Side Trips 

Sometimes we feel we live at the busiest 

intersection in town — across the street 

from Sheldon Middle School, on the 

corner of a four-way stop. Busy or not, I was 

reminded the other day 

that we still are not far 

from the country. 

I was a little stressed 

last week one morning 

as I loaded my 

car before heading off 

to work. Purse. Lunch 

bag. Work tote. Files to 

return to the accounting 

office from papers my 

husband had gone over 

the night before. Box to 

ship to my college-age 

daughter. (“Mom, can 

you send my warm boots? Please?”) Mug of 

hot coffee. Yeti filled with ice water. 

I put the car in reverse, checked the rear view 

mirror and began to back out. That’s when I 

noticed the garbage can from curbside pickup 

had tipped over in the wind and blocked my 

access to the street. 

Out of the car in a not-warm-enough coat, 

down to the street to flip the can (in crazy 

windy conditions), bring it back to the garage 

and finally back to the car. 

At this time of the morning I know to watch 

for school busses, mom’s dropping kids, bicycles, 

walkers and mopeds. Things looked 

clear in all directions, but I wondered why the 

van coming from the east had stopped in the 

middle of the street, far before the intersection. 

And just as quickly as my mind wondered, 

my eyes spotted the answer: two deer casually 

wandered from an empty lot, meandered 

across the street and made their way through 

another residential area. No hurry on their 

part. Just out for a morning walk. 

A run in with them could certainly have 

taken my hectic morning from bad to worse. 

Perhaps having to retrieve that sideways 

garbage can was a blessing in disguise.

Feast fit for a King and Queen 

Elizabethan Madrigal Feaste set for Nov. 30-Dec. 1 

Lords and Ladies. It’s time to feaste. Her Majesty’s Recorder Consort, The be a procession of the Boar’s Head. 

For the 19th year, Iowa Lakes King’s Brass Ensemble, Ye Olde Percussion 

Ensemble and My Lady of pudding and strolling carolers. 

There will also be a jester, flaming 

Community College will be 

hosting their annual Elizabethan 

Madrigal Feaste. The event will take 

place at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 

and Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Estherville 

VFW Club. 

Guests will have the chance to 

experience a reenactment of a true 

Renaissance-era feast complete with 

period entertainment and food. 

“It is a holiday celebration set in 

the Renaissance time frame with 

costumes, scenery, jokes and best 

of all, music! The madrigal choir, 

six octave handbell ensemble, brass 

ensemble and recorder ensemble all 

entertain you while you eat a fivecourse 

meal,” said Carol Ayres, a 

professor of instrumental music/jazz 

band with Iowa Lakes Community 

College. 

There will be performances by the 

Royal Iowa Lakes Chamber Singers, 

the Lakers Hand Bell Ringers. 

“The college’s madrigal feast is a 

true to form re-enactment of a Renaissance 

English dinner, with one 

small exception: guests will have 

access to silverware! This dinner is 

based on what a person might have 

encountered in the 16th century,” according 

to the college’s website. 

“During that time, a Lord and Lady 

would host a party for area royalty. 

The guests, in this case, are the audience.” 

Each year about 55-60 students are 

involved with the Feaste and though 

there are new students, new menu 

items, new music and changes to the 

script to keep the event unique and 

different every year there are also 

some traditions that are exciting. 

The students will be dressed in period 

English costumes and there will 

The five course meal will include 

salad, soup, wassail, the main entree 

and dessert. 

The students will be in costume 

and the guests can choose to dress 

up if they want to get more into the 

spirit of things, but it’s not a requirement 

to attend. 

The tickets for the event are $20 

and they always go fast. Make sure 

you call sooner rather than later to 

reserve your seats. 

It’s a fun event for the guests, but 

it’s also a fun time for the students 

and their professors. 

“I enjoy all the new songs our 

groups learn. We even have a couple 

of songs written and arranged by 

students this year. My favorite part 

is seeing all the people who return 

year after year, making it part of their 

holiday tradition,” said Ayres. F

bright with both lights 

and memories this holiday 

season. 

The 29th annual Tree 

of Love lighting event 

will take place at 3:30 

p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 

26. The program will 

take place inside the 

hospital in the East entrance. 

