Celtic Beer Festival 2018 and 

our 20 th Anniversary! 

Where have two decades gone? Although I 

am proud to be working behind the top bar on 

the first shift for the twentieth time I won’t be 

the only Brewery employee or guest who can 

claim to have attended every festival including 

Roger Ryman, our Brewing Director, whose idea 

it was when he first joined us in 1999. Thank you 

to every one of you for your amazing support 

over those 20 years. As part of our thank 

you from the Brewery we are sponsoring the 

special 20th Anniversary celebration band at 

6.40pm which I look forward to introducing. 

I am pleased to report that there continues 

to never be a dull day in the lives of anyone 

connected with the company. We are fortunate 

enough to continue receiving prizes and 

accolades for our pubs, people and beers but 

in April they were all capped with a particularly 

prestigious one – The Queen’s Award for 

Enterprise (Sustainable Development). 

We were presented with the award by 

Cornwall’s Lord Lieutenant Colonel Edward 

Bolitho OBE. Receiving this award could 

only have happened with the unstinting 

contribution that all our employees and 

licensees make to the Brewery and its 

well-being. Of course, that is underpinned by 

you, our valued customers. So, everyone take 

a bow! 

The award was quickly followed in May by the 

official opening of our multi-million-pound 

investment in the new Hare Brewery where 

our portfolio of Bath Ales is brewed and 

packaged. If you are in the area please visit our 

website, www.bathales.com and enjoy a tour 

of the site. At the opening we launched a new 

lager (Sulis) and ale (Lansdown IPA) both of 

which are receiving favourable comments 

from customers. 

Both Tribute and Proper Job have received 

makeovers in respect of new pump clips 

and we have been pleased to work with Jack 

Stein on endorsing Proper Job with food. 

Meanwhile our latest marketing campaign for 

Tribute – Quality Speaks For Itself – earned 

our Marketing Team no less than 3 trophies at 

the Beer and Cider Marketing Awards including 

the top Grand Prix award for best overall 

marketeers in the business.

A Guide To The Programme

Meanwhile on the pub front we received 

Pub Champion 2018 at the British Beer and 

Pub Awards. This recognised the fact that 

we “have gone above and beyond to secure 

pubs for future generations”. We continue to 

acquire new sites of which The Griffin in Bath 

was the most recent while also maintaining 

a constant refurbishment programme of 

pubs, inns and hotels in our estate. The two 

largest of these were completed at The Pier 

House, Charlestown and the Cat and Fiddle at 

Clyst St Mary in Devon. I would encourage you 

to experience the refurbishments first hand 

if you are ever in either area – you won’t 

be disappointed. 

It should also be celebrated that our tenants 

Alex and Tanya Williams of The Polgooth 

Inn were voted Licensees of the Year in 

a national competition run by the British 

Institute of Innkeeping. Kim Barker at The Ship, 

Pentewan was a finalist and they should all be 

congratulated for putting St Austell pubs on 

the national map. 

our costs and ensuring that as much money as 

possible that we raise goes to the good causes 

funded through our Charitable Trust. Huge 

thanks must also go to the companies that 

sponsor the event. Last year’s Festival raised 

in the region of £40,000 and I estimate that 

over the 20 years we have raised a total of over 

£200,000. If that isn’t something to celebrate 

what is? 

2018 has been a year of extremes – the 

Beast from the East followed by one of the 

hottest summers on record. In between was 

a national CO2 shortage at the same time as 

the World Cup. All of these had their different 

challenges, but I am pleased to report that we 

have all survived to enjoy another pint or two! 

Our Beer Festival acts as a great finale to 

the year so for the twentieth time of asking, 

please enjoy yourselves on this very special 

20th Anniversary and I wish you a very Happy 

Christmas and prosperous 2019. Cheers!

The Celtic Beer Festival this year celebrates 

a very special landmark, being the 20th 

consecutive year that this remarkable event 

has been held in the atmospheric old brewery 

cellars. I wonder how many people here today 

have attended all twenty events – I have! I also 

wonder how many people here today were not 

even born when we held that very first festival, 

or for how many the Celtic Beer Festival has 

just been part of their lives, a sort of beer 

drinking ‘rite of passage’ and a cornerstone of 

the Cornish social calendar for as long as they 

can remember! It is hard to believe but when 

we held that first festival, there was no Tribute, 

no Proper Job and no Korev. We were able to 

offer lots of Tinner’s Ale, XXXX Mild and Hick’s 

Strong Ale, with Duchy Bitter and Wrecker’s 

available on keg. To add some variety we even 

utilised our on-site micro-brewery to brew 

a couple of special brews especially for the 

festival, and invited other brewers to donate a 

cask to help support the charitable fundraising 

that has always been an underlying principal 

of the festival. Please remember when you are 

enjoying your beer today that all of the profits 

from the festival are donated to the local 

charities and worthy causes supported by the 

St Austell Brewery Charitable Trust. 

