Stedman picks up top award
• By Jacob Page
RIO PARALYMPIC bronze
medallist William Stedman
has been named Middleton
Grange’s sportsman of the year
for the third consecutive time.
Stedman, who has cerebral
palsy won four gold medals at
the national championships in
March.
He won the 200m, 400m,
800m and long jump.
The 18-year-old who lives in
Cashmere said he was hugely
honoured by the feat.
“It’s extremely humbling to
win the award once let alone
three times,” he said.
He said winning a mainstream
award as a disabled
athlete was a sign of the times.
“You’re seeing para-sports
becoming more integrated with
regular events and that’s really
exciting to see.”
Stedman started running
after seeing the London Paralympics
in 2012.
“I started running longer
distances and cross country
events for my club, Port Hills,
but I was encouraged to try
sprint distances because I was
still young in 2014.”
He and coach George Edwards
have been a team since
then.
“George and I get on really
well and he’s great at coaching
me to coach myself and
explaining why we do certain
things.
William has the world championships
in the latter part of
next year to focus on but said
winning Paralympic gold in
2020 was the ultimate focus.
“Having a big break between
major events has allowed me to
focus on my form and actually
see the progression as it happens,”
he said.
“It can be hard to try to peak
three times a year so with world
champs still a year away, it’s
been a big plus for me to just
concentrate on training.
“I think the long jump is
where I have my best chance
and while I’m not bad at the
400m it’s not the most pleasant
event for me,” he said. “It
hurts.”
Stedman is looking to study
engineering part-time at the
University of Canterbury while
continuing to focus on his
athletics.
Bid to drown car fails
• By Matt Salmons
CAR THIEVES who took a car
from Aidanfield on a joyride on
Tuesday morning found that
dumping it in Lyttelton Harbour
was harder than they thought.
The stolen car was reported
to police at 5.45am after it was
found dangling precariously over
the water’s edge in the Naval
Point parking area, near the
Godley Quay, Cyrus Williams
Quay intersection in Lyttelton.
Lyttelton Police supervisor
Sergeant Franco Lovrich said he
suspected the car would have
been taken by youths, however,
police had no suspects as yet.
“It’s been taken for a bit of joyride
and it’s done a few wheelies
and stuff down at the boat ramp
at Naval Point.”
Sergeant Lovrich said it appeared
the car had been left in
gear with the “intention of driving
it off the edge.”
However, that plan did not
work out, Sergeant Lovrich said,
with the car prevented from entering
the water by the rocks and
the angle of the descent.
The vehicle had since been
removed. As the owner was
overseas, family members
arranged to have it towed.
For high school students
choosing a future career
can be a daunting prospect. To
give students a chance to try
before they buy, Ara Institute of
Canterbury has expanded their
programme of taster sessions
to cater for juniors picking their
NCEA subjects, as well as seniors
figuring out their next steps.
Imagine trying out being a web
developer for a day, a performing
arts student at NASDA, or an
engineer. Experience Ara is aiding students to
close the gap between reading about something
and actually giving it a go.
The Experience Ara programme has proven
hugely successful in providing high school
students with a taste of tertiary study, and a
hands-on way to explore their interests. In
2018, 2344 students have registered to 269
events offered in a range of tertiary subjects
including Science, Creative Industries, Trades
and Business. Out of all the young people who
registered for Experience Ara 2018, 911 have
applied to study with Ara in 2019.
Due to high demand, the new programme
for 2019 has even more occurrences and a
broader variety of events. For 2019, Ara has
proposed 242 events, with exciting new additions
such as Introduction to Medical Imaging,
Diving into Data Computing Taster and Builder
for a Day.
Emma West, Ara Engagement Manager said,
“By providing a range of experiential opportunities,
in subject areas that align with employment
opportunities, we are playing a part in
helping young people to make big decisions.”
A year 13 from Catholic Cathedral College
who attended the Re: Structure Portfolio
Workshop for students interested in architecture
said they appreciated the personal
guidance that it gave them, and they now
have “clear knowledge of the course they want
to take.”
Ara is not only the largest tertiary institute in
the South Island, it’s also one of the top-ranking
institutes in New Zealand, with one of the
highest course completion rates in the country.
Students can register online to attend junior
taster sessions (years 9-10), senior taster
sessions (years 11-13), holiday workshops,
and NCEA credited STAR courses.
