Time capsule: Not to be opened until 2043
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
It took five men to slide the 1,400-pound
capstone over the vault containing Plain
City’s bicentennial time capsule. And that’s
where the capstone will stay until the capsule
is opened in 2043.
Plain City Historical Society (PCHS)
members and village officials closed and
sealed the time capsule on the afternoon of
Nov. 7. The ceremony is the last in a series
of events celebrating Plain City’s 200th anniversary.
The monument is located just inside
the main entrance of Pastime Park,
near the pioneer statue.
“This has been a labor of love for the Historical
Society, especially Annabelle Beach
Tuller,” said Karen Vance, PCHS vice president.
“A year ago, Annie asked, ‘What about
a time capsule?’ Everyone thought it was a
great idea. No one volunteered, so she took
the project and ran with it.”
Rather than set the capsule opening for
50 or 100 years from now, the Historical Society
chose 25 years so that the school children
who submitted drawings and writings
for the capsule could be among those who
help to open it.
“I’m hoping some of those kids will be active
on council or active in the community or
even mayor then,” said Tuller, PCHS treasurer.
Photographs of every business in town
are part of the time capsule stash. In 1982,
the historical society’s founders photographed
every building in the village.
Today’s members repeated the effort this
year. Those photos, along with pictures of
area homes, sights, parades and events are
contained in an album.
This summer, PCHS members Jim and
Judy Minshall Vowell recorded interviews
with several long-time village residents. The
resulting video is now preserved in three formats
and nestled in the time capsule with
devices that can run all three.
“We didn’t know what technology would
be used in 25 years, so we included our ‘ancient’
machines,” Vance said.
The time capsule also contains books,
newspapers, price lists, menus, toys, coins,
a percolator coffee pot, a 2018 Jonathan
Alder High School yearbook, and a pair of
Crocs shoes.
All of the items are sealed in acid-free
archival plastic inside vacuum-sealed bags.
Some of the bags are in plastic tubs. Everything
sits in a 70x29x30-inch vault donated
by Ferguson Funeral Home, in business in
Plain City for 110 years. The vault sits on a
concrete slab surrounded by concrete blocks.
The limestone slab sits on top. Brian Taylor,
a public works employee with the village,
designed the monument that surrounds the
time capsule. Fellow employee Dusty
Stickel helped him build it.
At a later date, a plaque will be affixed
to the monument with this year’s date and
the date it is to be opened.
Plain City Mayor Darrin Lane thanked
everyone who made the time capsule and
the bicentennial celebration as a whole possible.
He spoke briefly about the village’s
past and its future, including its pending
shift from village to city status following the
next census.
“I am sure that 200 years ago, our founding
fathers could not imagine that what
started as a small settlement would grow
into this thriving village, nor could they
imagine that Plain City would grow to be a
city by the year 2020,” he said.
“We live in a special community that is
moving toward the future while maintaining
its history and acknowledging its past.”
Plain City public works employees lower the lid onto the vault that
contains the village’s bicentennial time capsule. They later slid a
1,400-pound capstone over the blocks surrounding the vault. The
time capsule is slated to be opened in 25 years.
Everything in Plain City’s bicentennial time capsule, from a computer
to a pair of Crocs, is sealed in acid-free plastic inside vacuum-sealed
bags.
time capsule is located
behind the
in a metal vault surrounded
by cement
blocks capped with
a limestone slab.
the time capsule
project as part of
the village’s 200th
anniversary celebration
this year.

Strong agency relationships help combat drug crime
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
The Madison County Prosecutor’s Office
had a hand in bringing together agencies
from across the Midwest to share ideas on
how to better intercept and prevent the
movement of illegal drugs in the region.
Using money confiscated from drug
seizures in the county, Prosecutor Stephen
J. Pronai and his department funded the
Shield Conference, organized by the Ohio
State Highway Patrol (OSHP) and held
Sept. 19-20 in Dublin.
Col. Paul Pride, head of the OSHP, recently
presented Pronai’s office with a certificate
of appreciation for making the
conference possible.
