ALLAN GEORGE “SCOTTY” T. RICHARDSON DAVIDSON
by J.W. (Bill) Fitsell
GEORGE T. RICHARDSON
Historian, Original Hockey Hall of Fame
George Taylor Richardson was born to a prominent
Kingston family on September 14, 1886, the same
year that Queen’s University and Royal Military College
cadets played the first of a series of annual challenge
matches on the Kingston harbour. He had the privilege
of developing his hockey skills in the first covered
Kingston rink on the Queen’s University campus built
by his father. He was in the forefront as Kingston
and Queen’s teams combined to win five Ontario
championships during that era.
Richardson, a dominant winger,
led Queen’s to Intercollegiate Union
titles in 1904 and 1906, scoring
five goals in the win over McGill in
1906. Queen’s then challenged the
Ottawa Silver Seven for the Stanley
Cup, losing the two-game series.
In 1908, he played senior hockey
for Kingston’s 14th Regiment and
ALLAN “SCOTTY” DAVIDSON
had a record-setting performance
in the O.H.A final, scoring seven
goals and adding two assists in a
9-7 win over Stratford. His career
GEORGE T. RICHARDSON
highlight came in 1909, leading
1891-1915
1891-1915 1886-1916
1886-1916
Queen’s to the first Allan Cup Canadian Senior hockey
championship over the Ottawa Cliffsides. A splendid
skater, lightning fast and a good stickhandler, his
hometown press marveled at his”roly-auger, cow-path
rushes”. The Toronto press lauded him as probably
the best forward, amateur or professional in Canada.
Richardson spurned several offers to turn pro and
was considered to be “too much of a gentleman” for
the professional ranks.
When war broke out in 1914, Lieutenant
Richardson immediately regained his commission,
transferred overseas to Salisbury Plains and was
promoted to Captain in command
of three regiments, including
Kingston’s 14th, and the city’s long
time military unit – the Princess
of Wales Own Rifles. He died
in action at Ballieu, France on
February 09, 1916. One of the
last Canadians to visit his grave
was Capt. James Sutherland, who
dedicated his remaining years to
1891-1915
recording his record, including the
tribute: “a hero in sport and war”.
Richardson was inducted into the
Hockey Hall of Fame in 1950.
KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT
CADPAT JERSEY RETURNS TO HONOUR TROOPS
FRONTENACS HOST BULLDOGS IN ANNUAL REMEMBRANCE DAY GAME
For the second home game in a row, the Kingston
Frontenacs will have a different look on
the ice. This week, the team has brought back
the fan favourite CADPAT jersey to honour all
current and former Military members during the
annual Remembrance Day game. The game will
feature a rematch of last year’s Eastern Conference
Final between Kingston and the Hamilton
Bulldogs.
The rivalry between Kingston and Hamilton
has been intensifying in recent years. Before the
Bulldogs moved to Hamilton, Kingston and Belleville
had an intense rivalry. Many Belleville Bulls
players played multiple seasons for Hamilton after
the move, which meant that rivalry continued.
Then came the back to back playoff meetings.
Kingston defeated Hamilton in 7 games during
the 2017 playoffs, and then Hamilton returned
the favour by defeating Kingston 4-1 in the 2018
rematch.
This season, many of the players from those
teams have moved on in their hockey careers,
but the fans remember the history between the
teams. Combine that with the remaining players
telling stories to the new players of past matchups
and the rivalry lives on. The most recent
meeting took place on November 3. Kingston
went to Hamilton and defeated the Bulldogs 5-1.
Tonight will be the 20th regular season meeting
between the Frontenacs and Bulldogs. Kingston
is 10-6-2-1 in the first 19 meetings. On home
ice, the Frontenacs are 5-2-2-0 when taking on
their division rival. Kingston hasn’t won the regular
season series since the 2015-16 season. A
win tonight would give them a 2-0 lead in the 6
game series this season. KF
ALLAN “SCOTTY” DAVIDSON
GEORGE T. RICHARDSON
by J.W. (Bill) Fitsell
Historian, Original Hockey Hall of Fame
Allan M. (Scotty) Davidson was born March 06,
1891 in Kingston’s Portsmouth Village. In the
days when youth hockey teams were selected at
outdoor ice rink tryouts under the keen eyes of
Capt. James T. Sutherland, Davidson won plaudits
for his sensational play and led the Kingston
Frontenacs to Ontario Junior titles
in 1910 and 1911. From the right
wing or point he scored 19 goals
in 20 games and won last-minute
victories with scoring surges that
attracted national attention.
