Horticulture Level 1<br />

Landscape Gardening Level 2<br />

Course length: 1 year | Code: 7006<br />

Entry requirements<br />

• 2 GCSEs at grade 2 (E) or above in both English<br />

& maths.<br />

• We will do an assessment to find out which<br />

course level is right for you.<br />

• A positive attitude, be physically fit and have an<br />

enthusiasm for practical outdoor work.<br />

• You will be invited to a ‘taster’ session to find out<br />

more about the course.<br />

About the course<br />

This is an excellent starting point if you are<br />

completely new to Horticulture. You gain a good<br />

working knowledge by combining practical projects<br />

with some classroom based study. Learn how to<br />

prepare soil, grow & care for plants, plant them out,<br />

maintain them and look after tools & machinery. You<br />

spend up to two days gaining vital work experience.<br />

You also gain personal & social development skills<br />

which help you with your studies and finding a job,<br />

plus essential Functional Skills qualifications in<br />

maths, English and ICT. As part of the Foundation<br />

Learning offer, this course gives you an introduction<br />

to lots of other subject options as well as<br />

Horticulture.<br />

You will need safety boots and warm clothes for<br />

working outdoors.<br />

Your future<br />

After completing your course, you can move on to<br />

the Landscape Gardening Level 2 course, find an<br />

apprenticeship or employment in the Horticulture<br />

and Gardening industries.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

• 2 GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above, including English.<br />

or<br />

A full Level 1 at Pass grade, plus a GCSE grade 3<br />

(D) or above in English.<br />

• You will have an interview and further assessment<br />

to check the course is right for you.<br />

• A keen interest in working outside with plants.<br />

About the course<br />

Interested in the environment? A career in Landscape<br />

Gardening offers something for everyone. You can be<br />

creative and learn how to design beautiful gardens.<br />

This course is a great introduction to the skills and<br />

knowledge you need to form a solid base for a<br />

lifelong career.<br />

Topics covered include practical horticultural<br />

skills, plant identification & knowledge, garden<br />

maintenance and how to use specialist tools &<br />

equipment. You will learn hard landscaping skills<br />

including laying patios, paving, fencing, lawn & hedge<br />

maintenance and using a wide range of horticultural<br />

machinery.<br />

You will complete a work placement to build up<br />

practical hands-on experience. In addition, you have<br />

the opportunity to improve your English and maths.<br />

You will need safety boots and warm clothes for<br />

working outdoors.<br />

Your future<br />

On successful completion of the course, you could<br />

progress to the Horticulture BTEC Level 3 course,<br />

or on to an apprenticeship in Horticulture. You could<br />

also use the skills and experience you have gained to<br />

find employment in the Horticulture industry.<br />