Representatives of 16 different entities
from 14 states took part in the conference.
Among the participants were state highway
patrols, state police, the federal Drug Enforcement
Administration, Homeland Security
Investigations, and the High Intensity
Drug Trafficking Area program.
The conference had two main goals,
Pride said. The first was to find out what
the agencies were seeing day-to-day in
terms of illegal drug movement in their
areas from the country’s southern border.
“The second goal was to figure out how we
can shield the Midwest from this scourge of
illegal narcotics coming in... what one or two
things could we collaborate on,” Pride said.
Stronger relationships among agencies
and more communication across state lines
were common themes, ones that Pride said
have aided Ohio in becoming a state to
watch for successful interdiction methods.
“We are doing this like no one else is
doing it,” he said. “You’ve got to have good
partners, and we do here.”
Lt. David J. Smith, central region criminal
patrol commander for OSHP, pointed to
the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office as
one of those good partners. He said he appreciates
not only the funding the office provided
for the conference, but also the office’s
ongoing support for training and equipment.
Pronai said the partnership goes both ways.
“You’re stopping the flow of dope into
Ohio. Anything we can do to help you, you
say the word,” Pronai said.
Over the past two years, the Prosecutor’s
Office has put hundreds of thousands of dollars
in confiscated and forfeited drug funds
back into the community for rehabilitation,
prevention and interdiction efforts. Examples
are as follows:
* For the West Jefferson post of the Ohio
State Highway Patrol—night vision goggles,
training, and a portable X-ray scanner that
allows officers to search cars for hidden
drugs without tearing the cars apart;
* For the West Jefferson Police Department—an
undercover audio recorder for controlled
drug buys and new Tasers for all
officers;
* For the London Police Department—mobile
radios, cruiser laptops, administrative
computers, and assistance
with purchasing
a dog and vehicle
for the K-9 unit;
* For the Plain
City Police Department—a
utility task
So far this year in Madison County, the
OSHP has seized 45 pounds of marijuana,
34 pounds of methamphetamine, 124
pounds of heroin and 132 pounds of cocaine.
Seizures also have included fentanyl, crack,
and prescription pills.
Across the state, the numbers are: 3,715
pounds of marijuana, 452 pounds of
methamphetamine, 253 pounds of heroin
and 467 pounds of cocaine.
Improvements made at West Jefferson school facilities
Upgrades made to track,
gym, leaky roof, and
more over the past year
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
School security, safety and system upgrades
in Jefferson Local Schools over the
last year, coupled with renovations to a
sports venue, kept facilities and transportation
Director Bob Hiss busy over the past
year.
“We’ve done a lot of repairs and large
projects,” Hiss said at the Jefferson Local
Schools Board of Education meeting on Nov.
12.
The running track in the stadium was replaced
and renovations made to the existing
shot put and long jump pits. Hallways and
classrooms were painted.
In addition to the installation of three additional
key fob access points, a control system
in the high school gymnasium was
upgraded and new cleaning equipment
using water instead of chemicals was purchased.
Recurring roof leaks at Norwood, coinciding
with parapet walls not properly flashed,
were repaired and a long-time smelly issue
at the elementary building was fixed.
The sulfur-like smell at the school, ongoing
since 2005, was finally traced to incomplete
plumbing, Hiss reported.
“I don’t know how long we complained
about the smell,” said Principal Sue Barte.
“That was great getting it fixed.”
According to Hiss, on Sept. 17 a water
line in a second-story drinking fountain at
Norwood split, flooding the hallway. He said
water restoration was completed in one day
and total restoration is now 95 percent complete,
except for a few bookcases damaged
by the water.
“I don’t know how long we
complained about the smell.
That was great getting it fixed.”
Norwood principal
In reporting on future projects, Hiss said
a redesign of the football press box is moving
ahead. Meetings were held in May and
September and electrical drawings are
being prepared for final review.
Discussions included the needs of football
personnel, including the home team and visitors,
the overall dimensions of the press box
and conceptual design.
