BRINGING HISTORY HOME
THE WHITE HOUSE – MILFORD
ON SEA
The White House was built by Mr. and Mrs
Walker Munro whose wealth came from the
Walker side of the family which had become
rich through coal. Before being nationalised the
coal mines in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, were
originally owned by the Barber and Walker
families. [BARBER WALKER & COMPANY,
Colliery Proprietors, Eastwood]
There have been various buildings on the site of
the present Rhinefield House since the time of
William the Conqueror and in 1877, many of the
Crown Lands were “privatised” and Rhinefield
passed to the Walker family. In 1885 the only
daughter of the Walker family became engaged
to Lieutenant Munro RN, and her father´s
engagement present was £250,000 [approx.
£30M today] with which to build a family home
at Rhinefield.
The original house at Rhinefield was pulled
down to make way for construction of the
present property and after their marriage in
1887, the couple adopted the name Walker-
Munro, and supervised the construction of an
impressive countryseat comprising the Great
House, a hunting lodge, stables, gardener´s
bothy and a gate lodge.
liner with a galleon weather vane, a room at the
top with stunning views, porthole windows and
a lighthouse turret housing a staircase.
There were his and hers changing pavilions at
the seaward end of colonnades enclosing the
courtyard and a dinghy hanging in davits over
the wall.
The Walker Munros only stayed there for one
month each year apparently with all 45 of their
servants. Lieutenant Commander Walker-
Munro died in 1923 and his wife in 1934. The
estate passed to their son, Major Walker
Munro, who had emigrated to Kenya, and he
sold The White House in 1938.The purchasers
were Middlesex County Council who, at first,
used it as a convalescent home for women
tuberculosis patients.
At the outbreak of WWII, the house was
requisitioned for military use and after the war
it reopened for male TB sufferers and the NHS
took it over in 1948. Three years later it became
one of the first hospitals to cater specifically for
child TB sufferers.
From 1963, with TB virtually eradicated, it
became a school for those with special needs,
before falling into disuse by 1983 as it was too
expensive to maintain. Squatters and drug
addicts moved in, vandalizing and removing the
tiles and generally leaving it in a sorry state.
Although several schemes for redevelopment
were proposed, no work was undertaken and
the buildings fell into severe disrepair and there
are newspaper reports from 1993 about the
possible demolition of the White House.
The site was bought by Colten Developments
Ltd. in 1997, for £950K, and the house
converted into 14 apartments in the old house
with 2 lodges and 2 separate bungalows on the
seafront.
The MOSHRS website is a core part of its
Bringing History Home project supported by the
Reputedly building Rhinefield House did not use
Heritage Lottery Fund and Milford-on-Sea Parish
up all of the money, and they purchased about
Council.
6 acres of land from the Cornwallis West estate
The next edition of Village Voice will feature a
WILDLIFE MATTERS ……... to all of us
NEW AGRICULTURAL BILL
In September, the Government introduced its
new Agricultural Bill. As expected, it contains
provisions about paying farmers for managing
their farms during the transition period
following our exit from the EU. The Bill tries to
reassure us that our food supply chains will be
protected. It is complex legislation which I will
not bore you with, but how will this change help
wildlife and habitats?
Before the Government produced the Bill,
independent wildlife groups such as the RSPB,
BTO and our national Wildlife Trusts provided
evidence and suggestions to make sure that
wildlife could also benefit from change. The
Wildlife Trusts said:
• The recovery of our diminishing wildlife would
depend on the new Agricultural Bill enabling
farmers to create and restore natural habitats
because 70% of our land is farmed.
• Farmers should receive public money for
producing benefits to society, such as creating
habitats for wildlife, conserving soils and
protecting communities against flooding.
The Trusts says that farming with nature makes
sense and that healthier soils would help nature
recover – from pollinators to natural pest
controls. The Red List for bees says that one in
ten wild bees face extinction and that over the
past 50-years. Half the bee, butterfly and moth
species studied in the 2013 State of Nature
Report had declined! Ellie Brodie, senior policy
manager for the Wildlife Trusts says: “It’s time
the Treasury acknowledged that the public want
to see tangible change to meet the scale of the
challenge that lies ahead”. There is further
concern about how the new legislation will be
enforced, especially because much of the policy
is not formally linked to the Bill and so has no
legal underpinning!
On a positive note, there is at least certainty
that the current payments for Higher Level
Stewardship and Countryside Stewardship
schemes will be available through the 7-year
transition period, which allows farmers to be a
little more confident in making their future
business decisions.