The program will 

include singing festive 

carols, entertainment, 

refreshments and a short 

message from Pastor 

Chris St. Claire from Calvary Methodist 

Church in Arnolds Park. 

“He is new to our community and 

sings as well so that will be fun to add 

him to our carols that we always sing,” 

said Willie Moeller, who is a member 

of the Lakes Regional Healthcare Auxiliary 

and serves on the Tree of Love 

committee. 

Moeller serves on the committee 

along with Leah Streeter and Rosemary 

Stellinga. 

After the fun, the Tree of Love will 

then be lit for the season. 

Each year, the committee creates 

unique hand-painted ornaments to 

sell for $5 as a part of their fundraiser. 

“We made 220 ornaments again 

this year. And this year’s heart-shaped 

ornament is a little bear and it says 

‘Beary Christmas’ on it. The decorations 

were hand painted by Arlene 

Krogman and Ester Jepson again this 

year,” Moeller said. 

The money raised from the sale of 

the lights supports scholarships from 

the Lakes Regional Hospital Volunteers 

for students entering the health 

care field and supports Meals on 

Wheels through the Voluntary Action 

Center. 

The lights and ornaments are available 

for sale through the holiday 

season at the reception desk at the 

Lakes Regional Healthcare Hospital. 

The Tree of Love is a live tree 

that was donated and planted 

by Sally Parks in memory of 

her late husband, Leo. 

The Tree of Love lighting is 

usually attended by around 

50 people but the lighting 

of the tree itself is something 

that the community 

looks forward to 

every year. 

“It’s not a really 

big event, but the 

community is 

always interested 

in buying the 

ornaments that 

we make and 

watching 

for when 

we light 

the tree,”

Hike the Wild on the hunt 

for turkeys on Nov. 27 

After enjoying a turkey on your 

Thanksgiving table, the Dickinson 

County Nature Center will 

be giving you a chance to enjoy them 

in the wild. 

The Nature Center will be hosting 

their monthly Hike the Wild event on 

Tuesday, Nov. 27. Most of their Hike 

the Wild programs take place at 9:30 

a.m., but the November edition is all 

set to take place at 3 p.m. in Kenue 

Park at the Nature Center. 

The theme for the November Hike 

the Wild will once again be a Turkey 

Trot. They’ve had this theme before, 

but they always feature a new twist 

on each Hike the Wild event. Even 

though it’s technically after Thanksgiving 

Day, they thought hosting a 

turkey-themed event would definitely 

work as they have some of the feathery 

friends on the premises. 

“Although it’s shortly after Thanksgiving, 

we thought we would host a 

hike that allows folks to walk through 

a little bit of a turkey habitat. Kenue 

Park has a number of these feathered 

friends that folks may get to see while 

on our walk,” said Bryanna Kuhlman, 

the environmental education coordinator 

with the Dickinson County 

Conservation Board. “We will be

The event is open to everyone and 

it’s free to join the fun. Just dress for 

the weather and wear appropriate

Even though it is no longer the 

summer season when everyone just 

loves to get outside and enjoy the nice 

weather, the organizers of the Hike 

the Wild events want to show everyone 

that nature can be enjoyed all year 

round. 

“Folks can expect to get out and 

experience the beauty of the changing 

seasons. I am hoping visitors will 

get a glimpse of a wild turkey, but of 

course I cannot control our wild animal 

friends. Folks will also get to learn 

about Iowa turkey populations such 

as what species of turkey we have in 

Iowa, what they eat, where they roost 

and see some awesome biofacts such 

as a turkey beard, feathers and bones,” 

Kuhlman said. “I am most excited to 

get out with community members 

and enjoy the beauty of the season. 

We may see squirrels, some of our 

year-round bird residents and hopefully 

a wild turkey.” F

Danielle Clouse Gast showcases work at nature center 

It’s a first and a last this fall and winter 

at the Dickinson County Nature 

Center. 

It’s the first time local artist Danielle 

Clouse Gast has shown her paintings 

in the nature center’s eARTh exhibit 

area. And it will mark the final exhibit 

before the area is transformed into a 

different space. 