The current press box could be expanded
by an additional eight feet. The two-story
structure would house two rooms on the
first level, one larger and another smaller
one. The second story, flanked by a wall of
windows, would be completely open for
home team use.
“There’s more headroom and more viewing
space,” said Hiss.
Other news
Superintendent William Mullett shared
his appreciation for the passage of a ballot
issue renewing a 1 percent earned income
tax for seven years.
It was the first renewal of the original,
five-year income tax that expires on Dec. 31,
2019. The tax–projected to bring in approximately
$1.6 million–is on earned income
only and does not apply to social security,
pensions, unemployment and certificates of
deposit or savings accounts.
Unlike the West Jefferson village income
tax, the school tax only impacts residents of
the school district.
“I want to say a big thank you to our community
for their support,” said Mullett.
“And I want to build on the trust we have
with our community.”
London’s K.J. Price scores on a four yard run on an opening first quarter drive
against Clinton-Massie in a high school playoff game on Nov. 10.
London traveled to neutral site Miami
Trace on Nov. 10 and defeated second
seeded Clinton-Massie 28 to 7 in the Division
four Regional semi-final high school
playoff game.
London received the opening kick off and
launched a 14 play drive that culminated
with K. J. Price’s four yard touchdown run.
With Eric Noble’s extra point kick, London
took a 7-0 lead that it never gave up.
London held on Massie’s first series, and
then mounted a four play drive highlighted
by Brennen Spiess’ 56 yard run to the one
yard line. Price plunged over from the one
to score, and with Noble’s kick, the score
was 14-0.
London held on the next series, and
started a 13 play drive, that Bricker Thiel
finished off with a one yard run. After
Noble’s point after, London led 21-0 with
1:44 left in the half. Massie then mounted
a last minute drive, scoring with 7.1 seconds
left in the half to make the score 21-7.
In the second half, after holding Massie on
downs at London’s 19 yard line, the Raiders
started a 15 play drive of their own that
ended the deep into Massie’s territory, to
take the game into the fourth quarter. After
holding Massie on downs, London started a
four play drive themselves, ending with
Spiess’ 25 yard touchdown jaunt. Noble’s
PAT set the final score at 28-7.
London was led offensively by Spiess’
165 yard rushing and Price’s rushes for 157
yards. London did not throw a pass, and the
offensive line was overwhelming. The
Raider defense was paced by Thiel’s season
high 16 tackles. Nate Wells with eight tackles
and Jayvion Stevens with six tackles
backed up a strong defensive team outing.
London is now 11-1 for the season and
faces Cincinnati Wyoming at Centerville at
7 p.m. Nov. 17 for the regional championship.
Every weekend, we see upsets
in the sports world. During postgame
press conferences, we hear
losing coaches dejectedly explain,
“We came out flat, stayed flat, and
didn’t show up to play,” while winning coaches proudly
spout, “We had great practices all week, we knew we
were ready, everyone gave their all.”
The results aren’t by accident and are often predictable.
During the practice week, one team had successfully
attained motivation, the other hadn’t.
Motivation feeds productivity, often the winning edge.
It’s amazing how routinely that simple variable is
downplayed, overlooked, or just poorly managed in so
many settings, including the business world. I recently
saw a prime example involving a United States Postal
Service worker.
Some years past, we got a new mail carrier. We’ve
had many over the years, so it was nothing new and
normally I wouldn’t notice. But this one stood out. I was
jogging down our road and heard someone shout across
the road to me, “How are you today, Mr. Burton?” It was
the new mail carrier, and I yelled back, “Fine thanks.
How about you?” I had never met him and wondered
how he even knew who I was. In the months that followed,
I saw him greeting other customers on the route
by name and wishing them a good day.
Not long after that encounter, I was working on the
lawn when he arrived with the mail. He had a distinct
spring in his walk and a smile. Again, I heard, “How are
you today, Mr. Burton?” We talked for a minute or two,
he confirmed he was the new area carrier, I thanked
him for the mail and he was off. I was so impressed, I
told my wife about it when I went inside. In all honesty,
I had never had such a polite and respectful carrier.