‘BRENT GEESE’ – ARCTIC SIBERIA
TO THE SOLENT
Keen-eyed birdwatchers will have noticed the
first arrivals of the Dark-bellied Brent Geese to
their wintering grounds along the Solent. A
single bird spotted on the 8th October could
well have been an adult which sometimes oversummers
here. The
first small numbers
arrived in our part
of the Solent from
their Siberian
breeding grounds
on about 15th
October, with 100
recorded between
Hurst Castle and Saltgrass Lane, Milford.
The Solent is a stronghold for Brents holding
some 30% of all Brent Geese visiting the UK in
the winter, of which up to 13% can be found
along our part of the coastline. Their journey
starts in the Arctic tundra, where extreme
weather conditions allow them just 3 or 4-
months in which
to bring up their
Please mention The Village Voice when responding to adverts
young. They
depart Siberia in
mid-September
and start arriving
back here in
early/mid-
October, having
migrated some
2,500 miles. When they depart in March/April
they stop off along the Baltic coast before
reaching the Arctic in early June. Family groups
migrate together, mostly at night.
NOTES FROM THE SOLENT CELLAR
The Art of Food & Wine Matching
The festive period will soon be upon us, so we
thought we would offer some advice on food
and wine matching. We think that a meal can
be enhanced by a well thought out wine to
match, and we are always here to help guide
and advise on classic or more interesting
pairings.
How about one of these wines to enjoy on Christmas day?
When looking for a wine to pair to a particular
dish it is worth considering the following
factors:
Acidity
All wine has acidity and this can be detected in
the mouth, high acidity in a wine would be a
similar sensation to when sucking on a lemon.
Wines with high acidity work amazingly well
with fatty foods, which is why fish and chips
goes so well with Champagne! A wine with
lemony acidity is also like adding a seasoning to
a dish, for example the classic oysters and
Muscadet pairing. Wines with a low acidity
tend to be from hotter climates and richer in
flavours and these go with richer flavoured
foods.
Body & Tannin
When we talk about the body of a wine, it is to
do with the power and strength in flavour.
Tannins come from grape seeds, skins and also
any ageing in oak add body and dryness to a
wine. A full bodied, tannic wine will go well
with fuller flavoured foods, for example
Chateauneuf du Pape which is full bodied and
tannic pairs well to meats such as slow roast
shoulder of lamb or roast beef. Lighter bodied
wines with low tannins such as Pinot Noir,
Beaujolais or Mencia pair well to white meats
and meaty fish.
Sweetness
At this festive time of year it's
a real treat to pair a dessert
course with a sweet wine. As
a general rule a wine to go
with a dessert should be
sweeter than the food. We
have an amazing selection
of sweet wines to pair to
different types of dessert.
Just a small selection of
our selection of dessert
wines
Classic Festive Matches
Smoked Salmon Canapés - Try pairing these
with a Chablis, Gruner Veltliner, Albarino or a
dry Riesling.
Turkey and the trimmings - A white with a bit
of body to stand up to the medley of flavours. I
suggest something from Southern Burgundy,
Pinot Gris or an aromatic white Rhone. On the
red front, something juicy with bright cherry/
cranberry fruit such as Pinot Noir, Barbera
d'Alba, unoaked Spanish Garnacha or
Beaujolais.
Mince Pies - Mince pies tend to be enjoyed in
the afternoon or with a bit of blue cheese, try
pairing to an off dry Madeira or a Moscatel.
(*Madeira Saturday tasting is on Dec 1st*)
Cheese - Most people go for red wine when
pairing to the cheeseboard, but often this
overpowers the flavour. This year ,try serving a
white wine from the Savoie or Jura region, an
off-dry Riesling or Muscat Beaumes de Venise,
or if you're a fortified wine lover try with a
nutty Amontillado or white port.
Pop into the shop for help with your food and
wine matching this Christmas!
MERRY WOOFMAS
At Christmas, if dogs could talk, they'd
probably tell us that we'd gone bonkers.
Throughout the year they happily plod on in
their cuddly, companionable way, expecting
or wanting nothing in return except your love
and attention, a nice walk, some sniffing time,
a regular bowl of tasty grub and some clean
water.
personalised label; "It’s bound to get your
dog's tail wagging and is best enjoyed either
on its own or poured over food in order to
fully appreciate those savoury flavours",
might be on the way. Or perhaps there's the
chance of another tin of those 'Good Dog
Hand Baked Biscuits' with his name on them.
