SIP ON THIS
3 Festive
Cocktails
What’s your relationship with winter sports? Do you
buy a season ski pass before the first snowstorm of
the season hits or is your idea of a winter workout
maneuvering Christmas cookies to and from your
mouth? My courtship is complicated. Growing up so
close to the Sierras meant Friday field trips to Boreal
Mountain Resort and Sunday fundays sledding.
Though it sounds like a
postcard-perfect childhood,
the reality was much different.
My inaugural experience
downhill skiing was one of
the most frigid, frightening
days of my life. I cried more
than I laughed and was on
my fanny more than my
feet. Subsequent attempts
included injuries and a general
fear factor that I never could
conquer. Needless to say,
when I moved to San Diego and traded the snow for
the sand, I didn’t miss the mountains one bit.
It wasn’t until returning to my roots that I truly
started appreciating the beauty and flurry of fun we
have in this winter wonderland of ours. Downhill
skiing aside, residents can go snowshoeing, crosscountry
skiing, ice-skating, or even join a curling club.
And in this month’s Health & Wellness article, “Work
it Out(side)” (page 26), Kourtney
Jason guides you through various
ventures, with the benefits/
calories burned, local places to try
it, and a beginner tip for each. Even
when the temps are tempting you
inside, I hope it inspires you to soak
up the snow and opt outside.
Winter sports aren’t the only nod to the season
this issue. We’ve packed these pages with a plethora
of holiday fun, including “31 Ways to Give Back in 31
Days” (page 30) where Sharon Penny proves it is indeed
better to give (of your time and talents) than receive.
Make it your mission to try everything on the list or
commit to one cause and see just how warm and fuzzy
it makes you feel.
When it comes to giving more material things
this month, because Christmas, I encourage you to
check out our Holiday Gift Guide on page 35, chock-full
person on your list. The best part? Almost everything
away a winner.
For people planning to host a holiday party (bless
you), flip to Kerrie L. Kelly’s article, “4 Tips for Effortless
Entertaining” on page 32, featuring suggestions on
how to be the hostess with the mostess, including
investing in actual invites to truly set the soirée’s
scene. And what’s an affair without alcohol? Make it
extra spirited by preparing one of the 3 festive cocktails
(each using locally made liquor) in Sip on This (page 55).
Whether you loathe or love this time of year,
remember to take a moment to appreciate the people,
places, and things that abound and surround. Happy
holidays!