When I was a kid, there was a television show called
“The Merry Mailman.” I can’t help thinking about that
show when I see him doing his job every day. He fits my
childhood image: someone you just liked, who took pride
in his work, who you could trust and felt comfortable
with, a part of the neighborhood.
In the months that followed, we had a few brief discussions
beyond the traditional
“hi” you might pry out of a few of
the other carriers we’ve had. Oh,
we’ve had some decent ones, some
good ones, but also some poor ones
and nothing close to what we’ve
been lucky to currently have. I’ve
remained amazed and found it refreshing
how much he seems to
truly enjoy his job and the positive
attitude he displays. If I was still
in management, I’d jump at someone
showing his motivation and
attributes and do everything I
could to encourage this young
man’s development and potential.
Most importantly, from a customer’s point of view—
and what should be management’s point of interest—he’s
been the most efficient mail carrier we’ve had in the
many years we’ve lived here. We’ve had a few carriers
where it was not uncommon for the mail to be delivered,
then a half-hour later the block would be filled with
homeowners exchanging mail. The time the mail arrives
on the days he works is consistent, as opposed to
his scheduled off days when it tends to arrive at any
hour, most often very late as other carriers must do
their routes first, then fill in for his.
Recently, I was out front again when this mail carrier
made the rounds on our block. As he approached, I
didn’t see the usual bounce in his step. He was looking
down as he walked. I got a forced monotone, “Hello, Mr.
Burton.” I asked, “Why so glum?” He replied, “Sorry,
can’t talk. Someone apparently complained I was stopping
and talking too much to customers on my route. I
was critiqued by management.”
I was dumbfounded as he disappeared down the road
looking like a character from the AMC series, “The
Walking Dead.” My thoughts turned to an incident in
my life from some 45 years ago when my motivation
went from sky high to rock bottom in minutes. It, too,
highlights good and bad management.
I still remember the moment. It left that kind of scar
on my personal esteem, quite possibly what this postal worker will
now have. The inspector general flew into our air base for a no-notice
evaluation of our readiness. The entire base went into a frantic,
potentially pending doom mode. As fate would have it, my missile
crew was selected to represent our missile wing. We were put into
the missile control simulator where they threw various complex war
scenarios and situations at us. It remains one of the more stressful
few hours of my life.
Well, I’m happy to say we nearly aced it! The base received a high
readiness rating. My sheepish pacing around the halls, waiting for
the results, turned into a strut. A few days later my crew commander
and I were called into the squadron commander’s office. He
handed us both a personalized letter of commendation from the
wing commander. I still proudly read it from time to time. My motivation
was so high I would have re-upped for the rest of my life at
that moment.
But then, after we saluted and prepared to leave the office, the
squadron commander asked my crew commander to remain behind.
I went out in the hall and waited. My commander came out. As we
walked down the hallway, he told me the squadron commander
asked him to tell me I needed a haircut. Say what? Yes, a haircut
was in order, it was on my checklist, but I was no Ringo Starr.
Maybe a little selective clear cutting was in order, but it wasn’t that
bad and most importantly, that was not the time to convey that. My
sky-high morale left me. Motivation employed at its best and worst,
within moments.
Some years after leaving the military, I was looking for employment.
I took the postal service exam and later received an offer in
the mail. By then, I’d already taken a career job. Based on what I’ve
heard over the years since then and the how this young, high potential
postal carrier has been needlessly potentially demotivated,
I’m convinced I made the right decision.
I was just reading where the USPS lost $65 billion over the last
11 fiscal years. Its business model remains highly flawed. Its packaging
and shipping segment are sustainable, but its mail segment
is not. In fairness, their hands remained tied by the politics of Congress
and the Postal Regulatory Commission who continue to prevent
them from implementing many difficult, but common sense and
necessary fixes to keep up with the times. The band-aid answer then
always defaults to increasing the price of mail postage, thus ensuring
more declining mail volume and more self-perpetuating losses.