Fido's keeping his paws crossed that all this
good stuff doesn't come with the
embarrassment of having to wear another of
those Christmas reindeer or red snowflake
jumpers, or the frightful pongfest of 'Kennel
Number 5' or 'Old Spike' dog perfumes; "a
bouquet of uplifting floral scents in a bottle,
Kennel 5 Cologne will give your dog instant
sophistication and will make them smell
divine", that he had to put up with last time
all this craziness happened!
‘Catherine Dashwood Photography’
Unexpectedly once a year at Christmas they
wake up as usual, only to find that for some
reason that they simply can't fathom out, they
are required to do odd things - like wear
funny hats, bright jumpers and go round with
red bows tied to their collars. They go along
with all this because they vaguely remember
that last time all this frivolous nonsense
happened, there was some very tasty extra
food and drink too!
Fido's actually not as daft as he looks. He will
have noticed that, instead of getting the usual
quota of cuddles, his owner has recently been
spending even more time touching that
screen thingy that she always carries around,
and buying stuff online. So he doesn't mind
too much, because it probably means that
some 'Woofmas Christmas Beer' brewed
especially for dogs and with its own
All these (yes, they do really exist) — plus
some more sensible options — are available
Christmas, make sure you have a good one.
distinguished
residents.
The Milford-on-Sea
Historical Record
Society (Reg Charity
no. 1177587), is leading the preparations for
next year’s commemoration of Cornwallis’
bicentenary and celebration of the strong naval
tradition of the area. We are fortunate to have
the active support of The 1805 Club, the New
Forest National Park Authority, the St Barbe
Museum and Art Gallery, Milford-on-Sea Parish
Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Since 1066, there have been three times when
England has been under serious threat of
imminent invasion: the first was against the
Armada sent by Philip of Spain in 1588; the
most recent in 1940 when Hitler assembled his
forces in the continental ports opposite the
English coast; and, sometimes forgotten, in
1803/5, we stood alone against Napoleon as he
planned his invasion of England.
Napoleon had to gain naval control of the
English Channel to execute his invasion plans,
saying “Let us be masters of the Channel for six
hours and we are masters of the world."
It was Admiral Cornwallis, as Commander in
Chief of the Channel Fleet, who was “responsible
both for successfully preventing the French
invasion of Britain and deciding on the necessity
of creating and dispatching to Spanish waters
the nucleus of that fleet that Nelson was to
command at Trafalgar” Alan Schom, “Trafalgar
Countdown to Battle 1803-1895.”
Between 1800 to 1809 the congregation of
Milford church included three admirals:
Cornwallis, Peyton and Man. Each played a
significant role in the wars with France and will
feature in the exhibition.
Dates for your Diary
- Service of Commemoration
On the 5 th July 2019 there will be a service at All
Saints Church, Milford.
- Commemorative weekend activities 5th to
7th July 2019
• See a re-enactment of the arrival of the news
of Trafalgar, and events on Milford village
green.
• Explore our local naval history at Buckler’s
Hard.
• Visit a Royal Navy craft moored at Lymington.
• Walk a part of the Naval Heritage trail
between Milford and Buckler’s Hard, taking in
Lymington, Boldre and Baddesley.
- Exhibition from 4 th June to 31 st August 2019
Planning is well advanced with St Barbe
Museum and Art Gallery and the New Forest
National Park to organise an exhibition
celebrating the strong local links with the navy
of Cornwallis’ time, the role played by the New
Forest and the contributions made by the three
Milford admirals as well as others in the area.
We are working hard to fund the entire project
through individuals, charities and organisations
with strong ties with our nautical tradition or
with Hampshire. While we have received
generous support so far, we are continuing to
seek funding for the project, especially the
exhibition. If you are able to make a donation
towards the bicentenary events, please use the
contact details below.
Thank you for your support.
TRAVEL guide
Thailand: In Part 2, Christina explores the
Elephant Hills & Phuket
Having just returned from Thailand for the
second time in four weeks, I thought it best to
write this article on the rest of my experiences in
this beautiful country.
My second trip was with Turkish Airlines via
Istanbul as they fly direct to Phuket, with the
lowest Business Class fares in the industry. I
spent the second half of my trip in Phuket so
flying home from there was a real bonus.
