PAULA ABDUL
STRAIGHT UP PAULA
An Interview by Vic Gerami
Paula Abdul is a rare superstar.
Despite her remarkable career,
immense talents and global
popularity, she is as accessible as
she is iconic, as sweet in person
as she is on TV and as authentic
as she is extraordinary. So it’s no
surprise that her fans are ecstatic
to see her first solo tour in 25
years.
It’s been 30 years since her first
mega-hit, seven-time platinum
album “Forever Your Girl” captured
us, with singles such as “Straight
Up,” “Forever Your Girl,” “Cold
Hearted” and “Opposites Attract.”
But Abdul was no stranger to the
entertainment industry before
becoming a mega-star. Her mother
was a concert pianist, and she
studied ballet and jazz at a young
age. While in college, she was a
Los Angeles Lakers cheerleader,
which led her to be discovered
by the Jacksons. She was signed
to do the choreography for the
video to their single “Torture,” and
eventually several videos for Janet
Jackson and various other artists.
Abdul graciously made time for
my interview while rehearsing for
her tour, fine-tuning every detail
and preparing to perform for her
excited fans.
INTERVIEW
How does it feel to be
touring again?
Right now, I’m just trying
to put the last-minute
touches and tweaks on
the show. I’m at a dance
studio rehearsing with the
dancers. I really enjoyed
touring last year with New
Kids on the Block and
Boyz II Men, so I thought
it’s time to do a show and
reconnect with my fans.
With an extraordinary
career that includes
two multi-platinum
albums, six #1 singles,
two Grammy Awards,
five MTV Awards, four
American Music Awards,
two Emmy Awards, two
People’s Choice Awards,
a Teen Choice Award and
two Kids’ Choice Awards,
is there less pressure on
you now as a performer, or
more because of your icon
status?
I think the pressure is more
for me to do a great show—
you know, most of the
dancers are almost half my
age, so I have to be in top
shape.
What made you decide
to do this tour?
It was time to go back on
the stage and do what
I love. You know, at the
height of my career,
I had to disappear for
seven years to recover
from a plane crash.
I was touring, and it
was toward the end
of my tour. We
were leaving St.
Louis to go to
Denver on a
seven-seater
private plane.
PHOTO: STUDIO 10 AUSTRALIA
I wasn’t wearing
my seat-belt,
and we crashlanded,
and part
of the plane
went in flames.
I sustained
multiple
injuries and
had to have
many surgeries
and rehab. So I
spent seven years
getting better,
then this show
came along,
“American Idol.”
In fact,
I had one of
my surgeries
while judging on
“American
Idol.”
PAULA
Millions have been your fans
since the beginning of your
career, and whole new younger
generations love you from
“American Idol” too. Did you
have to focus on a particular
demographic when planning
your show?
When I was recording and doing
shows, I had a very diverse
demographic fan base. Then I
had an accident that forced me
to disappear for seven years.
Then came this show, “American
Idol,” and I got a whole new
wave of young fans, so it’s
cyclical.
Did you do any of the
choreography for the show
yourself?
Oh yes, most of it.
What can audiences expect to
see in the show? Any surprises?
They get to see a great show,
have fun and a good time. I do
a mix of retro stuff that people
like, but also new material too.
Tell me about your fans.
They are great. You know, I
so grateful and lucky to have
people who have been with
me throughout my career, so
I wanted to do this show and
connect with them again. I love
my fans.
Get Out! is the premier LGBT
magazine in the greater New
York area, so I would be remiss
if I didn’t ask you about your
gay fans.
I wouldn’t have my career if it
wasn’t for my gay fans. I have
always been very close to the
community, as a dancer, a
choreographer and musician.
They have been there with me
through thick and thin and
stayed with me, always loyal. I
love the [LGBT] community.
Do you miss “American Idol”?
“American Idol” was a great
experience, even with the
dysfunctional family that we
were. I had a great time with
Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson
and all the talented people that
came through the show. You
know, I never had a big brother,
so I learned a lot from Simon.
He taught me how to go deeper
and be strong. I was always
strong, but he helped me a lot.
In fact, we had a mini reunion a
couple of weeks ago at Simon’s
house.
You have a very tight tour
schedule. What do you do to
decompress and self-care?
You know, I usually don’t get a
day off. But sometimes I like to
take Sundays off and do some
meditation, spend time with
family—spend time with those I
don’t see a lot.
Should we look forward to a
new album in the near future?
I’m waiting to see the response
to this tour and how things turn
out, so maybe. I’m starting to
work on a few things.

Tell me a secret—a good one!
I have a huge fear of elevators—
I think because I was stuck in
one with my mother when I was
a little girl. What happens is that
I start laughing uncontrollably
where I have to face the wall. One
time, I was overseas and staying
at this hotel, [and] even though
I had asked to be on one of the
lower floors, they put me on the
33rd floor. I got into the elevator
with my assistant and started
laughing again. All of a sudden
I heard a voice say, “Paula?” I
turned around, and it was my dad,
halfway around the world, at the
same hotel and at the same time.
Whodunit?
