rate, far
above the UK average. The IGCSE, which students study in Years 10 and 11, is the perfect
A MESSAGE FROM THE CREATIVE ARTS TEAM
‘Tis the season to be merry...and very busy! November and December are always months where the school
community celebrates its cultural diversity in the most spectacular way. From Diwali and Loy Krathong, to
Christmas and a full-blown West End-style musical, GIS students aim to bedazzle everyone with their creative,
dramatic, musical and dance skills.
Over the next few weeks are the fruits of hours, months and even years of training. Training to believe in oneself,
to take risks, to empathise with and to embody unfamiliar characters, to develop skills in speech, singing,
playing instruments, moving, designing, to juggle many expectations and rehearsals in an already busy schedule,
but mostly, training to face a crowd, under the spotlight, and lay bare the human spirit in various forms of
expression.
Just before the holidays, students had already begun to
test the waters of public performance by holding two
Live@Lunch concerts outside the school canteen. Both
were very well received. Primary school pianist, Xander,
rendered a beautiful Chopin waltz to awed Secondary
students. There were a few ensemble pieces that were
prepared by the students themselves, a powerful and
moving monologue by George and a sneak preview of
two pieces from Holes, our upcoming musical.
The world premiere of Holes, the Musical, is set for 14 - 16 November. All performances
begin at 7pm and the box office will open soon, so keep a sharp
lookout! Over the holidays, teachers have been kept busy writing music, building
sets and making costumes. Almost half the Secondary student body is involved
in some way, so we hope that the whole community will come support
this major project.
A fortnight after Holes is the Christmas Fair (December 1), followed by the Christmas Concert (December 6).
There will possibly also be a public performance at Central Rayong Mall, with details to follow. Students have
been preparing hard to perform a seasonal repertoire and really celebrate the end of a long and intense year of
great achievements. We really look forward to seeing you at all these events!
As always, thank you for your continued support of The Arts at GIS!