I went, initially, to Bangkok again and visited the
reclining Buddha and the Grand Palace where on
this occasion I was given a blessing by a monk!
After a whistle stop tour of Bangkok which
included several hotel visits and an evening at
the Sky Bar, we flew to Phuket and had a twohour
drive north to the Jungle and Elephant
Hills.
This was the highlight of my trip; we spent two
nights and three days here staying in a luxury
tent. Our first day was spent with the elephants
in their jungle sanctuary. The elephants are free
to roam the area and we were able to wash and
feed them. It was a wonderful experience and
you can spend as
much time with
these amazing
creatures as you
wish.
Afterwards, we
were taken on a
canoe trip down
the river which
was a beautifully
peaceful
experience.
The evenings at Elephant
Hills are quiet, with local
school children showing
off their Thai dancing
skills as well as a cooking
demonstration, and then
dinner with all of the
other explorers.
After a surprisingly good
night’s sleep, we spent the second day trekking
in the jungle which was fantastic, cooking on a
barbeque in the Jungle followed, by a longtail
boat trip and kayaking around the Lake Camp.
This is also part of Elephant Hills where
customers can spend the night in a tent on the
lake.
Leaving Elephant
Hills, we made our
way down to
Phuket for hotel
visits and to see
the area. We
viewed some
stunning hotels
and interestingly,
saw many villas suitable for family groups from 4
to 16 people.
Learning about new accommodation and areas
of Thailand has been such a joy, and if you are
interested in learning or hearing further details
or would like to have a bespoke adventure
organised for you to Thailand or anywhere else
in the world, please pop in to see us at Milford
TURN UP THE VOLUME?
Do you find difficulty in hearing dialogue in
TV dramas? Can you remember when you
had no problems whatsoever in hearing
actors on the TV?
Well you’re far from alone, it’s not an
uncommon discussion for me to be
involved with when I am installing a new TV
system. But why is this and more
importantly, what can be done about it?
One problem is the naturalistic speech
actors currently use. It’s supposed to sound
more like someone speaking rather than
the old style enunciation school of acting
which, though very clear, wasn’t the way
people actually spoke.
Another issue is that dramas tend to have
dramatic music and often it is at similar
frequencies to the human voice, making
the dialogue harder to hear. The sound
technician can make allowances for this,
but it depends on the director as to how it
eventually turns out.
Further, our TV’s are getting increasingly
thinner which leaves much less room for
speakers able to reproduce the sound
without colouring it, boosting particular
frequencies as a result of how they are
manufactured.
It seems that TV manufacturers are now
starting to make sure that how the TV
sounds is more of a priority, but what
about those of us who have already make
significant investments in a new TV, what
can we do? If you just turn up the volume,
it may not make much difference other
than annoying everyone else!
Most more modern TV’s have an onscreen
menu which allows you to fiddle with all
sorts of things most people don’t look at
once the channels have been tuned. In
amongst all sorts of other settings, you will
normally find a number of different sound
settings. Commonly they will be referred to
as ‘sports’ or ‘film’ or something like that
and will change the sound that comes out
of your TV speakers when selected. It’s
worth trying them to see what difference it
makes, you can always return to the
normal or default settings.
If changing your TV settings doesn’t have
the effect you are hoping, then it may be
worth considering a soundbar. They are
available from below £100 to £ridiculous
depending on extra facilities and will
deliver the sort of sound your TV will never
be able to. It is best to ask for expert advice
before purchase as they are definitely not
all created equal!
MCV NEWS
THE OLD MILL—WOODLAND
The Milford Conservation Volunteers are
delighted that Amy and Simon Davies were
granted planning permission for the renovation
of The Old Mill. They have already been busy
de-silting the leat and thinning trees, and have
generously given the rights to the wood to the
MCV which will be sold to the community. This
reduces the carbon footprint by not having to
transport it further afield. We hope your
aspirations for the Old Mill soon become a
reality.
DOGS, FOXES & DEAD SWANS!
Regular users of the Solent Way footpath
around Sturt Pond nature reserve may have
noticed two Swan carcases.
Each year dog attacks on birds increase. Quite
often, swans have to be rescued from animals
not controlled by their owners. These attacks
are often witnessed by alarmed passers-by and
are regularly reported to
This exhausted Swan died
later at RSPCA Rescue Centre
from injuries sustained
following ‘dog attack’.