Through the twenty years of the festival we 

have seen little change in the basic format for 

the event. It seems that some formulas just 

seem to work and do not need updating. The 

enjoyment of good beer in a warm atmosphere 

in the company of good friends is a basic 

human pleasure and appeals to our desire for 

warmth and conviviality, particularly in the 

dark winter nights when the weather is wet and 

foul outside (as it has been on so many of our 

festivals). There is something special about 

subterranean drinking; it’s not refined but is 

somehow uniquely appealing, perhaps even 

with a hint of illicitness that all adds to the 

spice. Whatever it is that makes the festival so 

appealing, it needs little change and it seems 

that people just keep coming back! 

There have been other common threads 

through the twenty years of the festival, and 

as ‘no-man can stand in the path of time’, 

there has, and will continue to be, a gradual 

transition in the faces behind the festival and 

the people that actually make it happen. It 

was with our Estate Director, Adam Luck, that 

I first concocted the plan for the festival back 

in 1999. Adam retires this year from his role 

of looking after our pub business (although 

he will remain in a non-executive capacity on 

the Company Board). I am sure that anyone 

who had the honour to work or do business 

with Adam would know the light spirit and 

common touch that he was able to bring to any 

situation. Adam’s grasp of the simple things 

that make people happy, alongside his love 

of a good party, were inspirational in creating 

the simple values of the Celtic Beer Festival. 

Another festival highlight for every one of 

those twenty years has been ‘Lenny B’s disco’, 

particularly ‘Sing-along-a-Lenny’ to which we 

have all roared out our lungs to popular tracks 

before the lights go on and we are all turfed 

out, rosy cheeked and happy into the howling 

November night. Lenny Barrett has been a 

brewery institution for years. Known as the 

‘Jack Dee’ of the brewery, it is not evident that 

he has actually enjoyed any of these festivals, 

but the fact that he works so hard and tirelessly 

suggests that behind the dead pan façade he 

probably really is having fun! Len has been so 

much more to the festival than just a DJ and the 

work that he puts in each year is colossal, both 

in the set up and cleaning up the aftermath on 

the Sunday morning. This, his 20th festival, we 

are advised will be his final and finding others 

that will step up in future years will not be 

easy. However, we do have new blood and I 

should make special mention of Rob Orton,

Philippa Skinner and the rest of the Festival 

Committee. I have been directly involved in the 

planning arrangements for well over fifteen 

years, both in terms of the huge amount of 

organisation and the hard graft when it comes 

to stillaging and tapping all those casks. Work 

commitments have proved a distraction over 

the last few years, particularly since I have had 

the privilege of working with our colleagues at 

Bath Ales to help them design and construct 

the amazing new Hare Brewery, and I have 

had to step back from the practicalities of the 

festival. However, having done it many times 

I do know what’s involved and I would like to 

take this opportunity to thank every one of 

the committee for their hours of dedication 

and pure hard graft to make this thing happen. 

The festival is in good hands for many years 

to come. 

years before that, having joined the business 

in November 1972. After many years working 

in brewery production, Mervyn has become 

a familiar face in the trade, supporting our 

customers and licensees and helping ensure 

that our beer that is served to consumers in 

the pub is every bit as good as it was when it 

left the brewery. Mervyn’s enjoyment of the 

Celtic Beer Festival means that we have not 

seen the last of him. He is here today serving 

beer, and I am sure that this will not be the last 

time that he gets behind the bar to pour a few 

pints. Much appreciated, Merv! 

I very much hope that you enjoy your 

day. Please drink responsibly, respect our 

neighbours when you leave, and get home 

safely. Most importantly, have an amazing day 

and enjoy the beer! 

Whilst on about long service, I could not finish 

without giving special mention to my longtime 

colleague and very good friend, Mervyn 

Westaway, who retires this November after a 

remarkable 46 years-service to the Company. 

I feel like a seasoned campaigner having been 

with the business for 20 years, but it staggers 

me to think that Mervyn had already put in 26