As a little pre-Halloween
party, my friend Southern
Belle C threw a 1930s murder
mystery party.
I felt I was given the best
character: Freda, the gypsy
bar-owner. She (or, in this
version, a very effeminate
he) had been secretly seeing
the murder victim, who was
engaged to someone else,
and they planned to run away
and elope the very night
he was murdered.
(“I’m never going
to get married,
am I?” I asked
Southern Belle
C solemnly,
reading my
character
book.)
I put
together
what I was
sure would be
the best outfit:
beaded shorts
from Anthropologie,
a silk turban and red
shirt from Prada, and
miscellaneous bracelets all
up my arm—but my own
boyfriend showed me up. J,
the doctor, showed up in a
plaid suit, carrying an oldschool
doctor’s bag and a
fake glued-on mustache.
Guests mingled and drank.
The drinks all had themed
names; my favorite was The
Hindenburg, with RumChata
and Fireball whisky, while J
drank Red Herrings (whisky
and cherry liqueur).
I quickly realized that I was
not only an obvious suspect,
but that someone was
framing me for the murder. I
searched for clues and talked
to everyone, but my hysteria
combined with too many
Hindenburgs just left me
frantically telling everyone
that I didn’t murder him.
Another shot of Fireball later,
I started relating to Freda
way too much. Freda was just
a girl, different from everyone
PHOTO: STEVE BRENNAN
else on the island, more
eccentric, who was looking
for love. But nobody believed
her—they mocked her for her
gypsy ways, said there was no
way she wanted something
real when she kept posting
naked photos of herself
on social media—oops,
sorry, nevermind, that’s me.
I asked the butler to make
me another Hindenburg,
mentioning that I didn’t kill
anyone. Side-eyeing me, he
mixed the drink.
Just like a lot of us, when
Freda finally thought she
found love, it was torn away
from her. (Usually that’s
because we get broken up
with, not because someone
was murdered on a beach on
a stormy night, but, like, you
get what I’m going for here.)
When Southern Belle C
announced we had five
minutes before he revealed
the murderer, I made a final
attempt and went to talk
to the deceased’s fiancé. I
told her everything: that
we were having an affair,
that we were going to
run away and elope
and that I didn’t kill
him. She stared
at me blankly.
“I don’t know
why you’re
telling me all
of this now,”
she said, flatly, in
perfect character.
I would’ve cried
if I’d had one more
Hindenburg.
In the end, it was said
that the fiancé had killed
him—I’d confessed my
sins to the murderer. But I
couldn’t pretend that I hadn’t
betrayed her too—sorry,
that FREDA hadn’t betrayed
her—and now they’d all have
to pay the price.
“Always a bridesmaid,
Freda,” I whispered to
myself.
“What?” J asked, sitting next
to me on Southern Belle C’s
couch.
“Nothing. I think I need a
glass of water.”
Often, it isn’t until a long time has passed
until we fully appreciate and acknowledge
a star’s legacy. But that is not the case with
Rose McGowan, whose natural talents
have earned her immense success and
critical acclaim, whose striking beauty has
forever elevated Hollywood iconography,
whose exceptional intellect has made her a
survivor and a champion, and finally, whose
charisma and articulation have made her the
Joan of Arc of the #MeToo and Time’s Up
movement.
It is difficult to measure an artist’s
contribution to society, having influenced
and inspired countless people. But it’s
impossible to ascertain McGowan’s impact
as the defacto heroine of a historical and
long-overdue global movement. She
has conquered acting, singing, writing,
producing, directing and public speaking,
and they have led her to this new chapter in
her life where she sheds old pedals to reveal
fresh, glorious beauty.
You have emerged as a heroine, a pillar
of strength and an inspiration for millions
after a tumultuous and controversial
year. How are you doing now?
The past few years have been harder than I
could imagine, surviving the last year most
especially. What helped me was the support
I got in real life. I’ve met person after
person who says keep going, keep fighting.
It has been both humbling and inspiring. It
was a hard, hard year, but there were bright
spots of joy here and there. I try to focus
on those. The answer is I’m healing. I have
great friends and a great relationship that is
helping with the healing.
What have you learned from the last
year that you can share with people who
might have gone through or are still
going through similar experiences?
I have learned that we are stronger than we
know, that tears equal strength, that pain
equals growth, and to just hang on, because
it does in fact get better. Keep going. No
matter what, keep going.
Do you feel pressure to be strong all
the time considering your strength and
defacto role as a leader?
It’s an unusual pressure. We haven’t been
here before societally; there is no road map.
A bit like walking through a jungle with a
machete and you have no idea where the
drop offs are, but you hope for the best.
For me, the best is always trying to be
10% better than I have to be. I use it as a
personal challenge and one that may
inspire others to be better versions of
themselves.
You have an impressive resume as
an actress in film and TV, but have
since added best-selling author
with your memoir, “Brave,” and a
documentarian with your four-part
docuseries “Citizen Rose.” Do you
miss acting, and do you plan to do
film or TV again soon?
I’m proud of my body of work. I did
the best I could job wise despite being
heavily blacklisted. TV and film were
very separate businesses at the time.
