Alan Bullard
Images of Peace
Images of Peace resulted from a request for a work that would encourage peace and understanding
while not focussing on any particular creed or belief, and Alan Bullard approached this concept by
choosing texts from a range of sources, including the English metaphysical and pastoral traditions, and
the Taoist, Jewish, and Christian traditions. The set of five songs are designed as a symphonic whole, with
the first and last (‘Sweet Peace’ and ‘Bread of Peace’) partly sharing the same material, book-ending
three contrasting movements, a lively scherzo (‘Rainbow of Peace’), an expressive slow movement
(‘Peace in the World’), and an elegant allegretto (‘Doves of Peace’).
Cecilia McDowall
Da Vinci Requiem
This significant work presents an imaginative pairing of the Latin Requiem text and extracts from the
Leonardo da Vinci notebooks. Da Vinci’s reflective and penetrating insights into the nature of mortality
and all that it encompasses cast new light on the familiar Latin Mass, and McDowall contrasts solo and
chorus movements for effective dramatization. Dark, sonorous writing contrasts with an energetic
Sanctus, and a luminous Lux aeterna brings the work to a hopeful close.
The Lark Ascending
SECULAR
SATB and violin
2
This innovative choral arrangement of The Lark Ascending incorporates the original solo violin part with
an accompaniment by mixed choir. It combines wordless vocal lines and vocal solos, with a sensitive
setting of George Meredith’s poem (on which the original orchestration is based), carefully preserving
the texture and timeless effect of the original. Commissioned and premiered by the Swedish Chamber
Choir, the work has also been recorded by the choir under the direction of Simon Phipps.