MCV. We often hear
that irresponsible dogowners
are not local
people. However, we
know that this is not
often the case. Dogs off
lead sometimes act
before owners can stop
their animals from bird
attacks. Owners are
often
highly
embarrassed and
equally upset about what their animals have
done.
A Dog Order could be made through the local
authority to introduce a ‘Dog’s on Lead’ only
policy. Maybe this is the only action that can be
taken to reduce dog attacks on swans? Let us
hope that consciences will be pricked by
leaving the carcases on view and that more
dogs are put on leads as a matter of course
when near vulnerable wild birds.
Please remember, hundreds of our winter birds
e.g. Brent Geese, have just flown from Siberia,
a 2,500-mile migratory journey. Birds are tired
and in desperate need of refuelling and rest to
help get them through our winter and ready
for their return flight in March/April, to their
Arctic breeding grounds. They do not deserve
to be chased across the Pond by owner’s who
are often seen encouraging their dogs into the
water.
STORAGE SPACE REQUIRED
MCV continues to find it difficult to store, and
season, wood extracted from the Pleasure
Grounds and space to secure our range of
mechanical conservation tools.
If you know anyone who can find a little space
at their property, or smallholding, and would
like to support MCV in this practical way,
please contact - keithmetcalf@btinternet.com
We are grateful to one local family who has
already made space in their garden for us to
store materials. Thank you.
LIVING WELL WITH DEMENTIA
Dementia is not an inevitable part of ageing,
but many people worry that they, a family
member or friend may be affected.
A lot of encouraging research is underway,
looking at both the causes and possible
treatments. It is, however, extremely important
for us to focus on how people living with
dementia in our community now, can live well,
remain as independent as possible, and are met
with understanding. It is important too that
carers feel supported. The Milford on Sea area
is “Dementia Friendly”. That means that many
individuals, voluntary organisations and
businesses have taken part in free
information sessions that offer an
understanding of dementia, and the small
things that we can all do to make a big
difference to people living with dementia.
can also affect mood. The symptoms will vary
from person to person so that no two
people’s experience is the same. By
understanding how people are affected we
can do more to make a positive contribution
to their lives.
There is much support available in our area.
So what is dementia and how does it affect
people? It is the name given to a variety of
conditions, which cause the progressive
illnesses affecting the functions of the brain
(such as Alzheimer’s and Vascular dementia).
It is not just about losing memory. It can
affect people in many ways: concentration,
the ability to plan and do tasks in the right
order; language, such as being able to follow a
conversation or find the right words; vision,
such as problems in judging distances and
seeing things differently; and confusion over
time of the day and where they might be. It
All groups meet in the Community Centre in
process for the site.
White Horse Pub site
The Parish Council has been notified that
the current owners of the White Horse
pub in Keyhaven Road are aiming to sell
the site. The pub is registered as an Asset
of Community Value and as such, if any
Community Interest Group would like to
make a bid for this asset they have until
17th December to do so. Anyone
interested in being involved should
contact the parish Office as soon as
possible.
Memorial Benches available
The Parish Council has identified a number
of pre-sponsored Memorial Benches at
various locations around the village which
are now available to new sponsors. Prices
include a 20 year insurance and
maintenance contract which would
involve a full refurbishment of the bench,
along with a new plaque to sit alongside
the original plaque. In addition, there are
a number of new benches available at the
children’s seafront playpark for
sponsorship. For more details contact the
parish office.
Village Directory updated
The Parish Council would like to thank
Jenny Whitley and Ruth Bufton for their
efforts in collating the new village
Directory . The Directory is fully revised
and updated with a new user-friendly
format which lists clubs, societies, help
groups and other useful village
information. You can download a copy
Bag it and Bin it! Dog bags available from
Parish Office to help tackle Milford’s Mess
We are sad to report that dog fouling
continues to be blight our lovely village.
The Parish Council has recently purchased
additional signage to go in the Pleasure
Grounds
and other
points
around the
village. This
anti-social
behaviour
causes disease and is generally horrid. We
know that the majority of dog owners are
responsible and as usual it is the few who
spoil it for everybody. Dog bags are
available to purchase from the Parish
Office at the very reasonable rate of £1 per
roll of 50.
Once used, the bags can now be placed
in ANY PUBLIC BIN in the village (not just
the red dog waste bins). Bag it and bin it
and keep Milford-on-Sea special!
issues to the County Council – just visit
their website: www.hants.gov.uk and click
on the “Report a road problem”. You can
then select from a variety of issues
including potholes, flooding or fallen trees.