The TV producers on “Charmed”
didn’t know that I had been canceled
in the movie industry. I always tried to
communicate with the audience through
my eyes; now it’s time for my own voice.
Through acting I inhabited many skins,
lives, voices—so many other people,
for so many years—it’s time for me to
just be me. For now, I can’t see acting
anytime in the future. I do miss directing
and crafting a story, but right now I feel
like we don’t have time for metaphors.
What needs to be said needs to be said.
Tell me a bit about the album you’re
working on?
“Planet 9” is the name of my upcoming
album. I’ve been crafting it for three
years. I like to say it’s music that can take
us to space. Suspended in time, given
room to feel and move. The album
takes listeners on a journey for sure. If
you mixed up Pink Floyd, Grace Jones
and Stevie Nicks with some propulsive
French beats, you have “Planet 9.”
Tell me about your fans, especially
people who reached out to you
following the past year.
I have met extraordinary beings this
past year. I’m honored to walk with them
on this journey, which is why I’m turning
my Instagram @rosemcgowan over to
others to share their truths on my page
for the month. Calling it #NOvember,
I’m really excited to highlight and honor
those who are fighting the good fight,
people that have risen up and are rising;
it’s a beautiful thing to witness. I hope
you’ll all join us.
What are a few misconceptions about
you?
Ooof, that I’m transphobic. Nothing
could be further from the truth. This
one hurts a lot, because my life has
been interwoven with the community
since I was 13 years old. I was a runaway
taken in by two loving trans women
who saved me from a life on the streets.
The idea that I’m transphobic makes
me physically ill; it hurts my soul.
When I said, “What have you done for
women?” I meant ALL women.
What is your favorite charity or cause?
I really advocate for the smaller
charities, the ones that are on the front
lines. It is not easy, and I tip my hat to
them. In the past, I’ve volunteered at
Covenant House helping homeless
LGBTQ teenagers, my focus for
years being gay rights. I also love the
East Los Angeles Women’s Center,
an extraordinary place doing great
aftercare work with rape and human
trafficking survivors. Now that this year
has settled down a bit, I hope to get
back to more volunteer work. We all
should.
What project(s) do you have coming
up?
I have a skincare line called The Only
that I’ve been developing with my aunt
Rory for eight years. It’s an incredible
product mixing science and nature. I’m
working on the visuals to go with my
album, “Planet 9,” because I want it to
be an experience. Also, starting work on
my next book and preparing for “Brave”
to come out in paperback!
Tell me a secret—a good one!
When I’m in America, I eat at Taco
Bell at least two times a week. I know I
shouldn’t, but I just can’t help myself.
Nonconsensual
pornography (i.e.,
revenge porn) refers
to the distribution
of sexually explicit
video or images of an
individual(s) without
their permission. There
are currently no federal
laws that prohibit
revenge porn, but they
do exist in 40 states
and Washington, D.C.
New York state is not
included; however, as
of February 2018, it is
a crime in New York
City, and offenders
can face a $1,000 fine
(probably less than you
pay for rent) and up
to a year in jail. So, if
you’re thinking about
trying to use anyone’s
pics against them, aside
from just being a jerk,
it’s probably not a good
idea.
My ex and I took a lot
of pics and videos of
our sex life while we
were together. I didn’t
THOMAS
TALKS
ABOUT: REVENGE
think much of
it at the time,
but now we’re broken
up, and I’m not sure it
was a great idea. I’m
afraid they’re going
to get out. We’re
on good terms, but
I don’t know if we
always will be. Is this
something I should
be concerned about?
There are naked pics
everywhere online, so
is it even a big deal? -
Male, Gay, 24
I don’t know exactly how
“the cloud” works, but
it’s often in the news
that people’s material
gets hacked. This is what
people should keep in
mind when they decide
to take sexual pics and
videos: It’s not always
the person who has
them that leaks them.
Yeah, it’s extremely
common to have them,
and if you’ve ever been
on a sexual networking
app, people aren’t shy.
As for being concerned,
there probably isn’t a
ton you can do about it
unless your ex tries to
use them against you.
You said you’re on good
terms—perhaps you can
just talk to him about it
and let him know you’re
concerned. Depending
on what you do for work,
OF THE NUDES
they could potentially
affect you in the future
should they get out.
There is no way to know
for sure.
I have a lot of naked
photos and vids from
one of my exes, and
I still use them to get
off sometimes. Is there
anything wrong with
that? It honestly makes
me feel really good
to look at them, and
maybe I miss him. Is it
weird to keep this stuff
after the break up?
I’ve asked my friends,
and they seem sort of
split. - Male, Gay, 27
Boo, you’re only hurting
yourself, and it doesn’t
sound like you see it that
way. It seems pretty clear
that you’re still at least a
little hung up on your ex,
and using his pics and
vids to get off to is not
going to make it easier
to move on. I don’t think
it’s weird to necessarily
still have some of this
stuff while you’re single,
but for you, it’s giving
you a lot of pleasure,
and that could be a
problem. If you want
to move on, you’ve got
to delete it—or at least
make it less accessible.
