New drug offender program promises
better results, less cost to taxpayers
District 7 board
member calls
program a ‘win-win’
Forest preserve’s dog park
permits for 2019 currently on sale
Submitted by Forest
Preserve District of Will
County
The Forest Preserve District
of Will County began
selling 2019 dog park permits
earlier this month.
Permits are good for the
remainder of 2018 through
Dec. 31, 2019. They can be
purchased online at www.
ReconnectWithNature.org
or in person at three District
visitor centers: Isle a
la Cache Museum in Romeoville,
Plum Creek Nature
Center in Crete Township
and Sugar Creek Administration
Center in Joliet.
The Will County Adult
Detention Center will begin
providing inpatient drug
treatment to some incarcerated
individuals thanks to
a new partnership between
Will County and Family
Guidance Services announced
today. The new
initiative is an expansion
of the very successful drug
court which has pursued innovative
ways to help people
with drug addiction get on
the path to recovery.
“I’m glad that the county
is taking a holistic approach
to the problem of addiction,”
said Will County Board
Speaker Jim Moustis. “The
drug court has helped individuals
suffering from addiction
become productive
citizens again and I’m confident
that these new inpatient
services will help even
more people recover as well
as save taxpayers money by
keeping people out of jail.”
Historically, an individual
who was in jail on a non-violent
offence might have been
eligible for drug treatment
probation. To qualify for
the probation the individual
must first have a drug assessment
completed. However,
the wait time to have an assessment
completed was
approximately eight weeks.
Family Guidance Services
recently became a designated
provider and the wait
time for the assessment is
expected to be brought down
to two weeks.
“The reduction in wait
time is critically important,”
said Will County Board
Member Beth Rice. “If we
can help people get out of
jail, become drug free and
lead successful lives, all
for less money than we are
spending now, I see absolutely
no reason not to move
forward with this program.”
Occasionally, a person
who is eligible for this program
is in need of inpatient
treatment. With the addition
of inpatient services at the
Adult Detention Center, an
entire new population can
be reached for rehabilitation.
Family Guidance Services
has experience running inpatient
drug treatment programs
and will operate these
new services at the Will
County Jail.
“This program has the potential
to transform so many
lives,” said former Circuit
Judge Carla Policandriotes
who now consults for Family
Guidance Services. “These
Dog park permits can be
used at all five of the District’s
off-leash dog parks,
which are located in these five
preserves: Forked Creek in
Wesley Township, Hammel
Woods in Shorewood, Messenger
Marsh in Homer Glen,
Lower Rock Run in Joliet and
Whalon Lake in Naperville. A
sixth dog park will be opening
soon at Plum Valley Preserve
in Crete Township.
Annual permits cost $40
for county residents and $80
for nonresidents. Additional
fees are charged for multiple
dogs up to a maximum
of three dogs. Discounts are
available for senior citizens,
veterans and active duty
military.
Annual dog park permits
can be purchased from November
through June. Halfyear
dog park permits are offered
for half price from July
through October.
Dogs must be 6 months
old to use the dog parks.
And owners must remain
with their dogs and keep
their dogs under control at
all times. All of the dog park
rules and requirements are
available online on the District’s
Dog Exercising page.