With all the ongoing problems the Postal Service faces, the one
area it can and should control is the motivation of what is still its
greatest asset—its employees. They need to be productive now more
than ever in a difficult business environment. Motivation needs to
be at the forefront. Management needs to understand that concept
and nourish it, not stifle employee morale. Until they start using
robots or drones, we don’t need unmotivated zombies roaming the
streets with the mail.
Jonathan Alder school board and students rock out
By Sandi Latimer
Curriculum Director Misty Swanger, and
Staff Writer
Treasurer Aaron Johnson.
Then everyone adjourned to the music
The recent Jonathan Alder Board of Education
meeting got off to a rockin’ good
room for a demonstration of bucket drumming.
In this exercise fourth graders overturned
plastic drums and beat the bottom
start.
The board, meeting at Plain City Elementary
School, heard first from second
or the rim, and even tipped the bucket that
came to rest on their feet. Teacher Cheryl
graders in the Fundamentals program, led
Manbeck projected the music score on the
by teacher Julie Page. One student pretended
to be the teacher and several other
screen so students could follow along. She
also had the appropriate music playing in
students sat on the floor as the ‘teacher’ ran
the background. The first selection — “Rock
his ‘students’ through an exercise in vowels.
Around the Clock” — had the audience clapping,
toe tapping and swaying. The second
Students then mingled with the board
members, Superintendent Gary Chapman,
selection was not as familiar, “Sweet Home
A helping hand for moms
Community Baby Shower
in Mount Sterling
Alabama.”
The board moves its meetings around to
different schools in the district and always
hears from students as to what they are
doing in the classroom that may be unusual.
The board’s next meeting is at 6:30 p.m. on
Dec. 10, at Canaan Middle School.
Other news
Chapman announced the reception of
three grants:
Jeannette Oliver came with pre-school
age daughter Aurora in tow. Others came
with husbands or boyfriends or other members
of the family.
Most of the women were moms-to-be, but
Oliver had given birth six and a half weeks
prior. Little Gloria Anne was being cared for
at home while Oliver came to a baby shower
at the Community Center not far from her
Mount Sterling home.
“This is all new to me,” Oliver said as she
strolled down the hallway of the center
where a variety of maternal health and
other exhibitors had set up displays to hand
out information to the mothers.
While Oliver talked to Diane Francescon
about what to do when baby gets sick, her
daughter, Aurora, was decked out in a pink
coat and pink gloves, which gave her difficulties
opening a book.
When asked how she likes her baby sister,
she replied, “She cries all the time.”
And what does she do then. “I sing,” Aurora
said, and her mother affirmed it.
Aurora then started singing “I’m a Little
Teapot” and “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.”
Oliver was one of 17 moms or moms-tobe
who attended the baby shower put on by
the Madison County Department of Job and
Family Services and offering information
and items the women may not get elsewhere,
said Amy Hix, a parent educator.
The department started this project two
years ago and stage two events a year, one
in the spring and one in November, each in
a different community.
“In those two years we have reached one
hundred moms,” she said.
Large items, like a crib and mattress,
stroller, and car seat, were purchased with
monetary donations to the project while
smaller items were donated by businesses,
individuals and even inmates at London
Correctional.
to stocking up on the necessities, moms
had a buffet dinner and could view short
programs on maternal health. The event
is held twice a year in the spring and in
Moms received tickets upon registration
and they could use them to drop in jars in
hopes of winning an item they needed.
They were also welcome to take the
smaller items they would need.
Impaired driving: A deadly danger at anksgiving
Madison County Public Health and the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration joined forces
this Thanksgiving to remind drivers that whether
under the influence of illegal drugs, prescription drugs,
or alcohol, any form of impaired driving is deadly dangerous
- and illegal.
Their message is clear: “If You Feel Different, You
Drive Different. Drive Sober During Thanksgiving.”