In 1912, Scotty turned
professional, joining the Toronto
Blueshirts of the National
Hockey Association where he
captained the team to Toronto’s
first Stanley Cup win in 1913-
14, scoring the Cup-winning goal
against Montreal. The Great War
broke out that summer and he
immediately enlisted with the First
Canadian contingent, promoted to Lance Corporal,
cited for his “fearlessness coupled with his splendid
physique” and assigned to the dangerous role as a
scout. On June 16, 1915 at the Battle of Givenchy,
France, Scotty was killed attempting to carry a
wounded officer back to his line. His death cast a
cloud of doom back home in Kingston, particularly
affecting Capt. Sutherland, who sparked the
movement to honour Kingston’s war dead with the
creation of a national Memorial
Cup by the Ontario Hockey
Association.
Davidson’s exploits were
praised in print as a terrific
checker, strong skater and
sensational leader. Described
by fellow Hall of Famer Alf Smith
as “the greatest wing player I ever
saw”. Another shrine honouree,
referee Mike Rodden, praised
1891-1915
him “as the best all-round player”
and “an inspirational figure
around which teams are built”.
1886-1916
Davidson was inducted into the
Hockey Hall of Fame in 1950.

When people talk about OHL veterans, Matt
Hotchkiss is the type of guy they are talking
about. Now in his fifth season, Hotchkiss has played
in all but 12 of his teams games throughout his OHL
career. With 280 game played, he has the experience
and the leadership ability that a young team needs,
and this year that team is the Kingston Frontenacs.
Hotchkiss was drafted in the 1st round of the
2014 OHL Priority Selection by the Guelph Storm.
Hotchkiss showed that he was developing, which was
important for a rebuilding team.
The 2016-17 season was Matt’s best as far as
offense goes. He scored a career high in goals, with
14, and assists, with 15, but the Storm were still
rebuilding. Guelph missed the playoffs for the second
year in a row.
Hotchkiss got off to the best start of his OHL career
at the beginning of the 2017-18 season. He scored 8
BILLY KIMMERLY
The Whitby native spent his draft year with the Whitby
Wildcats where he put up 53 points in 35 games.
The following season, his first in the OHL, Hotchkiss
played in 63 games for Guelph as a 16 year old rookie.
He scored 6 goals and 7 assists that year. He also
represented Team Canada Black at the World U-17
Hockey Challenge.
In his second season, the Storm struggled. They
won just 13 games during the 15-16 season, but Matt
showed improvement with his offensive numbers. He
scored 11 goals and 16 assists, but his +/- suffered on
the struggling team. Hotchkiss was a -40 on the year.
The season was a disappointment for the team, but
OFFICIAL GAMEDAY MAGAZINE, VOLUME 46, ISSUE 09
points in his first 19 games and was a +4. That caught
the eye of Darren Keily and the Kingston Frontenacs.
They traded a fifth round pick to Guelph in exchange
for Hotchkiss. It allowed Kingston to add more scoring
depth and experience on a team that would eventually
make a deep playoff run.
Matt returned as one of Kingston’s overage players
this season. He recently had a three point game in
Hamilton. One of those points put Matt over the 100
career point mark in the OHL. With many of Kingston’s
players moving on at the conclusion of last season,
Matt is now being counted on to be a leader in helping
develop the younger players in his final season. KF
BILLY KIMMERLY
STAY OUT OF THE BOX
Frontenacs fans are well aware of what having a
sniper on the power play can do to other teams.
They have seen Jason Robertson carve teams up
while on the man advantage for 3 years now. The
Hamilton Bulldogs have a sniper of their own.
Arthur Kaliyev has 7 power play goals this season,
tied for the league lead with Jason Robertson.
Hamilton’s power play is also converting at a
29.4% clip, good enough for second best in the
OHL. With their opponent having those numbers,
any penalty Kingston takes is asking for trouble.
LOOK TO CLIMB THE MOUNTAIN
If the Frontenacs intend to make the playoffs this
season, they will have to pass two teams in the
standings. One of the two teams closest to them
is their opponent tonight, the Hamilton Bulldogs.
Both Hamilton and North Bay are 6 points ahead
of Kingston in the Eastern Conference standings.
The easiest way to make up ground on teams
ahead of you is to beat them head to head. It’s a
long season, and there is lots of time left, but every
game like this should be looked at as one step up
the mountain in the climb to reach the playoffs.
PLAY FOR SOMETHING BIGGER THAN THE GAME
When it comes to hockey, every game should carry
the same importance as the one before or the one
after, but every once in awhile there is a little extra
motivation. Tonight is one of those nights. Putting
on the CADPAT jersey and wearing the colours of
those who serve our country is a great honour, and
also brings a great responsibility. Win or lose, the
effort players show while wearing those colours
must be top notch. It doesn’t matter what the
outcome is, who the opponent is, or where the
game takes place. What matters is that the players
show the effort that those colours, and all the men
and women who wear them deserve.
