Another Hotchkiss to join UCSB pool
Kennan to join his
brother, swim at
college level
For as long as he could
remember, Kennan Hotchkiss
has been chasing his
brother, Logan.
Both were competitive
swimmers at Malibu High
School, where Kennan
spent the last two years
trying to take as many
of Logan’s records as he
could. And now, he’ll follow
in his older brother’s
footsteps again. Kennan
has verbally committed to
attend the University of
California, Santa Barbara
next fall, where he will
continue both his academic
and swimming career.
Logan tried not to influence
him, but the elder
Hotchkiss did describe the
environment on the Gauchos
swim team.
“He told about how up
there it’s always teammates
helping each other
out and he basically let me
speak for myself” Kennan
said. “He asked me: ‘What
do you personally want up
there?’”
Swimming was a big
factor, but so was pursuit
of a career, potentially in
biology.
“I like figuring out and
understanding how things
work and go together so
I’m thinking about being
a paramedic or doing
pre-med,” Kennan said.
“Human biology and how
things work has always
been an interest of mine,
especially with the ocean
around me and all the nature.”
UCSB has a strong science
program, he said. On
the athletics side, he wanted
to swim for a “fast”
school, preferably in Division
1. The two brothers
will not be able to compete
together, given that
Logan’s four years of eligibility
are up, but Logan
may train with the team in
preparation for the Olympic
Trials.
Kennan had been speaking
with the coaching
staff since Logan has been
there, but got to go on his
official visit the first week
of October. There, he got
Joan Lunden, journalist, former host of Good Morning America and senior living advocate.
to hang out with the team,
walk the campus and look
in on a biology class. After
a few days on campus,
he mulled things over and
then offered his verbal
commitment.
“It clicked with me,”
Kennan said.
The MHS graduate and
former Malibu Seawolves
member plans to live on
campus as a freshman,
which will be his first time
living away from home
for more than a month
at a time. Remaining in
California, close to family,
was important for Kennan.
Recently, he’s been swimming
club and focusing on
a lot of solo training, so
Kennan said he’s excited
to be back in a team atmosphere.
“I’m really looking forward
to that team vibe and
having to push each other
and having a training partner,”
Kennan said.
His goals over the course
of his college career are
to get to the Olympic Trials
for the 1,500 freestyle.
Right now, he said, his
time is at 15 minutes, 59
seconds, and the goal is to
get that down to 15:44.
Next season will bring
exciting new challenges
both in and out of the pool,
but Kennan seems more
than content with his decision.
“It’s an environment
with great academics and
it’s next to the beach,
which always helps,” Kennan
said.