“Too often, while celebrating with family and friends
over Thanksgiving weekend, impaired drivers get behind
the wheel,” warned Amber Snyder, health educator.
“But whether impaired by alcohol, marijuana, or
anything else, it can be deadly to drive under the influence.
No one should ever take that risk.”
Drunk-driving-related crashes spike during the
Thanksgiving holiday season. According to NHTSA,
from 2013 to 2017, more than 800 people died in alcohol-impaired-driving
crashes during the Thanksgiving
holiday period (6 p.m. Wednesday to 5:59 a.m. Monday),
making it the deadliest holiday on our roadways.
During 2017, more than one out of every three traffic
fatalities during the Thanksgiving holiday period involved
an alcohol-impaired driver.
Also, a new threat is emerging: drug-impaired driving.
From 2007 to 2016, marijuana usage doubled
among drivers killed in crashes, and in 2016, 42 percent
of the drivers killed in fatal crashes who were tested,
tested positive for drugs.
Excessive alcohol and drug intoxication are also
prevalent over Thanksgiving due in part to cultural
phenomenons like “Blackout Wednesday” and “Danksgiving”
that highlight and even encourage the heavy
consumption of alcohol and marijuana throughout the
holiday weekend.
That is why this Thanksgiving holiday, NHTSA and
its partners are doing even more to save lives on the
road. A nationwide social media blitz–featuring hashtags
#BoycottBlackoutWednesday and #DitchDanksgiving–will
help deliver some new lifesaving messages
into the public conversation and encourage positive actions
that can help reduce danger on the roadways.
Impaired driving in any form is illegal in all 50
states. Whether a person is feeling a little high, buzzed,
or stoned, wasted, or drunk, he or she is impaired and
should never get behind the wheel.
Madison County Public Health recommends these
simple tips to stay safe on the road while celebrating
this Thanksgiving:
●Plan a way to safely get home before the Thanksgiving
festivities begin.
●Always designate a sober driver.
●If you are impaired, take a taxi, call a sober friend
or family member, or use public transportation.
●Download NHTSA’s SaferRide mobile app, which
helps you identify a sober ride home and your location
for pickup.
●If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact
local law enforcement.
●If you know someone who is about to drive while
impaired, take their keys and help them make safe,
sober travel arrangements to where they are going.
By working together, we can save lives and help keep
America’s roadways safe.
Sidewalk work
Messenger photo by Sandi Latimer
Igel employees Vince Rike, (left) Justin McCall and Brian Cofer, pause in their work in front of the West
Jefferson Middle and High School building. They had put down concrete for a sidewalk. The work was estimated
to cost at least $5,000, according to the workers, but the sidewalk was donated because John
Igel, owner of the Columbus company, likes to donate to charity, especially schools and Catholic churches.
The work was done Nov. 12.

Auditions
Since its beginnings in 1997, Madison
County Arts Council (MCAC) has presented
“Sounds of the Season” each December.
This year, the event will take place at 7
p.m. Dec. 16 at London First United
Methodist Church, 52 N. Main St.
As always, a plethora of talented performers
from Madison County and surrounding
areas will participate in the
holiday celebration of music.
For those who would like a shot at performing
in “Sounds of the Season,” MCAC is
holding auditions from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 19-
20 at Brennan Loft, 158 S. Main St., London.
Bring a prepared number and a copy of
the sheet music if you need accompaniment.
A pianist will be on hand at auditions. No
CDs or digital accompaniment is permitted.
Performers of all kinds are welcome.
For those who are selected to perform, a
rehearsal will be held at 9 a.m. Dec. 15.
A non-profit organization, MCAC is dedicated
to providing and fostering education
and entertainment through sponsorship
and presentation of the performing and visual
arts in Madison County.
In addition to “Sounds of the Season,”
MCAC annually presents a countywide
summer musical (this year’s was “Shrek’)
and a Young Artist Showcase, and awards
fine arts scholarships to students from
Madison County’s high schools.

Toy drives
Want to bring cheer to families in need
this holiday season? Check out these opportunities
to donate toys and more around
Madison County.