Enter in a few quick details and the County
Council will investigate and act accordingly.
Grants available for groups
The Parish Council has a small community
support budget to provide small one-off
grants to help support community
organisations. The priority is to assist
groups who have only a limited fundraising
capacity of maybe starting a new
community
activity. There is
still some
funding available
for this financial
year but
requests have to
be made by
March 2019. If
you would like to
apply, please contact the Parish Office.
The Parish Council would like to
wish all residents a very Merry
Christmas and a Happy, Healthy
and Prosperous New Year.
How to report a pothole or fallen tree
It’s the time of year
when potholes seem to
appear overnight and
trees can be blown
down in the windy
winter weather. There
is a quick and easy way
of reporting these
Steven Lord
In 2017 there were 95,000 applications for a
Grant of Representation by individuals; that is
for Probate where there is a Will, or Letters of
Administration on intestacy or other reasons.
This compares with 155,000 applications
through a Solicitor or alternative business
structures. The person taking the Grant is
called “The Personal Representative “ (PR).
The process of applying for a Grant of
Representation can be relatively
straightforward if the assets and liabilities of the
deceased’s Estate are simple, with much
guidance being available from the local Probate
Registry and HM Revenue and Customs. Still,
most PRs prefer to use a Solicitor for a variety of
reasons:
• There are international assets, business
interests, or trusts involved, or
• There is family conflict, second marriages,
overseas beneficiaries, or
• There are complex Inheritance Tax or Capital
Gains Tax considerations, or
• The process is simply too time consuming, or
• T he Executors are aware that there might be
problems with their lack of experience or
knowledge.
The role of PR is generally a thankless task,
taking considerable time and effort for no
personal reward. A lay PR can claim out of
pocket expenses, but not for time. If the Estate
is insolvent or not correctly distributed, the PR
can find themselves personally liable for debts
or charges of maladministration, as well as
criticism from beneficiaries whose first question
DIY PROBATE PITFALLS
is generally ‘how much will I inherit’ followed
quickly by ‘when will I receive my inheritance’.
The beneficiaries will expect to be kept up to
date with progress in the administration of an
estate and for all matters to be dealt with
punctually. A PR needs to be confident in
interpretation of the law, taxes and to be able
to keep accounts properly. Increasingly we find
that we are being consulted by beneficiaries
who are frustrated by a lack of progress and
communication by lay PRs who seem to be in no
rush to complete their duties, or have been
overwhelmed by the complexities
involved. Such delays can be expensive for the
beneficiaries, especially where a property is left
vacant and there are ongoing charges for
utilities, insurance and maintenance.
The cost of instructing a Solicitor to assist the PR
with help in the administration of an Estate is
normally borne by the Estate, not by the PR
personally, so taking early advice on particular
issues or general guidance can be beneficial to
both the PR and the Beneficiary.
Heppenstalls Solicitors can offer guidance to
PRs, apply for the Grant of Representation on
their behalf, or can offer a full Estate
administration service and are happy to offer a
competitive quotation or a fixed price service,
depending upon the assistance required. If you
In the Garden
with Alan Edmondson of
Bowercot Garden Design
December/January
Gardening Tips
• On fine days, complete the winter pruning of fruit and ornamental trees and bushes.
• Roses can still be planted so long as the soil is not too wet or frosty.
• Check stakes and ties on newly planted trees; wind rock can cause a lot of damage.
• Continue to plant deciduous hedges if the soil is workable.
• You can still plant lily bulbs if you see some on offer, but check that they are in good
condition before you buy.
• Do not over water in the greenhouse and do not water late in the day.
• Pot up plants of primroses, polyanthus and border auriculas and bring into the cold
greenhouse for early flowering.
• If you have not sown any broad beans then do so now.
• Check stored fruit and remove any that has rotted.
• Work in organic manure, where required, in the vegetable plot. Do not lime at the
same time.
• Remove algae and moss growth from stonework and paving on a dry day.
• Do not plant conifers and evergreen shrubs in cold frosty weather.
• Clean paeony crowns of dead stems and foliage and cover with an inch of peat or
sawdust. This helps to prevent infection of the blooms.
• Send for some seed catalogues and order something different.