Clouse Gast’s landscapes were hung 

in October and will be up through the 

end of December. 

Each piece is also for sale if visitors 

are inspired to bring a piece home. 

“This is different, of course, than a 

gallery setting. It’s a beautiful facility 

and a lot of fun to see artwork in this 

environment,” Clouse Gast said. 

Clouse Gast’s modern, colorful, abstract 

approach to familiar landscapes 

fits perfectly in a setting such as the 

nature center. 

“I’m reminded when I come into a 

place like this about the color, repetition 

and patterns in nature,” Clouse 

Gast said. “Even though I take an 

abstract approach it meshes well in a 

facility like this.” 

Clouse Gast, who often works on 

a larger scale, focused on small views 

for this particular show. 

There are 15 pieces in the show 

ranging from 20 by 20 inches to 8 by 

8 inches. 

“There can be just as much work 

and effort in a small piece as in a 

larger one. They each hold their own 

and are fun to do. With the space here 

it was about how to create the most 

impact in a two-wall set up,” Clouse 

Gast said. 

All were done within the past year 

and all are studies of the landscapes of 

Dickinson County and surrounding 

areas. 

She often snaps shots of the passing 

countryside from her car window — 

farmland, groves of trees, wetlands and 

waterways — occasionally stopping to 

capture a particular inspiring scene. 

Recording some video has added 

another element to her process as well. 

“Getting that cloud movement over 

the lake or the sound helps when we 

get to January or February. I want to be 

able to feel that place, that temperature, 

that time of year when I’m portraying 

a certain atmosphere,” Clouse 

Gast said. 

The colors visitors see in this show 

are colors they see every day. 

But as Clouse Gast says, they’re 

kicked up a bit. The greens are a bit 

greener, blues bluer and occasionally 

a new color makes an appearance in 

the palette. 

“Ultimately I’m having fun in the 

studio,” Clouse Gast said. “I always 

turn it up a notch on what we’re 

used to seeing. I just gravitate to the 

playfulness of taking landscapes to a 

different palette, brighter or greener, 

and sometimes it’s just a matter of 

cracking open a new tube of paint and 

seeing what happens.” 

Not matter the color scheme, the 

scenery that inspires Clouse Gast remains 

the same.

A WILD 

ADVENTURE 

children’s book has come to life at the Pearson Lakes Art 

Chad Elliott’s stories come to life on canvas Center. 

“Wilderman’s Treetop Tales” is a book filled with poems 

and paintings by musician and artist Chad Elliott. 

Along with the book Elliott produced an album bringing lyrics 

from the book to life via music. 

And he has also completed 15 stunning, 3-by-4-foot acrylic 

paintings to bring the book to life on a large scale. 

The paintings made their debut at the Pearson Lakes Art Center 

where they will be on display through Jan. 5 in the Weaver Lobby 

Gallery and McIlrath Landing Gallery. 

New work included in the exhibit comes from the forthcoming 

second installment of the book series title “Wilderman’s River 

Rhymes.”

this year and carrying us into the new year,” said 

Danielle Clouse Gast, visual arts director at the art 

center. “What I love about this exhibit is that it’s 

approachable for adults and for kids. There is something 

about having an exhibit that kids are going to 

be immediately drawn too.” 

Big, bright, and whimsical, they’re hard to miss 

upon entering the art center. Each one is a practically 

a self-contained story — an adventure in itself. 

“It says so much about Chad’s ability as a painter 

and his storytelling abilities and his great ability to 

do both,” Clouse Gast said. 

Each piece is instantly recognizable as Elliott’s 

work. His stylistic approach lends itself beautifully 

to creating a rich, imagined world that can be enjoyed 

piece by piece and as a whole. 

“The color palette and style is consistent through 

all the paintings and people can spend time with 

each painting because they can tell there is a story 

behind it,” Clouse Gast said. 

It’s a testament to Elliott’s knack for visual, verbal, 

and musical storytelling. 

Clouse Gast says they also hope to organize a 

couple story time events during the exhibit’s run to 

bring all those aspects together. 

However visitors choose to enjoy the story, an 

adventure awaits at the art center with “The Wilderman’s 

Series.” F