• Madison County Job & Family Services
and London Fire Department. Every
year, the Holiday Helpers Firefighters Toy
Drive provides gifts to between 700 and 800
children, ages 0 to 12.
The public can get involved a couple of
ways, either by adopting a family and purchasing
gifts specifically for those children,
or by donating toys or money without adopting
a particular family.
Holiday Helpers supplies adopters with
first names, ages and wish lists of the children.
Participants then spend up to $75 per
child and purchase no more than three gifts
per child.
Donations can be dropped off at Job &
Family Services, 200 Midway St., London.
Madison County families in need who
want to receive gifts are encouraged to sign
up as soon as possible; the deadline is Dec.
19. Applications are available at Job &
Family Services.
For details, call (740) 852-4770.
• Tri-County Joint Fire District in Mount
Sterling. It is time again to fill out applications
for the Tri-County Joint Fire Fighters’
Toy Drive. Applicants must provide identification
and proof of residence, such as an
electric bill or phone bill, and must reside
within the Tri-County Fire running district.
The application period runs through Dec.
7. Forms can be picked up at the fire house,
7 W. Columbus St.: Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-
5 p.m.
Toy and monetary donations will be accepted
at the fire house until Dec. 7. The
drive will benefit ages 0-12 years old. For
details, call (740) 869-2643.
• Plain City Churches. The Plain City
Church Fellowship is making plans for their
annual Christmas Basket project. In 2017,
baskets and gifts were distributed to 156
families which included over 750 individuals,
approximately 500 of whom were children.
The fellowship is asking for names, addresses
and phone numbers of families or
individuals in Plain City or Jonathan Alder
School District who might need assistance
over the holidays. Names can be turned in
by calling Plain City Presbyterian Church
at (614) 873-5011 or Dave McCray at (614)
408-1617 by Nov. 15. All information is kept
confidential.
While the largest portion of food for the
baskets is purchased by the fellowship
through the Plain City Food Bank and at
local super markets, food can also be donated
through local churches, at any
Jonathan Alder school or at the Plain City
Food Bank.
Monetary donations also are welcome
and may be given to local churches or made
LOCAL
out to Christmas Basket Fund and mailed
to Plain City Presbyterian Church, 231 E.
Main St., Plain City OH 43064.
Another way to participate is to “adopt”
a family and buy the Christmas presents
that go with their food basket.
Families may be adopted through local
churches or by calling the Presbyterian
Church or McCray. Guidelines will be provided
for purchasing gifts for appropriate
age levels.
Volunteers are needed to pack and deliver
baskets at 9 a.m. Dec. 22 at Plain City
Presbyterian Church.
For more information, call Jim Kaufman,
food drive chairman, at (937) 243-
• West Jefferson Community Association
Adopt-a-Family and Veterans of Foreign
Wars (VFW) Post 7005. These two
groups are collecting gifts for children up to
high school age who live in West Jefferson
and/or are enrolled in Jefferson Local
Schools.
Participants are invited to donate new,
unwrapped gifts or money for the Community
Association to purchase gifts. Monetary
donations should be made out to “Community
Association Adopt-a-Family” and
mailed to the attention of Vickie Edwards
at P.O. Box 142, West Jefferson, OH 43162.
Another way to help is by “adopting”
families for which to buy gifts. Tags that list
the clothing sizes and toy wishes of area
children decorate trees at West Jefferson
Hardware. Participants take a tag and fulfill
the wishes listed on it, then return the
gifts to the hardware store by the date listed
on the tag.
Additionally, the VFW itself would like
to adopt area families who have military
backgrounds.
For more information about donating
toys, adopting families, or referring families
(with or without military backgrounds), call
Edwards at (614) 582-1328. Area families in
need can call Edwards for an application.
Applications will be cross-checked with
other non-profit organizations and Madison
County Job and Family Services to prevent
duplication.
Lights of Love
Set for Nov. 29, this year’s Lights of Love
will start with a tree lighting ceremony at
5:30 p.m. at the Park Avenue Medical
Building entrance, 55 Park Ave., London.
