Rats have city scurrying
Peabody’s City Council is considering new rules to keep the rising rodent population
at bay. Story on page 2.
City considers later
school start times
By Thomas Grillo
Students at Peabody’s J. Henry Higgins
Middle School and Veterans Memorial
High want to sleep in.
That’s the message from a survey of the
city’s 9-12th graders.
Of the 614 students who responded to
the School Committee questionnaire, 445,
or a whopping 72 percent, said a later start
time would ease their mornings. If school
started later, more than 83 percent said they
would get more sleep, according to the 12-
page survey.
Today, Peabody’s high schoolers start at
7:20 a.m., Higgins starts at 8:10, and the
elementary school bells ring at 8:50.
But that could change next year.
Starting school later can help adolescents
get more sleep, improve their health,
academic performance, and quality of
life, according to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention. More than 75
percent of the middle and high schoolers
in Peabody who responded to the survey
said they go to bed at 11:30 p.m. or later,
New role for
Bridgewell’s
Chris Tuttle
By Bella DiGazia
Chris Tuttle is settling into an unexpected
role.
The Beverly resident was hired as
Bridgewell’s chief operating officer
earlier this year. Today, he is the interim
CEO, taking over from the
agency’s late CEO Kelly Martin, who
died last summer.
“I think the toughest part since I’ve
been here, has been the passing of
Kelly,” he said. “The agency has done
extremely well and a lot of that has
to do with Kelly’s legacy and what
she had built for the last 35 years. My
time with her was short but (…) what
struck me most was her commitment
to the individuals that we serve…”
Now in its 60th year, Bridgewell’s
mission is to provide services that
assist people with disabilities to live
independently through community
housing, day programs, outpatient
treatment, recovery services, education
and employment training. The
nonprofit recently moved its headquarters
to Peabody.