LOOKING BACK/PLANNING AHEAD
Thank you to
everyone who
helped make this
years Newcomers Supper a success. With lots
of ‘stalls’ in the church of clubs and
associations, the Newcomers had plenty to
see and a Goodie Bag of even more
information to take home. We had about 120
people coming for supper , which was
amazingly provided by the 4 church
congregations. A big joint effort with help
from many people to supply food, help
organise the dining room, serve the food and
then do all the washing up and clearing away,
whilst the Newcomers got to make friends
and learn about Milford. We were then
entertained by the ‘Straight Banana’ group
who were much appreciated and then we
sang the village song!! The appreciation of
this event by the participants makes it very
worth while organising. However, I would
really love to have someone to share the
organising in future (I am not getting any
younger!!) . It is not arduous to organise
beforehand, and with more help on the day
could be less exhausting - so come on folks –it
is only once a year!! Please get in touch Ruth
frog to the exhibition, please see Dominic who
following day!!
What Are You Hoping For This Christmas?
We’re all hoping for something. Depending on your age, it might be an Xbox, a
phone, something for the house or garden, time with family and friends over
some great food, or just a chance to put your feet up. Then there’s the job of
figuring out what those family and friends are all hoping for, and trying to buy
them something they’ll like. And the food is meant to be special isn’t it – more
planning and shopping.
Most of us hope we’ll have a happy day with loved ones, but that can be more difficult to plan
for. Conversations can take an unexpected turn, in good ways or bad. The rows can erupt over
almost anything at Christmas. Everything seems more heightened. Sometimes it’s a challenge to
get through a couple of days with family we just don’t see eye to eye with. Expectations
sometimes turn to disappointment. Some people find their own family the loneliest place to be.
For some, Christmas is a sad time, reminding us of happier memories, of those we have lost, or
fallen out with. We may be wondering who we will see this Christmas, if anyone.
At Compass we help people think about and work on their relationships – why they work, why
they don’t. We can’t change our family, but we can think about our role in it, and how the family
relate to each other. We can learn to listen, instead of reacting. We can get better at
understanding instead of judging. Compass is a good place to think about all of this with a
trained counsellor, and get a new perspective. We don’t take sides, and everything you say is
confidential.
UPDATES FROM THE COUNTY….. Towards the end of a fruitful year!
In August, I wrote about my hopes for setting
up a Men’s Shed in the area. Just under 70
gentlemen from Milford, Hordle, Tiptoe and
New Milton turned up for our public meeting in
September and a smaller group are now
forming a Shed Committee. Another group are
meeting each week socially for a ‘Friday Natter’
at a local pub. Potential Shed sites are being
systematically assessed, but we still need that
one great idea to come to fruition, so if you can
help, get in touch. I’m confident we will shortly
get our local Men’s Shed and I’d like to thank
the Shedders for being so enthusiastic about
the project. If you’d like to get involved, it’s not
too late, just email or phone me, contact details
below.
Another plea. Hampshire County Council are
continually looking for families to adopt or
foster children.
highlight this issue here. If you have ever
considered fostering or adopting, Hampshire’s
Children’s Services teams would love to hear
from you. Find out more on 0300 555 1384 or
at https://www.hants.gov.uk/
socialcareandhealth/adoptionandfostering
I have really enjoyed the opportunities to study
the birds and wildlife of the area with the
Milford Conservation Volunteers this year. In
summer, I found myself on a ‘moth watch’ in
the meadow off Pless Road, which was a
fascinating evening, sat around a large bulb in
the dark. Not so fascinating were the insect
bites I discovered I’d gained, through my
clothes, the next morning. But a small price to
pay for a great learning experience on a balmy
evening with good company. In October, I
joined Keith Metcalf on a boat trip to observe
the winter-returning birds on the saltmarshes.
This was wonderful - other than me making my
way, as the flyer had said, to Hurst Castle
Pontoon, along the spit, early on a foggy and
drizzly morning - to find the pontoon in
question was at Keyhaven! I was never so
pleased to see a boat as when Keith and crew
turned up to collect me from Hurst. Thank you,
Keith - I continue to live and learn!
This is the last issue of Village Voice before
2019, so I shall take this early opportunity to
wish you a very merry Christmas and a healthy,
happy and prosperous New Year. Let’s hope it
will be a good one. It should certainly be an
interesting year politically, with Brexit in
March!
Kind regards, Fran
Hampshire has hundreds of children desperate
for loving homes, either on a temporary or
permanent basis. As a member of the Children
& Young People’s Committee, I’d like to
Hampshire County Councillor for
Milford, Everton & Keyhaven.