The centerpiece is a 14-foot tall tree.
From 6 to 8 p.m., guests are invited to
visit with Santa and enjoy refreshments at
the Season Spectacular inside the medical
building. The festivities also include trolley
rides on Main Street to see holiday light displays.
Lights of Love is designed as a way to
pay tribute to loved ones. Participants can
choose to honor or remember someone by
Holiday memories become richer in the passing years
Toyland…once you pass its borders, you
can never return again.
As a child of the late 1950s and early
1960s, there were no mega-stores filled with
aisle upon aisle of dolls in various stages of
maturity – “Barbie” had just made her
debut and was still years away from appearing
in multiple career occupations.
Boxed games only occupied the space of
an end cap, not shelf after shelf after shelf,
and appealed mainly to children or families–no
naughty party games designed to
entertain only adults.
That was what playing cards were for.
Half of the sixth floor at Lazarus in
downtown Columbus was filled with toys
and was the place to go, especially at Christmas
time, to fill wish lists.
Visits were always planned, day-long excursions
and included stops with my mother
in the dress department, housewares and
lunch in the Colonial Room before reaching
the Holy Grail–the sixth floor.
Back at home, boys played with their
“G.I. Joes,” baseballs and bats or with plastic
bazookas in the trenches of new home
construction sites.
Count me in that last group because I
was the lone girl in a sea of neighborhood
maleness and adapted quickly to their mode
of play.
One year my grandparents thought I
would like a form of new technology–an
electric toothbrush.
I was ten years old and wasn’t a fan of
the old technology.
I envied my cousin–who received a football
and probably would have been more appreciative
of an electric toothbrush than I.
So, a couple of days after Christmas,
when my grandparents were made aware of
my disappointment,
I stood next to my grandmother at the
S&H Green Stamp redemption counter at
Big Bear.
I walked out of the grocery store, football
in hand, ready to play with the boys.
Speaking of “The Bear” (my grandma’s
phraseology), I loved the “toy wall” nestled
between the canned goods and cleaning supply
aisles.
Imagine, going into a grocery store, turning
a corner, and coming face-to-face with plastic
bags of dinosaurs, army men or cowboys.
Cheap, imitation Barbies smiled down at
me with perpetual grins and legs that broke
off as soon as they were moved.
Jacks, paddle balls and mini-bowling
pins in containers hung precariously on
steel rods next to flocked animals. Magic
column
Places
slates with their plastic
pointers awaited
young artists.
I was amazed to
find these toys in a
market or drug store.
One time, my mother
won a small shopping
trip to Big Bear and
let me pick out one
toy from the “wall.”
I felt like I won the
mother lode at an
FAO Schwartz toy
store.
I remember when
potato chip companies
stapled coloring books
to their bags during the holidays.
Linda
Dillman
I couldn’t wait to get home on a Saturday
morning in December, rip the Conn’s chip
bag apart to get to the coloring book and
spend the next hour with my crayons in artful
bliss.
The best and most unexpected places to
dream and plot and plan were the local
hardware stores, at least to me and only
during the weeks leading up to Christmas.
As a kid, I never enjoyed going there, but, as
if by magic, toys suddenly appeared around
the holidays and I was the one bugging my
father about making a “Zettler run.”
While my father looked for electrical
wire, I stood transfixed in front of shelves
lined with farm playsets filled with plastic
animals and metal barns.
At the end of the aisle, there were always
brand new bikes, shiny red wagons and kidsized
wheel barrows.
Don’t get me wrong. I loved going to
Lazarus and wandering through aisle after
aisle of neatly stacked toys, but the unexpected
joy of the seasonal toy section at the
hardware store was more magical to the
younger version of me.
It was like seeing a shooting star or a
unicorn–a rare happenstance that you
can’t forget.
As long as I have these memories, those
Toyland borders won’t be breeched and that
young girl who played in the construction
trenches and colored the potato chip pages
lives on.
